These are some goodies I have made to make the desktop of my B&W/4 color
Powerbook look much nicer. It's really frustrating that despite the 4
color/gray capability, Apple seems to think that we really must have B&W
everywhere on the desktop unless we have 16 colors/grays. But there are
little ways around this by crawling around things with ResEdit. However, I
have spared you that trouble with Aaron. I have also supplied some icons
and a gosh darn really good hard drive icon. Feel free to upload anywhere
and put on any CD Rom as long as it stays in tact with this Readme.

Subject: [*] Aztec Calendar V2.2
The Aztec Calendar V2.2
This program allows you to convert a Julian or Greogorian date (the date
system we use) into a date as used by the Aztecs of Mexico. It displays the
Aztec date glyphs and also gives some rather poetic information on the
significance of the specified day.
It should replace the Hypercard version (1.3) of this program in the
archives (app/aztec-calendar-13-hc.hqx). Version 2.2 is a standalone
program.
This program was written by Rene Voorburg ([email protected] /
[email protected]) and William Horden ([email protected]). You can
find more information on the Aztec Calendar on
http://napa.diva.nl/~voorburg/aztec.html. A Windows version can be found
there too.

Subject: [*] Better Edit Keys 1.0
Price: $10 (shareware)
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini
Better Edit Keys is a cool system enhancement that allows you to use the shift,
option and control keys with the arrows, delete, forward delete and clear
keys in
any standard text editing field, including basic text editors such as
SimpleText.
This makes it much easier to work with text without reaching the mouse. The
following key combinations are allowed:
- shift + any arrow: extend the current selection.
- option + left/right arrow: move to the previous or next word.
- control + left/right arrow or option + up/down arrow: move to the beginning
or
end of the current line.
- shift + option + any arrow: move like option + arrow while extending the
selection.
- option + delete: delete up to the beginning of the current word (or clear
selection).
- forward delete or shift + delete: delete the next character (or clear
selection).
- option + forward delete or shift + option + delete: delete up to the end
of the
current word (or clear selection).
- clear: clear the current selection, if any.
- option + clear: delete the current word (or clear selection).
The above tasks should usually be performed by applications, but many of them
don't care. Better Edit Keys implements this default behavior in all situations
where the application is not already taking care of it, but it does nothing if
the application handles the keystrokes by itself. This means that the above
keystrokes will not work if the application already handles them. For example
recent versions of SimpleText handle the forward delete key by themselves,
which
also disables the option + forward delete keystroke provided by Better Edit
Keys.
There is no safe way to override the application's own handling of the
keystrokes, so Better Edit Keys is only useful for applications that don't
handle
them and for generic text editing fields like the ones in dialog windows.

Subject: [*] ClickPad II 2.1
This is ClickPad II version 2.1, Copyright (c) 1996 Dan Wright.
ClickPad II is shareware (US$14) - see enclosed "Read Me" for details.
ClickPad II requires a PowerBook with a TrackPad; specifically, the
PowerBook 520, 540, and 5300 families are supported. You can now just tap
the TrackPad to click the mouse button, double-tap to double-click, or
tap-drag to lock the button down for dragging.
Features New or Improved in ClickPad II:
* ClickPad II is more responsive during heavy trackpad usage and
"dozes" when you stop using the trackpad to reduce CPU & power usage (and
so allowing your PowerBook to sleep).
* You can now "lock" the trackpad button down, allowing drags and menu
selections without using the (physical) trackpad button. Way cool.
* ClickPad II provides optional audio feedback.
New in version 2.1: Improved performance, shorter clicks, more configuration
options, bug fixes, and the ability to lock the button down by clicking the
(physical) TrackPad button, or by holding your finger down in place.

HyperSlider 1.8.1 (FAT) (Copyright 1996 by Wolfgang Thaller)
-- creating interactive slide shows
-- many transitions effects
-- simple multimedia authoring (combine graphics, sounds, movies..)
(Version 1.8.1 is a bug-fix upgrade to 1.8. It is a fat binary that runs native
on both Power Macs and 68k Macs.)
HyperSlider is a shareware-program ($10) written by Wolfgang Thaller. It is a
tool for creating and viewing interactive (and serial) slide shows and
presentations with hyperlinks between the slides. Just command-drag a rectangle
on a slide to create a hyperlink!
In addition you can
- add movies to your shows
- place text and graphics on your slides
- link sounds to the transitions
- create stand-alone players (registered users only)
- choose among many transition effects
- and much more
HyperSlider tries to preload slides into memory for better performance.
Note: The slides cannot be created or changed with HyperSlider, they have to be
prepared in PICT-format by another program (it is also possible to view slides
directly from a Photo CD).
The file hyperslider-18.hqx is a BinHexed self-extracting archive. It contains
the application, a user-manual and an Apple Guide file for on-line help.
If you want to view the demo show described in the manual you should get
the demo
slide collection "hyperslider-18-demo-show.hqx", which is posted separately.

Hi,
I am the Webmaster for Aditi Corporation.
I am looking to bounce an idea off you and would be super grateful if you could
find the time to give me some feedback.
I am facing some problems trying to manage mail that comes in on the webmaster@
alias such as..
Too many mails come in and it is difficult to keep track of the status of each
mail - especially if I have forwarded it to someone else. It is difficult for
multiple resources to collectively take care of this alias. I cannot prioritize
my mail based on the importance of a customer. I cannot create a customer
database based on who has sent me mail - and it is difficult to send collective
mails out to the customers.
I am trying to talk to my development team to build a product that takes care
of
this. ( They are a smart bunch and have some cool Internet mail product
already).
What do you think ? Any interest ?
If you're already super excited, I've posted a form on my site which will
collect
some structured feedback. I am attaching a link below that should take you
there.
It shouldn't take more than 3-4 minutes. If you don't get there, but are still
interested, drop me a single line email.
Thanks much.

Subject: [*] Johns WP Note Editor 3.0
This set of macros for WordPerfect Mac 3.x displays all endnotes or
footnotes in one window, nearly automates cross-referencing of notes, and
facilitates formatting and printing.
Notes can be entered and edited in the single Note Editor window and, in
one step, placed in your paper when you've finished writing.
Or you can enter notes in the standard way and then, with one command, copy
all of them to the Note Editor for editing or rearrangement. Then, it's one
step to copy all endnotes or footnotes back to your paper, updating the
earlier notes.
Marking a note for reference elsewhere, and creating that reference, take
one step apiece.
You can print endnotes directly from the Note Editor for better formatting
options, including spacing and alignment. Or, print footnotes separately
for a publisher who wants footnotes as well as endnotes on separate pages
>From body text.
New in this version: marking and referencing of notes, support for multiple
open papers and editors, substantially smarter and faster overall.
This version should replace util/text/johnswpnoteeditor.sit on UMich, and
both text/wp/johns-note-editor-wp.hqx, and text/johns-wp-note-editor-20.hqx
on Sumex.
Free for non-commercial distribution and use. May be included on UMich and

Subject: [*] MenuBall 2.3.1J (Japanese version)
MenuBall 2.3.1J is the Japanese version of Alessandro Levi Montalcini's
MenuBall 2.3.1.
It always reminds me of the good old previous days. Yes, it is a good
memory recaller for me.
* MenuBall is an absolutely useless control panel that puts a bouncing
ball in your menu bar. It won't slow down your Mac and it shouldn't crash
(but use it at your own risk).
* There's only one smart use for MenuBall: since the ball moves one step
at each WaitNextEvent call, you can use it to monitor the system activity.
If it moves slowly, the front application is being friendly to other
processes and giving up a lot of processor time.
* MenuBall has a complete online documentation you can access with the
button in the control panel. You may save it as a text file and read or
print it with a text editor.
New in version 2.3.1:
- Updated documentation and recompiled with CodeWarrior 9.
Thanks to Alessandro, for permission to localize his excellent programs.
This is freeware. Have fun!

Subject: [*] Microsoft Installer Patch
If you've ever installed Microsoft Office 4.2.x, you know that Microsoft's
Setup application creates a folder named "Microsoft" in the root level of
your hard drive. Well, not only does this piss me off a little as a Mac
user -- even more because things BREAK when you move it -- but it created
an impossible situation at work which prevented us from putting Office on
300+ lab machines. (yes, I thought this was a good thing too
... but my
boss didn't.)
I fought with this problem for a while... and eventually, the Microsoft
Installer patch was born. It's a moderately skanky hack which you only need
to run the first time you're installing Office. It fools Setup into
thinking it's creating the folder in the root directory, when actually it's
being hidden away in the system folder. You only need to run it once, while
you're installing Office.
After the installation, you have a happy RegDB, which means that
Microsoft's bloated, fat, slow applications can find their files, and the
world is wonderful again. (That is, until you do something that Microsoft
doesn't approve of, like rename your hard drive. (*gasp!*) )
~MIP is public domain, and full source is included.

- Fixed a bug that could crash NET/Mac after a 'ping clear'
- You cannot return to the window of a closed session anymore
- Trace to a file now result in a TEXT-file
- The hosts-file is no longer busy after using the 'hostfile' command
- Implemented some mods to trace an infinite loop in 'route expanded'
- Implemented just a minor mod for the Mac512Ke version of NET/Mac
- NET/Mac does NOT support the new Buckmaster CD-ROM's HAMCALL database yet...
I
am trying to convince Buckmaster that I need the new data-encryption-method,
but
as of yet they are not ready to release a description of the
encoding-algorithm... The old CD-ROM's remain fully supported...
This version obsoletes all versions of info-mac/comm/radio-net-mac in the
Sumex-Aim.stanford.edu (and it's mirror-) archives.
The new NET/Mac has (hopefully) been uploaded to:
- oak.oakland.edu, to the directory /pub/hamradio/mac/digital
- ftp.ucsd.edu, to directory /hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming. If it's not there
(anymore), then look at /hamradio/packet/tcpip/mac.
- hamster.business.uwo.ca, to directory /pub/amsoft
- wa2zkd mirrors UCSD's incoming on his Landline BBS. Ham's w/o ftp can call
716-544-1863 or 2645.
NET/Mac will be uploaded to PI1HVH.AMPR.ORG, directory public/mac.

Pixel Spy is a simple utility which allows you to determine the magnitude
of the various color components which make up a color on the screen.
Specifically, you can select a pixel from the screen, and Pixel Spy will
tell you the RGB, HSV, CMY, index and hex (web) code values for the color
of that pixel. You may also modify these displayed codes to manually change
the current color or choose a color from the standard Mac color picker.
This new has the following changes:
Added access to the standard Mac color-picker
Fixed a number-rounding bug
Fixed a problem displaying CMY values when using the Large range
Added an auto-saving preferences file
Added CMY
Got rid of annoying text flickering
Added the ability to switch the capture key

Subject: [*] PrinterSwitch 1.1 Beta 2
PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to easily
select among many different printers when you print documents in your
applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.
PrinterSwitch appears right when you need it; when you select Print or Page
Setup from any program. No need to memorize hot key sequences! It can also
be activated by a convenient Control Strip Module.
It knows about LaserWriter 7 and 8 PPD files and makes sure to use the
proper PPD for each printer, eliminating a common source of Postscript
printing errors.
The printer status display will show you if a printer is busy or out of
paper... BEFORE you print!
This is BETA software. It will expire on August 7, 1996. The latest
"release" version is 1.0.4.
Changes in PrinterSwitch 1.1 beta 2:
* Now you can select printers using the up/down arrow keys
* Auto-detection of LaserWriter 7 PPD files
* Better handling of low-memory situations

Subject: [*] SMAP: an SNMP-based network traffic visualizer
SMAP is a simple SNMP-based network traffic visualization tool for MacOS.
SMAP will help you create an active map of a portion of your logical
internetwork, and once you've got a map, SMAP will animate it for you.
Depending on the SNMP agents you already have running on your internetwork,
SMAP may be able to show you your TCP/IP, AppleTalk, and IPX topologies, as
well as your internetwork traffic, your overall network traffic levels, and
your low-level node-to-node traffic.
A network admin can use SMAP to run a network-at-a-glance display, and to
log traffic & error levels.
SMAP will run on just about any MacOS machine that's got MacTCP or a
current version of Open Transport. SMAP will talk to just about any device
that's SNMPv1-over-IP manageable. You don't need to know SNMP to run SMAP,
so long as you know a read community for each device you want to map.
What's new with SMAP 1.1:
* you can use RMON agents to display a network conversation traffic matrix
* you can use RMON agents or Repeater MIB-savvy agents to supply overall
network traffic stats
* SMAP now has a cute but limited junior MIB browser
* you can now see your IPX network topology (if your routers' SNMP agents are
smart enough)
* you can track connectivity problems with ICMP pings to supplement your
SNMP polling
* you can log things to disk as well as to logwindows
* you can ask for SNMP traps and syslog messages to be logged
* if your Mac is on the internet, you can automatically be notified via
the SIVC protocol when new versions of SMAP get released
* native Open Transport support; a general workover of the user interface
What's fixed with SMAP 1.1:
* SMAP occasionally hung when resolving DNS names; this was fixed
* plus a few display-garbling bugs got fixed
SMAP is $20 shareware.

Subject: [*] The InformInit v1.1.1
Announcing the release of The InformInit v1.1.1, The indispensible guide to
what's dispensible on your Mac and the most comprehensive guide to
extensions, control panels and system-related info ANYWHERE! The
InformInit's companion web site was mentioned in the June, '96 issue of
MacWorld under the title "When Software Dreams Come True."
The InformInit is a shareware application within which you can find almost
every init Apple has ever produced, with information on what they do, who
needs them, version numbers, RAM consumption, tips and tricks, and URLs for
further information on confusing items. There is an ever-growing section on
non-Apple inits. A chapter on System Folder contents gives information on
some of the common items found loose in the System Folder. There is a
summary of Apple information on System 7.5.3, such as which computers need
which of the various updates (7.5 update 2.0, Revision 2), how to best
install the updates, and what changes have been made in each update.
Finally, there is extensive information about PRAM, how to reset it on
various Macs, and what actually gets "reset." Use this guide to satisfy
your curiosity about unidentified files, to help you cut down on all the
spurious extensions that you don't really need, and to generally improve
the performance of your Mac.
NOTE: This version (1.1.1) has merely one change, but one which was
important enough to correct immediately (the change was to "System 7.5
Update" in the "System Folder" chapter.

Subject: [*] Word Fixer
Part of my job is (was) maintaining Mac software for several hundred
computers in public labs at the University of Michigan. Well, Microsoft
Word has a horrible bug in which the spell checker will just STOP WORKING
if the directory ID of the Microsoft folder ever changes. But... if you
want to run Office on 300 lab machines without installing each separately,
the directory ID will **NEVER** be the same as it was the first time you
installed it. And when the dirID changes, things break, and you can never
use the spell checker (or any of the other tools) ever again. For the
average user, this makes Word about as useful as SimpleText, except that it
occupies _30 megs_ of disk space rather than 66k.
Anyway, that's where Word Fixer comes in. It's a quick hack that munges
your Word Settings file so the spell checker and most of the other tools
work again. The code is really ugly since it's not mine
and because it
was written on very short notice, but it's solid.
Credit goes to Ed Wynne who actually wrote this thing, I just cleaned it up
a bit and released it.
Word Fixer is public domain, and full source is included.

Zippier Zip is a free patcher that allows you to modify the original Iomega

- The patched Iomega Driver no longer complains when you start up with your Zip

The driver is still not loaded, but you won't get the annoying error message at
the end of the startup process.

time you load the driver after startup.

According to Steve Dorner "that's a feature" of Eudora Pro v3.0. To receive

that "Receive MIME digests as attachments." is unchecked. This will fix the

Subject: FaxSTF and USR V.Everything
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have a US Robotics Courier V.Everything 33.6 kbps modem. I'm having
difficulty sending faxes with FaxSTF v3.2.2, the latest official release.
Here is an outline of the circumstances:
1. FaxSTF DIMS OUT the 12,000 and 14,400 send speeds. I contacted tech
support about this and they stated it was because they could not get the
modem to receive reliably at these speeds. I don't entirely beleive
this, mainly because this 33.6 modem has worked flawlessly for over a
year, and I have been able to fax with it at 14,400 repeatedly.
2. Every time I try sending (even at as low as 2400 baud) I receive an
error -6003 (Unable to confirm last page sent). This happens almost every
single time, and it prevents me from sending more than a single-page fax
because it kills the modem connection when this error occurs.
Other than that everything seems to work fine (i.e. no system errors and
such). I'm sure it's not a system conflict, and I'm sure everything's
set up correctly. FaxSTF tech support has been less than willing to find
me a solution and I have yet to receive a response from the once-reliable
US Robotics manufacturer. If anyone has any information I'd be extremely
appreciative-- I've been without working fax capabilities for weeks.

If you want to view the demo show described in the manual you should get
the demo

Hi,
I am the Webmaster for Aditi Corporation.

(yes, I thought this was a good thing too
boss didn't.)

Subject: [*] NET/Mac v2.3.60
NET/Mac v2.3.60 was born...
For those who don't know NET/Mac... NET/Mac is the application that supports
TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators can use NET/Mac
for their wireless TCP/IP network...
In this version of NET/Mac the following mods/features were implemented:
- Recording a finger-session now results in a TEXT-file
- Support for 'rtzone' comand

This is a very simple application, that is really meant for programmers.
The application is built with a C++ class, that makes getting the standard

myself. So here it is.

System requirements:
* Any Mac

Subject: [*] Total Shutdown 1.0
What this file does when you run it is, first it closes all the windows,
then it cleans up the desktop, then it empties the trash, displays a
message, then shuts down the computer. This requires system 7 or later
(Sorry system 6 users!). This is shareware, but all I am asking is $3.00.
If you can't afford $3.00 (???), send me whatever you can. Read the "read

Subject: [*] Window Set Manager 1.0
Window Set Manager can help keep you organized and productive! WSM saves
"sets" of Finder windows - remembering their size and position, so you can
restore them in an instant.
Keep different sets for different tasks, and switch between them with a
single menu selection! Eliminates clutter and hunting through folders!
Window Set Manager is native for Power Macintosh (also runs on 68000-based
Macintoshes). It's a small application, and it stays out of your way - it
only runs when you need it.
Window Set Manager is shareware; unregistered copies are fully functional
but can only save a limited number of window sets at a time. Registered
users can save an unlimited number of window sets.
Registration costs US $10.00 for a single-user license; Site licenses and
worldwide licenses are also available. Registration is easy and convenient
via the Kagi Shareware system (included).
System Requirements:
Macintosh or Power Macintosh
System 7.5 or better

It's a quick hack that munges
your Word Settings file so the spell checker and most of the other tools
work again. The code is really ugly since it's not mine
was written on very short notice, but it's solid.
Credit goes to Ed Wynne who actually wrote this thing, I just cleaned it up
a bit and released it.
Word Fixer is public domain, and full source is included.

Subject: [*] Zippier Zip 4.3
Price: Freeware
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini
Zippier Zip is a free patcher that allows you to modify the original Iomega
Driver 4.3 and Iomega Guest 1.1 software for the Macintosh, which ships with
all
Zip drives.
- The patched Iomega Driver no longer complains when you start up with your Zip
drive turned off, and more generally when no Iomega drive is found at startup.
The driver is still not loaded, but you won't get the annoying error message at
the end of the startup process.
- The patched Iomega Guest application no longer displays a message when the
driver is successfully loaded, so you don't have to click OK or type Enter
every
time you load the driver after startup.

Anyone know anything about these things, I believe it to be from an IBM setup.
Can it be used with a Mac?
Is there any special software necessary for proper setup and operation?

According to Steve Dorner "that's a feature" of Eudora Pro v3.0. To receive
Info-Mac digests normally, under Special>Settings...>Attachments make sure
that "Receive MIME digests as attachments." is unchecked. This will fix the
problem for mail digests that you receive in future.
