Try scanning it in at a high resolution, then scaling it down to the desired=
screen size with antialiasing turned on. If it's just a b&w image, change=
it to 256 colors or more before scaling it; if it's a color image, make=
sure it's thousands or millions of colors before scaling. As long as you=
don't shrink it too much, the anti-aliasing ought to keep the image looking=
fairly smooth and legible.
I'm afraid I don't use Photoshop, so I can't tell you exactly how to do this=

Subject: (Q) Gatekeeper 1.3 and Sound Preferences
I currently have a Powermac 8500 on which I recently installed the
System 7.5.3 revision 2 upgrade. The installation went reasonably well,
however, Gatekeper now has a problem when I try to use either the "Sound"
portion of the Monitors and Sound control panel, or when I start up the Apple
Video Player.
In either case, Gatekeeper 1.3 reports the following two errors in
sequence:
>Gatekeeper has vetoed an attempt by "" to violate the Res(Other)
>privelege against "Sound Preferences".[RmveResource(DRVR,0)]
>Gatekeeper has vetoed an attempt by "" to violate the Res(Other)
>privelege against "Sound Preferences".[AddResource(DRVR,0)]
Notice that, for some reason, Gatekeeper can't/won't report the name
of the offending program, so the "Grant Privelege" option in Gatekeeper's
log doesn't work.
Given how often I use these applications it wouldn't be a big chore to
disable Gatekeeper when they're used, but I would prefer to not have to take
the extra step.
Does anyone have a better solution?

Subject: (Q) PowerMac 8500 and Banyan Vines
This may be asking the impossible (or highly improbable) but is there
a reasonable way of seamlessly connecting a Powermac 8500 to a Banyan
Vines network? "Reasonable" is defined as "the cost of hardware
and/or software not to exceed $2,000" (essentially the low-end cost of
putting a "corporate standard" 100Mhz Wintel machine on my desk). Seamless
meaning "the network thinks the PowerMac is a PC." The only other potential
hitch is that we may likely migrate to Windows-NT.
I've been reading good/bad reports about SoftWindows, and have seen
ads for various PC compatibility cards. I'm interested in just what will be
necessary to get me running on our LAN/WAN. We're running Banyan VINES
(version 5.54) over twisted-pair (RJ-11). The PowerMac is an 8500/120 running
System 7.5.3 rev 2 with a 1.2GB HD, and 16MB RAM.
To "upgrade" me to the company standard will likely cost more than
the $2,000, since I'm not yet considering the costs of translating
documents or purchasing equivalent software. I would obviously prefer to
improve my existing setup.

When you trash the prefs file, do you also trash the Claris Fonts document
(inside the Claris folder). I don't know if this'll work in your case, but it
has helped me in a lot of Claris font-related problems.
Alternately you could always set up a pre-formatted ss, and save as

The Eudora package does a very good job of handling multiple packages. You
can either:
- Collect mail from multiple POP accounts into a single mailbox.
- Collect mail from multiple POP accounts into separate mailboxes.
The key to making this work is having copies of the Eudora Preferences file:
- Collect mail from multiple POP accounts into a single mailbox.
Copy the Eudora preference file and change the name to reflect the
POP account name. Double-click on the preferences file and change
the Settings to point to the POP account.
Eudora will access the correct POP account each time it is launched
by double-clicking the settings file.
All mail will be collected into the one IN box.
- Collect mail from multiple POP accounts into separate mailboxes.
Follow the procedure as above but have each Eudora settings file in
a separate folder. This will cause Eudora to create a separate set
of mailboxes in each folder. You can share mailboxes between the
Eudora folders by placing the shared mailboxes in a separate folder
and an alias to the shared mail folder in each Eudora folder.
These solutions work on both the free and commerical versions of Eudora. I
also use the first method to switch access my POP account between tcp/ip
and dialup.

The PB5300c only outputs 256 colours from the external display output

on this machine since powerpoint presentations or any graphics with

The only new viruses that Disinfectant won't detect (nor did John Norstad
ever intend it to detect) are M$ Word macro viruses and HyperCard viruses.
The simple answer is that there are **far** fewer viruses 'available' for

Rest assured that John Norstad will update Disinfectant if and when any
new viruses appear.

Subject: Help - Abaton scanner no longer works under 7.5.3
Subject line says it all. Basically the Abaton software used to run my
Abaton Scan 300/Color has gone haywire since I went to System 7.5.3. It
locks, it quits, stalls - very flaky. It runs fine under System 7.1, but
unfortunately my new Power Mac won't do 7.1., even within a partition. I
assume it's not a SCSI problem, since SCSI Probe sees the scanner OK.
Has anyone seen an updated copy of Abaton's software, or perphaps a
third-party scanner interface that might work? Any other ideas before
this thing becomes a very large paperweight?

WordPerfect will sort table rows. (Not shareware, though.)
Sure do know how, and it's *very* easy via Micrsoft Word. (I have version
5.1a - the "good" one). Heres how: 1. Hold down the option key and move
your cursor down the desired column of words to highlight them.
2. Now go to pulldown menu and select: Tools/Sort. That's it!
P.S> It's intelligent enough to sort numerical charecters in the same

select a row using option/drag or pointing at top of row, then choose

List subscription and maintenannce can be done by a listserv program. An
excellent one for the Mac is Macjordomo, by Michele Fourtes. It's freeware
(with the best technical support I've ever seen), and is available at
ftp://Macjbeta:[email protected] ... /Macjbeta/
If your computer will have a dedicated connection to the internet, you may
also want to get MailShare, also known as AIMS (Apple Internet Mailing
Server?). Also freeware, you can find that at:
http://www.cybertech.apple.com
If you just have a modem ISP connection, Macjordomo works just fine.
Good luck!

What version of HDT were you using. There is a documented problem with
versions earlier than 1.8 which would cause directory corruption on large

Do you have an adequate ground for your household electrical system? A
poor ground will affect the quality of a monitor image, and many older
homes/offices do not have proper grounds. Try changing monitors and see
if the problem disappears. If it does, you need an electrician to
evaluate your wiring. If it doesn't, your dealer should be able to
diagnose the P600. Perhaps a bad VRAM SIMM or logic board?

Yes, but if you have to ask...I'd suggest you take the monitor to your
Apple dealer. The tilt is easily fixed by adjusting the yoke, but that's
NOT a job for the tinkerer.

Difficult to diagnose without actually being there...
Do you have any power supplies or power cords sitting close to the monitor? =
For example, a power adapter for external speakers? These can emit=
magnetic fields which interfere with the monitor, and it's best to place=
them as far from the monitor as possible. Unshielded speakers can also be=
a problem. Try setting up JUST the computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse,=
with NO other equipment within 3 feet of it.
When you connect it to the other computers, is there _any_ difference in the=
cabling and connectors used to connect the monitor to the computer? If so,=
the culprit might be a faulty cable or connector. Do you try the other=
computers in the same physical locations as the Pf600? What kind of=
monitor is it? Maybe it's a brand that doesn't work well with the signals=
put out by the Pf600; I think some of the older Macs put out the sync=
signals etc in a way that isn't compatible with some VGA monitors.
> However, no matter which
>computer I connect it to, the image is on a slight angle.
>
> is there any way to adjust the angle at which the image is displayed?
It can be adjusted, but the controls for it are inside, on the picture tube.=
Don't try to do it yourself -- there's a serious shock hazard, even if the=
monitor is unplugged. Leave it to a technician who knows what he's doing.

Why don't you just have all your email forwarded to a single address, so=
that you only have to check one mailbox? It is possible to set up an=
internet account so that it will forward all the mail it receives to=
another email address. For example, when I got a new internet account, I=
set up my old account so that it'll redirect all mail to my new address. I=
can still log in on either account, but Eudora only has to look at my=
mailbox on my new ISP to get all my mail; and if I happen to be logged onto=

The System Enabler for your particular system, System Enabler 332, is no
longer needed under System 7.5 and above.
System Enablers for a particular Mac are nearly always rendered obsolete when
a newer version of the System software than shipped with the Mac comes out. A
short (and simplified) explanation/timeline of why they exist:
1) Apple writes a new version (x.0) of the System software. It is designed to
work on all _existing_ Macs, and thus support for these Macs is built-in.
2) Apple releases a newer Mac. This Mac wasn't originally supported by System
x.0. Apple creates a "System Enabler" which allows System x.0 to support the
new Mac.
3) Apple releases a newer version (say, x.5) of the System software. It is
designed to work on all _existing_ Macs. Thus the "new" Mac in #2 is now
supported directly, and no System Enabler is necessary. However, the even
_newer_ Mac (due in August, but released in October)
is _not_ supported
by System x.5, so an Enabler is written for it.
This cycle goes on and on... Actually, Apple wasn't very good about this at
first. They wrote System 7.0/7.1 as a "general" system, figuring that the
System Software installers would just install the appropriate System Enabler
to work with each computer. However, there were a lot of problems and
inconveniences, so in System 7.5, they updated the System to be compatible
with all existing Macs. Nearly all System Enablers were eliminated under 7.5,
except for the following computers:
LC/Performa 5200 series
PM 6100/66
PM 7100/88
PM 8100/100 or 110
All PCI Macs
PB 190/5300/2300 series
However, yet again, under System 7.5.3, even these enablers were eliminated.
Hope this wasn't too confusing
. If you want a table of all the System
Enablers and what Macs they were for, as well as a bunch o' other info, check
out The InformInit (downloadable at the URL below).

The reason it hasn't been upgraded is because there are no new Mac virus

Have you tried BBEdit Lite (freeware)? It will sort the words and you can
even columnize them (although the words will be separated with tabs; I
would recommend ClarisWorks 4.0 to put them in columns).

IMHO you should do the upgrade in incremental jumps, to get you used to the
freeze ups and crashes you are likely to encounter as you move 'up'. I run
Claris Works 2.1 on 7.5.3, with a 630 and have no problems that I didn't
before the move 'up'.
I am about to stepback a pace to 7.5.1 and stay there until Copland comes
out. I have plenty of time to save for a Power Mac the way OS 8 is being
continually put back.
Hope this TidBit justifies the bandwidth.

Try scanning it in at a high resolution, then scaling it down to the desired=
screen size with antialiasing turned on. If it's just a b&w image, change=
it to 256 colors or more before scaling it; if it's a color image, make=

also use the first method to switch access my POP account between tcp/ip
and dialup.

The simple answer is that there are **far** fewer viruses 'available' for

Has anyone seen an updated copy of Abaton's software, or perphaps a

Sure do know how, and it's *very* easy via Micrsoft Word. (I have version

2. Now go to pulldown menu and select: Tools/Sort. That's it!

>Also, is there any way to adjust the angle at which the image is displayed?

However, the even
_newer_ Mac (due in August, but released in October)
by System x.5, so an Enabler is written for it.

The reason it hasn't been upgraded is because there are no new Mac virus
strains to counter since 3.6. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
O.K?

Have you tried BBEdit Lite (freeware)? It will sort the words and you can
even columnize them (although the words will be separated with tabs; I
would recommend ClarisWorks 4.0 to put them in columns).
BBEdit is written by Bare Bones Software:

IMHO you should do the upgrade in incremental jumps, to get you used to the
freeze ups and crashes you are likely to encounter as you move 'up'. I run
Claris Works 2.1 on 7.5.3, with a 630 and have no problems that I didn't
before the move 'up'.
I am about to stepback a pace to 7.5.1 and stay there until Copland comes
out. I have plenty of time to save for a Power Mac the way OS 8 is being
continually put back.
Hope this TidBit justifies the bandwidth.
