Here's the word on how to fix your problem from the US Robotics site:
To use your Sportster modem on a Macintosh, set DIP switches 1, 3, 5, 7
and 8 in the DOWN (ON) position. If you require auto-answer, leave DIP
switch 5 in the UP (OFF) position. There are two cables that are
available for the Macintosh.
The first is the more common, which is a standard serial cable. The
second is called a 'hardware handshaking' cable, which provides the
CTS/RTS signals necessary for hardware flow control.
The modem may be failing because you are trying to use hardware
handshaking with a standard serial cable. If you make the DIP switch
changes as recommended above, and change the initialization string to
"AT&F&B1&H2&I2" (for software handshaking), the Modem/Mac combination
will likely work.
If you are not sure which kind of cable you are using, use the software
flow control string first, and then try the hardware flow control
string: "AT&F&B1&H1&R2". If the latter does not work you do not have a
cable that supports hardware flow control.
The proper lights at power up are "CS" (should be on at all times), "TR"
(because DIP switch 1 forces the DTR signal high), and the "AA" if you
have DIP switch 5 UP (OFF). "RD" and "SD" should flicker as you type
commands to the modem.
After configuring your modem with the proper settings, put DIP switch #7
back in the UP (OFF) position. If the last steps do not work, then there
could be a problem with either the cable or the modem. Please try the
modem with another cable before assuming that the modem is not
functioning correctly.

Only? ... A way in Word 5 to handle editing/formatting of a variable number
of characters between others is to treat them as paragraphs. In this case
it can be done quite easily (I assume document has normal style; ignore ").
For example:
Replace " _" with "^p% "
Replace "_" with "%^p"
Replace "%" + normal style with some unique style - tip: hold the shift key
down when selecting styles from the ruler - (% characters should not be
deleted)
Replace unique style with normal style + bold
Replace "^p%" with nothing. (clear any styles)
Replace "%^p" with nothing.
Instead of "%", a less used character, like shift-option-7, can be
substituted. Difficult cases occur where the character sought is the first
in a story or paragraph, but I think the above sequence handles these
instances. Minor modifications are needed if the text has several styles.
(A slightly different overall method, using tab instead of paragraph
replacements, is available in other cases, because Word allows formats to
be applied to selected columns.)
Another approach: with access to any key-sequence macro utility, you could
use the Word command "Extend selection to" (Command-Option-H) to build a
simple macro to do the basic job.

I had this occure once after I replaced my system 7.5 Finder and System

running Norton disk Doctor and performing a clean install. Then,

When I am running AOL's program I get out of memory eroor messages

The only other clue I have is that when I go to "about this mac", it

Hello !
I am considering accessing the Internet via a modem link between my home

My office Macintosh is connected to the internet through a direct

I usually access to my office Mac from my home Mac through an ARA modem
link, sometimes only through an ARA connection, sometimes through a

I would like to get my home macintosh to be connected to the internet using
these connnections.
Is there a way to do that, by installing server softawre on the office mac

You need a display adapter to provide the proper sync signal for the
monitor. Check with your local Apple dealer, he should be able to order
one for you. It should be around US$30.

Does NDD say there's a problem with VM Storage when you restart with VM
*on* or only when you turn it on then run NDD w/o restarting? I bet only
the latter. I think NDD is bumping into VM reserving disk space for the
"virtual memory" but not yet using it because the Mac hasn't been
restarted with VM on. If that's the case I wouldn't worry about it. If
NDD "always" has a problem with VM (when it's on that is), then I might
worry about it and ask some questions of Apple or Symantec.

Subject: Mac Easy Open problems (7.5)
Hi:
I am having some major problems both formatting Prodos disks using 7.5's
Mac Easy Open and copying files to those disks once they are formatted.
To begin with, half the time the mac formats the Prodos 800K disks as Dos
disks despite my checking the Prodos entry. It fails to remove the "PC" on
the icon and put the "II" there where it belongs as well.
After I reformat it a few more times and finally get the "II" icon to
appear on the disk, it will not copy files to the disk. I get several
error messages:
1. "This disk has a bad signuture and copying cannot continue."
2. "Copying cannot continue do to a -37 type error."
3. "The disk directory is full." (It is not).
I have tried this over and over and these are the results. I have also
tried trashing and reinstalling Mac Easy Open by itself and still get the
above results. Does anyone out there have a solution for me? I
desperately want these apple 2 downloads that I am doing on my mac
transferrable to my apple 2 systems. I am running a Mac Classic II with 10
meg RAM and System 7.5.
Please email me directly if possible as I do not always have access to this

Indeed, ISOnoHFS2 can be used to mount the ISO 9660 partition of a
hybrid CD-ROM, but not to mount the HFS partition. ISOnoHFS2 works by
tricking the Mac into believing the CD-ROM has no HFS partition, which

Only?

Subject: [Q] Out of memory Error
I have just updated to sys 7.5 from 7.1 on my powermac 6100. I dont
have the 7.5.2 upgrade so this may be my problem.
When I am running AOL's program I get out of memory eroor messages
and it closes windows on me. I have just installed the latest version
of AOL for MAC. I have 16 Meg of memory so I dont know why I am getting
this.
The only other clue I have is that when I go to "about this mac", it
shows that the system is at full capacity for memory (even when I up the
cache). I suspect a virus, but Disinfect 3.6 doesnt show anything
and Norton 3.0 shows no problems.

Anyone have experience or knowledge about using a Wintel configured monitor
as an external monitor with a 100 series PB? I'm hoping to make the
connection between my own trusty PB 160 and a Gateway-tagged 15" monitor
(the Crystalscan, I believe they call it; don't know who really made the
thing).
I assume I need a hardware dongle to make this connection work; do I need
software as well? Any experiences/suggestions to share? Prices,
availability, etc? I'll be in the Boston area if anyone has a favorite
supplier in that area.

Subject: Accessing the Internet via ARA
Hello !
I am considering accessing the Internet via a modem link between my home
and my office.
My office Macintosh is connected to the internet through a direct
connection to our local Vax server.
I usually access to my office Mac from my home Mac through an ARA modem
link, sometimes only through an ARA connection, sometimes through a
Timbuktu connection.
I would like to get my home macintosh to be connected to the internet using
these connnections.
Is there a way to do that, by installing server softawre on the office mac
and accorded client software on my home mac ? I believe I will need a
TCP/IP number on the home mac.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

WordPerfect 3.5 will import (and export) html files. It has a macro
language that can automate the find-and-replace operation. It is fully
scriptable, so you can automate the entire process via AppleScript.

Please email me directly if possible as I do not always have access to this
digest. Thanks.

Subject: Microsoft Dialog Lies
If you turn virtual memory off (as is requested by certain applications
such as Looking Glass Technologies "Flight Unlimited" flight sim) on a
PowerMac and then try to launch Microsoft Word 6 or Excel 5, neither
application will launch. Instead they will put up dialog boxes that lie to
you. Word will say, "Can't Find Microsoft_OLE." Excel will issue a
similarly misleading dialog box. Neither application will tell you that
virtual memory needs to be turned on. It took me a while to figure out
what was going on. Rather poor programming from the folks in Redmond, I
think.

I have the same problem, only my cat knows that climbing on top of the

scared of cat hairs falling through the vent slots. What's the betting
that's the biggest cause of failure for unsuspecting cat-owning domestic

Indeed, ISOnoHFS2 can be used to mount the ISO 9660 partition of a
hybrid CD-ROM, but not to mount the HFS partition. ISOnoHFS2 works by
tricking the Mac into believing the CD-ROM has no HFS partition, which
forces it into looking further and finding and mounting the ISO 9660
partition.

Subject: Restoring from Apple Backup files
Anyone know of any utilities that can do a selective restore of an apple
backup set? My children trashed a couple of games that came pre-installed
on my performa. It looks like the only way to get them back is to do a
complete restore of the 7.5(.0) CDROM on my hard drive--not something I would
want to do.
The alternative would be to have the Apple Restore restore to a zip drive,
but the apple restore program apparently doesn't recognize a zip drive.
