Subject: [*] AutoLauncher 1.0a

This program is a quick and simple program launcher/system shutdown
utility. I was preparing to hand in one of my labs, in which i had to
use their @#$#@!$ IBMs...and when i tried to pull up my main code,
M$ Word told me that the file was corrupt! I hardly EVER have such
problems with the mac...anyhow, i needed another copy. Well, thinking
ahead of myself, i had set up my macintosh with a copy of Hermes ][ and
loaded the files so i could log in and retrieve. Unfortunately, my
computer-illiterate mother was at home...i tried calling, but there
was a slight snag. and i had no way of telling her what was wrong (nor
even guess what was wrong, although i have my suspicions).

Back to the reason i wrote this: I called home after 3:45pm (i had
set the computer to shutdown at 3:30pm using the Star Trek clock). the
modem answered. 20 minutes later i tried again, and found it ringing...
however, my mother told me that she found Hermes still running so she
turned it off herself.
I was sick and tired of this. So i wrote this program. The original
purpose is to launch an application at a certain time (ie Hermes at
the time i should arrive at school) and shutdown the computer at a certain
time (ie the time i should no longer need Hermes). For a while i have
been looking for a program like this...so i decided to write one.

This is WhoCaresWare. I really wrote this for myself, and i didn't
really see anyone else bothering to use it (much less pay me for it). So
I didn't add registration, lock-outs, etc. etc....all i ask is if you
find this very handy, show me your gratitude. ('Cides, this was pretty
much a one-day project)

What's new in 1.3.2?
- created folders have the same size and view like the parent folder
- an existing log-file will be overwritten 'more nicely'
- a leading '0' is added for the first 9 folder-names

Subject: [*] DeepPict CDEF V1.0

** What it be? **
DeepPict is a "better picture item" for dialogs. With DeepPict, you can have
different depths (including 1-bit) pictures and have DeepPict select the right
one for the monitor(s) it is displayed on. DeepPict does work across multiple
monitors. DeepPict is small (2.5K).

By default, DeepPict will use two PICTs, one for 1-3 bit monitors and another
for 4-bit and higher. You can modify this behaviour with a PIC# resource (see
below).

DeepPict loads and releases the PICTs as necessary. With a 'PIC#' resource, you
can have DeepPict load the PICTs for various depths you choose. If no match is
found, DeepPict will use the first PICT in the PIC# (which should be B&W if you
want to support old Macs without ColourQD).

Subject: [*] DiskTracker 1.0.3

DiskTracker is an extremely powerful and flexible disk cataloging and
management system. It combines a huge feature set with a really easy
to use Mac-like interface. With DiskTracker, you can quickly and
easily create a catalog of every file on every one of your floppy
disks, hard drives, CD-ROMs, optical drives, servers, or whatever.
Naturally, DiskTracker can read into StuffIt and Compact Pro archives
and self-expanding applications.

After scanning your disks, you can then search the catalog at
unbelievable speeds with the powerful searching facility (including
multi-parameter and duplicate file searching). You can easily create
professional looking disk labels with the built in disk labeling
facility and label template designer.

Features include:

-View the contents of scanned volumes in a familiar easy-to-use
System-7-style file list.
-Built in (fast!) virtual memory scheme ensures that you won't run out
of memory, even when scanning huge volumes and CD-ROMs with only 600K
of allocated RAM!
-Intelligent disk scanner can operate in the background and allows
either scans of online volumes and servers or floppy disks (insert
disks one at a time to scan them).
-Launch files directly from the program, or have the finder display
them for you.
-Fast, multi-parameter (use AND, OR, or XOR) searches. Search on almost
20 different criteria!
-Really powerful disk labeling system allows completely automated disk
label production.
-Draw your own label templates using the built in MacDraw(tm)-style
template editor, featuring powerful file-lists and rotatable text.
-Fat binary runs in native mode on PowerMacs or on 680x0 based
machines.
-Plus much, much, much more!

DiskTracker requires System 7.0 or later and at least 600K of available
memory.

This Applescript sends e-mail messages to, and gets e-mail messages
>From your mail server. The script sends via e-mail the contents of
text files dropped on it's Icon.

When it is run by double clicking, it checks to see if there is any
mail waiting for you. Messages are retrieved and saved in a folder
called "AppleScript Inbox" on your Desktop.

It If a PPP connection is not in place when the script runs, it will
open a connection and then close it when it is finished. If there is
already a PPP connection in place when the Script runs, when finished
it will leave the PPP connection as if found it.

This Script is designed to work for users with SMTP mail hosts with
names like "mail.wherever.com". Maybe it will work with other sorts of
set-ups, I don't know.

What it requires:

This script has only been tested on my 68K mac with System 7.5.3 and
FreePPP 2.5. It does not work properly with OpenTransport. Use
Traditional Networking. In addition to AppleScript v1.0 or later and
Drag and Drop, Scriptable finder, the following Scripting Additions
are required:

Late Night Software's MacPPP Control OSAX
GTQ Programming Suite OSAX
Mango Tree Software's TCP/IP Scripting Additions OSAX

All of which are available separately on the various archives.

Subject: [*] HomeSchool Planner 2.0 Demo

Keywords: homeschooling, plan, log, grades, times, subjects, family, school,
education, learning

Uh-oh. You just found out that your state requires you to keep track of a
whole lot of things having to do with homeschooling! Quick! Here's HomeSchool
Planner, an easy-to-use tool for homeschooling families.

The software cuts down on the amount of typing and calculating that one has
to do in order to keep complete records. Users can plan or log activities on
any day of the week or year (not just weekdays), and any hour of the day (not
just regular school hours). It's also very customizable, so if one family
participates in totally different schooling activities than another family,
they can enter their unique ideas.

With a point-and-click interface, homeschoolers can create a printable plan
and/or log. It's a breeze to enter start and end times, and then HomeSchool
Planner will calculate the duration of each activity automatically! Likewise,
entering grades is a cinch, and then the program calculates cumulative
grades. Users like the software because it's a nice, neat way to stay
accountable.

Among the new features now in version 2.0: a yearly calendar with all
homeschooling dates marked and counted; calculation of cumulative time spent
on each subject as well as Carnegie units for transcripts; grade calculation
on a quarterly, semester, or yearly basis; and easier creation of new plans.

You have our permission to place this demo on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] Hubert's 2D/3D Macintosh Icons, v1.3

Included in this icon package are:

- A ResEdit resource containing ics#, ics4, ics8, ICN#, icl4, and icl8
resources of all the Mac "form factors" that have ever been released,
with the exception of the original Lisa (Mac XL) the entire line of
PowerBooks, and the clones. Explanation is in enclosed documentation.
- A folder containing the exact same icons as the resource file, ready
for immediate copy-and-paste to your hard drive.
- Simpletext Read-only files: General info and Release History

* What really distinguishes Hubert's 2D/3D Mac Icons from other
Macintosh machine icon archives is that virtually every single
variation of Mac form factors has been included. Remember the original
LC? It was slated to have 2 internal disk drives, but at the last
minute Apple decided to put a hard drive in instead, so a case cover
was used to cover up the drive slot. If you look closely, at the "LC
(original)" icon, you'll be able to make it out. Very minor variations
in Mac cases, such as the "lip" found in all manual-inject disk
drive-equipped Macs (try saying that five times fast!) or a slight
remold of the disk drive and CD areas (for example, some of the
II-series, the Centris 610 series and the Quadra series) are included.
=46or instance, the Quadra 800 icon set has eight variations, which
include the 4 different optional drive (CD and DAT) locations.
Whatever desktop Macintosh you have, in whatever configuration, you
should be able to find a matching icon.. Additionally, all of these
icons look great no matter what depth monitor you have, although black
and white _and_ in "View By" _anything_ except "Icon" is pushing the
limits somewhat.

* For those of you who have a 520-series Mac (ie the Mac TV, LC 520,
575, 580 and Performa equivalents) and can't find a 3D icon of your
Mac anywhere else, try this one! I spent a few hours getting it right.

Note:
* This release marks the return of the 2-Dimensional icon set as well.
Depending on the response generated by the 2D icons (ie if no one
wants them or some people do want them), the 2D set will either be
nixed or continue to be updated. Maintaining the 3D set is hard
enough, if no one wants or needs the 2D set, it'll also be easier for
me in terms of work.

=B0 You *may* include this on any CD-ROM or other commercial packages,
provided that you inform me via e-mail of your intent to do so. My
response is not required for you to include them; I ask only that you
inform me of the fact that you have done so!

Subject: [*] Math utility app -- Regression 2.0

I am uploading this on behalf of the developers.

Regression 2.0 was designed for physics related lab computations. Many
experiments in laboratory conditions require comparisons between two sets
of variables. Often long logarithmic computations are necessary to derive
an equation. Regression 2.0 was designed to eliminate this step by
automatically providing power, exponential, logarithmic, and linear
relationships.

Subject: [*] Point Recorder 1.1.0 (68K)

Point Recorder is a program to record successive mouse coordinate at
fixed time interval. Mac is the preferred platform to display motion
picture, so a lot of technical and scientific use are possible.
Following with the mouse an element of a motion picture on the screen
using Point Recorder you can transform a trajectory in the x,y
successive position in the time. Interval time is customizable. Option
to get coordinate only if they are changing.

Result can be saved on disk as text. No limit on the number of
successive recordable coordinate. The only limit is the total RAM of
the Mac. Point Recorder use a C efficient algorithm, is fast and
small, getting 60 point/sec is no a problem on a enough fast Mac.

New in the 1.1 version:

Different kind of cursor to track point movements.
Shareware, available both for Mac and native for PPC.
Inclusion in CD ROM is permitted.

Subject: [*] Techno System Clock Sounds

Enhance your Macintosh by utilizing great sound features that you may not
have known you had!

The "Techno" System Clock sounds make an excellent addition to any Mac
with System 7.5 or above, or anyone with the SuperClock Control Panel.
Used with the "Date and Time" control panel that comes standard with the
Mac OS or SuperClock, these sounds enhance your computer by making a
sound play at 1/4 past, 1/2 past, 1/4 'Til, and at the top of the hour.
If you choose, you can even have it chime the same number of times as the
hour.

The Techno System Clock sounds are a futuristic, hi-tech collection of
sounds that compliment one another well. There is one for 1/4 Past, 1/2
Past, 1/4 'Til, Top of the Hour, and a Chime. The sounds are of a
hard-hitting techno-type orchestra crash that play to the melody of a
grandfather clock. 1/4 past is 1/2 the bar, 1/2 past is the entire bar,
1/4 'Til is 1 1/2 of the bar, and Top of the Hour is the bar played
twice. The chime is a very cool orchestral hit that bends downwards and
sounds great when chiming.

The Techno System Clock Sounds package is available in both 16-bit and
8-bit, stereo formats. The 16-bit samples are at a 44.1 kHz sample rate
and are virtually CD quality and work well if you have a nice audio
set-up for your Mac. If you are wishing to minimize memory usage, the
8-bit version is still a quality set, but are not as clear as the 16-bit
version.

The 8-bit version is downloadable here, and the 16-bit version is
available for download at the *newly enhanced* Clixsounds WWW site at:

Installation of the System Clock SOunds sounds is very easy, and
step-by-step instructions are included for proper set-up. You must have
System 7.5 or above installed, or use the SuperClock control panel.

Read that dialog box more closely. It says "LARGEST Unused Block", not=
TOTAL Unused Memory. The unused blocks can't be merged together because=
they're separated by used blocks containing programs that are still running=
=2E

If you quit all running programs, their memory can usually be merged=
together into one large unused space again. But there's a catch: some=
programs will use some shared library code or system extension that doesn't=
get loaded until it's needed, and after the program quits, that shared code=
is still sitting there waiting for another program that needs it. That bit=
of memory is now permanently used and cannot be freed until you shut down=
or restart your Mac.

In the FreePPP Setup window, click "Modem Setup...". Under "Modem Init
String Settings", there are three options.

If you select "Use:", it displays a text entry field where you can enter a
modem init string.

If you select "Use init string from account configuration", you can specify
a different modem init string for each internet account.

To change the modem init string for a specific account, starting from the
FreePPP Setup window: select the "Accounts" tab; select an internet account
and click on "Edit..."; select the "Connection" tab. You'll see a text

Subject: Help!

I'm frustrated!

I've got a Powerbook 5300, 8 mb RAM, running RAM Doubler 1.62 and Speed
Doubler 1.12. I'm using an external Supra Express 14.4 modem, which I hook up
through the one serial port (haven't got the money to upgrade to a PC Card
28.8). I'm running 7.5.3 rev. 2.

I have had an AWFUL time getting the modem to perform at acceptable levels. I
hook up to a local BBS using First Class 3.12, and I have a PPP connection to
the internet. (I use Free PPP 2.5rf and Netscape Navigator 2.02). After
numerous clean installs, looking for updates, tinkering with extensions, etc.,
I've got it running at least as fast as our office Centris 610 with the same
modem, but with the following problems:

1) I've had to disable Speed Doubler. The main culprit was Speed Access, but
the Emulator seems to slow things down as well, particularly in Netscape.
Connectix hasn't responded to my e-mail yet.

2) I have to run under Classic Networking. Open Transport (1.1, and yes, I
have reinstalled it and used the network selector) is slower than molasses and
very unstable with Netscape. It hangs the whole screen often.

3) I think there was also a conflict with desktop printing. I've disabled it,
and wonder if the problem is because the external modem shares the one serial
port with the printer. Does desktop printing keep the serial port busy, or
check it often?

Obviously, I'd like to be able to run under Open Transport. It's easier to
configure and is supposed to be faster. Any help? I'd also like to run Speed
Doubler, as in everything else it has been a big improvement. Anybody else had
these problems? It's running okay now, but it bugs me that I've had so much
problem. Is it my particular machine, or are others having problems? I've
phoned Apple and got on their e-mail list for the repair extension program,
but nothing I've read has suggested it will help my problem.

Appreciate any help,
Gregg Koskela ([email protected])

Port Juggler won't give you more serial ports; it'll just let you switch the
one
you've got among several physical devices. If you want to use more than one at
the same time, you'll need to consider something like Creative Solutions'
Hurdler/Hustler products, which give you up to 4 57.6kbps or 2 115kbps or 1
230kbps SCSI- or NuBus-based (your choice) serial ports.

They're often listed in the smaller ads in the back of MacUser or Macworld.

Cheers!

Apple's utility will not recognize drives that do not have Apple ROMs.

You have two options:

1. Purchase a third-party SCSI formatter like FWB HD Toolkit or
Silverlining.

2. Patch Apple's utility to recognize non-Apple drives. I believe there
is a patcher in the info-mac archives that will do this.

Subject: Power Book/internet connect problem

Collected wisdom:
I am trying to help a user make a net connection but have run into a snag.
I understand the variables of net connections are endless, but let me take
a crack at this and see if it rings a bell:

She's using a Powerbook 230 duo with a Global Village Mercury internal
modem (I think a 14.4), MacTcp, MacPPP, and dialing into our ISP, unix.
She seems to make the connection, gets the default Netscape page, goes to
Yahoo!, selects a site from search, goes there, and then stalls out when
she tries to link again. At first she thought she was still connected, but
now she believes the link goes dead. (her modem must be very quiet.) I've
gone thru PPP configs and timeout settings, lowered the speed,
checked/changed flow control (apparently internal bus modems need only have
flow control set to 'none'), and messed with init strings. All to no
avail. She can connect to AOL (ick). She had nearly the identical problem
with another local ISP, but I am determined to get her on line.
Any ideas? Powerbook users? Thanks for all you help in advance.

Subject: ProMAX and all that JAZ

As reluctant as I am to buy into new, untested technology, I am in need of
large, removable storage, i. e. the JAZ drive. I have seen them advertised
for the past couple months practically everywhere for $599, but now that I
need one, no one seems to have one. In fact, it appears that no one has ever
had one.

However, the people I have called are willing to sell me a JAZ drive packaged
by some outfit named ProMax (ProMacs? ProMaquez?), which is "exactly the
same" except that it has their name on it.

Has anyone had any experience with one of these things? Either JAZ or
ProWhatever? Good or bad?

JAZ does exist, I've seen one, and the guy who owns it, loves it. I've heard
of a second one, and its owners say its disks are susceptible to ruination
>From dust -- (I thought this was a SyQuest problem and Bernoulli was supposed
to not have it.)

Anyway, any advice out there? Suggestions? Anyone actually own a ProMacs JAZ
drive and care to tell about it? How about some words from those of you who
have spent wome time with the real JAZ -- more than a day or two would be
good? Any one had problems with either? I've heard good things about Iomega
service. I have never even heard of a ProMaQuex. What say you?

I'm running out of hard-disk space, my SyQuest is beginning to behave
weirdly, I have another big job coming in and I need to do something soon.

Subject: SCSI and PBs

I'm delighted to have seen the definitive answer to the Mac-ZIP-PB SCSI
question the other day. As I said, I don't know from ZIP drives, so I had
to guess based upon what a ZIP-owning grad stoont told me. As I suspected,
she was rather less than accurate. Like Goodwife Bloom, she is superb in
her areas of interest and couldn't care less about hardware details.

And the definitive answer was quite right. See what SCSI IDs are in use
by the host Mac (I forgot about SCSI 3 for built-in CD-ROMs) in addition
to what other IDs are in use before assigning an ID to the PB.

My "sort of" answer to the original question received a private e-mail
that I flushed. I do that to anyone who can't spell "stupid naughtyword"
properly. It was a flame. The gist of it was that PB 190's do NOT have
the capabilitiy of being "client" HD's to a desktop Mac, so my response
was at best partially appropriate. Hoo boy is that a cleansed version!

Say what? The note was rude, but the subject matter continues to bother
me. Apple offers both types of HDI-30 cable (SCSI and Dock) for "all"
PowerBooks. I assumed that meant *all* PBs could be client HD's to a
desktop Mac via the SCSI chain.

I'd like to know. Are there any PB's that cannot "dock" into a SCSI chain,
or was my correspondent misinformed?

Subject: Using DOS Cards in clock chipped 6100s

I'm curious if there is anyone out there using a DOS Cards in clock chipped
6100?

The reason I ask is that a collegue, who homebrewed his clock chipper is
installing a DOS card and finds the two heatsinks on the x86 and 601 are
back to back. So the x86 heatsink interferes with the fan, which is mounted
in the 601 heatsink and is proud of the top of the fan by a few
millimeters.

How are the fans mounted in the commercial clock chippers?

Are they placed so that they're flush with the top of the heatsink (and so
have very little room undearneath them for ventilation)?

I have a DOS Card in a 6100/60 and I'm planning on clock chipping it.

Any suggestions?
