Aaron 1.4 (June 14, 1996) by Greg Landweber and Edward Voas
(c) 1996 Greg Landweber and Amargosa Software, Inc.
>From the authors of Greg's Buttons, Greg's Browser, and DoubleScroll.

Why wait for eight? Your Mac can have the Copland user experience today!
Just drop Aaron into your Extensions folder, and your Mac will look just
like the Copland Default Theme will (Aaron is based on Apple's official
Copland interface specs). Aaron gives you 3D Copland-style windows, scroll
bars, buttons, folder icons, menus, fonts, pop-ups, progress boxes, Finder
window headers, and more. Aaron is a fat binary for Macs and PowerMacs.

Version 1.4 colorizes the icons in the Open/Save box folder popup and the
Finder window title bar popup. It also fixes various bugs and improves the
progress bars and Finder window title bar icon routines.

Subject: [*] Catalogue 2.0.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Catalogue utility.

Catalogue 2.0.1 is a program allowing you to track all the
removable supports that can be mounted on the Mac. I have
written this program because I have not found one that was
easy to use.

Interesting Features
* When you introduce a volume in a driver, you can decide
what the program does:
- If the Ctrl key is sunk, you can rename the volume before
saving (very useful with pre-formatted volumes).
- If the Option key is sunk, the volume is ejected after
saving.
- If the Command key is sunk, Catalogue does nothing.
$B!&(J If a volume is already mounted when the program starts,
you don't have to go to the Finder to eject it. You can do
that from the program.
* The 'Open a catalog' command allows you to select a
directory. The program then looks in the directory and
shows the recognized files. This allows you to have many
directories, one for each kind of volume, and to open them
easily.
* The search command has a lot of criteria allowing you to
find easily a file.
* There is a print command that allows you to print the
list of saved volumes and the result of a search, completly
or partly.
* You can launch an application or open a document directly
>From Catalogue. For that, just double-click on the element
with the command key sunk (the Scriptable Finder has to be
installed).

I have tried to make a simple interface, allowing to know
in a quick look where you are.

For more information, look at the Help in the Apple menu.

Subject: [*] Ciula - Romanian font

The enclosed font Ciula was specifically designed to provide ease of
typing of Romanian text. Characters with diacritics are entered directly
with single key strokes (or shift-key combinations for capital letters),
thus increasing typing speed. The position of characters with diacritics
on the keyboard is next to the corresponding characters without
diacritics. This intuitive mapping is easy to remember and gives the
keyboard a Romanian feel. Technically, the remapping was simply achieved
by substituting the Romanian characters for the rarely used "k", "q",
"w", and "y". These four latter characters were moved to decimal codes
above 127, still allowing them to be typed using modifier keys. Ciula
was created with Fontographer v4.1 (Macromedia, Inc.).

Subject: [*] ConvertMachine 1.0.2J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the ConvertMachine package.

ConvertMachine is a powerful sound file conversion program. Any
(most) audio files dropped onto the application are converted to
AIFF, AU or WAVE format in either mono or stereo, with any of a
number of compressions and arbitrary sampling rates. It is ideal to
convert audio files to formats commonly used on the web. It allows
easy access to Audio CD tracks and QuickTime Movie audio tracks. It
will interface seemlessly with SoundMachine. It requires QuickTime
2.1 and Sound Manager 3.1 or better.

Uses and Features:

Configure ConvertMachine to any of five standard formats
(AIFF/AIFC, AU, WAVE, MacOS Finder sound files, and QuickTime
Audio); to either mono or stereo; and to an arbitrary sampling rate
and drop any format sound file onto its icon and, voila, you get it
copied to the required form.

For example, if you had a QuickTime movie with an interesting sound
track (say a stereo IMA4 compressed 44.1kHz sample rate format),
then drop it onto the configured ConvertMachine application icon
and you get a Web standard AU file created (mono, mu-law 8kHz
files).

(Behind the scenes, and you don't need to worry about this,
ConvertMachine does the following: extracts and mixes together
multiple (possibly stereo) QuickTime audio tracks; decompresses the
sound; converts the rate to 8kHz, applies mu-law compression, then
slinks away into a corner obediently waiting for its next job.)

Drag and Drop Finder Sound files (sfil), AIFF files, WAVE files and
AU files also.

Mix stereo sounds down to mono.
Compress Audio CD tracks (44.1kHz, stereo) using IMA 4:1 and get
the same quality sound reproduction with a quarter of the disk
space.
Decompress sound files.
Compress sound files.
Resample sounds.
ConvertMachine replaces the old Ulaw and Resample programs of
mine.
Automatic launch and play with SoundMachine.

Subject: [*] Desktop Detective 1.0.0

Welcome to FBI's Desktop Detective! This stand-alone utility will
search for fingerprints on any of your images. Here's how:

If your image display software supports drag and drop, for example
Netscape:

* Drag the image from Netscape over the Desktop Detective window, and release
the mouse button.

Desktop Detective will search for a fingerprint, decoding what it finds.

Using copy (C) and paste (V) with any image display software:

* Display an image with your favourite image display software.
* Copy all or part of the image to the clipboard using C.
* In Desktop Detective, paste the image selection from the clipboard with V.
Your image will now be processed.

If your image is a JPEG or a PICT:

There are three other ways to open these files:
* Use drag-and-drop by dragging the image's icon onto Desktop Detective's icon
* Drop the image onto an open Desktop Detective window.
* You can also open the image from within Desktop Detective, using O.

Memory requirements:

The Desktop Detective will run with only 1000K of RAM, but it can only
process small images (about 500K). We therefore recommend using 7000K
for best performance.

Subject: [*] Fallacy Tutorial Pro 3.1

Fallacy Tutorial Pro is a shareware SuperCardr Standalone application that
provides an introduction to informal fallacies (errors in reasoning) as well
as three quizzes on these fallacies.

The software has the following features:
-Fallacy Navigator: A means to quickly move from fallacy to fallacy.
-Fallacy Cards: These cards provide the definitions, common names, and
examples of various fallacies.
-Text Export:The contents of the fallacy cards can be exported as text files.

-Notes: A handy, "multipage" electronic notepad for taking notes on the
fallacies.
-Quiz Sets: Quizzes for testing how much the user has learned from the
tutorial. Includes hints as well as an explanation of the answers (both right
and wrong answers).
-Quiz Notes: A useful notepad for taking notes during the quiz. This notepad
has the capacity to export text.
-3D Graphic interface.
-Monitor(s) Control: The user can set the bit-depth of any attached monitors
(up to three) from B&W to Millions of colors (assuming the system supports
the desired number of colors). This feature also allows the user to alter the
way Fallacy Tutorial Pro handles memory and makes it possible to run Fallacy
Tutorial Pro on very limited systems by reducing the color bit-depth.
-Backdrops: The user can choose between having a black backdrop, a white
backdrop, or no backdrop. Backdrops are preferred by some users because they
prevent leaving the application by accidentally clicking outside of an active
window. They also add to the aesthetic value of the software by blocking out
the desktop and other windows which might clash visually.
-Online Help

Requirements
=============
Fallacy Tutorial Pro is optimized to run on just about any system running the
Mac OS, from 680x0 based Macs to the PowerMacs. It is distributed in fat
binary form, so it will run in native mode on all Mac OS computers. It does
require System 7.0 or newer as well as at least 2MB of RAM. Fallacy Tutorial
Pro looks best on systems that have 8-bit video (256 colors) or better, but
it is fully usable on grayscale and B&W systems.

Subject: [*] PrinterSwitch 1.0.4

PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to
easily select among many different printers when you print documents in
your applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.

PrinterSwitch appears right when you need it; when you select Print or
Page Setup from any program. No need to memorize hot key sequences! It
can also be activated by a convenient Control Strip Module.

It knows about LaserWriter 7 and 8 PPD files and makes sure to use the
proper PPD for each printer, eliminating a common source of Postscript
printing errors.

PrinterSwitch is shareware with a 14-day free trial period. Registration
is $14.00 for single user licenses; site and worldwide licenses are
available. Convenient registration via Kagi Shareware - pay with any
currency, credit cards, checks, etc. via mail, fax, or the internet.

Changes in Release 1.0.4

* Added support for the HP LaserJet printer driver
* Added easy registration for educational-discount customers

Release 1.0.4 is a recommended upgrade for PrinterSwitch users with HP
printers. Release 1.0.4 supercedes releases 1.0 through 1.0.3.

Hey everybody. I figured the Mac-using community might enjoy my game.

Ever wanted to star in your own, real-live rodeo?

Me neither. Instead, I thought it might be fun to recapture the magic of
Atari's Surround! on the Mac. Hop on a four-legged animal and try to
ensnare your human or computer-generated opponent with a trail of pixels
that fail to correspond to anything within my rodeo analogy. You'll receive

Subject: [*] Sicilian Numerals Font

Key Words: font, music, figured bass, Roman numeral

Sicilian Numerals is a music font for notating figured-bass and Roman
numerals.

Sicilian Numerals includes Roman numerals of all qualities, figures
(normal and slashed), ten ready-made two- and three-figure combinations,
easy-to-enter figure combinations, accidentals, upper and lower case
letters A - H, pivot-chord symbol, and a variety of other related
characters.

Sicilian Numerals can be used in any program. For Finale or other music
notation programs, users will generally enter the figures and/or Roman
numerals with the lyrics tool. Unlike with other figured bass fonts, it
is generally unnecessary to use multiple text lines (or verses) to enter
figures that appear stacked, since many of these characters are
ready-made, or can be very easily entered with a few keystrokes.

This PDF includes a character layout showing key-combinations in a
keyboard-view style, a traditional KeyCaps Chart, usage instructions
and ordering information.

Sicilian Numerals is available for Macintosh, Windows, NeXTStep, and Sun
systems. The Macintosh and Windows packages include both PostScript and
TrueType versions.

Information on other Music Fonts is available at:

Subject: [*] SoundApp 2.0.3

I'm happy to announce the availability of SoundApp 2.0.3. SoundApp is the
premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is
suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the
popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite
sound samples and stand-alone usage. SoundApp remains freeware, so you
may use it at no cost. Information regarding licensing the conversion
and playback routines can be found in the About Box documentation.

SoundApp 2.0 has been mailed to the popular "macgifts" list, and should
appear on Info-Mac and the University of Michigan's archive sites in a
few days. In addition, you can download it directly via the WWW from:

SoundApp 2.0.3 fixes the following problems:

* Corrected a length problem with some odd WAVE files,
* Dragging a file onto the SoundApp icon with a Play List open no longer
adds the file to the list,
* SoundApp now maintains looping and base note information when converting
between AIFF and 'snd ' resources, including System 7 sound files,
* MPEG playback now no longer causes jerky mouse movement,
* Closing the Status window via AppleScript no longer crashes.

SoundApp 2.0 requires the following:

* At least a 68020 or PowerPC-based Macintosh (sorry 68000 users!),
* System 7.0 or greater, and
* Sound Manager 3.1 or greater (3.1 can be obtained from Apple and 3.2
is included in System 7.5.3).

In addition, the following optional items are recommended:

* QuickTime 2.0 or greater for QuickTime support,
* The Drag Manager for drag and drop use in the Play Lists (part of
System 7.5 and later),
* A PowerPC-based Macintosh for MPEG support and better performance.

Please note, I have no plans to support System 6.x, 68000-based Macs,
MPEG on 680x0-based Macs or earlier versions of the Sound Manager,
sorry.

AU A-law (telephony companding)
AU Linear 8bit and 16bit uncompressed
AIFF 8bit and 16bit uncompressed
AIFC mu-law (ULAW)
AIFC A-law (ALAW)
AIFC MACE3:1 8bit compression
AIFC MACE6:1 8bit compression

Mac 'snd ' resources (in all formats supported by AIFF and AIFC
above)
Finder Sound Files (in all formats supported by AIFF and AIFC above)
WAVE 8bit and 16bit uncompressed
FSSD 8bit, mono uncompressed

The PrefRead() fatal Error bug in verion 2.6.1 has been fixed (I hope)
in version 2.6.2.

Version 2.6.1 fixes a bug with using the hack window on some 16 bit
sounds. The audio support has been slightly expanded to be
compatible with the format supported by ConvertMachine. Various
miscellaneous and cosmetic improvements.

I had this problem too. Finally in my case I figured out the reason is that
I installed a minimal system on the mac. The installer minimizes space
requirement by not installing resources for color folders etc. in the
System file. You can resedit them back (look at the icn etc resources)
(risks of course tu muck with the system file) or do a system installation
for your mac or a for "all macs". System update will not install these
resources.

Going along with the posts about performas and Sys 7.5.3,
I have a question. I have read that most of the 5200 and 6200 series
have internal IDE drives. Because of this, one should wipe the
internal drive, and re-format it with version 1.0.4 of
DriveSetup.
Am I correct in this interpretation? I have a Performa
6214, with a 1 Gb drive. Do I have to backup, wipe, and re-format
my drive in order to use 7.5.3? According to what I read from
Apple, if you do not do this, your computer may shut down before it
is finished writing to the disk, which causes obvious problems.

Gee, Jens, I'm glad I'm not the only one who made that mistake. The bad news
is that you have to start over again (virgin 7.5.1 followed by easy install
of the 7.5.3 update). AND get the "Network Software Selector" utility from
the Apple Extras (I believe) folder.

The installer left you with "Classic Appletalk" enabled. The Open Transport
stuff is all there, as you noticed, invisible and with buggered file types.
All you need do afterwards is launch the network selector and ask for OT
instead of Classic. The next reboot switches what is enabled and what is
invisible, and you have an OT-based system.

adaptor. With the switch in the SCSI position, you attach SCSI devices to
the PowerBook. In the Dock position, the PowerBook becomes a "client" hard
drive to a host Mac. You can logically select a SCSI address for the PB's
hard drive. Booting brings up a SCSI icon with the selected ID that bounces
around the PB screen like a screen saver.

I'd have responded to Marcel's post, but I don't know what a ZIP drive
looks like under its skirts, as it were. Does it have one or two SCSI
ports? Are they 25 or 50 pin plugs? Does it have switchable termination?
I understand (I don't know for sure) that a ZIP has a single 50-pin plug.
I dunno if it has switchable termination.

If the ZIP has switchable termination, it is possible to string a host Mac,
ZIP Drive, and PowerBook in a SCSI chain. In addition to the SCSI/Dock for
the PB (or special cable), you need a 1-to-2 Centronics adaptor for the ZIP
drive. One end plugs into the ZIP. It has two 50-pin plugs on the other end
for daisy chaining. APS sells 'em.

Use something like SCSI probe to see what the ZIP's SCSI address is. Set
the PB's logical address to something else (Not 0 or 9, please). Turn
everything off. Start up the ZIP and the PB. Start up the host.

If the ZIP is terminated, you will probably be dead meat. The PB's hard
disk is terminated, too. One terminated device must be at the end of the
chain. At that point you have a choice of the PB *or* the ZIP on the chain.
On the other hand, SCSI is voodoo, and a Mac-ZIP-PB chain *might* work with
all three terminated.

Subject: System 7.5.3 Trouble

About 2 months ago, I updated my OS to system 7.5.3. Immediately after
I tried to used drive setup to update the driver in my Performa 6200
IDE hard drive. I run the program, and it finds my IDE hard drive and
my SCSI CD-rom, but when I select the hard drive, and go to the pull
down menu with update driver, everything except for initialize drive
is greyed out. I am currently using Drive Setup 1.0.5(apple's newest
version) Is there something special I have to do. Does the program
have to be on a seperate disk to use it. I am desperate.
Thank you,
Matt.

Hello French reader friends,

Living in England, I don't know where Apple is at with the update 2.0 for
the 7.5 French system.
Is it available in France?

If it is available, would you know where I can get it. (on CD would be
best)

Thanks in advance for your help.
