Subject: (Q) FreePPP & 8500
First off I think I need to say two things:
1) Microsoft may be at the root of this evil.
2) Please note that I'm not spoiled, this is the office's 8500 - I drive
a Centris 610 at home.
That said -> I can get FreePPP 2.5 to dial, to connect, to let me
actually get packets across using MacTCP Ping.
Fire up Telnet, Netscape, anything -> I can get perhaps one page...but
DNS service is dead (despite the correct numbers in Free PPP...and after
that first page...nothing. Dies. Type 11 error next.
RamDoubler, SPeedDoubler were already turned off.
So was everything else I could yank.
Re-installed Free PPP. No dice.
As I mentioned...Microsoft may be the root ofmy problem...I dunno. I
loaded a beta version of MS Exchange...and problems seemed to start about
then. It has since been yanked...as has been the MS OLE libraries and
extensions.
Anybody have any clues about FreePPP? It used to work, so I don't think I
can blame it...but then again, it was installed by a Monkey (Grin).

I'm looking for a Mac utility that will take postscript or encapsulated
postscript and turn them into encapsulated postscript+image (EPSI) files.
At the moment, I have to ftp them to a Unix machine, run the GNU utility
ps2epsi and then ftp them back to the Mac for use in FrameMaker.
This is a bit inconvenient so I'd like to be able to do it all on the Mac.
If anyone knows of a mac utility that will convert PS/EPSF files to EPSI I
would be most grateful.

You need an IP Gateway on your company network. Most AppleTalk routers
(Cisco, Shiva, Compatible Systems, etc) have this capability. An
alternative is the Apple IP Gateway software available from Apple. It does
the same thing and you could run it on your office Mac.

Yes, you're right, that would work (provided that the unique style
doesn't include bold in its definition). This is an excellent tip, and
should remind me not to be so emphatic in the future.

For a relatively inexpensive option (less than $100) you might try "Music
Shop". It's notation doesn't match that of $500+ programs like "Finale",
but it's not bad.

Weird things are brewing...
I started up my LCIII (sys 7.5.3) with minimal extensions running for
photoshop/ scanning work yesterday. As the Mac started up, I got the
dreaded disk-question mark! Now, I usually start up from my external Gig,
so if there was a problem with that, I wondered, why wouldn't my Mac find
the System software on my internal 80MB drive?
Only when I turned off the gig and force restarted did the thing boot up
properly. I could then mount my external with HDT Prober (like SCSI Probe).
Naturally I thought this was a software problem, so after trying every
variation of INITs, etc. I reformatted my startup drive, and installed ALL
software from fresh, including the 7.5.3 update.
Well, after getting everything to work properly, I went to scan once again.
Low and behold, the same thing happened (flashing ?). I finally realised
that if I started up with the scanner turned OFF, things were normal, but
if it was on, it wouldn't boot up. I even tried starting up, then turning
on my scanner, then starting the scanning software, but the result was a
crash.
I reinstalled the scanning software once more, etc., but it still won't work!
Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello Maccies everywhere,
I am hoping someone out there can give me a clue as to why I have started
getting a lot of CHK Errors recently. I have recently installed RAM
Doubler, Speed Doubler and I run ~Aaron 1.3.1, plus a lot of other stuff on
my Performa 630, which has been de- Performa'd by my trashing a lot of
stuff like Launcher for more realistic tools like Extension Strip.
I have Bomb Shelter Init which gives you a chance to restart after a bomb.
Just before it kicks in I will get a dialog saying something like "System
Software CHK Error", then comes the bomb. These occurences are no respecter
of apps. They swoop anytime for no apparent reason. Norton Disk Doctor says
all is well, and it is, until CHK drops in.
If I knew what CHK was, maybe I could remedy things. Anybody got any
ideas please?
email is always answered.
TIA.

I was told that the safest, and best method of upgrading to system
7.5.3 was to first do a clean install of your old system. I was also
told that if you have a system CD(which I do), that you must press CMD
shift K when the install screen comes up. Unfortunately on my Performa
6200 CD, I only have something called restore system software. When I
run this program there is no screen that will allow me to press the
neccesary key combination. Would somebody explain to me how I can do a
clean install using the CD.

Subject: DUO 210 problems (long expl
Subject: DUO 210 problems (long explanation)
Well, I'm stumped so it's time to consult the info-mac community for answers.
I've been using a DUO 210 here at work since about 1993. We got it with a
DUO DOCK and a set of portable stuff. Mini-cock and external drive unit came
with the "package". We use it primarily as my desktop machine so it sits in
the dock for weeks at a time. We purchased this DUO 210 for the advantage it
gave us to do Teleprompting when we go shooting on location. For this we
acquired an E-Machines mini dock that outputs NTSC and upgraded our prompting
software to Macintosh. They work great (except for "mirroring" but that's
not a big deal).
In the whole time I have been using this DUO I have had very little trouble.
The drive (80 Mb) is sturdy, the docking has been fine, and the performance
has been really good. We have only ever owned one battery and it has served
us faithfully. I give it regular exercise; as is the habit with the kind of
serious NiCad experience we video guys have.
Here's my problem.
I started experiencing what I called "hesitations" during the startup of the
docked machine. They started happening during the load up of just one
control panel. It happened regularly enough for me to suspect that a very
recent update was, perhaps, not working with me and I notified the author of
the CP about it. Not surprisingly the author couldn't fathom why his CP
would hesistate during startup. I said I'd keep an eye on it.
About a week later the "hesitations" were turning into a molasses startup
right from the get go. I had not made any changes to my system set-up,
extensions, patches, applications, or do-dads through this whole time because
I was "watching" the system. This startup performance degraded to the point
where it took 10 minutes or longer to load all the my extensions and CPs.
Reboots without extensions loading would bring up the DUO so I suspected an
INIT/CDEV conflict and went about diagnosing the source of it. Of course, I
started with the CP I suspected.
Well, after about three weeks of trial and error, updates, endless restarts,
PRAM zaps, plucking and replacing various extensions, renaming and reordering
the startup sequence, replacing ExtMgr and reinstalling the System many times
I still am nowhere closer to understanding my supposed "conflict".
So I pulled down a demo of Conflict Catcher and let it loose. Good product.
It found nothing. It helped analyze my setup and checked all my "doo dads"
but nothing turned up. I have nothing but praise for ConfCatch but even that
didn't help.
Here's some background.
I run System 7.1. It's got the latest patches for Networking, Batteries,
Chooser, and all that stuff in the System Update 3.0. I have the Asante
stuff installed for my Ethernet line. So, for me to re-install my System
it's quite a chain of operations. I take out all my extensions and CPs using
EM and the thing goes slowly, I start with the shift key down and it works
fine.
My power supply fried last fall and we bought a new motherboard for the
machine. That's been the only service the machine has seen since I got it.
It even restarted with the System left on the hard drive from before the
servicing and I never found a problem with anything serious until recently.
Of course it was prudent (after getting my new motherboard) to take that
opportunity to rethink the contents of my drive and drastically reduce the
contents. I reformatted, left off lotsa older stuff, archived a pile of
documents and have been running as "lean" as I can since that time.
Here's where it gets interesting.
Since I first owned this DUO I've always had a strange experience with
rebuilding the desktop files. I might hold the keys at startup and it would
begin with "Do you really want to..." etc and then after the OK I would watch
it "freeze up" during the rebuild. Over the first couple of years of
operation this didn't bother me much. Anytime I wanted a new desktop I would
"hide" the old files and let the machine startup and make a brand new one.
Then I'd trash the old files. It's actually not much more of a chore than
holding down the keys.
As I was in the habit of "trashing" desktop files it was one of the first
things I would do to "restore" my docked machine. I'd restart, the pile of
doo dads would load up, it would automatically make desktop files and I'd be
away to the races. This "cure" would survive repeated restarts and would
convince me that I'd fixed things. Once I just updated the System with the
Update 3.0 installation and the "cure" was found.
But the real fracture occurs when I take the DUO out of the dock. I can be
operating with a fully functional system for days at a time and then need to
take the machine with me somewhere. The machine runs real good on location
and gives me no trouble. Restarts, recharging, running any applications. No
problems. When it gets back into the dock the re-start is molasses. Then I
trash the desktop files and restart. Quick response, full loading, full
rebuild. Working machine.
I suspect that something happens during the shutdown of the un-docked machine
which "fractures" the desktop (or some other aspect of the operation that
knows where everything should be) and it fails when connecting to the dock by
whatever conversation those two have when merging.
I don't get the slow starts on the un-docked mac. I can temporarily "fix"
the docked Mac and it will restart afterward. I can start the un-docked Mac
with or without extensions. But nothing I do prevents it from acquiring this
impairment when it rejoins the DOCK.
Now, I could get into the habit of simply rebuilding a Desktop each time I
return the DUO to the DOCK. I likely will continue to do this until I get
any more bright ideas. But I've been wondering if anyone else has ever seen
this kind of thing happen.
Other remarks.
As a DUO user I've always had a sharp eye out for "warnings" and updates and
comments on DUOs and I've been keen to read about any DUO-related
announcements. We get MacWeek here and I keep up to date with Info-Mac and
other industry news so I can know what's happening in video and stuff. I've
never read of anyone else having this problem on a DUO. I seem to recall a
discussion thread in Info-Mac some time back about a molasses startup on
something like an LC or whatever. I didn't pay close attention because it
didn't seem relevant to my situation at work or at home.
I had one of our Tech types here run the machine through a battery of checks.
Norton claims nothing is wrong. Confict Catcher says everything is fine.
SilverLining didn't like three drive sectors and "wrote them out". Virus
scanning turns up nothing. When it is working the machine shows no outward
signs of impaired function. I get the odd crash during network voyages but
I've experienced those before.
I'm at the end of this rope. I can't think of anything left to do about
this.
I am about to reformat my drive but I thought I'd consult with the world
first and see what wisdom exists out there. This mystery is also being
presented to Apple Corp. by our support tech here but I haven't heard
anything for the past week and expect little from that arena.
I'll accept any Email on the subject including wild speculation.

To add a sound with System 7.5, drag the sound file onto your System
FOLDER. Dragging into the System suitcase won't work.
The unnamed snd resources are probably the 'camera' noise which you get
when you press cmd-shift-3 to take a screen shot and a keyclick sound.

I have the same setup you do and I access the Intermet using
Apple IP Gateway. This is a piece of Apple software that:
1) Serves IP addresses over ARA,
2) Takes TCP/IP packets that are in Appletalk envelopes, opens
the envelope, and sends them out over the Internet (and
the same thin in reverse. The system works great.

Subject: More Zip Problems
There seem to be a lot of problems cropping up with Zip drives these days.
The problem I'm running into seems to be different than the head crash
problem others have reported.
I have an internal Zip drive in my PowerWave 604/132. I use it quite a
bit, and up until recently, it has worked just fine. I now find that the
computer no longer recognizes the drive at all. This happened once before,
but was cured by a shutdown and restart. Now, nothing seems to resolve it.
I've tried all the usual maneuvers, including trying to access the drive
with Norton Utilities, SCSI Probe, Mt Everything, HD Toolkit, etc. It just
isn't there. The odd thing is, the light on the drive glows a constant
orange, instead of green, which normally indicates that the drive is being
accessed. Zapping the PRAM, rebuilding the desktop, etc are not effective.
I put a disk in, and it cannot be removed. Restarting with a bare-bones
system and restarting from a different system on an external hard drive
have no effect. The Iomega driver is Xed out on startup, and the driver
cannot be re-installed, as Iomega Tools says that it can't find a Zip drive
connected to the computer.
I'm inclined to think that this is a hardware problem, and that I should
call Power Computing to come over and fix it. However, I do tend to
experiment with lots of software, including lots of system extensions, so
anything is still possible.
Has anyone seen this particular problem? Any idea as to the cause and the
solution? I'm certainly open to knowledgable speculation, and will try
pretty much anything, but what I'm mostly hoping for is that someone has
experienced this same thing before first-hand.
Thanks in advance,

Try the Musictime demo which is on the info-mac archive. It won't save or
print but it will import MIDI files and play them back and it can scroll
the music past as it plays (choose the "Follow Playback" option). It's
probably not perfect for the job, but it is free! If you want to play the
QT MIDI instruments rather than an external MIDI device you'll also need a
piece of shareware such as Terry Greeniaus' Quicktime MIDI Player (also on
info-mac) as Musictime doesn't support OMS.

Subject: Printer problem
I had very similar problems with a Laserwriter Pro 630 even before
switching to 7.5.3 At that time, I suspected that the problem was
related to PC users trying to print through the parallel port on the
printer, but the problem recurred even after I made sure that only the
ethernet was hooked up.
The problem was that the printer would disappear from the Chooser or
would appear but then refuse to respond when the Mac tries to talk to
it.
The solution turned out to be to switch the printer off for at least
half-an-hour. On switching it back on again, everything is fine. I can
only speculate that either the Postscript interpreter or some PS job
sent to the printer is buggy, and clobbers something in memory which
disables communications. Only by switching the printer off for an
appreciable length of time can the memory contents be completely cleared
and the printer resuscitated.

As promised, here is the summary of the responses to the problems with DW
550C. You were all terrific - I had a lot of e-mail!! Tim Biddle gave the
most comprehensive reply and it's quoted below(thanks Tim!!). FWIW - the
HP site is slow - like 0.25 KB/sec from the UK. I got going with just the
first of Tim's suggestions - didn't need to do the rest.
Happy printing .... and good luck!!
Rick
Get the latest driver from HP...URL is as follows:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/dw110en.hqx
Then, get the HP Background Printing update at:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/mp105en.hqx
And if you still have problems, get the following:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/dw165en.hqx
This file contains 4 preferences files for Print Shop Deluxe, depends on
which version of PSD you have as to which pref file you use. I think there is
a readme that explains it all too.

Dear Digest Readers,
I have a Stylewriter 2200 and a PowerMac 7200. I do web page
publishing. I have a few questions about printing color and b & w
documents containing both graphics and text. Are there any advantages
to my getting QuickDraw GX over using regular QuickDraw for my printing?
Do I understand correctly that I need to install a separate QuickDraw GX
package first, before installing the GX printer drivers for the
Stylewriter 2200 in order fo the GX printer drivers to work?
So do I need two 3 disk sets (the Stylewriter 2200 software installer
and the QuickDraw GX software installer)?
How is QuickDraw GX's output different from regular TrueType or
Postscript?
Will having QuickDraw GX affect my using Adobe Type Manager 3.8.3?
I have yet to get ATM 3.8.3 to be crash free.
Thank you.

The reason a System resource (in your case a snd [sound file]) "bounces back
out" is because another resource already has the ID of the one you are trying
to move in. To get around this simply drop the file on the System folder. When
you it this way a new ID will automatically be assigned to the resource (if
needed) and it will be moved to the appropriate location.

Subject: Type 10 and 11 errors with 7.5.3
Dear Mac Gurus,
I know this one has been discussed here before, but after many
attempts to solve my problems myself, I turn to you for assistance.
I have been a Mac lover (a convert from a PeeCee user) for almost
three years now. I used to think the dreaded 'bomb' error box was something
only seen if you really screwed your machine up, but I have seen Type 10
and Type 11 messages many times since I switched to 7.5.3. It seems to
particularly be a problem while running Netscape 2.0 or 2.0.1 (I have
crashes with both). I am using OT 1.1, and FreePPP 2.5 (and I must say that
I have a noticeable speed improvement with OT since I switched from MacTCP
2.0.6. I would hate to switch back.) But the problem is not totally with
OT, since I also have either type 10 or 11 errors with several other apps.
I really don't believe it is an extension conflict, I have trimmed my
extension collection to a minimum and still I intermittently get those
bombs.
I have done a 'clean' install, which didn't help. Someone recently
mentioned doing an 'ultra-clean' install which basically meant reformatting
my HD and reinstalling system software. I hate to do that, I have one piece
of software that has a security dongle that clicks off a 'life' every time
I reformat my HD and I only have two lives left. Would this really help?
Are others having persistent bombs with 7.5.3? Any suggestions? I am
frustrated!!
My current system: PowerWave 604/120 with 32Megs RAM, 2 gig HD. System
7.5.3 with O.T. 1.1 .

Bill

I've had a rather nightmarish upgrade to System 7.5.3, I've ran into two
distinct problems, and have run out of options. Apple's SOS center seems
unable to come up with a solution or explanation for my trouble.
Here's the first problem:
I installed a Fujitsu 1gb SCSI-2 drive, I replaced my internal 350mb
drive with it. This was originally used in a PC, but I had no problems
reformatting it, and using it under 7.5 and 7.5.1. When I upgrade to
7.5.3 (and I've done the whole clean install thing about 10 times,
including a clean format/PRAM zap. What happens is the very first boot
AFTER installing 7.5.3 works fine. After that, the next time i boot, the
General Controls panel (which comes with the Performas and is updated by
the 7.5.3 update) is corrupt and locks the computer. I can boot fine
without it. Additionally, the computer locks frequently, and copying files
off of certain CDs will lock the computer consistantly. The CDs work fine
under other OS versions.
I've verified all the proper drivers for the HD, done everything I can think
of, and the problem persists.
Problem 2: When I take the old drive out and put in my original 350mb hard
drive, which I also know to be working I have few to no problems with 7.5.3,
but the one thing that is driving me nuts is the Views control panel is not
saving settings. It also defaults back to the initial settings, and I
like having grid alignment and other things turned on.
I've run Disk First Aid numerous times, rebuilt the desktop, zapped the PRAM,
checked the preferences folder (there doesn't seem to be a VIEWS preference,
so I assumed it was stored in the PRAM).
WHat can I DO?!?!?!

Oddly, this does not happen with all files. For instance:

SPEECH OK

At the moment, I have to ftp them to a Unix machine, run the GNU utility

This is a bit inconvenient so I'd like to be able to do it all on the Mac.
If anyone knows of a mac utility that will convert PS/EPSF files to EPSI I

You need an IP Gateway on your company network. Most AppleTalk routers
(Cisco, Shiva, Compatible Systems, etc) have this capability. An
alternative is the Apple IP Gateway software available from Apple. It does
the same thing and you could run it on your office Mac.

Yes, you're right, that would work (provided that the unique style

For a relatively inexpensive option (less than $100) you might try "Music

I have the same setup you do and I access the Intermet using
Apple IP Gateway. This is a piece of Apple software that:
1) Serves IP addresses over ARA,
2) Takes TCP/IP packets that are in Appletalk envelopes, opens
the envelope, and sends them out over the Internet (and
the same thin in reverse. The system works great.

=as simple and convenient as KiwiEnv for doing the same task?

I use EasyEnvelopes+ . I've never used Kiwi, so I can't compare it.
All I can say is that it is very simple and useful. It is inexpensive

Hi everyone! First of all: Long live the Mac!!
I'd like to have a mailing list using Claris' Emailer. What I don't like,
is that Emailer puts all the "To"s in every message. In other words, if I
send a message out to 50 people, each person sees at the beginning of each
message, 49 other names listed. Isn't there a way to have Emailer send out
these messages without displaying this? I've tried the group option will
all the addresses listed in the group, but the same thing happens.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks very much,

Subject: Modem for a Classic
Sounds coming from the past? No. I want to add a modem to my old Classic
(4MRAM). I couldn't get an old modem and new ones require system 7.x which,
I understand is not appropriate for a Classic. My question: what is the
meaning of the requirement for system 7? That the fax software will not
work with older systems (not too bad for me), or that the modem driver will
not work?
Any suggestions will be very appreciated.

>Has anyone come across a MIDI player application capable of showing the

Dear All,
As promised, here is the summary of the responses to the problems with DW
550C. You were all terrific - I had a lot of e-mail!! Tim Biddle gave the
most comprehensive reply and it's quoted below(thanks Tim!!). FWIW - the
HP site is slow - like 0.25 KB/sec from the UK. I got going with just the
first of Tim's suggestions - didn't need to do the rest.
Happy printing .... and good luck!!
Rick
Get the latest driver from HP...URL is as follows:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/dw110en.hqx
Then, get the HP Background Printing update at:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/mp105en.hqx
And if you still have problems, get the following:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/dw165en.hqx
This file contains 4 preferences files for Print Shop Deluxe, depends on
which version of PSD you have as to which pref file you use. I think there is
a readme that explains it all too.

Subject: QD GX SW 2200 ATM 3.83 (Q)

TIA,
Bill

Subject: View Control Panel

Subject: Voices
I have asked about this before and have not received a reply that fixed it.
The problem is that, on my Performa 630-CD the voice at some times is very
poor, sounding like an HIspanic who hasn't been speaking English long.
Oddly, this does not happen with all files. For instance:
SPEECH POOR
Simple Text
Eliza (dwnld)
Text-Edit+ (dwnld)
Guru (3.5 disk from
Newer Technologies)
SPEECH OK
Groliers CD
Encarta (CD)
Bridge(Shariff)C D
Solitaire of Champs(dwnld)
Hangman(came on computer)
Interviews on Internet
Someone suggested that I get MacYack, which I did and those voices
were little better.
TechTool does not show a Speech Manager, but does show 16 bit audio
supported and
I/O Manager present. What can I do the improve things?
