Subject: [*] Catalogue 2.0.2J - Japanese version
This is the Japanese version of Catalogue 2.0.2.
What is it ?
Catalogue is a program allowing you to track all the removable supports
that can be mounted on the Mac. I have written this program because I have
not found one that was easy to use.
Interesting Features
* When you introduce a volume in a driver, you can decide what the program
does:
- If the Ctrl key is sunk, you can rename the volume before saving (very
useful with pre-formatted volumes).
- If the Option key is sunk, the volume is ejected after saving.
- If the Command key is sunk, Catalogue does nothing.
* If a volume is already mounted when the program starts, you don't have to
go to the Finder to eject it. You can do that from the program.
* The 'Open a catalog' command allows you to select a directory. The
program then looks in the directory and shows the recognized files. This
allows you to have many directories, one for each kind of volume, and to
open them easily.
* The search command has a lot of criteria allowing you to find easily a
file.
* There is a print command that allows you to print the list of saved
volumes and the result of a search, completly or partly.
* You can launch an application or open a document directly from
Catalogue. For that, just double-click on the element with the command key
sunk (the Scriptable Finder has to be installed).
I have tried to make a simple interface, allowing to know in a quick look where
you are. For more informations, look at the Help in the Apple menu.
Version 2.0.2 :
* Fix a bug that caused a type 4 error when cataloging some shared volumes.

Creepin Critter Math 4.0 is an educational math game that helps children learn
basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division, in a fun & entertaining environment. Children can POP the bubbles or
SQUASH the bugs to arrive at the correct answer to the math problem. There are
different levels so this is a great program for the young ones. This version is
in color.

Subject: [*] Escape Velocity 1.0.2 Installer
Keywords: AMBROSIA ARCADE RPG ACTION ESCAPE VELOCITY ANDREW WELCH SPACE
Check your calendar: It's 2246, and the galaxy just isn't what it used to
be. Spacefaring pirates roam free, civil war rages, and simple traders
cheat death to make a living. Welcome to life in the 23rd century!
Ambrosia Software's Escape Velocity puts you smack-dab in the middle of
that booming galaxy. As the captain of a shiny new spacecraft, you make
your fortune and build your empire. If that sounds like a walk in the
park, you're in for a surprise - dangers abound! Your lowly shuttle
craft will need more than a little luck to make a profit... and survive.
Lovingly hand-crafted by programmer Matt Burch, Escape Velocity offers a
rich and open-ended environment that evolves as you play. Over a hundred
worlds occupy the galaxy, each with its own technology, alliances, and
commodities. As you earn credits and gain fame, Confederation peace
keepers and Rebel patriots struggle for power, leaving you in the middle.
Escape Velocity spans a number of genres, combining elements of classic
"trading" games, arcade space shoot-outs, and strategy simulations.
Whether you choose to build a trading empire, aid the Rebellion in a
civil war, or strike out on your own as a ruthless pirate, Escape
Velocity provides a multitude of options for the game connoisseur. This
open-ended gameplay allows each player to chart their own course as they
play; there's no "right" way to play Escape Velocity, as long as you have
fun!
Numerous sub-plots fill Escape Velocity's world; your choices affect the
story's development, guaranteeing that each game will be different from
the last. You'll have the opportunity to infiltrate hostile military
bases, ferry emergency supplies to distant star systems, rescue
passengers from stranded cruise ships, stop alien invaders, and more. In
addition, Escape Velocity sports an open game engine. Future scenario
designers will be able to create their own worlds for other players to
explore...
Escape Velocity runs on any Mac with a 640x480 color monitor and 5.8
megabytes of free RAM. Optimized for the PowerMac, it's lickety-split
smooth on Apple's latest iron. And of course, Escape Velocity has the
dazzling 3D rendered graphics, full stereo sound, and all the polish that
you'd expect of an Ambrosia game.
Price: $20.00
Requires: 256 Color Screen, 13" or Greater; 040 or PowerPC recommended

Subject: [*] FindText 1.3.2
FindText can search the files on your harddisk for that specific text you
know is hiding somewhere. Simply type in the text, tell it what folder or
disk to search, and it will find all files conatining that text. You can
even specify where it has to look in the file: the data fork, the resource
fork or both. This saves you having to open ten or more files to get hold
of the one you're after, and FindText can work in the background, which
means you can get on with something else rather than watching the progress
bar crawl across the screen.
FindText needs System 7 and runs native both on the PowerMac and the
68020/68030/68040 Macs.
Version 1.3.2 fixes a bug in the file-filter.

Subject: [*] MacUpdate 3.5 - File Synchronization
MacUpdate is a file synchronization utility. It can do forward and
reverse file synchronizations, and can do synchronized deletion of
files. Works with floppies, hard disks, removables, any AppleTalk
network (including EtherNet, Netware, Windows NT, and ARA), and
pretty much any "disk" that can be mounted on the Mac's desktop.
Works fine with system 6 or 7, from Mac Plus to the latest PCI Macs.
Includes tools to automate the synchronization process, including
scheduling timers, and many options for what and how to synchronize.
Also works great as a simple backup or mirroring program. Speeds up
backups by only backing up the files that have been changed. Lets you
work with your Mac while a backup/synchronization/update is going on.
Good documentation is included, and the program is very easy to use.

Subject: [*] Pitchers Stats FM 2.0
If you read the back pages of Baseball Weekly you probably know that many
people will charge you lots of money to maintain your baseball draft. I
get really annoyed at this since you can do it yourself with just a
little bit of effort. So I made this Filemaker database for my own use,
but I figured other people might also find it useful (I searched the net
for a long time for something like this without luck).
In the same spirit I put no passwords in the database and have restricted
your access in no way whatsoever. This I have done for two reasons:
password protected databases really are annoying and your draft rules
will be a little different than ours so you will likely have to customise
a bit.
The other reason I am making this available is that, for some reason,
those IBM compatible people seem to think that baseball is their
exclusive domain. Since there is nothing they can do that Apple cannot
do better, I bring this database forward in the effort to break the IBM
compatible baseball monopoly.
Once everything is set up, the process of tracking a draft is quite
simple. Get the stats from the internet (bookmark provided) and open one
file....and that is it! Filemaker does the rest. You are then free to
browse the information in various different formats.

I have numerous times gone Persuasion 2.1 -> Mac PowerPoint 4.0 -> Windows
PowerPoint (either Windows 3.1 or '95--I've used both) as follows:
Import into Mac PowerPoint. Save to PC formatted diskette (rename to 8.3
name using .ppt as the extension). Open with Windows. You will get a
message basically saying this is Mac PowerPoint presentation and you will
only be able to read it. Cool. Just save it in Windows, renaming or

You might want to try TitlePop (freeware by Jouko Pakkanen of
Finland...v2.4.2 is latest version I know of) as well as the other
utilities mentioned. TitlePop puts a pop-up menu on the title bar of the
active window in the foreground application. From this menu, not only can
you go to other open applications (including the Finder), but you can
select specific windows in those other open apps to bring forward.
It works with WindowShade (or Aaron, if you use that) and with "Hide
Finder"/"hide others" activated. This seems to go the Windoze9-to-5 bar
one better, since it lets you see everything possible to open at once.
I got my copy from ZiffNet Mac on Compu$erve. It's not a Ziff utility, so
it may be available elsewhere (or at least at MacUser Web
).

Data Recovery Software
By [email protected]
Most Mac users are familiar with the process of pulling files out of an
emptied Trash using UnErase Norton Utilitie's UnErase or MacTools
Rescue. There are times, however, when it takes a "special" kind of
software to save the day. For example, your Mac crashes, and upon
restart you notice a "Rescued Items" folder sitting in the Trash, but when
you drag the document to the desktop and try to open it, all you get is an
application not found, error message, ASCII hieroglyphics or a blank page
staring you in the face.
About a month ago, I received a phone call from one of my clients who said
that her daughter had just lost an important homework assignment.
After spending most of her Spring break researching and typing this
major project she was able to created a disaster using only 2 keystrokes.
Up until this moment she had ALWAYS made backup copies of previous
assignments, but this one very important document was the
exception...and "Murphy" was waiting.
Just before printing the first (and ONLY) draft of her 28 page report on
Chumash Indian Mythology, she decided to change the font in the entire
document from Geneva to Palatino. She hit the "command" + "A" to
select-all. . Her next command was suppose to be a "Save" (command-S)
but without realizing it, she hit "command -X" (the CUT command)...and
then, apparently thinking she was saving the document again, she hit
"command-S". The net result was a saved 28 page BLANK document
which apparently produced a sudden feeling of nausea and, according to
the mother, some rather loud late-night verbal pyrotechnics.
The next morning, I visited the scene of the accident and realized that
there was only one program that would have any chance of recovering
this file. CanOpener by Abbott Systems (1-800-552-9157 or E-mail at
[email protected]) costs about $50 and has, over the last 5 years,
been my "magic bullet" on at least 100 different occasions. Within 10
minutes, we had retrieved and backed-up a copy of Chumash Mythology.
I've used CanOpener to recover embedded graphics, text and even
sounds from within documents that were mutilated by viruses, power
failures, magnetic corruption, accidental keystrokes and "cosmic
radiation" (usually "Murphy" related.) Most of these dead or damaged
files couldn't be opened through the parent application or any other
software. So, whether you're a consultant, or have a teenager who
doesn't have time to make backup copies of homework, or you just want
to keep an inexpensive piece of "data insurance" on your hard drive,
CanOpener is the best software investment you'll ever make.

You can always use faster SIMMS than specified but it's like putting a
higher octane gasoline (petrol) in you car. If the car doesn't need the
higher octane, you're spending money for no increase in performance. These
days tho' I'm not sure 100ns SIMMS are even being sold, so, with prices

The easiest way would be to use a graphics program that can create Startup=

I've had the same problem too. I use extensions manager extensively, but
not the control strip. Same problem, though - if I reboot (or if it goes to
sleep), there's about an 80% chance the machine will forget those settings.
It always comes up as volume 0/mute.
I'm running a 7200/75 with 7.5.3 rev 2 and Speed Doubler. The problem was
there under 7.5.2 (? the last rev? I forget...) as well, however.

Subject: Need network help...
I need a networking solution for less than $1,000.00 and I'm hoping
someone out there can help with some advice.
In the building in which I work, I have set up and administer a 10 node
AppleTalk network (all Macs). On this network, we use Now Up To
Date & Now Contact to do the scheduling and contact management for our
entire department. Several weeks ago our department chair also became
chair of another department - located in the building next door to us.
The dilemma is that we need to get some of their machines to share the
calendar and contacts. The Macs in the other building are on an ethernet
network with a direct connection to the new campus fiber optic backbone.
However, our building is not scheduled to be put "on line" until next
summer.
I have thought about using ARA and QuickKeys to set up a automatic late
night modem connection to the machines across the way to synch the
calendars. The down side is that the calendars will be 6-8 hours out of
synch - but that is liveable for us.
Another problem is that the phone lines are PBX, so that means to use a
modem connection I need a PBX converter. AND it means that the
secretaries in the other department need to remember to activate the PBX
boxes at night and deactivate in the morning.
Anyone have a more elegant, simple, and fairly inexpensive solution?
Please email to me PRIVATELY. The address is [email protected].
Thanks!

Subject: Where can I find Sys 7.1 UK?
Hello Maccies,
My friend bought an LC 11 second hand rather than a PC, as an educational
aid for his two children, because I told him Mac OS is superior. So far so
good, they buy it use it and even abuse it some. I warned them to find a
set of system disks as back up, whoever sold them the Mac gave them no
spare system. In one ear and out the other.
They run it for a few weeks with occasional advice from me. Somehow a lot
of Control Panels and extentions are trashed and it still runs. Until
tonight. My pal phones up to say he has a question mark inside a disk at
boot up, can I help? So I go round with Norton Utils etc to fix it. I've
been there a time or ten myself and at this point am quite confident. I
made a Start up disk for LC11 on my 630, 7.5.3 with Norton Start Up Disk
Builder.
I run Norton Disk Doc and optimised with speed disk. The fragmentation was
"severe", amongst other horrors. The system file was in a bad way and
needed replacing asap. But there is no Disk Tools or System Disk set!!! By
now I wanted out as I could see the future, and it was not good. At reboot
my pal was ecstatic as it seemed ok, smiley face welcome to Macintosh etc,
for two seconds, then the question mark kicked in again. Told you the
future stank
This is leading up to me begging for info about obtaining a set of System
Disks, OS 7.1 (or maybe 7.0.1?) in The UK. Unwittingly I have made my
friends think Macs are crap and I need to restore not only my reputation,
but Macintosh's. Even though the blame lies with the shark who sold 'em the
LC11, and with my pal for not taking me with him to see the thing
initially. Any ideas out there? Any URLs FTP sites phone numbers are
welcome. I would give them 7.5 but they only have 32 MB drive and 4 MB ram.
Email is preferred for input as speed is the thing here.
TIA,

Save to PC formatted diskette (rename to 8.3

message basically saying this is Mac PowerPoint presentation and you will
only be able to read it.

These

I've had the same problem too. I use extensions manager extensively, but
not the control strip. Same problem, though - if I reboot (or if it goes to

It always comes up as volume 0/mute.

Subject: XWindows Client for Power Mac
Is there an equivalent to MacX for the PowerMac? Either an upgraded
version of MacX or a program from another company would do. If not,
what other solution to dvi previewing have people come up with.
Thanks.
