Apple, shortly after it was announced, and it still hasn't arrived. Should
I be worried? I didn't bother to jot down the date ordered and the phone

Subject: (Q) Looking for a database

I work at a small (read "not rich") community college, about 1700 students.
We are looking for a database program to replace UserBase on our old Vax.
We need something that is networked, multi-user (about 5), record-locking,
and can handle a large pile of data since we need to keep records for all
students going back, back, waaay back in time. Oh, yeah, it should be not
too expensive (I was told 4th Dimension was too expensive).

Anybody out there using anything like this? Recommendations, where to
look, what to try? Someone actually have something up and running?

Subject: 100BT network speed?

Hello,

I am looking for any experiences people can relate to me regarding
experience with an all Mac 100BT network. Specifically how fast it is
working on a day to day basis. My company recently got our 100bt
network up and running and the speed has been a little disappointing.
For example, on our nightly backup on a 10bt network, the average
speed in Retrospect was about 4-5MB per minute. On the 100bt network
varies from 8.3-10.3MB per minute. This seems pretty bad and we are
seeking explanation for it. The hub is an Asante, and we are not
using a switch. Any information anyone could send me about Mac 100bt
networks, even if it doesn't directly relate to our problem would be
greatly appreciated. Please write me at >>[email protected]
Subject: 12 MB not enough

Dear Digest Readers,
After numerous upgrades, finally a stable system. I read yesterday in
the "New York Times" that Amelio is trying to push the minimum RAM
configuration to 12MB on future Macs. But I say that is not enough. It
took upgrading to 40MB on a PowerMac 7200/75 before everything worked.
It took adding Macsbug. It took removing the Internet Config
Preferences to get Internet Config to work properly again.
So who would like to petition Apple to raise the minimum RAM to 40MB on
systems using PCI?

This is practicly necessary if Apple is going to get in the Internet
business, because already the new Netscape isn't stable unless you
assign it at least 15MB. WebArranger, a great utility to figuring out
if your hyperlinks are outdated requires another 12MB. The system
software alone requires between 6 and 8MB, and running less than 4MB
free causes Type 11 errors.

Have other people had similar experiences or would like to join in a
petition?

Sincerely,
[email protected]

It is easier than that. Go to Replace. For the Find leave the string blank,
Click on Format popup and choose Character. Click on Underline. For the
Replace leave the string blank, Click on Format popup and choose Character.
Click on Bold. Replace all.

I highly recommend you check out "The Generic Icon Page - Introduction" at:

Lots of useful information that should be of help. My first guess is that
your problem is related to the multiple partitions. I've had similar
problems dealing with both external drives and multiple partitions on an
internal drive. My eventual work-around was to restart the Finder - I use
"File Buddy" for the task.

Yes... I started having this problem recently (with both old and new
disks). First at home on my PowerMac 8500 and then the same thing happened
on my Quadra 640 at work (two different Zip drives). Both are running
7.5.3 OS and the problem occurred regardless if I was using the Zip 4.2 or
4.3 driver. The only new item that both had in common was that File
Sharing had been enabled for the first time between the two machines.
After turning off file sharing on both machines, the zip drive started
working and all previously unreadable disks could be found. However, I am
not convinced this is entirely the whole problem and would also be
interested to hear if anyone else is having similar problems.

Has anyone else encountered this problem with ZIP drives- you have aliases
for folders on two (or more) ZIP disks, say "Folder A" on Zip Today and
"Folder Patootie" on Zip Tomorrow. While in Photoshop, you need the file
"Clippers" from "Folder A", for which you have an alias in your "Swiped
Artwork" folder on your hard drive. You choose Open, navigate to the
"Folder A" alias and you are asked to Insert Disk Zip Today. Fine. After
working on "Clippers" you want to save it into "Folder Patootie" on Zip
Tomorrow, for which you have an alias in your "My Masterpieces" folder on
your hard drive. You choose Save As, navigate to the alias for "Folder
Patootie", double-click on it, Zip Today pops out and the box Please Insert
Disk Zip Tomorrow appears. You do so, only to be greeted by the box Please
Insert Disk Zip Today, but Zip Tomorrow does not and will not eject.
Splat-period does nothing. Esc does nothing. Force Quit does nothing.
Eventually I hard Reboot with nothing to show for my labor.

To generalize- anytime I am asked to swap Zip disks, I get hosed. True for
anyone else, and if so, why?

Orange Micro cards will run Windows NT, I'm not sure about Reply cards.

Subject: E-mailing dictations / voice mail

Yes I am a dreamer...

I would love it if my e-mail program provided a button that would allow me
to use my PowerBook's built in speaker to record a message. I would then
e-address it traditionally, it would be sent as an encoded attatchment via
internet e-mail and the receiving e-mail program would recognize it as
encoded voice mail and put a "play" button in the text field of the new
message so the receiver would be able to play the message. I know this
would increase the bandwith demand of e-mail 10K fold but it would make
sending critical short bursts of information so easy for me that I know I
would use it.

What is the easiest way to accomplish this with the current state of
Macintosh (and also Wintel, Unix crossplatform compatible) technology? Is
anyone aware of any projects?

My PowerMac 6100 with recently installed System 7.5.3 (which worked fine
initially) has developed a few irritating habits: two of six drive
partitions (one on each of two external drives) show up twice on the
desktop, and behave as aliases would, though they are not. Also, when I
shutdown The Mac, it puts up the message "Please insert the disk: RAMDISK".
I get similar sequests to (re)insert a disk when I use diskcopy (when the
source disk first ejects). Any thoughts as to cause? Rebuilding the desktop
of the two drives eliminated the double icon problem temporarily, but it
returned a few days later.

Hello,

I currently own a Powermac 8500/120 with english 7.5.2. I am trying to run
Autocad R12 (for the Mac), a cad application that I often use at work on a
PC. Because this application requires an FPU, I have been using John Neil
Associates's PowerFPU, an FPU emulator for Powermacs. The emulator, which
is relatively inexpensive, is essentially useless for any serious work
because it is slow as molasses.

I have been thinking that there must be an alternate solution, possibly a
hardware solution, and was wondering if anyone knows of such a thing.

Any and all comments much appreciated.

I was informed that a Video card will provide a interface for the second

Any and all help will be much appreciated.

Al, it's not PB5300 specific, and it's almost certainly a damaged pair of
Desktop files, at least I'd think so. Some of your drag and drop apps
still have undamaged entries in the Desktop files and will still work, but
the ones which fail will have damaged entries.

(Uh... you've already completely rebuilt the Desktop... please disregard
_everything_ which follows ;-)

Grab File Buddy or File Typer or a disk editor :-) , decheck the Invisible
bits in the two Desktop files, trash the Desktop files and reboot.
Whenever I've seen this D & D problem, this is the fix. It makes sense
that it should be, as D & D functions partly through the links provided by
the desktop data base.

(Oh, the -down-boot the Finder method usually doesn't work
with this one, the Desktop files are usually too damaged by the time this
symptom occurs.)

Recently in another place I rashly described the above way of completely
rebuilding the Desktop files as the "simplest" method, and got taken to
task by numbers of people (including a friend ) for thinking that
TechTool 1.09 mightn't be the endall for this one. So I checked: ran
TechTool, zapped the Desktop files, let TechTool reboot and the system took
something like 8 minutes (!) to rebuild the desktops on 4 x 90M partitions.
No, there's known damage on those partitions...

Then I did it manually, by the "simple" method with Norton's editor.
Result: the expected 2 minutes total for the desktop rebuilds. That's over
about 5000 files, which ain't too bad. Just what does TechTool do as it
trashes those Desktop files, we wonders?

I haven't got it, but I believe there's a nice little dragn'drop called
"Show Desktop" by Daniel Azuma which renders Desktop files visible in one
fell sweep of the wrist. Now we're really talking "simple"...

hope this helps!

My first guess is that you have a 3rd party product like Now Menus (it allows
you to assign key strokes to any menu fuction). If you do, then do this to
remove the key stroke:

1) With the Mouse, go to the Application Menu and select the Finder.
2) While keeping the Finder selected, press the Delete key.

You can toggle the ability to assign key strokes to menu items (in Now Menus)
by opening the Control Panel, clicking on the Preferences button, and
deselecting the "Assign Hot Keys directly in menus" option.

This can be done. The hardest part is getting the files onto a 3.5 diskette.
After that, ClarisWorks will translate Appleworks files. The easiest way
(Iknow of) to get the files onto a 3.5 diskette from an Apple II is to use a
Diskette drive called "UniDisk" by Apple. The hard part about this is going to
be finding one (a UniDisk drive, that is). I suggest trying a company called

I don't know the rhyme or reason, but I've seen this a few times with System
7.5. You can get this to stop by A) Not having a Startup Screen or B) Using
different RAM. Again, I don't know why (I'm sure there's some technical
reason), but my guess is that it is certain types of RAM (that is not of the
greatest quality?) and whatever with System 7.5.
