Mike,
Give "SoundEffects," by Alberto Ricci, a shot! It's a great, $15
shareware program that can sample and edit at up to 16-bit/44.1kHz. It
should be available at info-mac, but I'll put it up on my site for you,
or anyone who would like it. It'll be up later this afternoon in the
Utility section. The URL is in the sig.
If you're planning on sampling from CD's, don't lose quality by recording
it! Use a util called "GrabAudio" which digitally samples any track, or
portion of a track you specify, straight from the CD and will put it into
a snd file for you to use in editing.
Hope that helps you out!

In Info-Mac Digest V14 #131, John Haagen wonders if Disinfectant prevented
him from copying his files.
I am no expert on Disinfectant, but I do not believe that it alters the
protection bit on files. Furthermore, document files are not the files
that are typically infected with viridae (a few exceptions - like the
Microsoft macro virus). In any case, I have not had any trouble copying my
files to Syquest 44 mb removable drives or to other volumes on the network.
This may mean that your problem lies elsewhere.

Subject: Mac to windoze NT network
Greetings from not-so-sunny Spain,
I've been lurking here for a while now and I've got to say I love you all.
I was hoping you could help me show off the Mac to my archrival (i.e.
Windows rules guy) in the company. Below is the message he sent me. Which
is a start because we NEVER talk accept to yell at each other at the
comapny picnics.
Go ahead, tell all, I promise I'll summarise
Quote begins here:
I have an important question. My Microsoft books are of no help. What
does one need to do to attach a Macintosh computer to an Microsoft (NT,
WFW,etc) Network? I do not of course expect to run Windows apps (though I
could with SoftWindows).
The Mac has a scanner attached. We wish the scanned image (TIF, PCX,
etc.) to be saved directly to the NT server drive. This way the image can
be manipulated conveniently using Photoshop on the NT server/workstation.=
=20
The image would also be available to all the other work stations for
printing, view, etc. NT 3.51accepts long name conventions. But to keep
things simple, short 8.3 file names will be used. I know that adapters
exist that convert mac AAUI connections to 10baseT. So the physical
conection can be made. But how can one get the Mac to possess Microsoft
client software, and configure it to log on to an NT or WFW machine? Is
the softwar on the Mac to begin with? Where would I get it?

Subject: Modem for a Classic
First of all, I've ran System 7.01 on a Classic with 4Meg for about 4
years. No problem whatsoever. (Don't use Photoshop
Now, to answer your question: modems don't care about the OS one bit, as
long as they can receive and send signals to a serial port (the
printer/modem port) on your Classic. Only software cares about the OS.
It might very well be that the software that comes with a certain modem
doesn't go under System 6. This, however, shouldn't be any problem.
I've owned (and connected to Macs) a number of modems, and none were
especially designed for the Mac. None of them ever came with Mac
software.
All the software you could ever want is available as either free or
shareware. Unfortunately, more and more software tends to require system
7. I suspect that a simple terminal emulation program would be available
for system 6 (does ZTerm work under sys6?).
My advice: Grade your machine up to system 7.0 (available from Apple's
website), buy a cheap modem, and get the software from the net.
Cheers,
Tobias

Subject: RAM Doubler - benefits?
Hello! I recently purchased a Performa 6116CD, which came with 8 MB
RAM and System 7.5.1. Since System 7.5 takes so much memory, many
applications (Claris Works, Netscape, etc.) will not run with only 8
MB of RAM, so I have been using Virtual Memory. That stinks! It is
terribly slow, but it does let me run larger applications.
My question is this - What does RAM Doubler do (if anything)
differently from using VM? I know it is a very popular application,
so it must work fairly well. It is definitely cheaper than buying
more RAM, but does it slow down your system as badly as virtual
memory does?
I can get RAM Doubler for about $50, or buy another 8 MB of "real"
RAM for about $100. Is the savings worth it? I don't want to buy
RAM Doubler and find that it is no better than what I have!
Thanks for your help!

[Bob, RAM Doubler is indeed a great product. Much faster than traditional VM.
Naturally, if you can get both RAM Doubler *and* the extra 8 Megs go for it.

Subject: Stubborn ftp configuration problem
Please help!!
I am having a vexing problem. I have a web page and need to set up
a related ftp directory. My provider has created the directory, and I
have a test page set up, but the link to the ftp directory does not
work, at least for me. And if I type the ftp URL, the directory will
not load. In both cases, the transfer hangs indefinitely at 31 bytes.
Transfers from Fetch or the unix shell work, but that's not what I
need to do.
System info: Centris 650, 24 megs ram, Ram doubler, Sys 7.5.3,
Netscape 2.02.
However, my sysadmin has no trouble loading the ftp directory or
files...though he is on a Windows machine. And to make it even
stranger, it actually worked just fine *just once*, and then stopped
working.
Is this a configuration problem with my provider or with my system?
Here are the URLs:
http://www2.dgsys.com/~trnutr/Misc/secretbeta.html
Bad link is in sentence:
Here is a _test link_ for the dgs ftp account.
ftp://ftp.dgsys.com/pub/trnutr/molecules/
Oh yes, I have tried rebooting, zapping my PRAM, reinstalling
Netscape, purging the cache, expiring all links, changing my
connect speed, and changing my modem init string.
I would very much appreciate something to resolve this. I am
baffled.

Subject: Disinfectant & copy protection
In Info-Mac Digest V14 #131, John Haagen wonders if Disinfectant prevented
him from copying his files.
I am no expert on Disinfectant, but I do not believe that it alters the
protection bit on files. Furthermore, document files are not the files
that are typically infected with viridae (a few exceptions - like the
Microsoft macro virus). In any case, I have not had any trouble copying my
files to Syquest 44 mb removable drives or to other volumes on the network.
This may mean that your problem lies elsewhere.

Subject: Espy Sans TT
Dear Info-Mackers:
Have been wandering the web forever, in search of an honest man AND the
legendary Espy Sans font (would trade the honest man for the font in a
heartbeat).
Some Usenet gossip suggest that the font is available in the Info-Mac
archives. This is the full font (printable), not just bitmap in two
sizes that comes with, e.g., Aaron.
Can you advise?
Thanks.
Philip

Use amplified external speakers which have an external volume control.
Set the volume settings in the Sound control panel to maximum, and use
the speakers' volume control to adjust the volume. -Bob Stern

Subject: ISKM Web site (Q)
Dear Digest Readers,
Anybody know what happened to the Internet Starter Kit for the Macintosh
web site? It used to be at http://www.mcp.com/hayden/iskm/mac.html.
Now mcp.com appears to be an invalid DNS.
Any clues as to where it moved to? Or is it just busy?
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Where would I get it?
end;
TIA,
Scot Andrews

Cheers,
Tobias

Subject: PowerMac 9500 Startup Chime TOO LOUD!!!
I use a PowerMac 9500/132 with an interesting problem. The built-in
speaker is only about 50% as loud as in my old Quadra, so I use a set
of Bose Roommate speakers. Unfortunately, the 9500's volume control
seemingly does not affect the startup chime. With the Bose speakers,
the startup chime nearly lifts the roof off the apartment building when
it starts up... despite my "respectable" volume settings for both
normal volume and alert volume. Does anyone know a solution, or do I
have to live with the little teeny speaker that's built in?

I am
baffled.
Paul
