Subject: [*] BibTeX version 1.03
It has no known bugs, however, use at your own risk; there is no
warranty.... The only known crashes are from excessively low application
memory partitions. It seems as if 365k is required for 680x0 machines, and
300k for PPC machines. Since by default it's set at the more generous of
these two, if you use a PPC mac, you could lower the application's
partition size.
This version of BibTeX is totally free.
Recent changes:
1.03 Minor changes --- it now gives a message 'BibTeX run complete.'
in the log window, rather than just finishing. Documentation
update. I've fixed the FREF/BNDL problems, so drag'n'drop
really should work now
1.02 Switchable between Big and Small. Uses new memory allocation
scheme from Rick, so temporary memory is used rather than the
system heap. This means the application's given partition can
be much smaller (300k works for me). Added fref 'TEXT' resource
which was missing previously (so drag and drop will work under
all circumstances now).
1.01 Copes with Unix as well as Mac EOL characters
1.0 Original; soon to be distributed with OzTeX 2.0
What is BibTeX ?
================
BibTeX is the bibliography handling tool related to the TeX/LaTeX
typesetting system (available on almost all conceivable OS platforms).
When a document is typeset with LaTeX, an auxiliary file (with extension
'.aux') is generated. This auxiliary file contains, amongst other things,
a list of references (to books, articles, research reports, web-url's,...)
cited in the original document. BibTeX takes this list, together with the
name of a style file (extension '.bst') and a list of bibliography
databases (extension '.bib') which are also given in the auxiliary file,
and produces a wonderfully formatted list of references which the LaTeX
system subsequently (and automatically) appends to your typeset document.

Subject: [*] Font-o-rama! 1.1.1
Font-o-rama! is a font dialog box. It's a drop-in replacement for the
font dialog box or font menus in all the applications you use. With
Font-o-rama! you can see all the fonts on your system at once!
It's better than other font dialog boxes, because it's carefully
designed to be very quick and easy to use. It's better than font menus
for the same reason. If you like using the keyboard, you can quickly
select and set fonts using only the keyboard. If you like the mouse,
you can set any font, size, or style with a single click.
Font-o-rama! is known to work with many common applications, including
Aldus PageMaker 5.0 and 6.0, Microsoft Word 6.0, QuarkXPress 3.3, etc.
It probably works with your application, too.
Changes in 1.1 include the addition of a short font description to the
font selection window.
Requires: System 7.1
Moderators: Font-o-rama! may be included on the commercially available
CD-ROM of the archives.

Subject: [*] GifBuilder 0.3.2
GifBuilder 0.3.2 is a utility to create animated GIF files, which quickly
become a popular way to include short movies in Web pages. Its input is
an existing animated GIF, a bunch of PICT, GIF and/or TIFF files, or a
QuickTime movie, and its output is a GIF89a file with multiple images.
Options include color palette, pixel depth, interlacing, transparency,
interframe delay, disposal method, frame offset, looping and dithering.
Animations can be previewed. Comprehensive scripting support. Fat binary.
Main changes since 0.3.1: Frame size optimization (resulting often in
large file size savings), output depth of 3/5/6/7 bits/pixel, two more
cross-platform color palettes, basic online help, many user interface
improvments and bug fixes.
GifBuilder 0.3.2 is freeware (see the readme file for the details).

Subject: [*] Insomniac 1.1.0 for PowerBooks
Keywords: POWERBOOK PORTABLE DUO SYSTEM SLEEP AWAKE MODEM
Note: This utility works only on those Macintosh models that can wake
themselves up (Macintosh Portable, PowerBook 100, PowerBook 500 & 5300
series, or PowerBook Duos).
Some PowerBooks have the ability to wake themselves up. This is very
convenient, for automatically sending faxes or email in the middle of
the night.
However, the "PowerBook" or "Portable" Control Panel provided by Apple
only allows you to enter a single wakeup time. This prevents you from
scheduling multiple wake-up sessions. For example, if you wanted to
send your faxes at 1:00am, and then download some files at 2:00am,
you'd have to stay up until 1:00am, and reset the wakeup timer
manually.
Insomniac allows you to program up to fifty wakeup "events" (registered
copies only). Therefore, you can have your PowerBook wake up several
times during the night, or even program it to wake up once a night for
weeks on end.
Version 1.1.0 contains the following enhancements:
* Converted to CodeWarrior and created PowerPC version.
* Added doubleclicking on entries to modify them.
* Fixed small memory leak that could cause crashes after extended use.
* Prevented unselecting entries by clicking beyond end of list.
* Repositions windows if they were positioned on a larger monitor.
Shareware; $10 registration fee suggested. Unregistered copies allow
you to enter up to two wake-up events.

MacTyping'French=81 by W. Rogers is an inexpensive Macintosh sharware progra=
m
that will help you learn to type in French or just improve your typing in
=46rench. The instructions are in English, the typing materials are in
=46rench.
While not a language tutor, the program will also help if your learning
=46rench, because you will use the French alphabet, type from among thousand=
s
of correctly-spelled French words, and type from among hundreds of
well-written French sentences.
The program uses five integrated work areas that together teach correct
finger placement and "touch-typing" memory of the keys on the keyboard.
Practice materials include: single letters, letter & number sequences,
words, sentences, paragraphs, and free typing. The program offers a
spelling checker, user-defined speed goals, score sheets, time tracking
with rest-signals, and many other helpful features. The program also comes
in English and English Dvorak. Other non-English versions (e.g., German,
Italian, Spanish) under development. Users can devise their own
session-routines, by working in one or more of the modules for ten to
fifteen minutes each.

Subject: [*] Mercutio MDEF 1.3b9
This is a public beta of the Mercutio MDEF v1.3b9.
The Mercutio MDEF is a Menu DEFinition resource that allow developers
to easily and elegantly extend the power of their application menus.
These MDEFs allow menus to have multiple-modifier key-equivalents
(e.g. shift-command-C), custom icons, item callbacks, and other
goodies.
Major feature additions and changes since 1.2 are:
- Support for window font/size: Mercutio now correctly draws popup
menus in the current font and size. This means you can use Mercutio
for Geneva 9-pt popup menus and the like.
- Graphic icons for non-printing keys: non-printing key equivalents
such as page up/ down, home/help, etc. can be drawn as text or as
icons that look like the keys on the extended keyboard.
- Various cosmetic changes, optimizations and bug fixes.
- New software license -- please read as it defines the terms under
which you may use Mercutio.
As before, Mercutio includes:
- Support for non-printing keys (function keys, page up/down,
arrow keys, etc)
- Support for icon suites, small and large icons, and SICNs in
hierarchical menu items.
- Support for all 4 modifier keys (command, shift, option, control)
- User-definable style mapping: developer determines which style
bits are used as feature flags
- Dynamic items: items whose contents change depending on what
modifier keys are being held down (e.g. when the option key is
held down, Save becomes Save All).
- Application callback routine to let you decide on the fly what
the item contents should be.
- System 7's Balloon Help and True Gray.
- Color menus.
- 99% compatible with standard MDEF.

The Mobius Speedster series of Accelerator cards have a problem with
Apple's Sound Manager causing screeching noises whenever sounds are played
. This problem was previously corrected by replacing the Sound Manager
extension and Sound control panel of System 7.1.
System 7.5 eliminated the Sound Manager extension making the previous fix
unusable. I have studied the problem and come up with fixes to the sound
manager code located within the System files of System 7.5. Running these
patches will install the new fixes.
This archive includes patches for Systems 7.5, 7.5.1 and 7.5.3.
These patches do not allow the Speedster to use Virtual Memory, RamDoubler

There should be something on the back of the monitor that says how many
watts it consumes. Most of that power gets converted into heat. If the
monitor produces no more heat than a light bulb of approximately the
same wattage, it's normal.
So far, no one has sold a gadget that lets you use this wasted energy to

Could some helpful soul tell me why I can no longer save any web pages
as text? Save As... source works okay, but if I select text in
the save dialog, a standard download window opens, and just sits there.
Cancel won't make it go away, and the document never gets saved (size of 0k).
I'm using 2.0.2 - I think it stopped working with 2.0.1.
Thanks in advance.

you can try "http://www.netmind.com/URL-minder/URL-minder.html"
you should have no problems with the new PP, I've had it for about a week
now, and it's great (more features than the beta)

I have access to a Apple-GS and a 3.5in drive. Transfer them to that
and then use Apple file Exchange. You can buy a 3.5in drive for the
Apple 2e, maybe at a surplus store. You will need an adapter card to
go with that. I still think the best way is the Apple-Gs.
Clarisworks will translate Appleworks text, SS, and database files.

QuickMail from CE Software has been able to do this for many years (since

the LC.) You can reach 'em for a demo copy at 1-800-5-CESOFT.
QuickMail is a LAN mail package (AppleTalk) with gateways to just about
every e-mail system on the planet(Internet/SMTP/POP/UUCP, as well as AOL,
CompuServe, CIS, MCI Mail, scriptable text mail systems, corporate mail
systems, X.400, you name it, there's a gateway from QuickMail to it).
It's the e-mail system my company uses at work.

Remarketing.
There is a bit more to it than that. To use a 3.5 drive on the Apple IIe, you
need
not only the drive but also an interface card (drive controller) inthe IIe. The
diskette must be formatted in ProDOS. Then, when you move the diskette to
the Mac, you need to a translation program, like Apple File Exchange to copy
the files to the Mac properly. The best translator program I know of is
MacLink Plus, which can translate between Apple II, Macintosh and PC formats.
The source files can be from a great many different programs, as can the the
destination formats. For example, I translated an AppleWorks word processor
file to a WordPerfect (PC) file and lost none of the page layout formatting.
If you don't want to buy the 3.5 disk, and don't have a friend who can copy
files
for you, another option is to use a comm program on the IIe and transmit the
file to the Mac. You don't even need a modem, just an appropriate serial
cable.
Hope that helps.

Subject: Spreadsheet (Q)
Dear Info-Mac Readers,
I'm looking for a good inexpensive spreadsheet. Anybody have any
experience with Keep it Simple or other inexpensive spreadsheet?
I would love a spreadsheet that can parse data using any delimiter.
Especially important is its ability to sort multiple column data either
by alphanumeric or numeric values.
In addition all the usual @ functions would be great (@SUM is especially
important, Average, running sums would be great). Of course
graphing capability of 2-d and Pie charts is a must.
One thing that is going to be hard to get is something to
convert my old Full Impact and PC Lotus 1-2-3 files into
the spreadsheet format. Does Keep it Simple have facility to do this?
Also is Keep it Simple PowerMac native, or at least compatible with the
PowerMac 7200? If the answer to any of these questions is no, who does
have all these capabilities, or which ones are missing from which
spreadsheet?
I don't want to spend more than $100. Excel has now increased in price
to $300 putting it way out of reach.
Thank you.

Subject: Zip vs EZ Drives
Hi to all Info-Mac fans!
Just thought I'd have my say on the recent questions regarding Zip vs EZ
drives.
I too had a Syquest 44Mb drive for a couple of years, and, though it worked
most of the time, I had the inevitable problems with cartridges not
mounting properly, having to restart my mac to get the icon to appear on
the desktop etc., so when I came to choose a new removeable drive, I had no
hesitation after reading the reports to go for a Zip, and I haven't
regretted it since. It's extremely user-friendly, slick, fast, reliable and
just FEELS so much better than the clunky old Syquests.
Hope this helps anyone thinking of purchasing a new drive, but remember -
this is only MY opinion!

Subject: [*] BibTeX version 1.03
It has no known bugs, however, use at your own risk; there is no
warranty.... The only known crashes are from excessively low application
memory partitions. It seems as if 365k is required for 680x0 machines, and
300k for PPC machines. Since by default it's set at the more generous of
these two, if you use a PPC mac, you could lower the application's
partition size.
This version of BibTeX is totally free.
Recent changes:
1.03 Minor changes --- it now gives a message 'BibTeX run complete.'
in the log window, rather than just finishing. Documentation
update. I've fixed the FREF/BNDL problems, so drag'n'drop
really should work now
1.02 Switchable between Big and Small. Uses new memory allocation
scheme from Rick, so temporary memory is used rather than the
system heap. This means the application's given partition can
be much smaller (300k works for me). Added fref 'TEXT' resource
which was missing previously (so drag and drop will work under
all circumstances now).
1.01 Copes with Unix as well as Mac EOL characters
1.0 Original; soon to be distributed with OzTeX 2.0
What is BibTeX ?
================

Requires: System 7.1

Subject: [*] Mobius Speedster Fix 1.0
The Mobius Speedster series of Accelerator cards have a problem with
Apple's Sound Manager causing screeching noises whenever sounds are played
. This problem was previously corrected by replacing the Sound Manager
extension and Sound control panel of System 7.1.
System 7.5 eliminated the Sound Manager extension making the previous fix
unusable. I have studied the problem and come up with fixes to the sound
manager code located within the System files of System 7.5. Running these
patches will install the new fixes.
This archive includes patches for Systems 7.5, 7.5.1 and 7.5.3.
These patches do not allow the Speedster to use Virtual Memory, RamDoubler
nor Debugger (MacsBug).

There should be something on the back of the monitor that says how many
watts it consumes. Most of that power gets converted into heat. If the
monitor produces no more heat than a light bulb of approximately the
same wattage, it's normal.
So far, no one has sold a gadget that lets you use this wasted energy to

get used to it.
IA has potential, but to save me more work than it creates I would need to
be able to alter its translation table substantially. The documentation
that comes with the beta is very incomplete (it has links to documents not
supplied, for instance, with DOS naming conventions). The online tutorial
at Microsoft's Web site is for the Windows version, which is not a huge
problem (except for the first step), but it too is pretty sketchy. Does
anybody know if there is a way to alter IA's behavior short of ResEdit?
Is it just a coincidence that IA is the opposite of AI? :>)

QuickMail from CE Software has been able to do this for many years (since
Macs first had microphones, in fact, along about the time of the IIsi and
the LC.) You can reach 'em for a demo copy at 1-800-5-CESOFT.
