There are big changes happening at Rice. Why do you care? Well, that is
where most of you get your digest from! It is also where some of you use the

understanding is that the whole thing is going to go away sometime in late July

I have a Performa 6200 with system 7.5.3, and I would like to be able to

Subject: Big Troubles with hard Disk
Hi MacLovers:
I have a client that call in emergency in the weekend because the LC III
she have just prompt a question mark disk, so I took my powerBook make a
bootable diskette with NDD 3.0 and go to her place; so far nothig unusual.
But the nightmare begin when I try to examine the Hard Disk, NDD say that
the Disk was locked and can't do nothing until I unlock the disk, the funny
thing is that there is no a security software in the machine.
Ok, I said; let's do anotner trick, connect my power Book in SCSI Mode to
mount the drive off the LC III in my machine and boot both machines; then
my powerbook said that the disk can not be read and ask if I want to
format. "Uh uh", run NDD in my Power Book and say that can not read the
disk because is lock. So I choose Disk First Aid and tried again in this
case found trouble but it can't repair. I try HD setup and said that can
not find partition so can't install driver....
Ok, so begin to talk with the client to find what happen, she told me
that the day before a friend connect a powerBook like I do, an then check
how they connect and found that the SCSI chain was no terminate when they
use it, that was bad.
When she call, already try to rescue by herself using FWB Hard Disk
Toolkit Crisis Disk, and update the driver.. the version is 1.7 (from the
get info box) I just going to begin searching for update that maybe can
help me, but also want to know if there is another thing a can do (beside
>From reformat the drive). Already tried to rescue the disk but Unerase just
found a little part of the files and like can you guessed there is no
backup, most of the disk contains programs or other thing that can be
reinstall, but there is a group of files that can no be rescue and are
important.
Please, if anybody can give any ideas, there is somebody that will feel
much better.
Thanks in Advance.

Look for a file called SIL-IPA or similar. Exists for Windows-TT

Awhile back, someone posted a message about an extension or control panel
that would allow you to switch to Local talk (to print locally) from
EtherNet with out having to actually disconnect your EtherNet conncetion
in the Network control panel. Anyone remember what that was? I know they
say LaserWriter Bridge will do this at some point, but I'm told it

I do believe the Plus, SE and the original Classic are limited to a
maximum of 4Mb of RAM, unless you add a third-party accelerator card
which can hold additional RAM.
Once upon a time I had an SE with a Mobius card which held 16Mb of RAM.
...and no, you cannot use RamDoubler (it requires a 68030 chip).

SE can only have 4Mb memory.

Subject: Netscape's Magic Cookie (one man's solution) - I know, it's a dead
horse, but...
Well, there has been so much discussion on this I just thought I'd mention
my little solution since it's real simple, and flexible as well.
I am not a 'paranoid', although I am interested in how demographic
marketing data is collected, it's value, and how it is used from a
consumer's perspective.
I just use the finder to lock my MagicCookie file to prevent any changes
>From being written. This works well since you can unlock it at anytime you
wish for a specific site.
For example, at HotWired they use the cookie to remember who you are so
you don't have to log in over and over. I think this is handy, but I'm
still unsure just how much information they can get at and also concerned
about other servers' use of this feature. If only Netscape asked me if it
could set this cookie first....
Anyway, here is what I did:
First, I trashed my cookie file.
I then let Netscape make a new one by
quiting and restarting, taking care not to visit a site that would try to
set a cookie (write some data to the file).
Next I deleted the global history file and deleted my cache.
With the cookie file still unlocked, I visited HotWired (I like Dr. Weil's
Health Clinic!), logged in (already had a user name & pass), and checked
the box in the form to save my username and password. Configure any
options you wish to set in the form also.
Then, without logging out, just close Netscape and use the Finder's Get
Info (command-i) to lock that MagicCookie File!
Now, HotWired remembers who you are, and that's about it. If you want your
email address/ homepage private, you can delete these settings from
netscape before beginning. I let them know that much...
I'm interested in any opinions on the effectiveness of this technique,
other way's to protect information (i.e. can they get the global history
or the cache history with java, javascript, or livescript?)

Well, we do have a connection with Stalker as we are their UK distributors, and
I have to tell you that while PortShare will let Mr Daniel share his modem
amongst his Macs, only one Mac at a time can use the modem. In other words, it
acts like a switch. This may or may not be enough for him. There is a demo
version of Portshare in the info-mac archive (under "comms").
If what he wants is for all his Macs to be accessing the Internet over one
dial-up PPP link, then what he needs is a router. There are there options:
1) Get a standalone router (Cisco, Telebit, Ascend, Compatible Systems etc
etc);
2) Use a Unix box whether Mac-based like MachTen, AU/X or MKLinux) or PC-based
or Sun etc as a router;
3) Use Vicom Internet Gateway (http://www.vicomtech.com) which runs on a Mac.

When I first open my personal newsgroup list, a given group might show,
say, over 1500 new postings.
I have my pref's set to open 750. But when the window opens, there may be
only 250 or so postings shown.
Sometimes, the cutback is even more dramatic: from 180 down to 25 postings.
I'm using YA NewsWatcher to get the benefit of filtering. The author's

not find partition so can't install driver....

Exists for Windows-TT
and Mac-TT. I might have seen it in the info-mac archives, but I am
not sure...

Awhile back, someone posted a message about an extension or control panel
that would allow you to switch to Local talk (to print locally) from
EtherNet with out having to actually disconnect your EtherNet conncetion
in the Network control panel. Anyone remember what that was? I know they
say LaserWriter Bridge will do this at some point, but I'm told it
currently doesn't work properly.

You hopes are reality. 1152 X 870 is the maximum attainable.

You're out of luck!
SE can only have 4Mb memory.
SE/30 may have more slots(?)

First, I trashed my cookie file.
quiting and restarting, taking care not to visit a site that would try to
set a cookie (write some data to the file).

I seem to remember there being more than one version of "Office4.2x Update
for Power Mac", and that replacing one with a later version solved some
problems for us. See what you can find at Microsoft's web site.

1) Get a standalone router (Cisco, Telebit, Ascend, Compatible Systems etc
etc);
2) Use a Unix box whether Mac-based like MachTen, AU/X or MKLinux) or PC-based
or Sun etc as a router;
3) Use Vicom Internet Gateway (http://www.vicomtech.com) which runs on a Mac.

A recent posting inquired about the price of SIMMs to upgrade a mac. The
most economical source I've found is cybertechmall, which posts its prices
on the web (there's an 800 number you can use to order). For example, a
16mb, 70nsec simm for a quadra/centris is quoted at $116 (it was $126 a
week ago, so check the latest prices at
http://www.cybertechmall.com/kpo/index.html). A friend gave me the lead.
He's used their product and he's happy. I have not ordered, yet, but soon
will.

Subject: YA NewsWatcher
Does this program automatically truncate file listings?
When I first open my personal newsgroup list, a given group might show,
say, over 1500 new postings.
I have my pref's set to open 750. But when the window opens, there may be
only 250 or so postings shown.
Sometimes, the cutback is even more dramatic: from 180 down to 25 postings.
I'm using YA NewsWatcher to get the benefit of filtering. The author's
discussion of same is not thoroughly clear -- at least, to me. Am I
possibly doing something wrong? BTW, I did check with my ISP to see if
their news server might the cause; they said no, it had to be my software.
TIA.
