Subject: [*] Interfazed
Interfazed is an interactive portfolio presentation that is probably
unlike any other on-screen portfolio you've ever seen. In addition to
showing samples of creative work in graphics and interface design,
Interfazed contains experimental projects intended for you to explore and
consider...
The following items are some of Interfazed's more interesting features:
* Full color graphics, sound and animation
* Custom window designs, never before seen on the Macintosh
* Unusual interface concepts intended to provoke thought about
the future of interface design
* Full screen presentation, regardless of monitor size
One of the most engaging aspects of Interfazed is the use of custom
window technology. While unusual in their designs, all the windows in
this application are actual Macintosh windows which respond as you might
expect them to: click on a window and you can drag it around your
desktop; click outside a window (with the backdrop turned off) and you
will "switch" to the Finder. Even the progress meters are based on
custom window shapes...
Please note that there are two flavors of Interfazed: the PowerMac
version (PPC) and the standard Mac version (680x0). Make sure you
download the appropriate version for your machine. At a bare minimum,
you'll need: a 68030 Macintosh, 5.5 meg.s of free RAM, System 7 and
SoundManager 3.0, but be aware that animation sequences will run fairly
slowly on anything less than a 68040 Macintosh.
Enjoy your exploration of Interfazed, and feel free to send feedback to:

This version of "Kill The Cookie" (1.1) now correctly reports whether or
not the MagicCookie file has been deleted. Thanks to all of the folks
who e-mailed me to let me know and thanks to the suggestions from many
of you. I've tried to make this little applet as functional as possible
so in addition to the regular "Kill The Cookie" applet I've included
another version (1.1.1) that adds one little line of script that will
"quit" your Netscape program. If you use this version, it will make sure
the MagicCookie file is deleted every time you run Netscape. If you have
any questions, please send them to [email protected]. This applet is
freeware. It should cause no problems, but if it does, I'm not
responsible. (You know how these disclaimer go.)
You'll need System 7.5 and Applescript to use this applet.

The enclosed PICT resource is meant to replace PICT resource number
-16506 in the System 7.5 Update file located in the System Folder. You
can accomplish this using ResEdit.
This should work on all Macs running 7.5.x, on any 256 color (or more)
screen, at a minimum resolution of 640x480. Black and white, gray
scale, 16-color and smaller screens are not supported. I don't
anticipate releasing a file for those machines either ... sorry.

no artistic credit for it.
I hope you enjoy.

Subject: [*] Midi Typer 1.0.4
Here's an updated version of Midi Typer. This minor update release
adds a few more MIDI programs to the Open With menu. See documentation
for other details.
Midi Typer is a drag-and-drop utility requiring System 7.0 or greater.
It convinces your system that all those MIDI files you downloaded (or
bought) really are MIDI files. It is smart enough to automatically
distinguish between real MIDI files and Text files (such as 'Read Me'
documentation), so you can just drop the icon of a folder or disk on
Midi Typer, and it will do the rest. You can also use Midi Typer to
change the application that will open your Midi Files.
Midi Typer is small, fast, and intelligent. No flashy graphics.

Subject: [*] NetStripper v3.0F
NetStripper is a small utility that converts Macintosh text files to DOS
text files, DOS and Unix text files to Macintosh text files and can strip
single carriage returns from a text file while changing all double carriage
returns to singles that are *not* deleted. The program operates with a
simple drag-and-drop interface (ie: just drop the files that need to be
processed on to its icon), using modifier keys held down while the program
starts to choose which translation mode is required.
Version 3.0 adds Mac to Un*x translation, and has been completely rewritten
to make use of the Thread Manager (a licensed copy of which is included for
those who need it). It now translates three files at the same time, and
heavy-duty tests show that, on the whole, it is significantly faster than
previous versions. It runs on all Macs and Mac clones running System 7 or
higher. It has been tested and found to run on machines from the SE to the
PowerWave 604/132.
NetStripper v3.0 is a US$10 shareware program, and payment is made via Kagi
Shareware (full details, and the Register utility, are included in the
package).

Subject: [*] NewsWatcher 2.13+jp1 patch
This is a patch program to make Japanese-enabling version
of NewsWatcher 2.13, which was originally written by John
Norstad of Northwestern University. This patchwork is free.
This patch works on the program "NewsWatcher 2.13",
and makes new features as follows.
* Enables it to read and write the articles or messages
in Japanese Kanji characters.
* Properly Wraps and Unwraps the paragraphs including
Kanji characters. Also fill column width is changable.
* Disables the Latin-1 (ISO8859-1 character set) conversion
on 8-bit characters, which was added to 2.XX versions.
* Does not generate its own Message-ID header line in
the original NewsWatcher style by applying extra patch
To run the patched NewsWatcher program properly in displaying
Kanji characters, the following conditions are required;
1. Running KanjiTalk 7, a Japanese localized version of
System 7, or equivalent systems such as with Japanese
Language Kit.
2. Being Kanji font, say "Osaka", installed in "Font" folder
of the system.

Subject: [*] Newton Book Troubleshooting 101
Hey! What's this?
This Newton package / book is intended to help you troubleshoot your
Macintosh computer if it bombs or freezes under System 7.0 through 7.5.3.
It won't help you with a "Sad Mac" on startup problem, won't bring back a
trashed file, and it won't make your boss give you a raise, but it just
might bail you out of a bad situation. This is written with a Macintosh
novice in mind but contains useful information for all levels of Macintosh
users.
This Newton package / book is very closely based on the Troubleshooting 101
DA for the Macintosh by the same author. The Macintosh DA was initially
written for MacMagazine at http://oeonline.com:80/~tomk/MacMagazine/ and
was later distributed to the DDB Needham agency in Dallas. It is a thorough
10-step procedure and contains numbers for some major support companies.
This Newton package / book is provided FREE to anyone who wants it. This
Newton package / book may NOT BE SOLD. However, it may be copied and put on
any Newton or be included with any package of hardware or software so long
as (a) I am notified at the address below (b) the contents of this Newton

Subject: [*] Notadventure II
Notadventure II is a fun-filled text adventure game spoofing Adventure
(Crystal Cave)...it is an unusual game (but it is much easier to get
the crystals). The objective: to get the crystal and get home. The
game will take you all the way home (so if you get killed before you
get home, try it again). It is designed to keep you alive in the first
half. Note that it is really played for humor, and there are many
surprises throughout. (This game is really much easier than Crystal
Cave/Adventure)
This version should run on all Macs from the 512 (pre-Plus) on up. It
was compiled using MS QuickBasic. The source code is gone, so this is
the last version. (The first version ran on the DataGeneral Eclipse).

Subject: [*] Number Aquarium 3.0 Demo
Here is the Number Aquarium 3.0 Demo, a fun way to help youngsters learn the
basics of writing and counting their numbers. Number Aquarium integrates
sound and animation to teach number formation and recognition to early
education students. In the first of two activities, animals of the sea show
how to draw the numbers. For instance, Pamela Penguin demonstrates how to
draw the number four. The child can then use the mouse or other pointing
device (such as the TouchWindow-TM or certain adaptive devices) to draw the
number, formed on screen by IntelliTrace-TM. The second activity emphasizes
counting skills. Each animal presents a number of objects to be counted. As
the child points to each object, Number Aquarium counts along with the child.
This demo version is fully functional, with sounds and animation, but only
contains the numbers 1 through 5.
You have our permission to place the demo on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] StartupFrills v3.5
StartupFrills is an application which allows you to have random events occur
at startup. These events include
* Picking different StartupScreens or PICTs (PICT requires Quicktime)
* Playing different sounds
* Displaying different movies
* Reading out different text files using the Speech Manager
The user can choose whether they want any combination of the above, and can
have StartupFrills step through files in order or choose a file at random each
time. The program is freeware, although a charitable donation is encouraged.
StartupFrills has deliberately been written as an application, rather than as
yet another extension or control panel to clutter your System. To use it,
simply copy it into the Startup Items folder and leave it alone.
v3.5 adds PowerPC-native and fat versions of the application, and also takes
notice of which voice is selected in the Speech control panel.
As well as from the archive, StartupFrills may be obtained directly from its
home pages at http://www.pindar.co.uk/~im/.

Subject: [*] Sun & Moon 3.0 Demo
Here is the Sun and Moon 3.0 Demo, which develops association and visual
discrimination skills. Children find two objects that go together in the
first activity. They point to the picture of the bird and the nest, for
instance, rather than the car or the planet. In an alternate activity,
students see a scene in which there are objects that don't belong. If they
pick out all of the objects, they receive a reward! Sun and Moon encourages
critical thinking, while appealing to children with its colorful graphics and
sound. This demo version is fully functional, with sounds and animation,
but only contains a sampling of the association and discrimination
activities.
You have our permission to place the demo on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Make two separate settings files. Each of them contains the account

and NOT the application file. The settings files can be renamed, or aliased,

We haven't had any apparent problems on several Macs (PB 5300e, Performa
5400, 6100/66 DOS Compatible, IIci), *except* that our "Universal System"
installation is now broken for the IIci. Where before it would happily

it won't.
Does anyone know if there are any Option-Shift-k-whatever back doors in

Subject: General benefits of Fast/Wide SCSI?
I'd like to significantly improve the disk performance on my 120 MHz
PowerComputing machine (a Powermac 8500 clone). While the "feel" of the
machine is fast enough compared to the Quadra 700 I used to have, I
haven't noticed a correspondingly large jump in the time it takes to
boot up, fire off applications and other tasks that hit the disk. It is
faster, but not the 5X or so I was expecting. Since the rest of the
machine specs generally 10X or more of the Q700 (CPU, PCI bus,
interleaved DIMM RAM, 512k L2 cache, etc.), I figure the disk is where
the bottleneck is likely to be. It's probably only 2X the Q700's disk.
I'm considering a Fast/Wide SCSI disk with a PCI accelerator card, but
before I take that expensive a jump, I'd like to hear if others have
done this and what they've experienced. The reviews I've seen all focus
on RAID approaches to FW SCSI and they don't bother comparing to a stock
machine. They also focus on big app performance such as huge Photoshop
manipulations. In my case, I'll be replacing the current boot disk with
the accelerated system as the boot device, so I'm specifically
interested in how the machine will feel in more routine use.
The current drive is a Connor 1080S drive which has sustained I/O rates
of on the order of 3+ MB/s according to the specs. New F/W drives with
7600 rpm motors seem to have specs indicating sustained I/O of 7+ MB/s.
The internal SCSI is fast SCSI2 with a 10MB/s throughput, but I don't
know if I trust its ability to even handle 7+, which seems too close to
the theoretical limit of 10. F/W SCSI3 cards supposedly handle up to
40MB/s which is well beyond the sustained rate of current drives, but
the SCSI3 F/W drives claim they can dump their caches at this rate.
So, has anyone else tried this sort of setup? Did it meet your
expectations in terms of generally speeding your machine up?

FreePPP gets you on the telephone line. On the other side there is a modem
as well, which is connected to some on-line computer (not nescessarily the
computer with your account) say host-a. Your mail account runs on host-b.
Then set up freePPP to dial host-a, with your password/account being
password-a/[email protected] . Set up MacTCP or tcp/IP to use PPP
rather than ethernet or appletalk. Set up Eudora with tcp/ip communications
(settings menu). Your login name will be [email protected], with the
appropriate password. Up and go.
That is, the freePPP configuration might get at you, but in the end you
will succeed.

Subject: MacTerminal
I have been searching for terminal emulation software for my PB520c. I have
tried about a dozen commercial demos and shareware programs. Only a couple
actually do half the job. During my "research", I have come upon references
to an Apple program called MacTerminal. Does Apple still have this
software, and is it viable? Can I get a demo?
Here's the scoop:
I connect to a unix box through a direct connection (not a dialup) plugged
into my modem/printer serial port (remember-this is a PB520c
. The unix
box runs a program which starts up as soon as I log into unix. It is this
last part that the demos fail. They get me "talking" to Unix OS, but not
the program run on unix.
The problem may be setting the terminal emulation. The program on the unix
side allows me to set my station to several types of machines. Three are
terminals, I believe. Wyse 99, NCR 2900, ADDS 4000/160 (3000). I have no
experience with these terminals. The programs I have tried on my PB don't
have settings for them.
Will MacTerminal (or something else) work?
Programs that will talk to unix:
MacLayers v1.30
MacToPic +=81
Black Night 1.0.5
Programs that will not talk to unix:
PowerConnect
ProTERM
Terminal 2.2
Termulator 2.03

Subject: Network Wishlist Item: Macs for W4WG
Is there any obvious reason why no one has written a Mac client for
"Microsoft" networks, i.e., what was called "Windows for Workgroups"
prior to the debut of Windows95? In a mixed-platform environment that's
heavily dominated by Wintel boxes, the temptation is for them to use
W4WG / MS networking and let us Mac perverts do without network or
run SoftWindows or rely on sneakernet or sell our Macs and buy PCs.
Wouldn't it be a relatively simple matter to support the "NetBEUI"
protocol and something similar to PC Exchange to cross-map the Mac
HFS to the directory structure protocols used by PC? I mean, at least
enough so for it to pay for itself?
PS--working back the other direction, does anyone have familiarity with
"Personal MacLan Connect", which is a PC client software + hardware
card for adding PCs to an AppleTalk connection? Specifically, does it
support EtherTalk AppleTalk, or only LocalTalk? (the PCs already have
Ethernet thin coax cards in them). And if so, any reason more than
one protocol couldn't be supported, i.e., install one copy of Personal
MacLan on the PC that's essentially the server, and let it serve to PCs
via NetBEUI (Windows for Workgroups) and to Macs via AppleTalk?

Kanji characters, the following conditions are required;
1. Running KanjiTalk 7, a Japanese localized version of
System 7, or equivalent systems such as with Japanese
Language Kit.
2. Being Kanji font, say "Osaka", installed in "Font" folder
of the system.

Notadventure II is a fun-filled text adventure game spoofing Adventure
(Crystal Cave)...it is an unusual game (but it is much easier to get

half. Note that it is really played for humor, and there are many
surprises throughout. (This game is really much easier than Crystal
Cave/Adventure)

Subject: [*] StartupFrills v3.5
StartupFrills is an application which allows you to have random events occur
at startup. These events include
* Picking different StartupScreens or PICTs (PICT requires Quicktime)
* Playing different sounds
* Displaying different movies
As well as from the archive, StartupFrills may be obtained directly from its
home pages at http://www.pindar.co.uk/~im/.

which stock copies of Sword Dream usually keep the French version, too. For
more info of Sword Dream, point your browser to
http://www.comenius.com/dream/
Dream 1.7.1 is accelerated for Power Macintosh and sports a full-length
original soundtrack. It's a thoughful game of magic and wonder, with
beautiful 256-color graphics and a real, easy to use Mac interface.
If you already own Sword Dream, you can find and download an updater,
smaller in size. If you didn't try Dream before, be certain to download one
or more scenarios, too. We suggest you start from "Spirit of Darkness".

Make two separate settings files. Each of them contains the account
she wishes to connect to, and their passwords. Open the settings files,
and NOT the application file. The settings files can be renamed, or aliased,
and launched from the apple menu or wherever. If the two settings files
are in different folders, they will keep different mailboxes. If they are
in the same folder, they should still keep their own passwords, but end up
sharing the same IN mailbox, and any other mailboxes she uses.

We haven't had any apparent problems on several Macs (PB 5300e, Performa
5400, 6100/66 DOS Compatible, IIci), *except* that our "Universal System"
installation is now broken for the IIci. Where before it would happily
boot the IIci from the PB, and from any one of several external HD's, now
it won't.
Does anyone know if there are any Option-Shift-k-whatever back doors in
the R2 Installer, for getting another Universal System folder?

Better still, use freePPP 2.5rf and select more info from file menu &

Subject: MacTerminal
I have been searching for terminal emulation software for my PB520c. I have
tried about a dozen commercial demos and shareware programs. Only a couple
actually do half the job. During my "research", I have come upon references
to an Apple program called MacTerminal. Does Apple still have this
software, and is it viable? Can I get a demo?
Here's the scoop:
I connect to a unix box through a direct connection (not a dialup) plugged
into my modem/printer serial port (remember-this is a PB520c
box runs a program which starts up as soon as I log into unix. It is this
last part that the demos fail.
