Hi all,
Guess what!? That last digest you read wasn't put together by me! We've got
a new guy learning the ropes -- Mike O'Brian. He'll be helping out putting the
digest together, with me. Hopefully that will lighten my load enough to do
some more work on our new AOL server (info-mac.org).
Welcome to Mike!
Cheers,
Gordon.

Subject: 16-bit, 44kHz audio editing

I would like to record from audio tapes, CDs, microphone, and other such
equipment high-quality (16-bit stereo at 44kHz) sound on my PowerMac 7100/80
(non-AV model), edit the sampled sound on the computer, then record the
finished product on tape for use on my radio show at our campus station.
Since the station has little money and my work there is purely as a
volunteer, I'd like to do this at the lowest cost possible.

Is there any shareware or freeware out there that can do 16-bit stereo
recording and editing at 44 kHz? I've tried out Sample Editor, SoundApp,
Sound Editor, and Sound Machine, but have only been able to work with 8-bit
mono sound at 22 kHz so far and all recordings (even from my internal CD-ROM)
have included lots of background noise (is this to be expected?). Is there a
low-cost solution to this problem? Or will I have to shell out a couple of
hundred dollars for Sound Edit 16, Alchemy, or some other professional
editing software? Will such commercial packages solve my problem?

Thanks for your help. Please reply directly to me and I'll summarize to the
list.

In ChemDraw, change the preferences (under the file menu) to include
postscript and ChemDraw Laser prep. Then copy the structure into Word.
This helps if you are losing certain types of structural features
(especially "wavy" bonds). Also, Word sometimes screws up when importing
ChemDraw structures. Try going into the finder first, before pasting.
Also, does he have Ego for Word? This should be on the original ChemDraw
disks. It goes in the Word Commands file and allows you to click on a
drawing in Word and edit it directly via ChemDraw. However, I've found
it doesn't work on every Mac.

ChemDraw has various settings to do with how pictures are exported to
other applications and it sounds like one of these has been changed. Make
sure the "Include PostScript" setting is off and try turning "Optimise for
high-resolution QuickDraw printing" on if it isn't already. (I think these
are in Preferences, or possibly Drawing settings.) Also worth checking is
that he doesn't have both PostScript and TrueType versions of the same
font (I believe the Personal LW is a Quickdraw printer not PostScript, so
he should use only the TrueType fonts).

If this doesn't work, try saving as a PICT file from ChemDraw and use the
Insert Picture command to place the picture in Word.

TO: The Info-Mac Moderators

I have just read your notes on the use of various non commercial virus
programs. I have been using Disinfectant and encountered a very perplexing
problem. I presume that the way Disinfectant Extension protects files from
virus infection is to set the "protected" bit. I recently purchased a
SyQuest EZ drive and when I tried to copy my document files to the SyQuest,
I got a dialog box stating that the files could not be moved because of
copy protection. I checked the file attributes and discovered that the
protected bit had been set on every file on my hard disk. The only way I
could remove the protection was to open the application that created the
document and save it to another file name.

I admit that this is very secure protection, but it is a real pain because
I can not finder copy documents to any other media! Do you know if there
is a way to unprotect document files without going through the procedure
described above? I have thousands of files and do not want to spend the
time to resave every one. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks,

John Haagen

Subject: Hard disk/6100 DOS

I have two questions:

Firstly, I remember there was a program/init which allowed the unused
space whcih occurs on an Apple-formatted hard-disk to be used as an
extra partition, without requiring reformatting of the whole disk. Can
anyone tell me the name and/or source of it?

Secondly, is anyone aware of, or even running, a site covering the
6100 DOS compatible? I would appreciate some help on the Windows side
to ensure that my set-up (not factory installed) is working at its
most efficient. Also, what are the possibilities of Apple actually
exploiting the built-in possibilities of this machine, such as the
removable ROM card (ideal way to improve the emulator I would have
thought), etc.

Cheers to all, and thanks for any help,

One suggestion is that when software is installed, it produce a
installation history that is placed in a new folder (like the preferences
folder, but for insallation histories). If the format were standard, then
there could be a de-installer utility that would remove everything in the
history.

Subject: Inverted Video extension?

Hello,

I recently upgraded a visually impaired client's SE (with a hardware video
magnification board) to System 7.1 (previously 6.0.8) to facilitate Net
access. Upon completing the migration, it became clear an extension the
client used to invert the video to improve legebility was not compatible
with 7. My client relies upon inverted video to make out words and shapes,
so he really needs it back.

Apple's Close View control panel has such a feature, but due to the
hardware magnification equipment (the main reason he has not upgraded his
machine) using Close View results in ugly draw errors. The question is as
follows: does anyone know of a simple extension or control panel which
works on a SE and is compatible with 7 which will invert video output?

I agree that the growing complexity of the System Folder (primarily the
INIT and extensions mechanisms) is the primary source of most of
aggravations I have with my macintoshes. Besides the conflicts it has led
to boot times well over that of an 8 MHz SE with System 5 on the latest
PowerPC models. Apple appears to be rolling many extensions into the
system and has introduced voluntary mechanisms such as showing an Icon at
startup to allow users to see what extensions are loading. However, I
would prefer if there was a built in control panel like the extensions

Subject: PowerMac 9500 Startup Chime TOO LOUD!!!

I use a PowerMac 9500/132 with an interesting problem. The built-in
speaker is only about 50% as loud as in my old Quadra, so I use a set
of Bose Roommate speakers. Unfortunately, the 9500's volume control
seemingly does not affect the startup chime. With the Bose speakers,
the startup chime nearly lifts the roof off the apartment building when
it starts up... despite my "respectable" volume settings for both
normal volume and alert volume. Does anyone know a solution, or do I
have to live with the little teeny speaker that's built in?

ChemDraw Plus 3.0 is ancient and should not be used under any circumstances
nowadays. There is a free update to version 3.1, and the current version is
3.5.1. Neither of these versions have any problems of the type described.

Subject: State of Info-Mac

Hello everyone!

In the last few weeks, I noticed that the Info-Mac archive has been updated
in quite unusal intervals. There are days with just one or two files being
made accessible, and other days when the number of new files is closer to 65.

A colleague of mine is a shareware author, and more than two weeks ago
he uploaded another submission to ,
waiting for it to be put on the server. And there it still sits, as he
found out when he tried to upload it again, assuming that it had gone missing.
The server message he got back was that the file can't be overwritten.

My question is: What's up with Info-Mac? It seems to me that the Info-Mac
volunteers can no longer handle all the work, so the archive has run into
the problems mentioned above.

What can we users of this great (thanks a lot to all volunteers) Mac archive
do to help out with the maintaining? I see several possibilities, please
comment:

1. Get a sponsor (TidBITS has done it before), so maybe you can afford a
staffer for the archive.
2. Look out for new volunteers who could help with maintainance work.
3. Collect licensing fees from major mirrors of the Info-Mac archive, i.e.
AOL (They get the best Mac shareware archive on the planet for free, don't
they?)
4. Or: why not collect an upload fee from shareware authors? My colleague
for example would be happy to contribute financially if on the other hand
the Info-Mac archive was upgraded.

If you suffer from work overload, dear Info-Mac volunteers, please tell us
so that all users may help to do someting about it.

I send this message to the Digest so as to see what others think about the
current state of Info-Mac.

I'd really appreciate your comments.

Ciao,

Gregor Rothfuss

[email protected]

P.S. Whatever the state of the Info-Mac is, it's still the best. However, it
could even become better.

[Hi,
The main problem is one of very bad timing. Igor left and Demitri came on
board. Unfortunately, he became a graduate student at the same time. This
meant he never had a long couple of days to get the archiving scripts working
correctly. Thus, it takes a long time to do the uploads. Bummer. His
finals are over, but he was called out of town suddenly. He will be back on
the job on Weds, I think.
To tell the truth, I didn't realize how many people depend upon Info-Mac for
software (shareware) distribution. Igor's unfailing 24 hour turn around
made it a viable option. We (the moderators) are considering
making that a standard policy at the moment. This would require us to have
at least one more person doing the archiving, and a real change in the way
the scripts work. None of this discussion can really commence until Demitri
returns. If I had the time, I would clear out the backlog myself (I used to
do the archiving several years ago).
Now, to your points.
1. We are getting sponsors. AOL has already donated a machine and PHT donates
some $$ and the www info-mac machine in return for using the info-mac name on
their CDs. We are planning on getting ourselves incorporated (it is cheap),
and we'll then be able to get Apple to give us things like internet servers
and the like. :-) Well I don't know they will do that, but I can hope.
2. We do watch out for new folks. As you can see from the top of the digest,
we just picked up Mike. It may well be that Demitri goes out looking for
someone to help him out. We don't want to expand too fast, though. :-)
3. The way we do mirrors is as follows. If you are making money because you
are mirroring our software (it adds value to your service) then we ask for
some sort of donation. AOL falls under this -- they have given us a new
server (which will be able to fill the mirrors better that poor old sumex
can). PHT too. Most mirrors are free.
4. Interesting idea, however, I would really like to remain free if we can.
I don't look at info-mac as a money making venture -- it is more something we
can do for the Mac; ya'll have answered lots of my questions in the past.
It is also a welcome releif from my real job (particle physics) which can
get pretty stressful. Also moving to a model where we hired people to
do the archving is a very different bussiness model, and not one I'm entirely
comfortable with. I think, at the moment, there are enough people out there
willing to donate some of their time to us. Heck, we have been, on one or
two occasions, approached by companies willing to donate some of their time
to us. I think we will make it.

We are no more happy than you with the current upload problem, and we are doing
our best to solve it! Really! Every email message you guys send us
complaining about it goes right to Demitri's personal mailbox (instead of
his info-mac one), so he is very aware of it. :-)

-Gordon

p.s. No, I don't have a spell checker attached to this editor. It runs in
the family: my mother, an english prof, has a tough time too: she just takes
