Subject: (Q) How much VRAM?
On PowerMacs with internal video is there any reason to install more
VRAM than necessary to support the desired monitor resolution and number
of colors? For example a monitor resolution of 832 x 624 x 32 requires a
little less than 2 MB of VRAM. Do I gain anything in video performance
if I increase the VRAM to 3 or 4 MB?

Subject: 7.5.3 install -> finder problems
I have a 7100/80AV here at work running system 7.5.3. I was running 7.5.2
and everything was fine, but now I have ONE problem thats starting to bug
me.
When you select "Open" from any application, the selection window comes up
as usual but not all of the pick-able objects are pick-able anymore. Example:
Most of the time, the drop down window that shows the directory path from
the desktop to the current directory won't drop. If it DOES drop, the OPEN,
CANCEL, DESKTOP or any of the other selections are inactive.
I've fortunately discovered all the keyboard equivalents for the standard
buttons and know how to move up and down in the directories using the
keyboard - but not being able to choose what KIND of file to load (say,
in WriteNow or WordPerfect) is sort of cramping my style.
I've tried re-installing 7.5.2 (works like normal) and then moving on and
intalling the update - but it quits working every time.
Anyone have a clue or a hint?
Thanks,

I, too, had this "problem" on my 8500/120 after updating my system to 7.5.3. I
discovered that it wasn't really a problem when I was inadvertantly distracted
after trying to exit the screen save mode. It turned out that Energy Saver cp
had spun down my hard drive, and there was up to a 10-or-so second delay while
the disk spun back up. Voila, no DS hanging, and happiness all around. Hope
that this is your solution, too.

Subject: Citadel encript problem
I've got a problem with my computer that I hope you can help me solve.
Using "Citadel" , a disk and file security tool for the MAC put out by
Datawatch I created a vault to store files I wanted to protect. For some
reason the files have been damaged and I can no longer access them thru
"Citadel". After talking to people at Datawatch I am still left with my
problem. They did suggest that I try to repair the files thru the use of
Norton Utilities. That, too, was unsuccessful. However, I was able to get
into the vault with Norton Utilities and recover the material stored there.
Now the problem is that when I open them thru Microsoft Word they are
encrypted. I need help in "translating" these files. I'd appreciate any
help you can offer.
I'm posting for my boss:
W. Hans Carter, Department of Biostatistics (804) 828-9824
Does anyone recall a review of disk/file security software
in MacUser or MacWorld? As I recall, the author said he
could "crack" most anything. If someone can refer me to the
article or come up with a phone number, that would be great!
thanks!

Could this be a SCSI conflict? Duo Docks can be used to used to install
additional hard drives, so there should be a connection between the Dock
and the inserted Duobook. Is there another disk? Would you need a SCSI
terminator? You might try SCSI Probe 3.5; sometimes it reports SCSI
termination problems.

Although I don't know the source of this font, its usage seems clear: It
is a simple method to hide passwords in login dialogs. If you type your
password and don't want others to read it, the simplest method to hide
it is to use a font with all bullets.

Hi All,
I have a Performa 400 that has lost it's desktop colors and doesn't know
where to find them.
This is what I have done:
Installed System 7.1 and System update 3.0.
Rebuilt the desktop.
Zapped PRAM.
Replaced battery.
Rebuilt Desktop and Zapped PRAM again.
Scanned HD and repaired a problem.
I still have no colors on my desktop patterns in the control panel. There
are not even any black or white boxes where colors would normally be just
below the mini desktop pattern in the control panel.
I have the monitor set to 256 colors and the highlight control panel set
to colors as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Subject: Note-Taking Software?
I am looking for a software package that will help automate taking notes.
Specifically, I would like some package that supports outlining with easy
keystrokes to switch levels, uses font/style differentiation as well as
indentation to denote outline levels, and one that is relatively light in
terms of its processing demands and memory requirements.
In addition, search tools, bookmarking and the ability to attach summaries
to documents would be helpful.
I have tried using the outline tool in MS Word. It works pretty well, but
demands a lot of processor horsepower. BBEdit Lite works pretty well with
indentation and the like, but the lack of true soft-wrapping makes it a
little annoying to use (I know that the new version supposedly supports
soft-wrapping, but I could never get it to work like a true word
processor).
Any recommendations? Please send them directly to me at [email protected]

Subject: Powerbook 170/Powerport Platinum connect problem
Greetings Mass Mind,
A friend in the Caribbean is having difficulty establishing a PPP
connection to the sole local ISP (running Unix). He has a Powerbook 170
8/40, System 7.1, Global Village Powerport (internal) 28.8 modem, (current)
Powerport software 2.5.3, MacPPP 2.0.1, MacTCP 2.0.6. He had no difficulty
auto-registering the modem with the head office in the States directly.
Other Macs (other models with other modems but same sys/tcp/ppp) using the
same ISP do not have problems.
The problem seems to be that the user and server modems connect, but fail
to go through the logon sequence because the Mac sees only garbage coming
in as the server is sending prompts. This is observed in the ConfigPPP
'terminal window' mode. Of course we've tried all manner of speed
combinations, and the following modem init strings:
AT&F1%C0
AT&F1%C0\N0
AT&F1W1S95=44
AT&F1W1S95=44%C0
AT&F1+MS=74
AT&F1+MS=74%C0
Also no other advice from Global Village...
What's going on? Help please!
Email me directly please, as I get behind sometimes in reading the list.
I'll summarize back to the list later.
Thanks gurus,
Eric Lindgren

I believe that I've had this problem in the past -- just a few weeks ago,
when I updated the FWB driver on my CI from version 1.7.5 to 1.8.
After a pretty hairy couple of hours, during which Disk First Aid and
Nortons were pretty much useless, I managed to find out what the
problem was. According to Symantec's 'MacTools', I'd somehow
managed to get my two disk drivers interlinked.
Fortunately, MacTools allowed me to install a temporary driver in
memory which enabling me to mount the disk and rescue my files. Did you
know that it takes 185 floppies to back up a 500 meg hard drive?
But anyway, it was just as well that I _did_ copy all those floppies,
because when I tried to reinstall the driver, the whole thing corrupted
and required a total reformatting of the disk.
I suspect you're suffering from the same problem. My commiserations.

Had to replace a friend's recently. Found only one shop here in
Tokyo that still had Quantum Daytona 514S drives at about $360.
They also had faster Toshiba 800 MB drives for about the same price,
but said that they didn't always start up reliably first boot up with
Powerbooks. I found Silverlining to be best for flakey drives -- use
"test R/W loops" and set the slower of the timings obtained.

Subject: Why does gamma setting change?
Can anyone offer a solution to this problem? My company recently
upgraded to sys. 7.5.3 on a Quadra 840AV, PPC 8100 and PPC 9500
and the Gamma Control Panel that ships with Photoshop no longer
loads our settings on restarts. When the mac is restarted and loading
all extentions and control panels we see the gamma setting
(brightness) change as the gamma cdev loads but when all of the
system files are done loading and the finder appears the brightness
dims back to how it looked before the gamma cdev loaded. If I then
open the gamma control panel it becomes brighter again without
doing anything except openning it. The on/off switch is still set to
"on" and the sliders to adjust the gamma are where they were left
when we saved our settings but it seems as if something is
overriding this control panel when the finder loads. I've resorted to
placing an alias of the gamma cdev in our startup folder so it's
opened as soon as the finder loads but it's an annoying extra step to
have to close it each time and we really don't want to tempt people
into adjusting the settings. Others I've asked said to delete my
finder prefs file and the gamma settings file and create new ones
but neitther worked. All suggestions welcome by email as well as
this list.
Thanks,
Chip

Please send them directly to me at [email protected]
and help conserve 1's and 0's.
Thanks in advance,
Brian Smith

[Well, that is weird. I have no clue. My guess is it never got sent out.
The scripts that put the digest into the archive are separate from the ones

Subject: Where to buy Powerbook 180c Hard Drives?
> Where I can buy an internal hard drive for a Powerbook 180c?

All suggestions welcome by email as well as
this list.
Thanks,
Chip
