Yo! The Info-Mac Network moves (slowly) into the late 20th century! We
have a web site!

We even have a small press thingy to announce it (and of course, I didn't put
it here cause you all know I don't post PR here!):

Almost all of the work there was done by our new archivist, Demitri (you can
mail him comments at [email protected]). He clearly put in a lot of work.
PHT is, graciously, hosting the site right now. When we get our own mac,
we will.

End the end, we hope that all the info-mac info you need: how to subscribe,
how to unsubscribe (horrors!), access mirrors, etc. will be up there. I doubt
it will ever be a search engine like the current mit hyper-archive: that
requires too much iron (and care/feeding).

The site has the basics of most of the information out there now. As it
evolves we will flesh it out with our own ideas and good suggestions from
you folks.

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Gordon (info-mac moderator)

Subject: [*] Female Eudora PRO Snd Replacer v4

The Female "Email Sound Replacer v4" is a utility that automatically
replaces your boring stock sounds that play when your electronic messages
have been retrieved.

Version 4 contains an attractive, yet professional-sounding female voice
in stereo that says "Your New Email Is Waiting." It sounds great on any
Macintosh, and now you can hear it every time you have new email.

The Email Sound Replacer v4 is available for Claris Emailer, Eudora Lite
and Eudora PRO. All three versions are available in both stereo
16-bit/44kHz and 8-bit/22kHz samples. The 8-bit versions can be
downloaded here, but the 16-bit versions are available only at the
Clixsounds WWW site at:

http://www.edmondsun.com/clix/

The replacer for Claris Emailer and Eudora Lite are automatic sound
replacers that simply require your dragging and dropping your emailer
program on top of the updater. Please note: You may want to apply the
updater to a copy of your emailer program to make sure you wish to keep
it, as you cannot undo the replacement. Please refer to the enclosed
instructions for more detailed information and assistance.

The Eudora Pro version can be used with any other email program that
allows user selection of system 7 sounds as email notification sounds.
To use the sound, simply drag the file to your closed System Folder,
allowing it to be placed into the system file. Then select the sound
through your settings as your new email sound. For more information,
read the enclosed instructions.

Subject: [*] File Toolkit for 4D, vs 1.1

Welcome to File Toolkit for 4D=AE, an extension package for those of you who
are serious about handling Finder objects within 4D applications.

Version 1.1 updates - 24 April 96

=46ixed a bug in ft_PutFileDlog that always returned -128 error in version 1=
.0.1.
ft_ReadFile was renamed ft_ReadText.
ft_ReadUntil was renamed ft_ReadTxtUntil.
ft_WriteFile was renamed ft_WriteText.
ft_ReadText now accepts a negative number of bytes to read, thus sparing
the call to ft_SetFilePos before reading when progressing backwards.
ft_LaunchAppl accepts a folder FSSpec as being the FSSpec to the document
to be launched with the application, allowing for example to select a whole
folder for a compacting application.
Speeded up fat files copy.
A "Create =9F" button was added to ft_GetFolderDlog in order to create a
folder and then select it.
ft_GetVolInfo now returns the volume cluster, i.e. the block size.
New commands ft_GetCurZone, ft_Zones2Array and ft_NBPLookup to get the
zones list and perform searches on the network (e.g. to find servers and
printers).
New command ft_GetFrontAppl indicating the "Foreground Process" application
and if it is 4D.
New commands ft_ReadShort, ft_ReadLong et ft_ReadBlob to read objects of
these types from a file.
New commands ft_WriteShort, ft_WriteLong et ft_WriteBlob to write objects
of these types in a file.
New command ft_GetMiscInfo to get various informations about the current
system and 4D application.

Version 1.0.1 updates - 12 February 96

Type changed to '4DPX' to improve compatibility with various 4D versions.
=46aster background copy (copy process) when the other processes do not need
CPU time.
=46ixed default pathname bug in ft_GetFileDlog, ft_PutFileDlog & ft_GetFolde=
rDlog.
=46ixed a bug in credit card number validity check in order form dialog.
Relooked splash screen.
Custom icon for File Toolkit for 4D=AE.

Please refer to the documentation for additional information about the new
commands.

Subject: [Q] L2 cache types/brands

Friends:

Does anyone know the straight dope on L2 caches? The L2 Cache Company
states that its architecture is inherently superior to others companies' L2
caches >. Not
surprisingly, some other vendors don't see it that way.

With so much marketing out there, I am finding it rather difficult to sort
the hype from the reality. What makes a "good" cache good? Does 7.5.3
make the whole debate over type-11 crashes obsolete anyway? Is the L2
Cache Company architecture really better, or are they all pretty much the
same?

A-ROSE by any other name?

TIA.

Does anyone know if the new release of FreePPP already is out? The last was

I searched at Info-Mac and Apple sites, but nothing. Please, email me if
you know where to get it.

Subject: [Q] Zip Drive Broken Heads

Has any Iomega Zip drive users experienced problems with their Zip drives
not recognising the disks? After inserting a disk into my 4 month old Zip
drive it made a continuous clicking noise. Then when I ejected the disk
using the button as it had not appeared on the desktop and inserted another
disk, the drive clicked twice but refused to read the disk. This continued
other disks inserted.

After contacting the dealer from where it was purchased, I was told they
had received a similar problem last week. They replaced that drive only to
find that the same problem occurred with the new drive which was then
replaced.

They are under the impression that the drive heads are being damaged by the
disks, rendering the drive unable to read the disk. However in my case the
disk which was inserted when this happened was a relatively new disk having
only been in the drive only about 4 times max. If it is a defective Zip
disk causing this how can one detect such a disk before inserting it into a
Zip drive?

Are these Zip drives really so fragile?

Is there a defective batch of Zip disks out there ready to kill the Zip
drives?

I would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced similar problems.

Peter O'Reilly

Subject: Apple IIe spreadsheet translation

A few issues back Raphael N. Levy asked about a problem he was having
translating data base files (in DIF format) created on an Apple IIe to
the Mac. Encouraged by his report to me of overwhelming response to his
question from the Info-Mac community, I pose a related problem: I have some
VisiCalc spreadsheets (which I have a vague recollection are also in DIF
format) on the Apple IIe partition of my LC III. I've tried opening them in
Excel (importing as a DIF file) and ClarisWorks, but both programs insist on
treating them as text files. In particular, the formulas appear as text.
Without going through an arduous manual reformatting, I can't view these
files as spreadsheets.

Thanks for any advice. Please reply to me and I will pass on what I
learn to anyone who is interested.

Subject: Audio CD Player

David Steiner recently wrote about his inability to get sound out of
an audio CD and his 7200 internal CD-ROM drive using Apple's Audio
CD Player. I'll bet dollars to donuts, David, that you don't have the
Sound control panel configured correctly. Open up the control
panel. If you select the Sound In item from the popup menu, you
will most likely see an icon entitled Built-in and an Options button.
Clicking on the Options button will display three input sources and
a checkbox labeled Play Through. Select the rightmost radio
button, Internal CD, and check the Play Through box. That's it! I'd
also check out the Apple Guide help for this control panel, which is
quite helpful.

It is not a dumb question: it would seem that Apple went out of their way
to hide this option. I was the "Mac guru" in my previous laboratory. At
that time we bought a brand-new Power Mac 7100 with built-in CD-ROM drive.
I worked at it for a couple of days before I offered $5 to anyone who could
show me how to turn on this feature. Fortunately, later that day I stumbled
on to the answer ;-) .

Open the Sound control panel.
Choose "Sound In" from the pop-up menu.
Click "Options...."
Make sure that "Internal CD" and "Play through" are selected.

This should do it. I am surprised that Apple doesn't ship the Macs with
this option selected. Why would anyone want anything else?

When the German version of System 7.5.3 becomes available to you, I
believe the update has this option correctly enabled (but check it to be
certain).

Good luck,
Clint

Subject: CHRP Macs

Because of Apple's inability to to provide a DOS card that will allow us to
use Windows NT or even Windows for Workgroups (After several abortive
attempts to install and to make a network connection, I finally went to the
Apple Help Desk, and was told that the DOS Card could not support either),
and because of our increasing requirement to be able to TRANSPARENTLY
communicate with our corporate Windows based internal communications
networks, it looks that we will be forced to give up our Macs "in favour
of" Pentiums.

The only possible relief in sight would seem to be the CHRP Macs, IF THEY
WORK! But based on Apple's lamentable record on supporting bread and butter
issues, I have my doubts, but am prepared to be reassured.

Has anyone actually seen a CHRP machine in action? Does it actually run
more than one operating System at the same time? Can it run NT? Can it
communicate over Windows networks in all modes? Or is another one of
Apple's overblown but typically crippled products?

When will fully functional CHRP machines be available?

By the way does anyone have Amelio's e-mail address? I would like send an
amplified version of this message to him.

Thanks.

I would appreciate your ideas on two phases of a data conversion challenge.
The source files are Appleworks (mostly word processor) residing on an Apple

The destination is Clarisworks or MS Word residing on a Powermac 6100. The
two phases are 1. transfering the information and 2. converting the file

I have found nothing but the opposite to be true. Gobal Village fax
software is far and away the best fax software I have used, and I've tried
MacCom Center, Delrina MacFax (or whatever), and Faxcillitate (bundled
w/Supra). I have owned both a TP Gold and now a Platinium. Whenever I have
had a problem, their tech support always responded in a timely manner and
have been extremely helpful. BTW, any problem I have ever had NEVER had
anything to do with fax capabilities, but data transmissions with a
particular ISP. My problem went away when I changed providers.

Just another experience,

I know many people refill their HP DeskWriter cartridges using refill kits.
Are such refill kits available for the StyleWriter 1200?

Our company is interested in computerizing our Point-of-Sale
activities. We are going to use a Filemaker Pro 3.0 database as our
POS software. It is going to be running on 2 PowerMac 6100/60's with
another one as a server. We need to find a Macintosh compatible cash
drawer which can be hooked into the serial, adb, or SCSI ports, etc.
Filemaker will then be able to open the drawer when needed.
We also need a Mac compatible receipt printer. It can be thermal or
impact, although thermal would be preferable.
If anyone out there has any real world experience with this type of
setup, or has suggestions or comments please e-mail me at

I 've experienced several problems with PC Exchange/MacLink Plus, and each
time it was a matter of extension conflicts. I use PCE so rarely that I
haven't bothered to isolate the conflict, I just shut down all but the
basics, reboot, do my business (everything fine just like in the old days)
then return to my blissfully ignorant, internally conflicted state.

So you might give Extension Manager an extreme try...

I recently installed sys. 7.5 on my trusty Quad. 900. Now I have, at least
an intriguing if not, dangerous problem. It was a clean install. On
startup things progress normally, the startup screen appears, etc. Then the
screen goes black and as each extension is loaded it flashes on to the
screen and then disappears to be followed by the next. When all are loaded
the back-ground screen arrives and all is normal again.
This only happens on a full start, a re-start is perfectly normal.
It was a clean installation although I have added stuff since, but this has
happened from the very first start.
Help me folks. I have to work on one of these weird dos things during the

In Symbol font:

Option-semicolon gives "is a superset of" without a bar below it.
Option-spacebar gives "is a superset of" with a bar below it.
Option-n, then Shift-A gives "is a subset of" without a bar below it.
Option-n, then Shift-O gives "is a subset of" with a bar below it.
