I have a Performa 6214CD with the Apple 15' multiple scan display monitor.
I do some work with color photographs using PhotoShop and other
applications to prepare and review classroom multimedia. I have 40 megs of
RAM installed. What do I need to add the millions of colors that our
classroom machines display so I can get a more realistic preview of what my
media will look like to the students? VRAM? Do I need a new monitor? Any
other suggestions?

Well, which Laserwriter Driver do you have? I'd suggest 8.3.4, then asking
Brother if they have a Printer Description file for your printer.
Alternately, you could create your own (maybe), by opening a similar printers
PDF and editing....maybe Apple has some documentation for developers who need
to write these files (a search of Apple's Tech section might be handy)

Does GDT's driver have your printer? (another stray thought...)

If both your ISPs allocate IP addresses dynamically and your
configuration for both is "using PPP server" (perhaps not the exact
words in English, my Mac speaks Swedish...) you don't need to switch.
Write both name server addresses in the appropriate box and let the
rest be blank.

Caveat: this will only work if both ISP have set up their servers
correctly. Some don't and then it's necessary to provide more details
in the TCP/IP control panel and the same configuration can't be used
for different providers.

Actually, it makes sense to do it the way they do. Now mind you , I am no
big microsfot fan. In fact I despise Microsoft word. Although I do like
Excel and PowerPoint.

The reason it makes sense, is that if they code their own reoutines to
do the graphics and stuff, it makes it much easier to port programs from one
platform to the other. The oly thing you need to change is the routines
that you've code to do the graphics. And those only change for the most part
when you get a major system upgrade. The reason why it is so slow on the MAC
is it's terrible use ovf virtual memory. Seems to me like MSWord accesses\VM
every time you click on something. It's patheetic. Now I'm not stuck with
aa big lag 'cause I got a 604/120, but I still won't use it.

Oh well. My $.02

Making a DOS-format file under System 7.1 was easy: you just started up
Apple File Exchange and converted the file.

Sadly, AFE no longer works under 7.5.3, according to Apple Technical
Support. Curses!

How can I perform this useful transformation for my DOS-based
associates, short of spending a lot of money on DataViz or the like? Is
there a shareware solution? Even gross hacks will be cheerfully
considered if they're reliable.

The latest version of MailConverter (not publicly released yet) will
convert an exported Emailer address-book. There are some limitations
in Emailer's export format, most notably that it only includes
individual nicknames, not groups. And, of course, since the groups
aren't in the exported file, they won't be in the resulting Eudora
nicknames file. But if you can live with that limitation, the
conversion seems to be working pretty well. Contact me if you want to
give it a try.

Internet Config is not working. I'm not sure how long it's been not
working, possibly since 7.5.3 was installed. (I rarely need to actually
open the app). Now, when I do open the app, any window I try to open
(command-1, etc) Gives an error -39. IC stays open, it doesn't crash, but
I can't set anything up within it.

I've reinstalled it several times, to no avail. What am I forgetting?

IPA fonts are a set of special characters, not generally used in
dictionaries (they use their own conventions), so I don't know if these
will satisfy the OED comment.

In Info-Mac there are (at least):

Tech Phonetic -- freeware (based on Goudy, according to the readme).

Phonemic Font Package 1.0.5 -- shareware.

Also, the Linguist list site has a variety of resources and links, so you
can poke around there, especially if you have cross-platform issues in the
future.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

It seems that something on my Mac IIcx runn 7.5.3 and Mode32 did
not like PPPfloater. Becuase now when I get connected the DNS will not
answer. I have deleted the system folder and re-installed MacOS, but this
has not affected the problem. Last time I had this happen I had to
re-format the HD and re-install everything.

I have zapped PRAM. Re-installed the OS, Re-Installed networking.

I know that MacTCP is configured correctly (since I have gotten
ample chance to configure it during all these re-installs).

I have tried Open Transport, it does the same thing. DNS never
answers.

When I try TCPwatcher (with MacTCP on) Ping to the IP number works
(with a few lost packets), TCP works, UDP does not work, and DNS look up
tells me to check the configuration of MacTCP because the nameserver never
answered.

FreePPP v2.5 (and 1.0.5) seem to connect with no problem to the
account and those here running the system tell me I was logged on to the
PPP account...

Any ideas? TIA.

the regular mics (the kinds you can find everywhere, including Radio Shack)

eliminates all kind of problems (echo, feedback from speakers and clarity

Subject: System 7.5.3 peculiarities

Hello everyone,
I am sure I am not the only one frustrated with all these damn!@#$%^&*
System 7.5 upgrades! Is anyone keeping track of them? How many version
of System 7.5.3 are there? I recently installed the System 7.5.3
Revision 2 upgrade. All of a sudden all hell broke loose! Somehow, I
figure, the "Easy" Install for System 7.5 Update 2.0 followed by System
7.5.3 Revision 2 (by-the-way both of which are "recommended" by Mac
guru's for PCI macs-I have a 7200/75) didn't work properly and there was
a lot of redundant/unnecessary/missing extensions etc in my System
folder. Finally, a clean system install starting from the System 7.5.2
CD which came with the computer solved the problem. Now I am down to a
few peculiarities:

1) I have 16MB of actual memory and finally decided to stop using
RamDoubler since it is slowing down my system drastically. Thus, I set
up virtual memory. The problem is that, let's say if I add up 16 MB of
virtual memory to obtain a total of 32 MB, the entire 32MB of memory is
removed from my hard disk storage (as shown on the Finder windows
headers).

2) I installed the Sound Amplification Extension but it doesn't seem to
work. I go into the Sound Control panel and turn the amplification on
but after closing the control panel and returning, I find that the
amplification is still off! Is there a switch in the sound-in jack? I
think that somehow the plug I am using (I have a third party mic) isn't
same as the PlainTalk mic plug (the standard ones were 1/8" wide but the
PlainTalk one is supposed to be 3.5mm wide). Does the Sound control
panel somehow know what kind of a mic is plugged in?

3) Did anyone else experience a slowdown of the PowerMac's when
RamDoubler is on? I have an official copy of a PowerMac "compatible"
RamDoubler, but I think "compatible" in this case just means that it
will work and won't crash and NO guarantees on speed!!!

4) Finally, does anyone know of any simple, small and freeware ftp
server for PowerMacs? I used to use Versaterm FTP server but I didn't
like it since it hasn't been upgraded since stone age and crashes or
freezes up frequently. I am now using NetPresenz but the damn thing is
bulky and takes up too much memory and requires file sharing to be on.
And if virtual memory or RamDoubler is on, then the file open/close
operations are very, very slow. At this point I would even pay some
reasonable fees for a decent ftp server. Help!!!

I use Open Transport 1.1, TCP/IP 1.1 and FreePPP 2.5. I've got three different
ISPs, and I never have to change anything in the TCP/IP configuration --
selecting a different ISP is done in FreePPP Setup.

I have TCP/IP set for "Connect via FreePPP", "Configure Using PPP Server", and
the name server addresses for all my ISPs. Anything else that TCP/IP needs, it
will get from FreePPP and the ISP that you're currently connected to.

Subject: Thanks Mac people

Hello Maccies,

I posted up a plea about 8 days ago asking for URLs to help me locate a set
of replacement System Disks for 7.1, my friend's lot were corrupt and
un-bootable. He was threatening to buy a PC so I had to do something. I
asked for email replies as time was a factor. Well the response was
overwhelming. My phone bill is going to be *big*.

I want to thank all you generous people who took (in some cases a lot of)
time to contact me with URLs and advice, not to mention genuine concern
that Macintosh stood to lose a user. You all know who you are. I would
especially like to thank Bill Stanford for being on the ball, as usual,
with his offer of a set of disk copies which arrived faster than I could
believe. I declined as Bill has done so much for me lately anyway.
Also like to thank Frazer Wright and Peter Kemp for offering to loan a
set. But the biggest cheer must go to Mike Kelly, hi Mike. He not only
emailed me a set of disk copies but reposted three disks worth when it
looked as if my ISP had dropped a few lines over a couple of days, *and*
kept his pager open for the weekend just in case.

It really is heartening to know that such solidarity exists. And the upshot
is my friend has his LC11 running again and is thinking in terms of buying
a bigger newer model. He also sends many thanks. He thought the Internet
was all about pornography bomb manuals. You guys have opened his eyes.

Thanks again,

Ian Burt.

most likely, it *is* their server causing this. however, it's not that the
server is broken; you're misinterpreting the number given.

the number given as the number of new messages in the group is the total
number of messages that have been posted to the group since the last time
you read it. however, unless you're read the group recently or your server
keeps messages for a very long time, older unread articles will have
expired since the last time you read the group. Newswatcher isn't losing

Dear Mac-collegues,

I have tried to load post-script files using Adobe Illustrator 5.0.
However, when I start it up (i.e. I drop the postscript file on the Adobe
Illustrator icon) then it says:

Can't open the illustration. The illustration does'nt start with the
%!PS-Adobe- comment.

OK, so then I edited my postscript file. That is, on the first line I added
%!PS-Adobe-. When I try again, I get the same message together with the
following:

Offending operator '%!PS-Adobe- '.

Anyone know how I should edit the postscript file to make it work ???

Alternatively, are there any good solution to plot ps-files. I have also
tried Mac GS Viewer but it fails most of the time. I've noticed that the
most reliable way to view ps-files is to transfer it to a SUN and the use
ghostview but it's a little bit awkward.
