FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
Alex's Encrypt is a simple encryption utility that encrypts
one file at a time. The encryption key is stored in a
variable-length key file that can be as small as 512 bytes or
as large as the entire file to encrypt.
Using a key file instead of a password makes the encryption
only suitable for cases where the key can be stored in a
different location or sent separately to the receiver.
I built this utility so that I could store large encrypted
files in my ftp directory and send relatively small key files
by e-mail to the people that had to download them. Password
protection on the compressed archives was not enough, since it
still allowed everyone to peek at the archive's contents.

CalConvert is a small shareware utility that does integer
arithmetic calculations and converts integer values to
different bases (decimal, hexadecimal, binary, octal or any
custom base between 2 and 32) or to an OSType (a sequence of
four ASCII characters). A bit field representation is available
to inspect and set each bit separately. The conversion may be
signed or unsigned - you can always enter a signed value, it
gets converted to unsigned if needed; the result may be
interpreted either as a word (2 bytes) or as a long word (4
bytes).

CloseDoc is a free system extension that allows you to close
OpenDoc documents the way you were used to, i.e. by typing
Command-Q (for "Quit"). OpenDoc is a great concept, but the
rest of us is still used to the good old world of applications
where quitting an application also means closing its documents.
CloseDoc simply turns any Command-Q keystroke that has no menu
equivalent into a Command-W keystroke, thus mapping any
disallowed "Quit" attempt into a "Close" attempt.

Price: $10 (shareware)
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini
FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
The Coffee Timer is a very simple countdown timer I built
after frying my third coffee pot. Like many other programmers,
I often drink coffe while working - I mean Italian expresso
coffee, the kind you make with a "moka" coffee pot. However, I
don't usually wait for the coffee to be ready before going back
to work, which often results in the coffee pot being forgotten
on the fire for hours. This is a programmer's solution to the
problem: a simple countdown timer with a loud alarm and a
couple of other useful options.
For those of you who need more flexibility in their timer,
the Coffee Timer allows a KeyQuencer macro to be run when the
timer times out. This lets you instruct your Mac to do pretty
much anything at alarm time. The Coffee Timer works with both
KeyQuencer 1.2.x and the forthcoming KeyQuencer 2.0 (which you
don't want to miss!).
Quite obviously, the Coffee Timer is not limited to your
daily coffee break. You can use it to remind yourself of
anything that must happen in the near future... filling the
bath tub? taking a short sleep? delaying a fax? Just launch
the Coffee Timer and let it help your memory and your watch.
You may even put an alias to Coffee Timer in your Startup
Items folder to prevent yourself from sitting in front of your
Mac for long periods of time. All you have to do is take a
break every time the timer starts bugging you...

Subject: [*] Copland-Style File Transfers for FirstClass
This patcher changes resources in your FirstClass 3.0 application so the
file transfer progress bar looks sort of like the one that Aaron gives you
in the Finder (i.e., like the one that will be in Mac OS 8). It may not
look right with older versions of FirstClass.
A backup of the original application will be placed in the Trash so that
you can retrieve it in case you change your mind.
Please note that any settings files which contain resources that also
modify the file transfer window will override the resources in the
FirstClass application. So, the effect of this patch will only show up when
you are using a settings file which has not already been modified.

Subject: [*] HandyMan 1.4.1 - Control Strip Launcher Module
It is designed to allow quick and easy access to applications, Control Panels,
Desk Accessories, Folders and other documents stored on your Macintosh,
without having to navigate through several RFinder WindowsS or through a
multi-layered, hierarchical Apple menu.
It works by clicking on icons installed in a floating window, or dropping
documents onto them. This approach is much handier than aliases that are on
the desktop because the floating windows that contain the icons can never be
covered by windows. HandyMan also requires a lot less desktop space than the
same number of icons on the desktop.
Most important changes in 1.4.1:
% Fixed problem where HandyMan aliases was not found when in the preference
folder.
% Fixed problem where HandyMan showed complete preference folder.
% Changes to Italian Catalog and added Italian Docs (thanks to Michele Pizzi)
% Added 'original' Horizontal and Vertical Separator icons, check out the
homepage for more icons (by Raymond Carles)
Most important changes in 1.4:
% Fixed problem of not properly removing R+S icon when unchecking RShow
Aliases FolderS and RShow Folder StructureS was off (Reported by Jeremy
Keens).
% Drops from documents from the module onto Finder applications work now.
% RAdd Row/ColumnS command added to Configuration menu.
% Introduced catalog files.
% TextLabels can go under the icons now. Shift select RShow TextLabelsS
(Request from Brett Borowski).
% Added Entry Tiling next to Icon Tiling.
% Dragged icon's can't no longer be dropped on itself.
And several more bugfixes...
see docs for full history.

Subject: [*] HVS Color Demo Installer, Photoshop plug-in v1.2.6
HVS Color is a demo version of a plug-in for Photoshop 3.0 that uses a
psychovisual algorithm to provide extremely high quality color reduction
for 24-bit images. HVS Color is capable of producing 8-bit images that are
visually identical to the 24-bit original. Because images look good even at
low color depths, this is an excellent tool for web image developers. GIF
files generated from HVS Color images tend to be 10% to 40% smaller than
conventionally reduced images because HVS Color doesn't use dithering. The
plug-in offers control over parameters such as gamma, weighting, emphasis,
number of colors, and thresholding.
This version 1.2.6 fixes various bugs. The demo may be
freely reposted, including the archive CD-ROMs.

Hello everyone,
this is version 3.0 of IIe, an Apple //e emulator.
THE SOUND BITE:
Do you wish you could use all of your Apple II software on your Mac? Well
now you can, with IIe, the Apple //e emulator for Macs and PowerMacs!
THE ELEVATOR STATEMENT:
IIe is a fully functional Apple //e emulator that supports all of the
graphics mode, all of the Apple //e keyboard keys, and all of the
currently available Apple II disk image formats. You can even access your
3.5" Apple II disks from your Mac's floppy disk drive! This version can
also access any ProDOS partitions on your Mac's hard disk, and it can
even save ProDOS files directly in any of your Mac's folders!
REQUIREMENTS:
This program works on all colour-capable Macs and PowerMacs. System 7.0 or
later and the Thread Manager is required. A PowerMac and System 7.5.1
(which has the Thread Manager built into it) is the recommended platform
for this program. Warning: this emulator's performance is poor on 68020
Macs. Performance is adequate on 68030 Macs. 68040 and PowerPC Macs will
get good performance from this version.
The Apple //e ROMs are NOT included. Instructions for transferring or

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
List Files is a handy utility that creates a text catalog
of anything you drop on it. You can format the text in many
ways and set up file filters to look for specific files.
You may create different worksets that can be recalled either
>From a menu or by holding down some keys when you drop
things on List Files' icon, so you can switch between
cataloging your floppies and searching for big text files
in a flash. List Files can save your catalogs automatically to
different destination folders, so you don't have to save
them manually for every disk or cartridge you want to list.
It can also search entire folders very quickly to find a
specific file inside one of your catalogs.
WEB MANAGERS NOTE: List Files makes it easy to build lists
of file pointers for use in HTML documents. You can set up a
fully working HTML directory by simply dropping a folder on
List Files' icon.
New in version 2.5.4:
- Added a suffix for file sizes; fixed some "out of memory"
errors that could occur when scanning deeply nested folders;
fixed a bug that could cause the "Don't Save" button to be
automatically pressed.

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
MediaSizer is a small utility that computes the actual
size of any number of files or folders on any media. It is
very useful for creating CD-ROMs and other write-once disks
that have large allocation block sizes. The allocation block
size is the minimum space taken up by any file that is
written to a disk; the larger the disk, the larger the
allocation block size.
SyQuest cartridges, for example, have a much smaller
allocation block size than a CD-ROM; this means that if you
have lots and lots of small files on your cartridges, they
may not fit on a CD-ROM even though their total size is
smaller than the size of the CD-ROM. This happens because
each file takes at least 9.5K on a CD-ROM, even if it's only
a few bytes long.

Price: Freeware
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini
MenuBall is an absolutely useless control panel that puts
a bouncing ball in your menu bar. It won't slow down your
Mac and it shouldn't crash (but use it at your own risk).
There's only one smart use for MenuBall: since the ball
moves one step at each WaitNextEvent call, you can use it
to monitor the system activity. If the ball stops, the Mac
probably won't respond to user actions and may even be
hung; if it moves slowly, the front application is being
friendly to other processes and giving up a lot of
processor time; if it moves fast, then the front
application is eating most of the CPU time (and possibly
wasting it).

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
Name Finder is a simple database engine that lets you build
and browse lists of names. It was specifically designed to let
future parents or pet owners choose a name by repeatedly
assigning a positive or negative vote to each name in the list,
until only a few names are left.
Separate vote columns are available for the father and the
mother (or for one or two pet owners), and votes are saved to
disk so that they can be assigned separately and later compared.
The names can be sorted by vote, by sex, by name or by origin
and they can be selectively displayed according to many useful
cryteria.
Version 1.1 comes with a cool database of Italian names. You
can send me your own lists along with a short note about
yourself if you want me to store them on my ftp site or include
them in future versions of Name Finder. Name databases with 500
or more entries entitle you to a free Name Finder registration.
Names in all languages are welcome, although I suggest that the
notes and origin be written in English so that everyone on the
Net can use the database.

Subject: [*] Polish Verbs 1.0
"Polish Verbs 1.0" is an application that helps you learn and refresh your
knowledge about conjugation rules of Polish verbs. This is the second
program in my Polish for Everyone project.
The program comes with a predefined database of 2700 Polish verbs. You can
freely add new verbs and modify existing ones. You can easily add comments to
every verb. This is convenient to store the example sentences associated with
given verb. The conjugation rules are presented for all available tenses,
indicative and imperative moods and all genders. You can find even more
information about each verb like present participle, passive participle,
perfect participle, gerund, conj. pattern number, English translation
(translation is available for the first 150 verbs only - it will be updated
soon) there. There is an automatic conjugation patterns generator, so you have
to just assign a predefined pattern to your newly introduced verb. You can
associate sounds (record sound using a microphone and play it back) with each
verb. The program has an exercise window to quickly check your knowledge. You
can also attach databases prepared by other users to your own verbs database
(to share comments, sound and adding new verbs). The program can use file
sharing to share the same database in the networked environment (language
labs). 39 predefined groups of verbs make studying exceptions in a
systematic way very easy.
The program is shareware and the unregistered version has limitations.

PowerClicks is a useful Control Panel that does the
following things:
- it can make a key combination act like the mouse button;
- it can make a key combination toggle the mouse button;
- it can disable the real mouse button (if it's broken);
- it can assign graphical effects to mouse clicks.
PowerClicks can be used to temporarily replace a broken
mouse button (which would otherwise make the Mac unusable).
It is very useful for those who use PowerBooks in silent
environments, since the keyboard makes less noise than
the trackball button. The "button toggle" key can also
be useful on the PowerBooks, since you don't have to keep
the trackball button pressed while moving the ball.

This software is freeware.
TextToHTML quickly converts text or RTF files dropped onto its icon into HTML
format. With TextToHTML you can set up a basic WWW structure in 15 minutes,
starting from scratch. When converting multiple text, RTF or HTML files at
once,
it also creates an HTML index file with links to those files, complete with
graphical bullets if necessary. It can also automatically include images when
they are present.

I have an Apple 17-inch Multiple Scan monitor. The image on the screen
measures about 14.5 in. diagonally in either 832x624 or 1024X768
resolution. The black mask measures nearly 16 in., and the plastic bezel
measures 16.5 in.
When I got this monitor, the image was large enough at 832x624 resolution
to nearly display an 8.5x11 inch page in the landscape mode. I needed that
for working on a directory. The displayed area is so much larger than my
old high resolution RGB monitor that I never thought to measure the screen.

It is also a nuisance because when I quit it I have to

Subject: DragThing 1.6.1b2 accidently uploaded to AOL
A beta version of my application dock DragThing, version 1.6.1b2 has
accidently been uploaded to AOL by one of my beta testers. Although it has
hopefully been removed by now, it has some problems. It isn't really
distinguishable from the release version except for '1.6.1b2' on the filename,
and the files are post-dated to the 1st of August.
The software itself seems to work fine (although it hasn't been
fully tested), it shipped as an Installer VISE Lite installer which seems to
be crashing on some configurations, and the documentation is incomplete.
I would ask if you see any 1.6.1 version, to not pass it on, and inform the
site/person that you got it from, that it shouldn't have been uploaded yet.
I will be releasing a 1.6.2 in the next week (probably without an installer),
to hopefully clear up the confusion. Thanks for waiting - the new version
has some pretty cool stuff in it!
I'll put more information at the DragThing web page soon, at
Cheers,
James
(In fact the installer problem has just been fixed thanks to those nice people
at Mindvision, so it will probably have the installer after all...)

Subject: Hard Disk Errors
I've started getting some hard drive errors that the version of Norton
Utilities I have (2.0) can't seem to deal with. Neither can the version of
MacTools I have (3.2b). I'm waiting for an upgrade I've ordered for Norton
Utilities, hoping it will deal with the problem, but perhaps someone has a
solution in the meantime. I hate to have to go through reformatting my
hard drive.
Norton Utilities is saying "A part of the disk's directory was found to
contain some invalid information. ... fLink loop at node #2888." Then
it's unable to fix it.
In the meantime, it appears that everything in my Preferences Folder has
been trashed.
The problem began when I tried to install Softwindows 95. It crashed into
Macsbug, and then I rebooted. I've since trashed Macsbug, and also removed
Speed Doubler since I thought that might have been part of the cause.
Since then, when I try to install SoftWindows 95, it tells me that it can't
copy "delete.me" onto my disk and aborts the installation.
I'm running a PowerMac 7100/66 with 48 Megs ram, 1 Gig HD (Quantum from
APS), and System 7.5 Update 2.

I have a few miscellaneous "always wanted to know" questions and would be
very grateful for E-Mail replies to any or all (though I don't mind if you
post as well - I just don't get to check Usenet as often as I'd like and
fear I'd miss it)...
*I have a copy of ResEdit and would like to create my own permanent
startup screen (I know there are apps and inits that'll do this, but I
would like to know how) as both a deterrent to CPU and PB theft (or aid in
post-theft recovery) and a learning experience. I once saw a copy of a
posting some guy had made mentioning having done this for his PB, but
(wouldn't you know it) I deleted it thinking at the time that I'd never
get one.
I'd like to think that this is something I can cut and paste, but I've
looked in the system file and wound up stumped - is this something I
first need to know coding to do?
*How do join the various mac mailing lists? I'd very much like to have the
info (especially from groups about development, software, PowerBooks,
Apple Corporate plans/gossip, and general interest).
*What's a good book (that's still in print) for learning Macs "under the
hood" (hardware-wise)?
*I would like to do some 3-D modeling of cartoon characters for a web page
I'm working on, but am limited to a 68k (non PPC) CPU. Is there a free of
shareware program(s) that would allow me to do this? I understand that it
would probably take twice as long without the PPC acceleration, but am I
completely SOL? Is it likewise if I eventually wanted to try adding some
limited animation (maybe via java)?
*When I registered the purchase of both my CPU and my PB, I filled out the
little card that asks you to select your "free gift" and chose a mouse pad
(both times), but have yet to see either. Has anybody else been skunked?
Who should/could I contact (preferably via E-Mail) about this?
*I'm an Apple shareholder (only 4 - nothing huge, but). I had hopes that
this would qualify me for some kind of discount when I bought my Macs (at
least) or something, but other than getting the fancy-shmancy quarterly
reports (which rarely evade file 13 for longer than a day), I haven't
noticed any special entitlements.
I understand that we're lucky to be a part of Apple (and to hold stock),
etc, etc, but it would be nice if Apple gave shareholders SOME little perk
for having invested in them (like other companies do) - even a cheap pen
would be nice... Anybody know of anything like that? I know I sound whiny,
but as a non-rich guy, MY investments are all the more dear to me...
*Just for curiosity's sake, which ULTIMATELY came first - the Mac OS or
Winblows? I've always gone around saying iBM copied Mac, but I'd like to
know I'm firmly based in truth rather than relying on half-fuzzy
quasi-recollections.

Unfortunately, Milo hasn't been updated since 1990 or so, and I
suspect that it's not for sale anywhere. I first used versions 1.0 and
1.1 when they came out, and I rapidly became dependent on them. To
this day, Milo can do algebra with a pretty user interface which no
other program can do.
Theorist, by Prescience, was another excellent math product. It came
out in 1989 or so. While it didn't have Milo's amazing ability to
shift terms around algebraically, it certainly did provide a host of
amazing features. I believe Theorist was bought out by Maple, who
promptly threw the program in the trash.
I've used the competition -- Mathematica (I even bought it!), Maple,
and Matlab. But for my money, there remains no serious competitor to
Theorist when it comes to powerful mathematics with a highly usable
interface.

When you boot from the floppy, can you find a System Folder on your hard
disk? If so, does the icon of that System Folder have a small mac icon
on it? If not, open and close it; it should now. If it still doesn't,
trash it, empty the trash, and then install a new System Folder.
If that doesn't work, then whatever tool is telling you that the disk is
alright is apparently mistaken.

E-mailer allow me to do this?
Anyway, here's what worked for me:
In the Eudora folder (at the system folder), I simply renamed my Eudora=

There are two freeware/shareware C compilers for Mac (READ: C compilers,
*Not* C++ compilers). One is called Seasame C, which does not seem to
work on System 7; at least, not when I tested it. The other, and far
more powerful, is called Harvest C. Unfortunately, the author of Harvest
C abandoned the program years ago, thus it's no longer supported. Note
that the MPW libraries and headers (available on ftp sites) are needed
for Harvest C to function.
There are two other free C compilers for the Mac, GNU's GCC, including
both a C and a C++ compiler, and ICC. However, both requires Apple's MPW
(commercial) to work.

You're probably looking for Transparency 1.0, an app to select a
transparent background color in GIFs. FYI, JPEG does not support
transparency, so don't waste your time searching for such a JPEG tool.
Transparency 1.0 was first, but all of the popular shareware image

PhotoGIF, a shareware Photoshop plug-in from BoxTop Software, or their

CalConvert is a small shareware utility that does integer

four ASCII characters). A bit field representation is available

CloseDoc simply turns any Command-Q keystroke that has no menu
equivalent into a Command-W keystroke, thus mapping any
disallowed "Quit" attempt into a "Close" attempt.

on the fire for hours.

- Recompiled with CodeWarrior 9 and updated documentation.

Subject: [*] IIe 3.0 - an Apple //e emulator for Macs and PowerMacs.
Instructions for transferring or
obtaining them are included however.
Please see the included Read Me files for all the details.
IIe 3.0 is shareware.
Enjoy,
Vincent.

Price: $10 (shareware)
Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini
FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE
New in version 2.5.4:

fixed a bug that could cause the "Don't Save" button to be

Source: ftp://ftp.alpcom.it/software/mac/LMontalcini
FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE

- it can make a key combination toggle the mouse button;
- it can disable the real mouse button (if it's broken);
- it can assign graphical effects to mouse clicks.
PowerClicks can be used to temporarily replace a broken
mouse button (which would otherwise make the Mac unusable).
It is very useful for those who use PowerBooks in silent

I have an Apple 17-inch Multiple Scan monitor. The image on the screen
measures about 14.5 in. diagonally in either 832x624 or 1024X768
resolution. The black mask measures nearly 16 in., and the plastic bezel
measures 16.5 in.
When I got this monitor, the image was large enough at 832x624 resolution
to nearly display an 8.5x11 inch page in the landscape mode. I needed that
for working on a directory. The displayed area is so much larger than my
old high resolution RGB monitor that I never thought to measure the screen.

I've used the competition -- Mathematica (I even bought it!), Maple,
and Matlab. But for my money, there remains no serious competitor to
Theorist when it comes to powerful mathematics with a highly usable
interface.

>floppy icon with "X" or "?" inside.
The Mac can't find a System Folder on any available disk.
>The hard disk seems to be allright.
I assume this is based on restarting with a floppy disk, and running Disk
First Aid or somesuch. It may be true that the disk has no problems;
however, a missing or incorrectly configured System Folder is not
something that a program like DFA will report.
>The hard disk light flashs.
OK, so the disk is not entirely dead.
>Is there anybody who can help me ??
When you boot from the floppy, can you find a System Folder on your hard
disk? If so, does the icon of that System Folder have a small mac icon
on it? If not, open and close it; it should now. If it still doesn't,
trash it, empty the trash, and then install a new System Folder.
If that doesn't work, then whatever tool is telling you that the disk is
alright is apparently mistaken.

A million thanks to all who responded to my inquiry. It would be=
unimaginable to get such support from PC users.
There were several who suggested that I use Claris E-mailer instead since=
it's a one-click process. I've tried E-mailer once and quit when I couldn't=
set it up correctly. (Probably gotten too used to the Eudora interface;=
maybe next time.) I wanted to leave my mail in one server while delete it=
in another. I also wanted a different return address in one setting. Does=
E-mailer allow me to do this?
Anyway, here's what worked for me:
In the Eudora folder (at the system folder), I simply renamed my Eudora=
settings file with the associated account. Each mailbox would therefore=
have a unique Eudora setting. Aliases of these Eudora settings was then=
place in my Launcher menu items replacing my Eudora alias.
Changing my settings has never been simpler; exactly what I asked for.
Eternally grateful,
Ariel

Is there a PowerMAC native version of ResEdit that might behave?

You're probably looking for Transparency 1.0, an app to select a
transparent background color in GIFs. FYI, JPEG does not support
transparency, so don't waste your time searching for such a JPEG tool.
Transparency 1.0 was first, but all of the popular shareware image
editors now do this, so you might want to look at GIF Converter,
GraphicConverter, and clip2gif, too. The most powerful GIF tool is
PhotoGIF, a shareware Photoshop plug-in from BoxTop Software, or their
new HVS Webfocus plug-in set.
