Subject: [*] HVS Color Reduction Demo, Photoshop plugin v1.2.7

HVS Color i a demo version of a plugin for Photoshop 3.0 that uses a
psychovisual algorithm to provide extremely high quality color reduction
for 24-bit images. HVS Color is capable of producing 8-bit images that are
visually identical to the 24-bit original. Because images look good even at
low color depths, this is an excellent tool for web image developers. GIF
files generated from HVS Color images tend to be 10% to 40% smaller than
conventionally reduced images because HVS Color doesn't use dithering. The
plug-in offers control over parameters such as gamma, weighting, emphasis,
number of colors, and thresholding. Version 1.2.7 eliminates automatic
image cropping and restrictions on the number of uses.

Subject: [*] My Portfolio Manager 1.70

The following is a binhexed, stuffed file (BinHex 4.0, StuffIt Lite 3.5)
containing the file "My Portfolio Manager", an application for Microsoft
Excel 4.0 or higher, for managing equity investments.

This application ought to run just fine under System 6.0.x and System 7.x,
and requires version 4.0 or later of Microsoft Excel.

It will allow the user to keep many portfolios of stocks, bonds, mutual
funds, etc., quickly and easily make trades in these instruments, and keep
track of how well you are doing in all of them.

There is an on-line tutorial, and plenty of help to get the user started.
You can even customize help to suit your individual needs if you like.

This release replaces all previous uploaded versions of Mark's Portfolio
Manager (1.2, 1.21, 1.51, 1.55), and My Portfolio Manager 1.61, fixes some
minor bugs, improves on some of the existing features, and adds a few new
ones.

If anyone has any questions about this upload, we can be reached (for now,
at least :) ) on the Internet at: [email protected]

Thanks very much, and we hope that you find this program useful.

wake up everyday at a certain time, log into my Earthlink account by
activating the FreePPP connection, and then having Emailer grab my mail.

Everything's easy:
1) the powerbook will wake up by itself
2) Emailer can get mail when you tell it to
3) the powerbook will go to sleep by itself

The problem is getting FreePPP to log in.

Anyone out there have any cool ideas? I tried AppleScript but it didn't
seem to be able to communicate with it (not that I'm very knowledgable
about AppleScript.)

Michael,

try using PPPop on top of FreePPP!
Contrary to FreePPP's readme file, the recent version of PPPop _does_ work
with FreePPP.
Now, PPPop can launch and close PPP connections and is fully
AppleScript-able, which is what you might need.

Bear with me, I'm not using AppleScript, but you can define a script that
opens PPPop first, starts a connection, then opens Emailer and gets your
mail. Same in reverse once your e-mails have been downloaded.

There are AppleScript launchers around (small utilities) that start a
specific AppleScript at a specific time. I guess you would need one of
those too.

Another approach:

PPPop also offers to auto-start a connection and auto-launch specific
applications/files/AppleScripts once it is started itself. By that you can
have PPPop auto-establish a connection and launch Emailer without the need
to do any AppleScript-ing on your side. All you would need is another
utility that starts up PPPop at a certain time the rest would be done by
PPPop itself (it can auto-close the PPP connection and/or Emailer after a
user-defined timer interval).

PPPop is available via FTP on Info-Mac or check out Rob Friefeld's web page
at:
http://users.deltanet.com/~friefeld

Hope this helps,

Andrew,

I use PPPop by Rob Friefeld. It's a small application (uses about 200-250K
of RAM) that displays just a single button (two sizes available: 32x32
pixel or 25x16) which toggles your PPP connection.
It also offers to display another even smaller window beneath it, that
displays either of three timers:
- total time (resests itself on a specific day of the month if you like to)
- session time (time of active/last PPP connection)
- daily time (total of all of today's PPP connections)

Both the button window and the timer window can be positioned freely and
independent of each other on your screen.

PPPop also has a "Launcher", where you can define specific applications,
files and AppleScripts that launch right out of PPPop. You can even define
a hotkey for launching those items. Effectively when hitting one of your
defined hotkeys, PPPop would first open a PPP connection then launch the
assigned application. But there are some interesting options for
fine-tuneing:

Regarding your note:
PPPop does time _all_ PPP connections _while_running_ - regardless if you
open the connection via PPPop's button or via the MacTCP, FreePPP or other
control panel. However, it does _not_ time anything if it is not running.

Now for the fine-tuning part: PPPop also offers to "auto-launch" Launcher
items you defined as soon as it opens and/or closes a PPP connection. And
also PPPop offers to do this as soon as you start PPPop itself. So to get
what you want, you would define an application (or more) to auto-launch as
soon as PPPop is opened and launch an AppleScript that closes PPPop as soon
as this connection is closed.

Effectively each time you double-click on PPPop's icon PPPop's timer is
started and then your appication(s) and as soon as you close the connection
via PPPop's button, your application is closed and then PPPop itself. That
way you only time your PPP connections while launching them via double
clicking on PPPop's icon. Any other way of establishing a PPP connection
will not cause the timer to update.

PPPop is available via FTP on Info-Mac or check out Rob Friefeld's web page
at:

http://users.deltanet.com/~friefeld

Check it out, I like it a lot. Better than all the other timers around.
Hope this helps,

Andy

Readers like me who don't have access to a big store full (or college
lab full) of monitors and who want to get the largest image for a given
screen size might consider the Sony Multiscan series.

We recently got a Multiscan15sx. This $420 Trinitron monitor has image
size, centering and shape controls on the front. They let you expand the
image to cover the full screen. Ours is used in 832x624 mode. The screen
is completely filled by the image. I just measured the image at a hair
under 14" (35 cm) diagonal.

So what does the "15" in 15sx mean? Nothing meaningful. By any non-BS
measure of utility, the 15sx is a 14" monitor. What will it take to stop
this kind of misdirection by the industry?

Ignore what they tell you you're going to get. Or what you will get is
*naughtyword*. Do what Pythagoras or Leonardo would have done. Take a
ruler to the store.

Subject: Apple Video Player

Hello Macpeople,

I was hoping to view the Olympics whilst working using Apple Video Player.
When I tried to open it I was given a dialog which read:

"AppleVideoPlayer requires the Video Startup Extension to be installed.
Make sure it has been installed in the Extensions Folder and that your
computer has been restarted."

Now the extension is in the Extension Folder already, so I turn to Norton
Utilities to help out. It gives me some advice about bad creation date
should I fix it? So I said OK and finished the scan, rebooted and tried
again. Same dialog :-(
Then I rebuilt the desktop and zapped the PRAM, clutching at straws by now.
No good. I ran Norton again, sometimes it can help, not this time.
So is there anyone out there who can steer me in the right direction? I
don't want to have to do a re-install of my System Folder as it has been
done recently when I moved up to OS 7.5.3. I have a Performa 630 which
installs from CDROM and you have little control over being selective about
what you install, unless someone can tell me which of the disk copy files
contains the Video Startup init?

Any advice really needs to be emailed, not only to save the bandwidth but
to get me viewing asap :-)

TIA

The Iomega ZIP drive is sold in two versions: SCSI and Parallel. The SCSI
version will work on both PCs (with a SCSI card) and Macs, and it comes
with software for both DOS and Macs. I'm sure the same thing applies to
the Epson version, but read the box to make sure.

You might find it cheaper to order from MacWarehouse Canada,

Subject: Connecting Networks w/ ARA

Hello!

I'm using Apple Remote Access 2.1 to remotely contact a collection of three
machines across town. It works fine with one-to-many, but I would like to
do a many-to-many transmission (all the macs on my network able to connect
to all the macs on the other network).

Here's the best graphical representation I can do:

a b c d
| | | |
|------------------------
|
ARA
|
|----------------
| | |
x y z

I would like B to connect to Z, D to Y, C to X, etc.

How can I do this, using ARA?

Thanks!

Subject: Eudora mailboxes

I'm using Eudora 3.0. When I receive an Info-Mac update it arrives as a
cover page plus an attachment.

The attachment contains the individual Info-Mac notices. After I read and
delete those notices, I then usually trash the cover sheet.

That's when I encounter this anomaly, Even though I've trashed everything
related to the update, Eudora has set up the each individual Info-Mac
update as a separate Mailbox.

In order to get rid of them I have to open the Mailbox window in Settings
menu r and individually remove each one. It's not a big deal but I figure
that I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas?

THere should be an "Allow applications to open connections" [or something
like that] checkbox in FreePPP Setup or ConfigPPP [whichever one you
have].

Make sure that's checked, and when then when any application attempts to
open a TCP connection [as Eudora does], FreePPP will dial and connect for
you.

(I posted an earlier version of the following to comp.sys.mac.printing
and, despite 3 sympathetic replies, received no solution consistent with
the use of virtual memory. So I'm trying the Digest.)

I'm getting pretty fed up with the long delays in printing in the
background on my HP Deskwriter 550C on a Power Mac 6100 running virtual
memory. (Typical symptoms: machine locks up for 1-2 minutes, with
constant hard disk thrashing, when printing even a short document.)
I've seen this and similar symptoms mentioned several times in
newsgroups, but I've never seen a cure mentioned.

I was thinking about switching to QuickDraw GX for printing, if this
offers a cure to these problems. Can anyone who's tried it please say
whether it does?

Or another alternative: does HP background printing behave better if I
turn off virtual memory and install RAM Doubler?

Relevant current extension versions: HP Background 4.0.6 and DW 6.0.3
(which I believe to be up-to-date for the 550C).

Sure. I've been running SLIP for a couple of years on a Classic.
Make sure the Classic has 4 Mb, set it up with sys 7.0 (free), and
you're ready. I'm afraid most SLIP/PPP applications won't work under sys
6.x, but that's just a guess.

Netscape doesn't work without Color QuickDraw, but last time I checked
(about 8 months ago) other browsers (MacWeb, Mosaic etc) do. Eudora
works just fine without color, as does Fetch, NewsWatcher, and so on.

this enough info?

The Mac came first, in 1984.

Apple got the basic ideas for a graphical interface from work done at Xerox
PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), but refined it a lot and released the
Apple Lisa in 1983. The first Mac was released in 1984, borrowing heavily
>From the Lisa but with further refinement.

According to Byte magazine, Feb. 1994, many features that are now common on
PCs were first introduced on Macintosh computers:

- Cut and Paste
- Undo
- Point-and-Click menu selection
- API (Application Programming Interface) (though Apple didn't call it that)
- Built-in networking capability
- Plug-and-play philosphy
- Dynamic memory allocation
- Hypertext
- 24-bit color capability

I don't recall when Microsquash released Windows 1.0, but it was definitely
after the Mac, and it was pretty lousy. They finally improved it enough
with version 3.0 that it started to become popular.

Incidentally, MS-DOS (first called PC-DOS) was an imitation, too. They
copied much of the design from an older operating system, called CP/M,
which ran on a variety of different microcomputers. Even the disk
directory structure and the operating system calls were nearly identical to
those of CP/M.

Since PPP says it's still connected, it's not PPP that hung up. The modems
either hung up or lost the connection, but the PPP software doesn't
recognize right away that this has happened. You can force PPP to
recognize that the connection is lost by telling it to close the connection.

As for why the connection was lost, there are several possibilities.

The most likely cause is noise on the phone line, which would interfere
with the modems' ability to talk to each other and cause them to hang up.
Noise on the lines can be due to problems with the telephone system, the
telephone wiring in your house, or somebody picking up a phone on the same
line elsewhere in the house.

A less likely cause is a power outage or computer crash at your Internet
Service Provider.

Another possibility is that your ISP had to take the system offline in
order to do some maintenance.

Finally, some ISPs set a login time limit which cuts you off after you've
been online for a certain amount of time.

If you find that you can log in again right away, then it was either line
noise or a per-call time limit.

Is there a program like MacTCP prefs switcher that works with open transport?

Depending where I am I use ethernet, appletalk or a ricochet modem to
connect my powerbook to the net.

At present I have to do a multistep process that involves loading the
correct config file under the Appletalk control panel (ethernet or
modem/printer port) and then loading the correct config file for the TCP/IP
control panel (ricochet, ethernet, or appletalk). Is there a program or
applescript that can do this for me?

The one limitation I had with MacTCP pref switcher using classic appletalk
was that it only swapped out the tcpprefs file and did not change the
network control panel (ethernet and appletalk).

If anyone out there has a suggestion I would love to hear from you.

Thank you,

Yes. In particular the early PowerMac 6100/7100/8100 machines with NuBus.

I don't know but this is an effort that is funded by Apple and they don't
have loads of cash to throw around on things that don't make money. But
you have to suspect that porting it to the newer PowerMacs should be an
important move...

You can go directly to the "source" to find out the answers:

There they say:

| Apple Computer is supporting a project with the Open Software Foundation
| Research Institute (OSF-RI) to port Linux, a freely distributed version
| of UNIX, to a variety of Power Macintosh products. This version of Linux,
| known as MkLinux, operates on the OSF-RI Mach (Mk) microkernel, running
| natively on the PowerPC microprocessor.

One of the problems that the Linux developers are having is that as the Mac
hardware matured much changed. And Apple did a beautiful job making the
changes invisible to the user.

Like the dashboard of a car, no matter what engine they put under the hood,
and regardless of the suspension you could still drive the car. This was
what Apple aimed for (and if you ask me they hit the nail on the head!).

But this makes the Linux developers job of building a single set of drivers
for all of the machines difficult. So they were starting with one set of
machines, and that was the 6100/7100/8100 (NuBus, PowerPC 601) machines.

NOTE: The Official Linux site is:

But I just tried it and it reported that no DNS entry was found. Maybe
they had the same problem that Microsoft's MSNBC server did... not paying
the $100 for their domain name...

that's mean... if you only are gona use 5 fonts on your document, try
quiting all the rest, this is because MS Word start up one by one font, and

So if you have Suitcase II try quiting all font and let only the system

Once you have finished your work in MS Word, you can try opening the rest

Subject: Newbie questions

Hi, all. I've just had my Performa 6300CD for a few months,
after spending years with DOS machines and a much-beloved
Atari 800XL. I think I'm starting to get the hang of things, but
I have three questions for the community.

1) On my PC I use MS-Kermit, a freeware comm package with a
very good VT100/102/220/320 emulator. Among its features is
support for the VT terminals' slaved printer port escape
codes, which permits a host system to direct appropriate data
to the printer attached to my PC. Neither Claris Works 4 nor
ZTerm seems to support this function--output that the host
tries to send to my printer simply scrolls across the screen.
What Mac terminal software has this functionality? (Actually,
MS-Kermit not only supports slaved printer output, but allows
me to redirect the slaved printer output to a file or other
device, so this is question really tests the proposition that
good Mac software exists to match any good DOS program.)

2) Does one need a disk defrag utility for the Mac, or does
System 7.5 take care of this itself? I have not seen reference to
a defragger in any of the archives on http://mirrors.apple.com.
I'd look on D.C. area BBS's if I knew of any, but I don't.

3) One of my most-relied upon DOS programs is a good thought
processor/outliner. I use MaxThink. I know that Symantec used
to sell a well-regarded outliner/presentation program for the
Mac called MORE (developed by the author of the pioneering
ThinkTank), and that there was once a Mac version of MaxThink,
but these programs now seem to be defunct. Any recommendations
or suggestions? (Don't mention Word and WordPerfect; their outlining
functions are geared towards formatting, not organization.)

Thanks for any help you can provide!

On the other hand, that's not a great price. MacMall has the Epsom version

I have had GREAT results with PPPop and PPPremier Timer (both from

connection or termination. PPPop has more timing features and
PPPremier Timer is better looking and takes up less RAM. I have had
a lot of luck scripting both of them (although AE is best supported
in PPPop, it has never seemed to make a difference).

I would get them both and test drive each for a week and see which
feels right for you. I recently switched to PPPremier Timer because
my server has gone to unlimited online time and I no longer need the
