Subject: [*] Astronomy Startups (Venus II Startup)

These are StartupScreens for any high-res Macintosh.

All three Startups are 832x624 and look best with thousands of colors.
----
Venus II is a 16 bit image of the surface of Venus from the surface,
recreated with radar data taken from the Magellan spacecraft. This is
almost the same as the 640x480 Venus Startup already here at Info-Mac,
excepted optimized from a 832x624 display.

Eclipse I is a 256 grayscale image of an total eclipse of the Sun. I
took the center 832x624 pixels of the original 2000x1345 pixel NASA image
hao_WLCC_941103.jpg.

Eclipse II is the entire hao_WLCC_941103.jpg image with the height
reduced to 624 pixels, and the remainder reduced proportionally.

I created these three startups on my PowerMac 7200. Further details are
in the ReadMe. They are free.

Subject: [*] Christmas Time 2.0.4

I hope the young at heart will enjoy themselves here.

Trim the tree, find matches at Santa's Workshop, Unscramble words,
hear Christmas music, Peek at the Presents, Visit the Nativity.

This program is funware. Have fun, share it, and have a great holiday.
This is the 2nd major revision of Christmastime, with 2 new activities
and 20 songs.

Versions 2.01 thru 2.04 had minor bug fixes. This program will run from
CD, but the Preferences won't work, and screens will revert to their
original state when you go to another screen.

I have plans for many other fun children's programs. If you enjoy this
program, please send me email or a postcard, or $5 (which will
certainly encourage me to continue with my projects).

[email protected]
http://www.sylvan.com/
(come visit my web page for lots of other children's shareware)

System Requirements
This program will run on any 256 color mac running System 6.04 or
higher. This program is also graphic packed, with over 400 graphic
elements. SuperCard does it's best, but QuickDraw can be sluggish on
the older macs. It runs well on my Performa 550.

Subject: [*] Fannie Lou Hamer SimpleCard stack

This freeware SimpleCard stack tells about the life of civil rights
activist Fannie Lou Hamer. The stack was written and created by an adult
literacy learner, Stephon Gray, at the Computer Assisted Literacy Center of
DC, a free-to-use computer learning lab at the central public library in
Washington DC.

One of the reasons for creating this stack was to show the kinds of things
that can be made using SimpleCard, a real neat shareware multimedia
construction program for the Mac. This stacks requires that you have
SimpleCard on your hard drive. SimpleCard is a short download from many
places, including Info-Mac.

Hope this proves useful to others.

Cheers,

Phil Shapiro

Note: This stack requires a color or grayscale monitor, 4 megabytes of
memory, System 7, and SimpleCard. (It might be possible to view the stack
using a PowerBook without greyscale capability, but you'd miss seeing the
color photograph on the first card of the stack.)

If anyone happens to know of an IBM shareware (or freeware) program that
performs the same function as SimpleCard, I'd be real interested in hearing
about it.

Subject: [*] Media Tracks 1.0a music collection database

Media Tracks 1.0 is a killer music collection database written in FileMaker
Pro 2.1.x (FMP 3.0.x version coming), and it really pushes the envelope for
quality FileMaker design: attractive and functional.

It's an interlocking suite of 10 databases for novice to advanced users to
catalog every aspect of a personal music library: albums, songs, lyrics,
artists, etc. It also includes a cassette label maker that really works!

This version features an extensive help system, and sample Beatles data,
portions of which are excerpted from the All-Music Guide with permission of
Matrix Software. A Shareware fee of $20 U.S. ($30 Canadian) is requested to
receive a password to unlock the database for personal use. Registered
users are free to make suggestions, the best of which are certain to find
their way into Media Tracks Pro. They will also receive a free upgrade to
the subsequent relational version.

The database has been extensively tested on Macintosh, and uses Adobe's
free screen fonts for Helvetica, Times and Zapf Dingbats. It should work
fine on Windows machines that translate these fonts into Windows versions
or equivalents, for those who can also convert .SIT files. If there is
enough interest, I will upload .ZIP files with Arial, New Times Roman and
Wingdings fonts already embedded.

The versions with sample Beatles data from my own collection, are partially
excerpted from the All Music Guide, with permission of the copyright
holder, Matrix Software.

Other features include a cassette label maker that really works; a database
for lyrics; another for individual album tracks or singles with musician
and recording credits, cover information, etc.; album covers and other
featured artwork; accommodates compilation recordings; artist information,
band members, biographies; distributor and label databases, and much more.

You may distribute this database (and the other two, smaller variations which
I'll upload later) in any form, as long as the package remains intact.

Thank you for your consideration,

Mike

Subject: [*] MIDIGraphy Version 1.2.3

Folks,
Attached is the latest version of MIDIGraphy, the superb shareware
midi sequencer for the Macintosh system by TONTATA of Japan. Please
replace the existing archived version with this new version 1.2.3.
MIDIgraphy is now shareware, $20, and information about registering via
Kagi is included in the package.

One of the traditions of the midi music industry is that a
sequencer represents a composing and arranging tool primarily. Often a
sequencer is not the most convenient tool for playing back midi music
files. Please try AMP by Arnaud Masson or Midi Jukebox by Randy Wilson for
extra playback features of individual midi files and of song lists.

You may also find additional midi related programs at Charles
Kelly's MMUIG html page on the Internet.

http://www.aitech.ac.jp/~ckelly/mmuig.html
is the address. Mr. Kelly provides a timely and thorough set of links to
programs, information sources, and related midi topics as well as links to
other major sites containing Mac related midi topics and information.

With the imminent release of Quicktime 2.5, the Mac midi world will
experience some major changes. Quicktime 2.5 contains the OMS midi
operating system from Opcode and offers the potential for considerably more
sophistication than was available with previous tools - and it imposes a
large coding obligation on those who wish to update their applications to
the current state of the art under MacOS. You may wish to visit Apple's
Quicktime web site for further details

Scripts you're in the process of editing must be saved regularly with
.

Other changes you're making may not be saved until you leave the card,
choose a new tool, make a menu selection, or some way invoke the
auto-saver.

So every so often while painting, setting up a button, entering a lot of
text in a field, etc., go to another card and back
(right-arrow,left-arrow), forcing a save.

Power Replace 5.0 (by Guoniu Han) can do what I understand your request
to be. Here's a blurb from the readme:

"What is it? PowerReplace is a powerful text conversion utility using
the Drag/Drop technology. It can replace character (including NULL, CR,
LF, TAB) and string by any other string. By use of the asterisk-sign(*)
representing any indeterminate string, it can replace also a string only
whose two extremities are known. It supports all character set,
hexadecimal string and Unix regular expression(pattern) for
Find/Replace."

The Info-Mac version is 68K version though.

In general, if you wish to learn how to do some effect that you don't
know, and you don't have the time or money to get the right book, then
I recommend finding a page on the Web that has the effect you want,
and then doing a "View by Source" (or equivalent command on non-Netscape

You can use "Un-Zip 5.1.2", available at your local friendly sumex archive
mirror as /cmp/un-zip-512.hqx.
This seems to be a completely different product than Peter Maika's
"Unzip 2.0.1", which I prefer to use, and is also freeware. However, a
quick scan
did not find that product at either sumex or umich. (Should I resubmit it??)

This should work:

Thanks to everyone who responded. I didn't keep a count, but the responses

Hello Anthony,

by the way, MacX is a X Windows *server* not a client: The X Windows System is
running on your Mac and serving for the X requests that your UNIX client
applications submit to your Mac display over the network.

The currently shipping MacX 1.5 is a fat version (for 68k and PPC).
The speed on my PowerMac 7100/80 is quite ok but nothing surpassing.
The memory requirement is enormous (the minimum configuration is 5 MByte).
But despite of this it does it's job very well and stable.
See also http://product.info.apple.com/productin ... /macx.html

Do you mean *TeX*-dvi previewing? This only genuine text-processing system?
That overruns WordPerfect, FrameMaker and even M$ Word 6.0.1? But to be
serious:
If you are TeX setting your documents and have a Mac also, you should use
Tom Kiffe's CMacTeX: http://www.math.tamu.edu/~tkiffe/cmactex.html
I used it for all my scientific documents and I'll never be TeXing on UNIX
any more.

Happy Macing, Oliver.

I use Exodus to access my e-mail through our Unix network

Sandor, and others of you may also pay attention, the file AppleShare PDS
is ripe for corruption. It is an invisible file on your HD. Flushing that
puppy cures a lot of ills. Including slow startup.

The fix? Hie thee to a utility that sees invisible files. I use CPS's old
FileEdit for the task. No, it is not in the new CPS MacTools. But it still
works, so I keep it. I tell FileEdit to delete AppleShare PDS. All is after
that as wonderful as I can expect.

Yes, Appleshare PDS rebuilds itself automagically after being flushed.

Microsoft has an update (6.01) for Word (check www.microsoft.com), and it
does make a big difference for most Mac users. But with the update, it
is _still_ slower than previous versions -- most of my clients have
switched back to Word 5.1, or even switched over to WordPerfect or
ClarisWorks.

The bad news is that most of the code in 6.0 was written on the Windows
platform and then 'ported over' (translated) to the Mac -- instead of
being written from scratch on the Macintosh like version 5.1 was. The
good news is that the _next_ version of Word (7.0?) is being re-done from
square one on the Mac, and will supposedly fly compared to what 6.0 is
like (this is from an old high school friend of mine who is working on
that project now for Microsoft). /Dan Oblak [I use no MS products except

Netscape leaves this in the hands of the page designer--if he uses height

designer wants you to see an image first, the control is there. Starting
with Netscape 2, background images load last regardless.

My spouse was getting similar jollies trying to use PPP with OT1.0.6 on
her proud new 7200 running 7.5.2. Problems negotiating with the ISP, and
thrice-daily System trashings requiring initialization and reinstall.
Whoopee. Are we having fun yet?

Two days of calls to SOS-Apple (with up to 40 minute waits on hold) left
her anointed with the advice to upgrade her brand-new Power Mac to 7.5.3
($13 and more waiting just to do a little byte-swapping) and to acquire
new software from the ISP.

I noted that discourse with the same ISP was working hunky on my mere
lowly pokey old 7.1 IIsi. I then, by the scruff of the neck, openly
transported TCP/IP and the OT libraries into Extensions (disabled),
along with their little scripting friends. There they still lie moping.
I then installed MacTCP 2.0.6 and FreePPP 1.0.5. Two busy weeks later,
everything's still just fine.

Oh, oh, oh!! ;-)

Reading your PB 5300 manual or "Macintosh Guide" could have spared you for
the trouble you write about!!!

Using a normal "PowerBook SCSI system cable" (29-pin) can lead to damage!!
on your PowerBook on Desktop-Mac!!
You must use that cable only for connecting peripherals like scanner or
external-disk-systems directly to your PB.

I use my PowerBook 190 in SCSI-disk-mode for my MacSupport-work every day
and it works perfectly.

You have to buy the special (30 pin) adapter, named "PowerBook SCSI Disk
Adapter", M2539_/A, from Apple. It's in the same dark grey as the PowerBook
and about 25 cms long.
(Don't try to find possibly cheaper "copy's" from other company's, just buy
Apple's!)

I advise you to first carefully follow the information about the
SCSI-addresses, your PowerBook-address default is 2.
In the controlpanel "PowerBook Configuration" you can change the address if
you need to.
And take care that PassWord protection is OFF!

Then carefully read the section about termination, especcially in this case!
If you have other SCSI-peripherals connected to your desktop-Mac, maybe you
have to try out different cabling/termination-settings.

FIRST TURN EVERYTHING OFF, then connect the SCSI-adapter following the
instructions in your manual, then turn on other SCSI-peripherals, then turn
on your PowerBook and at last your desktop-Mac.
On the screen of your PowerBook you have to see a moving SCSI-icon with the
address number in it. When you see this icon everything is ok, if not, shut
down the PowerBook to prevent for damage and try out other termination or
cabling or address-numbering.

If everything is well the PB-harddisk-icon will appear on your BigMac's
screen.

Succes!

Although I am no GREP expert. I somehow managed to put this technique
together about a week ago when I faced the same problem.

1. Open a COPY of your Netscape Bookmarks file with BBEdit.

2. Search menu > Find and in the dialog that follows select:

"GREP" and "Start at Top"

3. Enter

ADD_DATE(.*)"
|
Note space here

as the EXACT search sting

4. Do not enter anything as the replace string. If you are
brave you can REPLACE ALL or just FIND and REPLACE as you go.

I sure would like to learn more about GREP techniques if anyone out
there knows a good source of material on the subject.

Subject: SCSI Voodoo (verbose)

The following is not intended to confuse the issues of SCSI cabling and
termination, but to show that conventional SCSI logic falls apart under some
conditions.

I run a FirstClass BBS on an old Mac II with an '030-33 accelerator. It has
one internal SCSI device that is terminated. It also has four external hard
drives.

Several months ago, I was finding references to SCSI errors in the system
logs, and was having difficulties getting a good Retrospect backup of 1.9 GB
of data.

I tried different combinations of cables, SCSI ID's, active and passive
termination, and varying the device order with no success. Then, my partner
in the BBS suggested getting an Apple active terminator (about $50 US) and
putting it in the middle of the SCSI chain. This seems to have solved the
problem, and there have been no SCSI errors since that time.

Now, I have four external hard drives, with an Apple active terminator on the
second drive, and the APS built-in active termination on the last device. I
get no SCSI errors, and I can now get a good backup.

A friend has recently had very similar problems on his FirstClass BBS, and
when he told a tech at the local Apple dealer about using a mid-chain
terminator, the tech said it would cause errors and should not be done.

I've had success with multiple terminators in the past, and although I don't
automatically recommend it as a solution to SCSI problems, it should be
considered when all else seems to be failing. Note that poor quality cables
are the source of most SCSI errors.

The tech also said that he should use the higher SCSI ID numbers, since they
get a higher priority from the CPU. I've found that ID's 0-4 worked best for
me, and it has been demonstrated that some recent Macs/System versions have
had trouble with SCSI ID #5.

So much for conventional SCSI wisdom.

The moral of the story is that SCSI can become a black art when there are
many devices involved, or when the few devices are odd or uncommon items such
as SCSI Ethernet, SCSI serial port expansion, SCSI scanners, Zip drives, and
others.

1) Use only high-quality SCSI cables

2) It pays to experiment before declaring SCSI hardware defective.

Not only are these programs incredibly slow on any Mac, they are
