Subject: [*] ChemProject 1.2
ChemProject is a program for the evaluation of a chemical synthesis in
terms of material amounts and their costs, featuring a highly interactive
graphical interface. A synthesis can consist of a main branch and up to 15
connected branches. Data are analyzed for process efficiency according
to a wide selection of criteria. Material prices may conveniently be
imported from customizable and freely combinable price lists. A variety of
detailed, carefully designed print reports is provided (this demo version
allows previews only).
What's New in version 1.2:
* A number of inferface bugs removed: highly improved robustness of
the program.
* The problem with RAM Doubler and the PPC-version is resolved.
* ChemProject does not depend on special extensions any more: no
more tedious installations required, more inert against future
Mac OS upgrades.
* Revised manual.
System Requirements:
* System 7.1 and up.
* 5 MB of free RAM (Native PPC-version: 8 MB free RAM; 4 MB when virtual
memory or RAM Doubler are on).
* 68030 processor and up, PowerMac recommended.
I give permission for my program (both versions) to be included on the
Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] Netscape Search Hack
Netscape Search Menu Item:
This is for all you people who DON'T like Netscape's built-in search menu
item and wish it pointed to a better search engine. I saw a patch for
Netscape that fixed it to use AltaVista, but I thought people might want to
have more freedom of choice. So here you go:
1. Open a COPY of Netscape with ResEdit or similar utility.
2. Open the "STR#" resource.
3. Open resource ID 4000 (Directory URLs).
4. In the string numbered 7, put the URL of the search engine you like to
use.
5. Quit ResEdit and save changes.
6. Test the copy of Netscape to be sure it works. If it works, replace
the old copy with your "fixed" copy.
7. Ta-da! The "Internet Search..." menu item in Netscape will now take
you to your favorite search engine.
8. If you used this hack, send me some e-mail as a thank-you. I can be

Pixel Spy is a simple utility which allows you to determine the magnitude
of the various color components which make up a color on the screen.
Specifically, you can select a pixel from the screen, and Pixel Spy will

that pixel. You may also modify these displayed codes to manually change

Subject: [*] SimpleDate 1.3.1 - A small, fast calendar program
SimpleDate is a small, fast calendar application that can be invoked
and dismissed with a minumum of fuss. Its primary feature is the
ability to display multiple calendars for any month from the years 1
to 2500 A.D. It can display multiple months (one window per month) at
a time, and its month displays can be resized to taste. The current
day may be highlighted in SimpleDate=BCs calendars, and users can choose
between Sunday-first or Monday-first week displays. Complete balloon
help is available.
SimpleDate comes as a fat binary, so it should run native either on
680x0 or PowerPC Macintoshes without any additional intervention from
you.
Changes in Version 1.3.1:
* corrected a bug that caused bogus AppleEvent error messages when
running SimpleDate while recording an AppleScript with Script Editor
1.1.1
Changes in Version 1.3:
* made SimpleDate=BCs highlight color (for the current day) use the
Highlight Color in the Color control panel
* moved SimpleDate colors to ResEdit-changeable resources in the
SimpleDate Preferences file
(see SimpleDate Colors below for more information on the first two changes)
* extended SimpleDate=BCs years to range from 1 to 2500 A.D.
* optimized SimpleDate=BCs code for size
* fixed various bugs that caused crashes on Macs that do not have Color
QuickDraw
* made SimpleDate remember multiple window positions (see Multiple Window
Support below)
* added =84Previous Month=BE and =84Next Month=BE items to the menu bar
* improved SimpleDate=BCs handling of low memory conditions
System Requirements
SimpleDate requires a Macintosh with System 7 or greater.

Subject: [*] Update Sogni & Spade
The attached file converts the Sword Dream application, Italian versions
1.6 and 1.7, to Italian version 1.7.1. The upgraded version runs at native
speed on PowerPC Macintoshes and fixes a bug.
Version 1.7.1 of the Sword Dream application fixes two bugs of v1.7 which
were reported to us. Both bugs concern only the PowerPC code inside Sword
Dream. If you own a 680x0-based Macintosh, you have no use for Sword Dream
1.7.1 and you can continue using version 1.7 safely.
For complete information on Sword Dream - the shareware, modular role
playing game for Macintosh - visit http://www.comenius.com/dream/
1.7.

7.5.3 (only for PCI Macs): Apple France sends a CD ROM to all registered
owners of a PCI Mac - not registered owners can ask them it via Internet
(they ask you the serial number of your Mac: I don't know if the Mac must
have been bought in France, or if they send it only to a French address - I
think you have a 95% opportunity to get it, anyway)
7.5 update 2.0: SVM Mac, Univers Mac & Golden enclose the upgrade on the CD
ROM of this month (sorry, in the French upgrade there must be some bug, and
one of the magazines decided at the last minute not to enclose the upgrade,
promising the final version for the next month - I don't remember which of
them, I'm only sure it's not SVM Mac).
Upgrade of the upgrade 2.0 or upgrade of 7.5.3? (I'm still a little
confused, that means that I'm getting old - or that at Apple somebody's
going crazy) French: it will be on next month's CD ROM of the magazines
above.

me.
There is a problem doing this. The Macintosh serial port is a RS-422 interface
and the serial ports of a PC or a UNIX machine are a RS-232 (for most cases).
These two interfaces have different electrical specifications and are not
compatible if you are particular. Neverthless it is possible to connect these
two interfaces (but be careful). There is a document by Ben Cranston on
info-mac
(/info/hdwr/serial-ports-doc.txt) describing how to build such a serial cable
(mini-DIN-8 to DB-25 connectors). It sepcifies the wiring to connect to both a
serial peripheral (like a modem) and a terminal (like a PC or UNIX machine).
It only lacks the pin assignment of a DB-9 connector (if you have to use that
instead of a DB-25). Here it is:
1 DCD or CD signal in
2 RxD RD in
3 TxD TD out
4 DTR DTR out
5 GND GND gnd
6 DSR DSR in
7 RTS RTS out
8 CTS CTS in
9 RI RI out
Hope this helps.
Happy soldering and Macing,
Oliver Hammrich.

I can't say for sure what's wrong, but it's definitely not normal in my
experience. At a guess, someone's re-assigned some commands using QuicKeys

Subject: [Q] Ram Leak and extra serial ports
Hello,
I have two unrelated questions for your collective wisdom:
1) I have noticed recently that the amount of RAM my 8100 reports doesn't
always add up. After starting and quiting many apps throughout the day, I
can quit out of everything (so that only the Finder is running) and look at
the "About this Macintosh" window. The numbers reported for System memory
and unused memory do not add up to my 32 megs of real RAM. Sometimes there
is a discrepency as large as 10 megs! I am running 7.5.3r2 on an 8100/80. I
use OptiMem (which has made my Mac MUCH more stable), Conflict Catcher, and
the True Finder Integration from Stuffit Delux 4. Everything else is pretty
much straght Mac.
Does anyone have any ideas before I start testing via Conflict Catcher?
2) The second question is a bit less confusing. I would love to hear from
any of you who use Port Juggler or have used NuBus Serial port cards
(assuming such beasts exist). I am about to go ISDN, but I will still use
my Global Village for faxing, and my mac is on a localtalk. That will
require 3 serial ports unless Motorola wants to sell me a NuBus Bitserfer
Pro. Any reviews or comments are welcome and will be summarize to the list.
Thanks,

I have contacted the author of Graphics Converter and he states the JPG is

Apparently I need a plain JPG (RGB??). The original was created with
Photoshop, which I don't have access to.
Does anyone know how I can convert this CMYK JPEG to a plain JPEG??

Subject: PB 190 cs--Any opinions? (Q)
Hi all,
I'm in the fortunate position of being offered a PowerBook 190cs for a very
good price (brand new, full warranty). I may find it difficult to go back
to a 68040-based machine after exposure to zippy Power Macs, but this offer
is very hard to ignore. Before taking the plunge, I'd love some
information on the following points:
o What's this business of the PB 190 running at 33/66 Mhz?
In terms of speed, does this mean marginally quicker than a Quadra
700/LC475 or a lot quicker?
o Will the internal display handle multiple resolutions? Can I
increase it to 800x600 if I am prepared to use strong glasses,
or am I stuck to using some small default screen size?
o Do I need some sort of video card to run an external monitor?
o What's the real-world battery life?
o Is 8 Mb of RAM enough for mainstream WP or internet use? I'll use
RamDoubler as well.
If anyone wants to mail me on this, I'll summarise the answers and post
them back next week.
Thanks, Ferg.

Subject: PB5300c Stop Hanging
This is an FYI for 5300 users:
I bought a 5300c 8/500 three-four months ago and retired my IIvx. I'm used
to my Macs hanging up because I'm always trying new software and utilities.
My new 5300c would, without fail, freeze at least once a day without any
clear indication as to why. Sometimes after sleep, after using my PCI
modem/ethernet card, many times with AOL 2.6... etc...
My system uses the localtalk port for networking at home, the PCI slots for
a GlobalVillage Platinum Pro, the Ethernet when away from home, I've also
upgraded to 24Mb Ram since the bottom fell out of that market, I use OT1.1
and MacPPP 2.5 [works wonderfully], the latest Netscape and Fetch, and
etc... ATM, SpeedDoubler, DiskExpress II, etc...
I've updated to AOL 2.7, updated SpeedDoubler (which I started to use when
I got the additional Ram) and run the 7.5.2 through 7.5.3 update gammut now
and want to report to everyone that with 7.5.3 Revision 2 my PB 5300c has
completely settled down. All I can say now is that I think it works too
good. I'm recommending that everyone with 5300's run the Revision 2 update
on 7.5.3.

p.s. Until a network demo using the ethernet card last night when it locked
up twice when someone attached to my Mac from another 5300 that has been

I posted that suggestion, and I use the Finder Extensions Enabler

little hack. Command-Delete + Command-T is pretty handy. To answer your
question, I'd never hack anything if there were a cleaner way to get the

Subject: StyleWriter 1200 suddenly very slow (Q)
For some reason, my StyleWriter 1200 seems to be printing very, very,
slowly. I had problems with my Performa 6200 lately and had to reinstall
the System. After installing the SW 1200 driver software it refused to
print except at one page every two minutes.
The symptoms are as follows:
o The print head moves very slowly.
o It seems to print each line very faintly, but does this twice over.
o I'm using a Canon BC01 ink cartridge, but one of these works fine on
a SW 1200 that I have connected to a PowerMac 8500/120.
Is there anything breath-takingly obvious that could be causing this?

The Zip has switchable termination and two 25-pin SCSI connectors. It can be
set
for number 5 or 6 on the SCSI chain. It has an independent power supply with
its
own brick. It stays on while plugged in, but goes into a sleep mode when empty
or inactive for a short period.
I have a Paperport Vx hooked up as the first SCSI device on the chain (no. 4),
then comes a Zip drive (no. 6) with termination on, but a cable terminating in
an APS SCSI-Dock connected out from the Zip. When I want to connect my PB5300
(set to no. 2 in the PowerBook Setup CP), I power down the system by pulling
the
plug, after shutting down of course, which cuts power to the Paperport and Zip,
too. Then I turn the Zip's termination off, connect the PB to the SCSI Dock,
plug everything in, turn on the PB, then the PowerMac. This has been trouble
free for me.
> Use something like SCSI probe to see what the ZIP's SCSI address is. Set
> the PB's logical address to something else (Not 0 or 9, please)...
The numbers 0, 3, and 7 are reserved respectively for the internal hard drive,
the internal CD-Rom, when present, and the CPU. Don't use them. Make sure each
device has it's own unique number.

Subject: VM & Sys Folder size....
I have a comment to make about the use of Virtual Memory and fluctuating
System Folder size. I am using 7.5.3 on my Performa 6300CD and have
noticed that on restart my System Folder can be anywhere from 6,184K to
over 9,000K with nothing new added! I can't figure out what is causing
this fluctuation (with NO applications open), but I do notice that by
turning on VM to 24 Meg (I have 16 real RAM installed), my System Folder
size stays stable and actually decreases in size to 5,164K!!!
What I want to know is why this happens and why VM helps this situation.
Anyone out there on the list know why???
