Subject: [*] AliasPalette 1.2.5

"AliasPalette" is a utility program that helps you create alias files
just by dragging and dropping.

I can easily make an alias using the "Make Alias" item of the Finder's
"File" menu. I feel, however, a couple of inconvenient points.

1) I can create an alias only at the same place of the original item.
2) Finder always adds "alias" suffix to the alias file name.

I don't think it makes sense to create an alias at the original location.
I drag it into the target folder in which the alias should reside.
At that time, I think the "alias" suffix is unnecessary and edit its
name to the original one. I felt it annoying and I wanted some shortcut
such procedures. That was the reason "AliasPalette" was born.

There are many guys, however, who have thought same things and Apple
Computer itself had prepared the solution in secret. Using this
hidden function, you can make aliases just by dragging an icon while
holding a control key. There are several extensions that reveal this
secret. I've already gotten the solution exactly I want.

Changes made in this version:
1) Fixed a problem that an application made in a different volume
would not accept proper dragging and dropping.
Changed a method of adding custom icon from asking Finder to doing
AliasPalette itself.
2) According to this change, the process will not change to Finder
when creating an alias.
3) Fixed a bug that causes a bus error on several kinds of
Macintoshes.

AliasPalette 1.2.5 is freeware and distrubuted as fat binary.
It requires System 7.5 or greater, scriptable Finder, 68020 or
greater 68K CPU or PowerPC.

Enjoy.

AliasPalette can be freely included in the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

This version fixes bugs, one of which would significantly slow down
copybit operations after fading the monitor.

This is a library of screen fading operations which can be used to make
your games more professional looking. Not only does the clut_fade
library let you fade to and from black, but it also provides routines to
fade to and from a specific color or a specific clut. It also provides
some control over which monitors are faded. Demo application, library,

Subject: [*] Coloring Book 3.2 Fun Educational Software for Children

Coloring Book 3.2 is an upgrade to the very popular Coloring Book 3.0.
Now in version 3.2 children can paste in their own draw style graphics and
color
their own pictures. Animations are automatically added to randomly
selected objects in the child's drawing.

Coloring Book 3.2 is a multimedia activity book for pre-K to elementary
level children. Coloring Book goes far beyond the typical coloring
program to include many surprising and fun animations and sound effects.
Coloring Book offers many avenues for creative play. Version 3.0 earned
rave reviews from BMUG, The Washington Apple Pi, and most importantly
delighted parents, grandparents and children. Version 3.0 now uses the
Mac Speech Manager to add personalized encouragements and greetings to
many of the pages. Coloring Book 3.2 now has Story Pages in which short
stories are presented to the children a line at a time in scrambled
form. The children point and click to read the words and unscramble the
story. Older children and adults can create new stories to be presented
in the interactive scrambled form. Coloring Book is now Modular. The base
program has lots to do and stands alone, but it may be easily enhanced
with add on New Pages Modules. There is even an option to receive an
electronic Subscription to Coloring Book.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Client 2.1

The CommuniGator application is the client part of the CommuniGate integrated
messaging system. It allows you to work with all your messages: e-mail, fax,
voice, pager, etc.

You can use it on the same computer the CommuniGate server is installed on,
and you can install and use it on other computers connected to the server via
network.

The CommuniGate User Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application as your messaging environment. It provides information about:
- message composing;
- address books;
- mailboxes;
- operations on messages;
- miscellaneous CommuniGator features;

CommuniGator is used to manage the CommuniGate Server, too: to configure the
server itself or the modules it runs, to control the modules and their queues,
etc. The CommuniGate System Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application to maintain your CommuniGate Server.

See the CommuniGate Installation Manual for installation instructions.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxSender 2.1 - API!

CommuniGate FaxSender print driver 2.1

FaxSender is a print (Chooser) driver to use with the CommuniGate System. It
employs the same Address Books panel as the CommuniGator application, and it
can be used with any application that supports printing. When "FaxSender" is
selected in the Chooser, using the Print command in any application results
in "printing" of the open document on a remote fax machine.

There are two versions of the print driver: a non-networkable (FaxSender) and
a networkable one (FaxSender Network). If you plan to send faxes from the same
computer that runs the CommuniGate Server, you should install the FaxSender
driver on that computer. Install the FaxSender Network on all other computers
on your network.

The latest version of the FaxSender can be found at:

Subject: [*] Cube Strategy v2.3

The goal of the game is to complete more cubes than your opponent. The
game board is made up of a few to hundreds of potential cubes. Players
take turns setting surfaces in the vertical, horizontal, and in the
third dimension relative to the other two. If a player's surface
completes the six sides of a cube, its claimed by the player's mark in
the cube. Completing a cube also gives the player another turn.

You can play against a human opponent, or the computer.

Various adjustments can be made, such as zooming the board in or out,
changing the color identifying the player's moves, whether a
character, picture or pattern is used to claim a cube, maximum time
per move, et cetera.

Subject: [*] Gradekeeper 4.2

Gradekeeper is the answer for teachers who need a powerful Macintosh
gradebook program which is easy to learn and use. Gradekeeper has the
features teachers need:

* Use semesters, trimesters, quarters, or six-week terms
* Assign letter grades using their own letter grade cutoffs
* Compute grades using total points earned or category weights
* Record scores for 48 students on 54 assignments in each term
* Excuse any assignment, or drop the worst score in any category
* Final exams may contribute to the term, semester, or final grade
* Provides a variety of reports to keep students and parents informed

Gradekeeper works just like a paper gradebook. Teachers can enter students,
assignments, and scores by simply clicking and typing. Gradekeeper does the
rest. And help is never far away. An extensive user's guide is built into the
program. There is also complete balloon help.

Gradekeeper is distributed as shareware. Teachers can try Gradekeeper for 30
days. If they decide to continue using it, they are expected to pay a
registration fee of $20 for individuals or $100 for a site license.

Please include Gradekeeper on any CD-ROMs which you distribute.

Gradekeeper requires a Macintosh computer running System 7 or later. For more

Hidden Finder Features
by Richard Burgess

This control panel performs the exactly same the same function as the
"Secret Finder Features" extension except that it is user-configurable
(Personally, I like the Finder Zooms)

Beginning with Finder 7.5.4-System 7.5.2. and up-Apple added a couple of
features to the Finder, but did not enable them, apparantly for want of
testing. They are:

Control-Drag an item to make an alias to it
Command-R to Reveal the original item of an alias
Command-Delete Moves selection to the Trash
Enable/Disable the zoom rectangles when opening/closing windows and gridding

To enable these features, just drag Hidden Finder Features to the control
panels folder and open it. The options you enable take effect immediately,
no need to restart.

This control panel does not install any conflict-inducing patches, it
simply enables features that were already in the Finder.

Subject: [*] HTML Form Parser 1.0b3

HTML Form Parser is a utility to parse the output of HTML forms. You would
get the output mailed to you, for example, and the extension will parse all
the nasty little ASCII codes for non-alpha characters into characters.

I use it in combination with Eudora. If I get just one message, I copy it
>From Eudora and run the Parser on it. If there are several, I save them to
one text file, then open it in BBEdit and run the Parser on the file.

With the new versions, you could use Frontier or AppleScript to
automatically parse any message whose subject is "Form Posted from
Mozilla", or have your web server itself call a cgi script that did the
parsing.

There are three versions of the parser.
* The BBEdit Extension allows you to run the parser from the Extensions
menu in BBEdit. It will operate on the selection in the frontmost
window (if there is a window with a selection), on the entire window's
text (if there is no selection), or on the clipboard (if there is no
window), and put the results in a new, untitled window.
* The XFCN allows you to parse text from within any platform that
understands the XCMD/XFCN architecture. As of right now, this includes
at least HyperCard, 4th Dimension, UserLand Frontier, MicroPhone Pro,
and a host of others.
* The Scripting Addition version allows you to parse text from within an
AppleScript. This version actually just uses the XFCN version with the
XCMD Adapter Scripting Addition, which I got from the MacOS SDK CD.

This software may be distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public
License (which should have been included in this distribution).

For any information on the extensions, their author, or any of PLR
Software's other products and services, you may contact me at any of the

* Tracking session times and cumulative use time by day and month.
* Ability to enter complex session rate structures and automatically
estimate session
and cumulative costs by day or month.
* Ability to count down time remaining on either prepaid hours or hours
charged at a
flate rate.
* Optional Log file documenting session and cumulative times and estimated
costs.
* Optionally compute session times by rounding up to the nearest minute.
Some online
services seem to compute times this way. You can check it yourself.
* Allows automatic connection via PPP, SLIP, or operation as a manual timer.
* Allows multiple timers with individual settings. You can keep track of
use of
multiple providers conveniently. Each can have it's own log file.
* Compatibility with Open Transport when used with FreePPP.

Internet Logger requires System 7.0 or later.

This release is a substantial upgrade. Many more complex rate
structures can now be entered including support for many european
telephone services.

Timers created with version 1.x are not compatible with version 2.0.
Do not try to open Timers created with version 1.x. Instead, keep
version 2.0 in its own folder and create new timers using version 2.0.
You may continue to use v. 1.x simultaneously if you need to time two
things at once.

Thank you,
Eric Preston

Subject: [*] Ismini Key KCHR

I wrote the Ismini Key KCHR to rationalize (for my US keyboard) typing
diacritical marks in Ismini font. By using "option-dead-keys" to
generate the marks (to which US users are already accustumed for
putting French, Spanish, and German accents on letters), keyboard
works otherwise normally if you forget to switch back to the US
keyboard. Much easier than using KeyCaps or PopChar with Ismini.

ISO Issue#13 Released

And on to all of the good stuff you have been waiting for. This
archive is a hefty one. Weighing in at 700+K you will find a lot of
good stuff in this ISO release. We're still supporting 2.0 and have
also gone 3.0!

First off, we've got the ISO 3.0 Browser ready and usable. We have
left this one open and you will find many super new tricks that take
FM3 to the max. Oh, and the articles are good too!

We cover a lot of AppleScripting in this issue. Bob Cusick of
Clickware brings you two articles about learning some ins and outs of
using FileMaker and AppleScript on the Macintosh. And we back that up
with even MORE information about FileMaker and AppleScript.

You'll find some good information about what is going on in the world
of FileMaker and ISO as well as some grudges that ISO has against the
recently announce FileMaker Challenge by Claris Corp.

An ISO reader writes in with an article about converting files from
2.0. And we tease you with some information on setting up user stored
searches that you can select from popup menus and perform frequently.

All this and tons more that we'll let you read for yourself.

FileMaker ISO is an I&I production. You can find ISO on all of the
major online services as well as the Internet. ISO offers two forms of
subscriptions. Our freebie version and our power packed

Subject: [*] NoPowerOffKey extension 1.2

This extension disables the keyboard power key from being used to turn off
a Macintosh. This replaces the version submitted 25 March 1996.

Starting with System 7.5, you can turn off power by pressing the power key,
just as you turn on the Macintosh by pressing the power key. This behavior
isn't appropriate for some classroom or kiosk settings. Therefore, this
extension exists. Drop it into your system folder and restart.

Version 1.2 fixes a minor concern, removes one line of assembly, and adds a
Finder help string, so that turning on balloon help and pointing at this
extension explains what the extension does. (Technogeek for "minor
concern"; my definition of the UniversalProcPtr for the PowerOff gestalt
function didn't include space for a return code. I was using a prerelease
of the System 7.5.3 tech note. It shouldn't have caused any problems, but
I'm being anal.)

I just made the jump from System 6.0.8 on a Mac SE to System 7.5.3 on a

1. Can I continue to use Gatekeeper, Gatekeeper Aid and Disinfectant INIT
for virus protection or do I need to switch to a commercial product.
Also, I have noticed that under System 7.5.3 Gatekeeper frequently puts
up an alert when I do something as innocent as opening a control panel

2. Can I use the version of Adobe Type Manager which comes with QuickDraw GX
without having Quickdraw GX installed?

3. Apple doesn't supply bitmap fonts for the italic, bold and bold-italic
versions of the fonts like Times, Helvetica, Palatino, etc. Can I simply
replace the Apple bitmap fonts with the Adobe versions, which have italic,
bold and bold-italic, so I can see true italics on the screen instead of
the ugly pseudo-italics?

Lock Font is installed by Symantec's Anti-Virus (SAM) so your password
doesn't show up when you type it in.... pretty sloppy way of doing it if
you ask me. You can ditch it if you aren't the paranoid type, and of
course, you can always use Disinfectant.

Subject: Black days of Batteries

It seems that all Performas 475 and Quadras 605 manufactured two years ago
are suffering of the same problem: dead batteries.

I live in Brazil, and Quadra 605 was introduced here in 1994, as the
cheapper Mac ever. Success of sales! Now, two years later, dealers are
crammed of service orders for dead macs with the same symptoms: no boot, no
video signal, no HD movements, just the startup tune and nothing more. A
fast toggle of the power switch (sometimes) brings life back to the mac,
only to show that date and time are lost, 32bit addressing (in some
Systems) is off, mouse speed and other configurations also were reset.

The strange is that this battery is the same used with all desktop models,
and I know very old macs (IIci, Centris 650, etc) that never had such
problem until now. To my surprise, it's not rechargeable! All PeeCees I
know have rechargeable batteries to maintain the CMOS settings while the
computer is off.

The first thought I have is that Apple did a serious mistake in Performa
475 and Quadra 605 projects, that's draining battery charge too fast. It
seems that everyone that got such models recently should stock one of those
batteries.

By the way, you can find this battery (Lithium battery, without leads -
part number 742-0011-825) at any Mac dealer. I got several of them at
PowerCity ([email protected]).

Subject: How apple can help us figure out the system folder

Hi,
I think this fantasy of Apple cleaning up the system folder is, well,
misplaced. And with shared libraries comming into their own now, it is only
going to get worse -- heading for the situation windows users have to contend
with (hopefully not as bad). However, it would be nice to know what every
file is/does/why I need it.

It occurs to me there are at least two things that Apple could do. First
off, they already have a place to associate comments with items: the
"Get Info" comments. Now that they aren't lost when you do a desktop rebuild,
they are a valid method of attaching info to files. Imagine if the system
updater attached commants to every file in the system folder that apple knew
about? Wow. And please make them comments that the regular joe can
understand (not: needed for open transport... joe will go: what the heck
is open transport?).

The second thing they could do is use the web. As most of you know, each
file has two small tags of information attached to them: file type and
creator. Why not create a dropplet application that will use Netscape
(or whatever Internet Config specifies) to generate a serach URL to a
database. Boom. Up pops your web browser with detailed infomation about
the extension. Why stop there? Why not every app in apple's creator
database? Then move onto the big time -- how about indexing all the files
in the archives in info-mac!? Imagine you had coolsharewareapp 1.1 and
wanted to know if there was an update. Drag/drop the thing onto the droplet
and up comes a web page describing the cool features for version 1.2 --
maybe even a link to an info-mac mirror (ok, so I'm blue skying here).
But, I see nothing wrong with the basic idea.

Idea two means you have to be connected to the internet, but you could
included detailed info that you could not in idea one. Idea one would satisfy
most people as they sit at home. Idea two is much broader in scope.

I would also love to see third parties put more info in the get-info
comments of items they stuff in the system folder.

Enough ranting.

Cheers,
Gordo.

In the recipient list change the 'To' to 'BCC' by clicking the down-arrow
