Subject: [*] Binary Pump 2.15

Binary pump is a file organization tool which acts as an agent,
moving files to folders based upon rules. For example, it can
move all files of types "JPEG" to a folder called "Pictures".
In addition to folders, Binary Pump can also send files to applications
or outright delete them.

In addition, Binary Pump includes file identification features which
utilize both binary tags and file name extentions to identify files.
It can also decode MacBinary II files.

Binary Pump also includes utilities for accessing deeply nested
folders/apps without the mess of aliases all over the desktop.

The archive contains a comprehensive User's Guide in MS Word
format, containing an Index, Table of Contents, Pictures, and more.

Binary Pump is a Fat-Binary.

Shareware: $20

Changes in version 2.15
---------------------------
--Rules update speed greatly improved
--no longer scans invisible files
--raised minimum memory limit to 400K
--68K versions compiled for 68020
--Updated to morefiles 1.4.2
--Compiled in CW/9
--a few other minor bug fixes

Subject: [*] Catalogue 2.0.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Catalogue utility.

Catalogue 2.0.1 is a program allowing you to track all the
removable supports that can be mounted on the Mac. I have
written this program because I have not found one that was
easy to use.

Interesting Features
* When you introduce a volume in a driver, you can decide
what the program does:
- If the Ctrl key is sunk, you can rename the volume before
saving (very useful with pre-formatted volumes).
- If the Option key is sunk, the volume is ejected after
saving.
- If the Command key is sunk, Catalogue does nothing.
$B!&(J If a volume is already mounted when the program starts,
you don't have to go to the Finder to eject it. You can do
that from the program.
* The 'Open a catalog' command allows you to select a
directory. The program then looks in the directory and
shows the recognized files. This allows you to have many
directories, one for each kind of volume, and to open them
easily.
* The search command has a lot of criteria allowing you to
find easily a file.
* There is a print command that allows you to print the
list of saved volumes and the result of a search, completly
or partly.
* You can launch an application or open a document directly
>From Catalogue. For that, just double-click on the element
with the command key sunk (the Scriptable Finder has to be
installed).

I have tried to make a simple interface, allowing to know
in a quick look where you are.

For more information, look at the Help in the Apple menu.

Subject: [*] Desktop Detective 1.0.0

Welcome to FBI's Desktop Detective! This stand-alone utility will
search for fingerprints on any of your images. Here's how:

If your image display software supports drag and drop, for example
Netscape:

* Drag the image from Netscape over the Desktop Detective window, and release
the mouse button.

Desktop Detective will search for a fingerprint, decoding what it finds.

Using copy (C) and paste (V) with any image display software:

* Display an image with your favourite image display software.
* Copy all or part of the image to the clipboard using C.
* In Desktop Detective, paste the image selection from the clipboard with V.
Your image will now be processed.

If your image is a JPEG or a PICT:

There are three other ways to open these files:
* Use drag-and-drop by dragging the image's icon onto Desktop Detective's icon
* Drop the image onto an open Desktop Detective window.
* You can also open the image from within Desktop Detective, using O.

Memory requirements:

The Desktop Detective will run with only 1000K of RAM, but it can only
process small images (about 500K). We therefore recommend using 7000K
for best performance.

Subject: [*] Fallacy Tutorial Pro 3.1

Fallacy Tutorial Pro is a shareware SuperCardr Standalone application that
provides an introduction to informal fallacies (errors in reasoning) as well
as three quizzes on these fallacies.

The software has the following features:
-Fallacy Navigator: A means to quickly move from fallacy to fallacy.
-Fallacy Cards: These cards provide the definitions, common names, and
examples of various fallacies.
-Text Export:The contents of the fallacy cards can be exported as text files.

-Notes: A handy, "multipage" electronic notepad for taking notes on the
fallacies.
-Quiz Sets: Quizzes for testing how much the user has learned from the
tutorial. Includes hints as well as an explanation of the answers (both right
and wrong answers).
-Quiz Notes: A useful notepad for taking notes during the quiz. This notepad
has the capacity to export text.
-3D Graphic interface.
-Monitor(s) Control: The user can set the bit-depth of any attached monitors
(up to three) from B&W to Millions of colors (assuming the system supports
the desired number of colors). This feature also allows the user to alter the
way Fallacy Tutorial Pro handles memory and makes it possible to run Fallacy
Tutorial Pro on very limited systems by reducing the color bit-depth.
-Backdrops: The user can choose between having a black backdrop, a white
backdrop, or no backdrop. Backdrops are preferred by some users because they
prevent leaving the application by accidentally clicking outside of an active
window. They also add to the aesthetic value of the software by blocking out
the desktop and other windows which might clash visually.
-Online Help

Requirements
=============
Fallacy Tutorial Pro is optimized to run on just about any system running the
Mac OS, from 680x0 based Macs to the PowerMacs. It is distributed in fat
binary form, so it will run in native mode on all Mac OS computers. It does
require System 7.0 or newer as well as at least 2MB of RAM. Fallacy Tutorial
Pro looks best on systems that have 8-bit video (256 colors) or better, but
it is fully usable on grayscale and B&W systems.

Subject: [*] HandyMan v1.4 - Control Strip Launching Module

HandyMan is a Control/Desktop/Extensions Strip Launching Module.

It is designed to allow quick and easy access to applications, Control Panels,
Desk Accessories, Folders and other documents stored on your Macintosh,
without having to navigate through several RFinder WindowsS or through a
multi-layered, hierarchical Apple menu.

It works by clicking on icons installed in a floating window, or dropping
documents onto them. This approach is much handier than aliases that are on
the desktop because the floating windows that contain the icons can never be
covered by windows. HandyMan also requires a lot less desktop space than the
same number of icons on the desktop.

Most important changes:
% Fixed problem of not properly removing R+S icon when unchecking RShow
Aliases FolderS and RShow Folder StructureS was off (Reported by Jeremy
Keens).
% Drops from documents from the module onto Finder applications work now.
% RAdd Row/ColumnS command added to Configuration menu.
% Introduced catalog files.
% TextLabels can go under the icons now. Shift select RShow TextLabelsS
(Request from Brett Borowski).
% Added Entry Tiling next to Icon Tiling.
% Added vertical Separator (by Chuck Chang original vertical was from Raymond
Carles).
% Dragged icon's can't no longer be dropped on itself.

And several more bugfixes...

see docs for full history.

Bert

Subject: [*] SoundApp 2.0.3

I'm happy to announce the availability of SoundApp 2.0.3. SoundApp is the
premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is
suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the
popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite
sound samples and stand-alone usage. SoundApp remains freeware, so you
may use it at no cost. Information regarding licensing the conversion
and playback routines can be found in the About Box documentation.

SoundApp 2.0 has been mailed to the popular "macgifts" list, and should
appear on Info-Mac and the University of Michigan's archive sites in a
few days. In addition, you can download it directly via the WWW from:

SoundApp 2.0.3 fixes the following problems:

* Corrected a length problem with some odd WAVE files,
* Dragging a file onto the SoundApp icon with a Play List open no longer
adds the file to the list,
* SoundApp now maintains looping and base note information when converting
between AIFF and 'snd ' resources, including System 7 sound files,
* MPEG playback now no longer causes jerky mouse movement,
* Closing the Status window via AppleScript no longer crashes.

SoundApp 2.0 requires the following:

* At least a 68020 or PowerPC-based Macintosh (sorry 68000 users!),
* System 7.0 or greater, and
* Sound Manager 3.1 or greater (3.1 can be obtained from Apple and 3.2
is included in System 7.5.3).

In addition, the following optional items are recommended:

* QuickTime 2.0 or greater for QuickTime support,
* The Drag Manager for drag and drop use in the Play Lists (part of
System 7.5 and later),
* A PowerPC-based Macintosh for MPEG support and better performance.

Please note, I have no plans to support System 6.x, 68000-based Macs,
MPEG on 680x0-based Macs or earlier versions of the Sound Manager,
sorry.

Using a LW 310 together with PageMaker is one of the most effective ways
to spend your day ;-)) . Yes, I can lough now, but about a year and a half
ago we had exactly this problem. We made a monthly 16-page publication in
PageMaker (on a Quadra 650, with lots of RAM). When we wanted to print the
proofs for reading, one page took 30 minutes or even longer, so you spent
the whole working day (8 hours) just to print 1 single copy!
The LW 310 was upgraded with as much RAM as it could handle.

I contacted Aldus/Adobe support and they confirmed that they know about
the problem, but they don't intend to do anything on their side. Finally
we got rid of the LW 310 and replaced it by a second-hand Personal LW NT,
which performs beautifully.

What I did not try then (but you could do): produce a PS file from your
publication and send it to the printer using a PS downloader, such as
DropPS from Adobe. Don't know if it works without AppleTalk, but it's
worth a try, I think.

Good luck, Christian.

The installer that updated to 7.5.3 (System Update 2.0) put (if all
went well...) a folder at the root level of your startup disk
called "Apple Extras". There you'll find a Network Software
Selector. Run it and choose Open Transport. This will make the new
networking apps visible and the old ones invisible. When you're
satisfied that all works well, I'd suggest that you delete these
invisible files but as long as they're there you can switch back to
"Classic Networking" i.e., MacTCP and the old AppleTalk.

Here's my two bits' worth on the subject.

Andreas' discourteous suggestion is all very well -- if one is using the
Romanian version of the Mac OS. But the Romanian OS isn't available in
North America; it has to be ordered from Germany or Romania, which, as I
know from personal experience, is a real pain in the neck, in addition
to being fairly expensive. Moreover, using a US applications with non-US
systems is a potential source of conflicts, and I avoid it whenever
possible. A font encoded according to Apple's MacOS Romanian tables
wouldn't be useful, by itself, for typing text in Romanian on a Mac
running the US version of the system.

On the other hand, Paul's solution isn't good either. It moves characters
>From low (0-127) to high (128-255) ASCII, which means it can only
be used on Romanian text; it will scramble anything else. It's also not
compatible with Apple's encoding, which might or might not be a problem.
(Keep in mind that although Macs were used in DTP in Romania since 1990,
it was only last year that Apple finally released a Romanian version of
the Mac OS.)

What to do then? My solution to the problem consisted in combining a
Romanian font (encoded according to Apple's tables) with a customized
(via ResEdit) keyboard layout, wherein characters seldom used in
Romanian, e.g. "q", were moved to option-key combinations, and replaced
with diacriticals, e.g. a-breve. This solution allowed me to use the
same font for both English and Romanian text, maintain compatibility
with Apple's encoding, and to touch-type Romanian on a US keyboard, with
a US version of the OS. Switching from the Romanian layout to the US
layout is quick and simple (cmd-opt-spbar); and a slight modification in
the itlc resource causes a little flag to appear in the menu bar,
indicating which layout is currently in use.

You should look into the Farallon Netopia ISDN Modem. They have a Web site
where you can order the ISDN adapter, which is only US$349, over the
internet. Farallon has a very good reputation, although I have not used
this device personally. The URL for the web page is:

You could also consider getting the Motorolla BitSURFER Pro ISDN Modem,
which is available for the Mac for US$380 from MacMall. You can also order
via the Web at their web site:

I remember this procedure of parking a HD from my first 30 meg drive
(wow, what a size!) which I used with the Mac Plus. There was a small
application which needed to be run before switching off the drive.

But today, this is obsolete. I think all drives which still work have
some system built in to move the heads to a safe place/position when
they are switched off. Don't ask me how this is done exactly.

Lately I have been having trouble getting my PowerWave 604/132 to power-up.
When I press the power key on the keyboard, the power light turns on on
the PowerWave but I get no chime and nothing spins up. I seem to be able
to power-up if my modem is not connected.

I used a different modem and different cable and still could not power-up.
Sometimes, when I use Config PPP, and click on the Open button, the machine
shuts down (windows close automatically). Is this a symptom of low power
to the main board? It powers-up when I have my MIDI interface connected to
the same port (modem), but not when I switch it to a modem.

Has anyone else had similar problems? Any advice would be appreciated. I
called PowerComputing, but they weren't much help.

I've been having trouble trying to eject floppies via the 'put away'

Is this normal? I mean, has this escaped the people at Apple? or is it

Subject: Reno CD-ROM Drive

I'm running an external Reno CD-ROM drive on my PPC Duo. The CD-ROM is
using FWB's bundled CD-ROM Toolkit control panel, version 1.09.

The problem is that every few minutes the computer tries to access the
CD-ROM, and if the drive it empty, puts up an error message along the
lines of "Your CD-ROM takes a long time to respond...". This dialog has
to be acknowledged, which hangs any on-line session in progress.

I can get around the problem by always keeping a CD in the drive, and FWB
have recommended that I upgrade to a later version of their software.
However, I'd rather revert to the Apple's original CD software, but I
can't get it to work. Even if I load just the system software (7.5.3 rev
2), CDs will not mount, so I don't think it's a conflict problem.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Your Powerbook must be in "SCSI disk mode" and the Id be set to a number
different from all others on the chain. That way you can use the Powerbook
as an external drive to your desktop computer.

Your Powerbook can however not "control" the chain - it=B4's a bad idea
to have 2 "hosts" on the same chain, and as far as I know there is no
way to use a desktop system in "SCSI disk mode".

You can set the Id your PB uses when in SCSI disk mode via the Powerbook
control panel.

Pro, Word 5.0, Excel 4.0, MCC fax/modem software -incl. QuickView-, Eudora,
Netscape 2.0 Navigator.

Until now no major problem.

I have recently purchased a scanner type Visioneer PaperPort Vx. The
software has been installed successfully. Together with the scanner
software I was given also Cardscan (business card scanner-organizer
software).

Since I purchased this scanner I register the following problems:

a) I cannot use a data switch-box. By using the switchbox I can use the
printer but not the scanner (the system reports no connection with this
unit). I made several attempts and many double checks: no result. I wonder
if I have other options to experiment in order not to change the
connections manually.

b) Generally I have repeated system crashes. I did my checks by using
Norton Utilities (Disk Doctor) and the First Aid Kit provided by Apple.
Everything seems to be OK. I wonder if I have some conflicts within the
system (although the scanner and the PaperPort are off). Very often the
systems refuse to open applications because of no memory available (but
this cannot be).

c) With Paper Port ON, I notice extreme difficulty to scan at higher
resolutions (almost impossible) and also to link to Fax, Word, Excel,
Cardscan

d) Cardscan cannot work because of lack of memory (absurd).

I tried to post a message to the Visioneer WWW site but with no reply until
now. And I really hope to find someone of you who unfortuantely had the
same or similar experience in order to find out a good solution.

Thank you in advance and best regards.
