*** Arnold's Midi Player 2.7.1b ***
Shareware $10 or a nice postcard if you're a poor student.

A.M.P is an application that plays any MIDI file on the Macintosh itself or
on an
external synthesizer. Just drag and drop a MIDI file on its icon or its window
and the song is playing! You can change controllers and programs, build song
lists like a junke-box. Moreover A.M.P. is MIDI Karaoke aware.

A.M.P. needs
- a Mac LC with system 7.0 (or better) and "Macintosh Drag and Drop" extension
(inclued in system 7.5). System 7.5 or better is recommanded.
- QuickTime 2.x (2.5 recommanded) extensions or Apple MIDI Manager extensions
or
OMS extensions or MIDIShare extensions.

You can choose between two kinds of MIDI output:
- QuickTime Music (to play with the Mac internal sound circuit)
- Apple MIDI Manager or Opcode OMS or MIDIShare (to play on real external MIDI
devices on the Modem/Printer port).

New in 2.7.1b
- Bug fixes in song list
- Some internal engine modifications

New in 2.7b
- PPC native version available separately for registered users
- Hierarchical song list
- Full screen karaoke
- Bug fixes

Subject: [*] Boris's Aaron Patch II...2

(This is the French version of the release II of the Boris's Patch for
Aaron 1.4)

As many many of people, enjoying the first version of the patch, wrote me by
E-mail their comments, asking me also to improve it by some small changes as on
the little bit too much "sexy" alert icon and the too much French apearance, by
the presence of small French Flags... I made a new release of the patch,
answering to all those requests and even more. In the French version, of
course,
the small French Flags are still included in the changes... But in the French
version only!... This patch will add to your version 1.4 of the famous
extension
"Aaron" much more colours and fun. I created it, just because:
"It's much better with a Mac!..."

Enjoy it and write me your comments...

Subject: [*] Focus Comatose v4.2.2

Comatose will help you prolong the life of your computer and save on
electricity while doing so!! It allows you to put your computer to sleep
rather than shut down the entire system. It works with all Macintoshes
Plus and later running system 7 or later and only 145K of memory.
Comatose spins down all hard drives on all SCSI buses and dim the screen
to black. The screen blacking allows some monitors to also power down,
adding to electricity savings. Your computer will run quieter when
comatosed and takes a fraction of time to start up when compared to
switching off or shut down. Comatose also has screen saver capability.
You can specify how many minutes before the screen dims and how many idle
minutes before drives spin down. Your computer will be able to wake up
with an incoming phone call, receive a fax and go back to sleep. Perfect
for using that old Mac sitting in the closet as a stand alone fax!

Key features:
- Auto Spin down/Screen Off
- Screen Saver & Energy Star Support
- Password protection
- Digital Clock sreen saver (bouncing!)
- Full async. sound playback of sound files of any size!!
- Sound recording capability (using your built-in Mac microphone)

Minimum system configuration of:
* Hardware: Any Macintosh or Power Macintosh (Plus and later).
* System: 7 and higher.
* 155K of free memory.

Focus comatose is $25 shareware.

Note: This update fixes some minor bugs and adds screen saver plug-in
capability. Users of any older version should upgrade to this version.

This software is shareware and can be distributed as such on with
shareware collections and CD's provided it is not changed in any way.

native PowerPC code inside applications, control panels,
extensions and all other executable files. It can check
individual files as well as folders or entire disks; it

NOTE: REQUIRES MATH COPROCESSOR OR POWER MACINTOSH

PowerXplorer is a small application I wrote to test the
Power Macintosh speed in native floating-point calculations. It
draws the Mandelbrot set and lets you explore it by zooming in
and out at will.
PowerXplorer is a "fat" application: it contains code for both
the 680x0 processors and the new PowerPC chip. The 680x0 code
requires at least a 68020 and a 68881 coprocessor; it doesn't
run on a 68LC040 because that chip has no math coprocessor.
PowerXplorer requires 256 colors (or grays) to display the
images properly; with thousands or millions of colors the image
is correct, but there's no color animation.

New in 1.0.5:
- More optimizations for the BeBox port, recompiled with
CodeWarrior 9.

Subject: [*] QuickPop 2.11

QuickPop does just two things, but was designed to do them very well. This
program performs functions that will benefit any Mac user and is extremely
simple to set up and use. You can now define all those useless function
keys on your extended keyboard (along with any other keys) to perform
useful tasks!

The first is to allow you to assign "Hotkeys" to up to fifty (50)
applications, documents, Apple Menu Items, control panels, FKEYs, monitor
depth (colors) or speaker volume settings. When the "Hotkeys" are pressed
>From within most any application, the selected item will instantly launch
(or change speaker or monitor settings).

The second is to allow you to have a menu pop up anywhere on the screen
when you hold a key (option, command, control or shift in any combination)
and click and hold down the mouse button. From this pop-up menu you can
launch your favorite documents, applications, control panels, FKEYs, Apple
Menu Items, change monitor depth (colors) settings, change the speaker
level or switch to any other running application.

New Features in version 2.1
Fixes several bugs found in earlier versions. If QuickPop would not run on
your computer before, that has now been fixed. Also, you can no longer
assign the same key to two different items.

Bug fixes in version 2.11
This version fixes a bug that would cause some applications on some Macs to
crash. If you are using version 2.1, please upgrade to this version, thank
you.

Some uses for QuickPop:
* Change monitor settings (for those games that require
different monitor settings) and assign a single key to
instantly switch to 16 colors, 256 colors or Black &
white, whatever you need!
* Have a key (or keys) to turn the speaker off or to a
different level, no need to go to the Sound control panel
anymore!

Subject: [*] ramBunctious 1.1 -- a RAM disk program

RAM disks are a convenient way to achieve high performance in many
applications.
Hard drive accesses are hundreds of times slower than memory accesses. RAM
disks
set aside an amount of memory that the system can then use as a "normal" hard
drive, floppy drive, or any other storage device -- except that they're much
faster.

ramBunctious maintains the advantages and eliminates the disadvantages of most
RAM disk programs. Several options let you customize for your desired balance
of
speed, security, safety, and versatility. For example, you can set it to write
through to a file on a (real) disk for safety in the event of a crash. You can
mount as many RAM disks as you wish (or as many as you have memory for)
simultaneously. ramBunctious uses the same memory that applications use, so the
memory used for each RAM disk is instantly available for other applications as
soon as the RAM disk is put away.

ramBunctious 1.1 adds several new features:
- The ramBunctious driver was optimized. It is now up to 30% faster.
- A Startup Items folder lets you specify items to open when the RAM disk is
mounted.
- ramBunctious is now a fat application, running natively on PPC and 68K Macs.
- ramBunctious's underlying architecture was stabilized for easier
maintenance.
- There are several minor user interface improvements:
- It indicates its progress when mounting RAM disks.
- There is a Save button in each settings window for convenient saving.
- There is also a Save menu item.
- ramBunctious now uses Troy Gaul's Infinity Windoids.

Many shareware programs are crippled in order to force users to register before
they have a full-featured application. Other shareware programs force users to
wait a few extra seconds before they can begin using the program. Still others
present a dialog every time so users will feel guilty enough to pay.
ramBunctious, on the other hand, is not crippled, is usable immediately after
it's launched, and does not forcibly present "guilt-inducing" dialogs. Every
feature is available to every user, registered or not. We felt that if we were
going to spend a single minute working on this product, we ought to work on

Subject: [*] Reminder v1.3 - Birthday and dates Reminder

Reminder is a small program that reminds you of current birthdays and dates.
The advantages of Reminder are:

1. Data can be edited in the program itself. So you don' t have to start a
text-editor each time you want to add or change an entry.

2. Reminder distinguishes between bithdays and dates. Dates are events that
occur only once while birthdays come back every year.

Just put an Alias in the "Startup Items"-folder and you won't miss any
birthday or date again.

Shutdown Delay displays a dialog at Restart/Shutdown time
which gives the user five choices:
- do nothing and let the Mac complete the original command;
- cancel and smoothly return to the calling application;
- restart the Macintosh;
- shut down and turn the power off;
- force a quit and attempt to return to the Finder.

New in version 2.3.1:

Subject: [*] SimpleText Color Menu 2.1.4J (Japanese version)

SimpleText Color Menu 2.1.4J is the Japanese version of Alessandro Levi
Montalcini's SimpleText Color Menu 2.1.4.
I was asked to make this by many Japanese using SimpleText-J. No one seems
to have done this job so far, so I do it. This is freeware as you know.

* SimpleText Color Menu is a free drag & drop utility that installs an
extra cool Color menu and an extra useful Goodies menu inside Apple's
SimpleText text editor (versions 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.3.1 only).

* You get color, a Find/Replace command, a Windows submenu, document
statistics, printing margins and default font/size/style/color settings for
unstyled documents.

* SimpleText Color Menu comes with a complete online documentation that
can be displayed at any time or saved as a SimpleText document.

New in version 2.1.4:
- Added support for non-US versions of SimpleText 1.3 (the U.S. version
resource reads 1.0.3, whereas some international resources have been
properly fixed to 1.3.0).

Thanks to our Alessandro, for permission to localize his excellent programs.
All praise should go to Alex, and all complaint should be sent to me. :-)

Subject: [*] SING 1.7

SING! is an application which allows you to use the voices of the Speech
Manager
to "sing" according to your choice of words, pitch, and note duration. It
automates the laborious procedure necessary when specifying pitch and rate for
each word to be sung. Also, successive calls to the Speech Manager
(necessary due
to the apparent 30 [[pbas]] limit per call) are arranged in such a way as to
minimize interruption of song.

Version 1.7 corrects a problem in determining the correct number of notes when
re-loading songs for further work. -Also incorporates more standard Macintosh
menu interface.

SING! requires system software 7.1 or later, a 68030 processor or faster,
and the
Speech Manager extension must be present in the Extensions Folder. Use of
Speech
Manager version 1.4, Macintalk 3, and associated voices is highly recommended.
Macintalk 2 and its voices (Boris, Marvin, etc.) and Macintalk Pro and its
voices
(Bruce, Victoria, Agnes) are NOT supported. If the following voices (among
others) are available to "SimpleText", then it is likely that a compatible
version of the Speech Manager is installed: Kathy; Junior; Princess; Ralph;
Zarvox

SING!v1.7 requires at least 2 MB RAM to run on a 68030- or 68040- based
computer, and at least 3 MB RAM to run on a PPC. A PPC-only version is
available by request.

SING!v1.7 may be included in official CD compilations drawn from INFO-MAC and
UMICH archives. Permission is granted for its use in other compilations as
long
as the program is unaltered, the ReadMe document and sample songs are included,
and the author is contacted first.

Subject: [*] Snood 1.1

Snood 1.1 is an upgrade to Snood, my puzzle game. This upgrade fixes
some bugs and adds several features, including a draggable game window
and adds a new operational mode, "Total Control" mode. This mode allows
faster play on older Macintoshes (e.g. Mac II) and will minimize or
eliminate any potential INIT conflicts or other performance problems.

DESCRIPTION:
Snood is a puzzle game which emphasizes thought rather than reflexes.
Your goal is to remove the Snoods from the playfield by launching other
Snoods up at them. You can do this in two ways: (1) Transporting Snoods:
Matching up three or more Snoods of the same type allows them to transport
away, and (2) Dropping Snoods: If after a Snood transport some Snoods are
no longer connected to the top of the playfield, they will drop to safety.

Snood has no time limits, allows you to play at your own pace, is
non-violent and non-confrontational, and has a variety of difficulty
levels, including one for children. Under "Background Friendly" mode,
Snood allows other programs CPU time, so you can play while printing,
downloading, or copying files.

Subject: [*] SoundApp 2.1.1

I'm happy to announce the availability of SoundApp 2.1.1. SoundApp is the
premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is
suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the
popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite
sound samples and stand-alone usage. SoundApp remains freeware, so you
may use it at no cost. Information regarding licensing the conversion
and playback routines can be found in the About Box documentation.

SoundApp has been mailed to the popular "macgifts" list, and should
appear on Info-Mac and the University of Michigan's archive sites in a
few days. In addition, you can download it directly via the WWW from:

SoundApp 2.1.1 corrects the following problem:

* Fixed problem with playback on 68K Macs.

SoundApp requires the following:

* At least a 68020 or PowerPC-based Macintosh (sorry 68000 users!),
* System 7.0 or greater, and
* Sound Manager 3.1 or greater (3.1 can be obtained from Apple and 3.2
is included in System 7.5.3).

In addition, the following optional items are recommended:

* QuickTime 2.0 or greater for QuickTime support (2.1 preferred),
* The Drag Manager for drag and drop use in the Play Lists (part of
System 7.5 and later),
* A PowerPC-based Macintosh for MPEG support and better performance.

Please note, I have no plans to support System 6.x, 68000-based Macs,
MPEG on 680x0-based Macs or earlier versions of the Sound Manager,
sorry.

Subject: [*] Stack Sifter

Stack Sifter is a 37K HyperCard 2.x stack that enables you to automatically
select cards (either by marking or creating a 'substack') in any other
stack. You
do this by defining a condition, either simple or complex, and then telling
Stack
Sifter to mark or copy every card in the background that satisfies this
condition. (E.g. for an address stack you could select cards for, say "all
outer-metropolitan contacts who have bought from the company during 1993 or
1994".) Thus, Stack Sifter adds some of the searching capabilities of a
database
to HyperCard.

Price: Freeware
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini

Startup Player is a definitely cool extension that plays a
sound over and over until all other extensions have loaded
and the Finder comes out. The sound must be in a Finder
sound file called "Startup Loop" inside the Extensions
folder (or in the System folder if you're running System 6).
Since you'll want Startup Player to start playing early in
the startup process, you may add a space before the
extension name. If you're using some kind of startup
manager, put Startup Player among the first extensions to
load (see documentation for more info).

ValueFax is the first shareware fax program for the Macintosh.
This is a commercial quality, full function product with QuickFax,
fax driver, full reception and conversion of the fax in background,
installer, and an online manual. Versions of this product have
been shipping commercially under different names for several years.
The basic product has been thoroughly tested in a variety of Mac
configurations using a variety of Class 1 and Class 2 modems (this
product will not work with modems that support Class 2.0 only or
with Apple's express modems or with Apple's Geoport modems).

Why would you want to use this product?

* you bought an external fax modem for your PC but you would
also like to use it with your Mac.
* you bought an external fax modem for the Mac but the software
that came with it is too "lite" for your work. The bundled
software may not even work in your configuration.
* you are not happy with your current fax software because it is
old and does not have all the features of ValueFax. What's more,
your current software looks like it has been ported from its
PC (ugh!) version.
* Your company owns several Macs and you are looking for a site
license instead of buying individual copies for everyone.

Support is available via email to [email protected]

do our best to make it work.

Price: Freeware
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE

Verifile is a small utility that calculates a checksum and
a CRC32 on both the data and resource forks of any file
that's dropped on it. This is useful if you want to compare
two files that are not on the same machine without having to
copy them over a network or modem connection. If the
hexadecimal numbers displayed by Verifile match, chances are
that the two files are equal. Verifile also displays the
elapsed time to measure processor and disk performance. The
PowerPC code runs a lot faster than the 68K code if the
file to verify is on a RAM disk, while the speed
improvement is smaller on slower media.

- Now freeware, updated documentation and recompiled with
CodeWarrior 9.

Subject: Apple Video System in Perf.630

I've recently been using Avid VideoShop on a PowerMac 7500 to

I realize my 630 is an LC040, so it's not going to have quite the oomph of
the 7600, but can it come close? Would upgrading to a full blown '040 help?
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Jason Torry said:

My friends and I have been researching this issue, discussing it with Apple
tech support, etc.

When offered Port Juggler, run, do not walk, to the nearest exit. First,
the product doesn't work. Second, the developer does not support it, even
to the extent of not answering the phone and not responding to voice mail
left on several long-distance phone calls to their (not toll-free!) Hawaii
phone number and e-mails from a cash customer looking for just a
replacement for a defective -unmountable- software floppy. Twice I have
purchased, tried and been forced to return the product. One major
mail-order catalog Mac retailer told me they have had so many complaints,
they are advising customers to return Port Juggler for refund, not
replacement.

Don't know anything about PortShare Pro, but, since you've mentioned it,
I'm going to check it out.

I'm using a mechanical switch box purchased in a retail electronics store
for $12 to select my printer or Paperport scanner. The first switch can be
made on the fly, but switching back requires re-booting. Apple says this
is the way serial ports work and they know of no work-around.

The answer seems to be, either to spend the big bucks for a serial card, or
to organize one's work so the shutdown required for swapping cables or the
re-boot required for the second switch, back to the original configuration,
when using a switch box invokes a minimum of inconvenience.

Anybody else know a better solution? At least three customers are ready!

MORE was the single FFFF,0000,0000best
outliner available for the Mac and many's the time I've lamented its
demise. A curse upon Symantec! But you should check out Inspiration
(can't remember the company - do an AltaVista search). Also, Aldus'
Persuasion had a pretty good outliner. The problem may be that the Mac
market tied outliners to presentation early in the game so tht when MS
PowerPoint & Aldus' Persuasion ate MORE out of market share it was
because they won the desktop presentation battle. Symantec should dust
off the code and return with a sophisticated outliner someday.

BTW, IMHO MORE was a killer app, presentation and all!
