ART Music is a translator that converts Finale EPS files to Illustrator
format, so you can edit a page of music just like a graphic (add color,
other graphics, move notes, etc.). ART Music is FAT; it runs on 680x0
computers and runs native on Power Macintoshes.

This bug fix corrects a problem that causing inconsistent crashing on 68000
computers on startup. Sorry, folks, but honestly, it wasn't my fault.

width of your screen shows you as much of each entry as will fit. Click on
the entry or type its identifying letter to place the text in your
document.

New in this version: documents how to assign keystrokes directly to

really of use to application developers. It's purpose is to write an

writing a bunch of obnoxious code to do the same thing. I've included
sample code showing how to use this saved object from C.

Subject: [*] MacUpdate 3.5 - File Synchronization

MacUpdate is a file synchronization utility. It can do forward and
reverse file synchronizations, and can do synchronized deletion of
files. Works with floppies, hard disks, removables, any AppleTalk
network (including EtherNet, Netware, Windows NT, and ARA), and
pretty much any "disk" that can be mounted on the Mac's desktop.
Works fine with system 6 or 7, from Mac Plus to the latest PCI Macs.
Includes tools to automate the synchronization process, including
scheduling timers, and many options for what and how to synchronize.
Also works great as a simple backup or mirroring program. Speeds up
backups by only backing up the files that have been changed. Lets you
work with your Mac while a backup/synchronization/update is going on.
Good documentation is included, and the program is very easy to use.
Shareware: $5

I give permission for my program to be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

You need 2 things, other than AppleScript, to be able to use this script:

containing a free CD-ROM with Internet Explorer 2.0, Internet Assistant 2.0
for Word, Internet Assistant for Excel, and the Microsoft Word 6.0.1a.
Included is an offer for 8 megs of RAM for $69 from Kingston. I need more
RAM, and this seems like a good deal; my local college store says the
price of RAM is plunging and it should be quite reasonable by September,
but I have trouble imagining it going this low. Anybody got an expert
opinion on this deal?

By the way, I hate to admit it, but MacUser was right in saying Explorer is
more efficient to use than Netscape, almost solely because it loads text
before graphics. I assume the Netscape folks have taken note and will fix
this in their next release.

If what you want to do is have your image repeat throughout the background
of your page, then all you need to do is .... nothing. Use the HTML tag:

If the image is smaller than the size of the window (or frame), the web
browser is smart enough to repeat the image enough times to fill it.

Subject: [A] problems with GV Teleport Platinum on 8500/120

In a recent Info-Mac Digest, I wrote of having lately tested "various
models of Hayes, Supra, Boca, USRobotics, Motorola and, most recently,
tried out two variations of Dayna PC-card modems for the PowerBook. (My
only GV experience was with a bundled 14.4kbps model, and that didn't work
out too well.)"

I went on to say "that for maximum compatibility and best speeds over any
given telephone line, the USR Courier 'V.Everything' [seems to be] way
ahead of the pack (but also [is] the most expensive)."

Over the past few days, however, we have confirmed one glaring exception
to this statement: In the wee hours of the morning of July 4, a line of
Level 5 thunderstorms passed overhead, accompanied by severe
cloud-to-ground lightning. At the time, all modems were physically
disconnected from the telephone and electric lines, as hard experience has
taught that in our rural area, even good surge suppression is not always
effective against lightning.

However, there did occur some kind of damage to the local Telco's
equipment or lines, as evidenced by a constant, loud, obnoxious hum on our
telephone line. We immediately reported it to the Telco, and although
they acknowledged the problem and said that it would be fixed "right
away," after four days it still is present.

So to get to the point: With this background hum on the telephone line,
neither the USR V.Everything nor the two models of Dayna will even
*connect* at all to two different modem banks. If these were the only
(three!) modems we had, we would be "dead in the water" for no telling how
many more days.

On the other hand, the Supra V.32bis *will* connect, though usually after
negotiating down to 9600 bps, and with a fair number of RE, TE and RT
alerts on its LED display. This is a bit slow for Netscape, but quite
usable for e-mail. Bully for the Supra.

One other point: One respondent to my original posting suggested that the
observed differences between modem models may have been due to not having
installed one or more of OT 1.1, System 7.5.3 Rev. 2, FreePPP, current
modem driver files and the like. All of these *are* in fact present, and
the reported differences in modem performance have been confirmed over
some six different models of Mac - all of them running current software.

I strongly believe that there are important hardware/firmware/software
differences between modem models themselves - and none of them are very
close to perfect. While exhaustive fiddling with various modem
initialization strings *might* make a difference with our "hum" problem,
what is the point in doing so when the Supra just cranks up and *works*?

Mark E. Ingram

Subject: AppleShare error at Startup

Hello all.

I've been experience a little problem the past few weeks; one that I cannot
attribute to any changes in my system configuration. What happens is that
when I turn on my computer the extensions begin to load, and then when the
icon for the AppleShare extention appears (I use Conflict Catcher to see
all startup items), an error dialog box pops up that says something to the
effect of, "An AppleShare error has occured. Please activate AppleTalk in
the Chooser." I click OK, and startup continues as usual, with no problems
in operation.

Now I know I've been able to startup with AppleTalk off in the past without
getting that message. And I don't have any problems turning AppleTalk on
and off after the startup process is complete. I'm using a PB Duo 230
8/500, with System 7.5.3r2, and I have experienced this problem when I've
had the Assistant Toolbox extension loaded and disabled.

Any clues?

Probably because I use too many extensions, my Macintosh crasher

However, Hypercard has no save command. Hypercard is supposed to

Question: Is there a way to ensure that Hypercard does save

I downloaded the BBEdit 4.0.1 update and am really impressed with its

old keystrokes don't work, take a look at the menus.

I don't understand why Bare Bones sends out a free t-shirt (X-Large only)

Anyway, it's a wonderful tool. I worked with the free version for two years

Subject: Help: I need an overseas Apple Service Provider!

Greetings. I'm in the USA, and I need a very small part that I can't
buy here: a latch for my Duo 210.

Here's the story: I bought my 210 with a broken latch. Upon inquiry,
I discovered that Apple *refused* to sell the part to my service
provider (and of course they wouldn't sell it to me directly). They
insist that I mail the Powerbook to them and pay them $160 to fix it,
which is patently absurd (it's a $5 part and a 15-minute job, honest;
I've been in there to get to broken one out).

Apple *will* however sell the part to their overseas service providers, on
the grounds that absolutely nobody in their right minds would send their
Duo to the US from overseas for this. So if you are an overseas Apple
Service Provider, or have a friendly one, and can order the part and send
it to me, I'll pay what it costs or trade something in kind, and be very,
very grateful.

Incidentally, nobody at Apple has had so much as a vaguely reasonable
excuse for this strange policy, though they have made up some pretty
interesting ones- "it has to be done in a cleanroom" is my favorite, or
how about "some service providers might not want to do it". I suspect
that it's because Apple makes a lot of money on this trivial (and probably
common) repair. I'd love to find out who makes these for Apple and buy a
large number at 50 cents each to give away.

I must say that as a confirmed Macintosh evangelist, freak and fan,
the attitude I've found at Apple recently has been very disheartening;
a bunch of folks at Customer Relations who had no idea what they were
doing went out of their way to defend an absurd policy with absurd
reasoning. They sounded scared.

I know this one has probably been asked before, but I don't seem to recall

I have an HP DeskWriter 560c that I want to share on our ethernet LAN. I have
tried the following:

1. Laserwriter Bridge. No luck. Only works with Apple printers, to the

2. Dayna EtherPrint LocalTalk to Ethernet adapter. No luck. DeskWriter
drivers didn't recognize the printer on Ethernet.

Does anyone know of a way that I can share this printer? The main reason I
want to do this is that I want to print from my 8100, but both serial ports
are filled with a Geoport adapter and a ColorQuickCam. I suppose I could get
one of those serial port switching devices, but I would rather have a more

There has been a lot of discussion about connecting a PowerBook to a
desktop Mac and having the PB disk mount and accessible to its desktop bro.
What no one has explained is exactly how to do this. I have a SCSI cable
to attach my 5300 to a SCSI chain. Is this sufficient for connecting to my
IIsi or do you need a docking adaptor. Once the hardware is hooked up,
what is the boot procedure, i.e. what gets turned on in what order?

Hooking a PB up in this manner can be critical given that you can't boot
System 7.5 from a single floppy. My PowerBook disk crashed last week and
luckily I had a spare system on a Bernoulli disk. Booting holding down
DOCS skipped the damaged disk and MacTools took care of the rest. However,
a direct connect to my IIsi would have been more convenient.

that problem. She can send and receive mail (and of course, log on), but
she is only able to download the default homepage (ISP's homepage), and if
she requests another site, it gives the "unable to make a network
connection" error. She has run into this problem on two other ISP's in
town. Can anyone shed any light on this particular characteristic of
Powerbooks, Netscape, and the 'net? She has tried this using a variety of
early Netscape versions -- all shareware.

There are a number of all-in-one beasts of the type mentioned above for
Wintels, but so far I have yet to see any for the Mac. Am I wrong? Or are
there any adapters like PowerPrint that will allow me to use PC-baed
machines on a
Mac ? PowerPrint documentation says that it can drive these machines as
printers, but it can't access the other functions.

Subject: Problem: Now Utilities and PB 5300

I'm experiencing some problems with Now Utilities 5.0.1 on a Powerbook
5300cs 16/500 running system software 7.5.2 and Ram Doubler 1.6.2 (I've
also experienced the same problems with system software 7.5.3 plus revision
2). The problem is this: every now and then hierarchical menus fail to
appear: instead a greyed-out 'Empty' appears where the menus ought to
begin. Now Super Boomerang occasionally suffers from a similar problem: the
list of recent files and applications is often truncated, garbled or just
plain missing. I've switched off the Apple Menu Options control panel, but
this hasn't helped.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Will upgrading to version 6
of NU solve help?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Removing sections of Netscape bookmark file (Q)

Dear Digest readers,
Anybody make a program that strips the ADD_DATE*LAST_VISIT
sections out of the HTML text of Netscape bookmark files?
I have a list of over 1000 URLs with this format that I'd like to strip
out just that section of the URL.

If somebody knows how to do this with BBEdit Lite 3.5.1,
or some other program available on the Net, please e-mail me. The
solution should work on System 7.5.3 rev 2 PowerMac 7200.

Thank you.

Subject: Replacement for "Directory Assistance II"?

On Sun, 30 Jun 1996 14:48:49 -0700, David Emery asked:

>>
Long ago (in a galaxy far away :-) I got the "Directory Assistance II"
extension with Norton Utilities. This rapidly became my 'favorite'
extension, with the substantial flexibility it provides in opening files.
(It replaces the standard "file open" dialog with an expanded dialong that
provides direct access to all disk volumes, a list of most recently visited
directories, and "my favorite directories". It also allows me to create a
directory or delete a file from within the "Open File" dialog.)

Now I understand that "Directory Assistance II" is A Bad Thing, that
it is not supported, and that it has been linked to lots of crashes,
particularly with System 7.5.3.

Can anyone recommend a good replacement?
>>

Same happened to me with SuperBoomerang when it got rolled into Now Utilities
(and just *where* is my upgrade notice, I ask??).
I'm now using Default Folder 2.6.1, which although not quite as feature rich
as Boomer, exacts way less toll on my system resources and provides the
following features:

(From the ReadMe)
* Set up a default folder for any or all applications.
* Switch among recently used folders from a pop-up menu.
* See available disk space and switch between disks from a pop-up menu.
* Click on a Finder window to show it in an Open or Save dialog.
* Create folders, get information (including changing name, type, and
creator), and move items to the Trash from within file dialogs.
* "Rebound" back to the last file you used.
* Make "Replace" the default option instead of "Cancel" when saving
a file with the same name as an existing file.
* Speed up the display of Open and Save dialogs by turning off custom
color icons in the file list.

Default Folder will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher, and
is accelerated for PowerPC.

A Mac SE can run system 7, so there is no problem here. And the 4 mB
RAM should be sufficient to use Eudora and the related stuff (PPP, etc).
On my PPC-Mac, Eudora needs less than 500 KB RAM. You probably won't be
happy when you try to "surf on the web", since Netscape won't run on the
SE (it requires at least an 68020 processor; think the SE has an 68000
only).

Best wishes, Christian.

Subject: sharing modem/ppp service?

I've got 4 macs at home connected over
appleshare and one high speed modem which we've been moving
between the computers, what I'm wondering is
if there is a way to have them share the
modem with one machine acting as a server,
or for the machine recieving PPP signals
to retransmit it to the other machines?
I would be willing to use commercial software
if noone knows of any appropriate shareware

No way. SimpleText relies on something called TexEdit, which is built
into the Mac system or ROM (probably in ROM), and this can not open larger
text files. Hacking around in SimpleText would not help.

Subject: Sun HD as external Mac drive - Please Help

Hello Netters,

i have connected an old drive of our Sun workstations to my Mac to have a
drive to install MkLinux on. I have the following problems in formatting
the file:

With the MkLinux CD there comes the formatter program Apple HD/SC Setup,
version 7.3.5 which complains

"unable to locate a suitable drive connected to the SCSI port"

It simply does not seem to see the connected HD. I then switched over to my old
Apple HD SC Setup 3.0.1 (A/UX) which is already a rather old version. With
this SW I was able to initialize and partition the drive. Then I started
the Linux installer, it copied all the stuff from CD to the HD but then
when starting the Mac in Linux mode it hangs and nothing happens of the
disk. It seems as if the Mac too does not see the disk in Linux boot mode.

Any ideas? Thanks for support
