Subject: [*] Bat Phone Book (FM Pro 3 DB)
The bat phone book for FileMaker Pro version 3.0. It is a database for
storing names, phone numbers, addresses, email and more. Makes use of a
nice graphical interface which is very user friendly and includes pictures
of "Batman" and other celebrities from the film series. Uses pop-up menus,
scrolling menus, and has a special directory to print out a list of names
and numbers. Even better, it takes up only 200k.

Subject: [*] Car Repair Catalogue (FM Pro 3 DB)
The car repair catalogue for FileMaker Pro 3.0. It was designed to keep
track of the repairs done to a car. It auto-dates the entries, and allows
you to input the repairs, parts, cost, hours spent, mileage etc. It will
also keep a running tab on how much you've invested in repairs, and total
hours "wasted" on them. It also makes use of some nice graphics.

The July ZineNote (tm)
Inside the July infoZine, Kansas City's Digital Monthly Magazine:
With the music of Kansas City Boulevard Big Band, "Stellar"
As we improvise on this stage and careen with the serendipty of life, we
are all playing in the big jazz band of our communities. If not, what are
you doing?
This issue more than any other came together because of the communities we
live in. Living and working in the little community of Troostwood which is
a part of the 49/63 Neighborhood Coalition in Kansas City, gave me the
oppurtunity to help celebrate it's 25th Anniversary. The saying is, "AS
49/63 GOES, SO GOES KANSAS CITY."
Our Cyber community allows us to take a walk around an Eastside LA
neighborhood. And if we keep walking across the Pacific ocean to Taiwan
we'll see what it's like learning a foreign language, English, using
infoZine and chatting on One Crossroads Place, a Kansas City BBS.
We continue around the World with a vist to Argentina to open doors and
build bridges of friendship for future teacher exchanges between our two
countries.
And back home again to Kansas City you'll notice the GLOBEART being created
here in Kansas City using recycled materials, as we look back to the
cutting of the great pine forests in the Ozarks.
We come full circle in the continuous search for understanding of who we
are and what we must do to live together. We may raises more questions than
we answer. Perhaps the "Surf D'lurk Award" winner will better help us
understand the diversity of our lives.
Of course all the regular features are here, and not a cartoon missing!
Please pass this issue on to a friend or an aquaintance. Its energy is in
the sum of its parts.
Peace

For a long time, Windows(tm) users have enjoyed the ease of being able to
switch between running applications with the alt-tab keystroke. Many Mac
users, while not envious of the other operating system, wished the
MacOS(tm) would have a similar feature. Program Switcher is meant to not
only add that feature to your Macintosh, but also improve on it so that the
other operating system's users will wish their alt-tab feature was as good
as the Mac's.
Features include:
- Three different switching themes: two based on the new Windows95(tm)
alt-tab theme, and the original Windows alt-tab theme
- The ability to quit any number of applications at one time - The ability
to hide background applications when a switch is perform - User
configurable keys and appearance

THE BLOCK is a simple protection-utility for your MAC. It invites the
unwanted visitor to enter a password at startup. But you need a trick to go
on...
THE BLOCK will not add any preference file to your overloaded system-folder
or change parts of the system. There is also nothing patched although it is
a system-extension. Everything will left unchanged, so this might be highly
compatible with all colour-MACs and all kind of software.
To install, simply drag THE BLOCK to your System folder and restart your
computer.
THE BLOCK has been tested on a Performa 475, a Performa 6200 and a PowerMac
7500. Please E-MAIL me your bug-reports if you find any bugs that occur
with other computers.
THE BLOCK is Freeware. Anyway, if you want to do me a favour, send me your
self-written software (with registration-code if necessary), or send money
or books or something you think I will be happy with. But : please don't
send me software unless you're the author.
After registration you can call yourself a "Registered-Block-User", but
this is all that will change in your life. I do not know if I will release
any updates, but if you want to get any new update, just tell me.
THE BLOCK is Copyright c 1996 by Marc Mennigmann. This software was created

Subject: ! 5xxx/6xxx OWNERS MUST READ THIS! MAC DAMAGED !!
Boy, I feel like I may be one of a million who will post about this, as
the information is widely available. In fact, it's right on the front
page of Apple's own Web site. But I won't make you feel dumb.
There are some design problems with the 5200 and 6200 series Macs, which
Apple has known about for a long time. The problems can result in monitor
flickering, system freezes and other strange behavior. The only fix is to
replace the defective parts. Now the good news.
YOU CAN HAVE IT FIXED FOR FREE. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO CHARGE YOU MONEY
FOR THIS REPAIR.
Apple has responded to the problem with what they call the Repair
Extension Program ("it's not a recall"). This means that you can get
these things repaired for free at your authorized Apple repair place,
under warranty, no matter when you bought it, parts and labor all
absolutely 100% free of charge. If there's no authorized repair place
near you, Apple has contracted with a company that will come out to you
and fix it for you in your home or office, again, for no charge. I myself
have just this very day received the fix. For me, it was a new ROM DIMM,
new video cable harness, new RAM and ground clips, in other words
literally hundreds of dollars worth of parts for nothing.
Now, there might be a slight delay in getting those parts, as the demand
is huge. The parts are coming in more and more every day now.
For more details, go visit the Apple web site or call 1-800-SOS-APPL if
you can't get on the web. Also, part of this program includes the
Powerbook 5300 (series?), but I don't have one, so I don't know the
details.

Subject: [Q] Applescript Help
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a book on learning Applescript.
Or, if someone can help me out - it's just one thing I'm trying to do.
Background:
I have a Novell Netware 3.11/Netware For Mac 3.12 network. When students
are finished using the Macs, they restart the computers. Before System
7.5.x, this would automatically log the student out. Now, their accounts
stay "logged on" for two minutes, or until another student comes in. Since
we have guest accounts based on the machine's name, if a guest logs off,
and then another guest tries to logon, he has to wait, or logon as another
guest (just complicating things).
What works is dragging the network volumes into the trash. Restarting is
nice because it leaves the network logon screen after restart.
I'd like to have an applescript applet which I can put in the "Shutdown
Items" folder, which will run when students restart the computer. What I
need, though, is a dialog box to come up to ask "Restart or Shutdown." The
simple attempts that I have made are good just for restarting the
computers. Shutting down requires taking the applet out of the Shutdown
Items folder (I want to make it as easy for everyone - students and staff).
Can anyone recommend a good Applescript book, or the code that I'm looking
for? If you e-mail me directly, I'll summarize for the list.
Thanks!

Subject: More Then 2 Serial Ports (my A)
I have two computers and four periferals. I use two "switchbox
layers" to switch between computers and periferals. I don't use any
switchbox cable from computers to AB box and AB box to ABCD box. The
double mirror reverse of cheap printer cables cancels out.
Both switchboxes are "Bravo" antisurge switches. I spent three times
the price of ordinary switchboxes because I knew the internal female
connections were pcb right angle mounts and not crimp ons that push out
of the plug.
I think they are right about anti-surge too and that was an added
bonus. With the cheap switchboxes my modem would go into wierd states and
recognize characters wrong after switching.
Bravo told me that I was a bad boy switching between computers, but I
have found no trouble yet doing this with their boxes.
Hope this helps!

Subject: Newbie questions (hypertext and outliner authoring tools)
Newton press has some outlining capabilities in making indices. One
generation of daughters (one indent headlines).
Newton mp130 and I suppose all system 2.0 newtons have outline with
multiple indent capability.
Dyno notepad on my mac is a converted acta allowing multiple open
files and export of text files. I use it to make palette's of tex commands
and further construct tex documents seeing the outline structure.
Easy view at some sort of setting helped organize newton script
programs for me, but it merely showed a table of contents one daughter
deep.
I am sorry that I did not try many other outliner programs and
hypertext authoring tools. You tend to get comfortable with one
implementation of the metaphor and specialize.

if it says your disk cache needs replacing, you need to make an appointment
with your local Apple dealer ASAP!! That's exactly what was wrong with
mine. The disk cache is a ROM chip that has to be replaced. But my
motherboard was OK.
If you haven't started having problems yet with your computer, you will
soon: it freezes at various times, most likely in the Finder. Even though
I've had the repair done, my computer STILL freezes occasionally, but not
as much as before the chip was replaced. I'm convinced there is something
physically wrong with a lot of the models, even some regular Power Macs,
and the repair that they make only fixes a part of what's wrong, not the
whole thing. But, that's all Apple will be responsible for right now.
Get your Performa fixed! Soon!

REPLYING TO:
! 5xxx/6xxx OWNERS MUST READ THIS! YOUR MAC CAN BE DAMAGED !
-If you have a Macintosh 5xxx or 6xxx (in most cases, macintosh performa
with a PowerPC 603 chip, but also some other configurations) please read
this message, it should interest you ... and your answer (?)
would be very a
ppreciated.
-Well, I have a Performa 6200 24/500/CD (PowerPC 603/75) and I haven't
any problem with it. But I when I ran the new "5xxx-6xxx_Tester_1.0" from
Apple Computer, this utility told me that my cache memory was dammaged.
In fact, this sofware checks the motherboard AND the cache separately. It
can detect a problem either on your motherboard or on the cache. In fact, I
don't know if the problem comes from the cache level 1 or 2. Level 2 can be
replaced easily by the dealer, but level 1 implicates that all the motherboard
must be replaced! And that's a pity on a mac which runs very well! So, it would
be very nice if someone could tell me what type of cache memory comes the
problem from.
-If you want to get the 5xxx-6xxx_Tester and test your own mac or want more
information about it (I've got a read-me file from Apple), please send me an
E-Mail to [email protected] and I'll send it to you immedialty. Even if your
mac runs well it can have the problem. Only for macintosh series 5xxx and 6xxx
having a PowerPC chip.
-If someone has already experienced the same problem with the cache, could
you tell me what YOU did, what did (eventually) the dealer and what was
exactly the problem? Do I have to replace my cache even if my mac is running
well?
Thank you very much in advance and don't hesitate to send me a mail to get
the tester or to give me more information!

Many thanks for your help which is very usefull. Just one question: what about
Netscape 3.0b6? Is it less buggy? On my Pmac7500 32/1000 7.5.3rev2, it seems to
be quickier, more responsive and less type11 errors appear...

To install, simply drag THE BLOCK to your System folder and restart your

THE BLOCK has been tested on a Performa 475, a Performa 6200 and a PowerMac

Thanks!

There is a 4 port switcher available from silicon valley bus company.
For details try www.svbus.com
The switch is reliable and is controlled and powered through the ADB port.
I have used it on a live theatre show for several months.

Any other recommendations or suggestions?

Subject: RAM Doubler 1.6
To Info-Mac,
I need help trying to find RAM Doubler 1.6. I recently found an
extension called MaxRAM, which, in conjunction with RAM Doubler 1.6, and
version 1.6 only, would increase your physical RAM by 6 x.
I found that MaxRAM does not work with the updates of RAM Doubler.
If anyone can help me find the orginal RAM Doubler 1.6, and not the
upgrades, PLEASE let me know. My Macintosh LC II is memory exhausted.
Thankyou,
Choua

Subject: Repair Extension Program
The tester you mentioned in info-mac has to do with the Repair Extension
Program which is affecting a lot of Performas, like mine (6300 CD). Yes,
if it says your disk cache needs replacing, you need to make an appointment
with your local Apple dealer ASAP!!

-If you have a Macintosh 5xxx or 6xxx (in most cases, macintosh performa
with a PowerPC 603 chip, but also some other configurations) please read
this message, it should interest you ... and your answer (?)
