Subject: [*] ConvertMachine 1.0

This is the first release of ConvertMachine. It is a fat binary
meaning it runs on 68K machines and native on PPC machines.
It is released as $10 Shareware and registering and payment
can be made using email through Kagi Shareware. Different
fees apply for company and site licenses; see the Register
application.

It is mostly a batch processing utility to convert sound format files
to a desired type. This means it performs one or more of the
following without user interaction: decompression, resampling
(sample rate conversion), mixing (stereo to mono) and compression.

You don't need to worry about what format the file is in; all you
specify is the desired output format.

Finder Sound files (sfil), AIFF files, WAVE files, AU Mu-law and linear
and QuickTime Audio (Movies) can be freely converted.

Manually you can import off Audio CDs into any of the above formats.

You can save your popular Settings under as a menu item or as a
separate Settings file. The common web formats are flagged and
ready to use as defaults, such as audio/basic mono 8kHz mu-law.

After conversion files can be automatically sent to SoundMachine
for playing.

It needs QuickTime 2.1 and Apple's Sound Manager 3.1 or later.
If you have installed System 7.5.3 then, no worries, you have these.
If you want to get these or later extensions I have some convenient
ftp and other links on my Web pages.

Help: Use balloon help.

Report any bugs to [email protected]; I will definitely read each email but
responding to them may not be practical.

Subject: [*] Fluffy's Adventure 1.2

Fluffy's Adventure is a childrens adventure game. It has color
graphics, sound effects, music, an auto-scrolling main scene, and 14
levels. Games can be saved and restored. System Requirements:
Macintosh, 16 colors, System 7.x.

Fluffy and his good friend Wubbly were taking a boat ride when
they ran into a storm. Fluffy's boat sank off of an uncharted island.
They must now find a way to get back home.

The object of Fluffy's Adventure is to help Fluffy and Wubbly return
home safely. This is accomplished by finding all of the pieces
required to assemble a new boat and using it to return home.
Wubbly will appear from time to time and ask Fluffy for help, or tell
Fluffy that a piece of the boat is near by.

Although the island is uncharted, it isn't deserted. There are stores
where Fluffy can buy food and fix-it shops where broken tools can
be repaired. Candy will regenerate Fluffy if his health reaches 0.
Candy can be found at some levels, bought at stores or will be
awarded when the score reaches 3,000 and again at 6,000.

Subject: [*] Garcia's Guitars 1.1

Garcia's Guitars is a real groove. I've noticed a pronounced lack of
non-violent freeware for Macintosh Deadheads on this planet, man, and I
plan to change that.

Jerry comes back to earth and you make him run around the parking lot
sending guitars back to rock 'n roll heaven. The more guitars he hugs, the
more kharma he gets. The thing is, there's a buncha pigs all over the
place, flashing their badges and pistols and trying to be a real pain in
the pahooties. It sux, but that's life.

Also there's like, these cool bonus goodies, man. . .

Hookahs, Jack-O-Roses, and Glowing Sugarcubes, because - diggit, Jerry's
dead, man. If he's gonna come around and play games with you, dude, you
better make it worth his while.

I think you'll get a kick outta this game. I always laugh and laugh when I
play it! I'm laughing now just thinking about it.

The sprite-based animation is cool and the sounds are pretty neat, too.

Its colorful, did I mention that you need a color Macintosh for this
version? Oh, um yeah, well - y'do. If you want a black and white version,
drop me some e-mail and I'll do it for you. You're cool, I know I can trust
you. [email protected]

Thanx for being groovy, and if I run into the old-man before you do, I'll
tell him you said Hi!

Peace.

Here is I am a Talking File 1.0. I am a Talking File is a tiny applet

My intent in creating I am a Talking File was to have an easy way to have
speech files that behave like System 7 sound files --- double-click them,
and you hear them. Copies of I am a Talking File can be placed in
Startup Items, Shutdown Items, or Speakable Items, to add more

Subject: [*] Mac-FTP-list Version 4.1.1

This is the latest {May 1,1996} version this report and should replace
the previous version of mac-ftp-list.txt.

This is a update {May 1,1996} to Mike Gleason and Bruce Grubb's Mac FTP
list. It lists over 220 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes), over
65 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs
decompress and decode which files. Also there is a section on how to
use non-Mac files. This archive contains both the text and html versions.

Please note that the html part is actually four crosslinked files:
mac-ftp-list.html, ftp-list.html, www-section.html, and site-notes.html
that require HTML Browser such as Lynx, Mosaic or NetScape to view.

Must be in a monospaced font to be readable; Courier 10pt is recommended,
though Monaco 9pt or a PC equivalent can be used instead. Needs StuffIt
Expander or equivalent {unsitins.exe} to decompress.

Please send newly discovered macintosh sites (with IP numbers and
directories to check if possible), bug fixes, and comments to:

Subject: [*] QuikHide v2.1

Ever had a bunch of programs open and all your screen covered with

open documents and you need to go to the desktop quickly ? You'd have

to go "Finder" menu item and then select "Hide Others" or option-click

on the desktop, right?(BTW, option-clicking on the desktop only hides

the frontmost app) Not any more - enter QuikHide - a little extension

that does all this for you. Click on the red dot(which may be changed

to a cool icon in the future ) in the right corner of the menu bar and

you're on the desktop instantly and all apps and their documents are

hidden from view.

Now you can option-drag the dot around the menubar to find the position

that's optimal for your configuration. Also fixes a bug where the INIT

file wasn't closed and later could not be accessed .

Subject: [*] Sokoban 2.2, the classic game/puzzle

This is version 2.2 of my implementation of the classic game
"Sokoban". In this game, you have to move treasures through a twisty
maze. What makes it hard is that you can only push the treasures, so
you may have to move other treasures out of the way first to get
behind the one you want to push. And moving those treasures out of
the way of the first treasure might move them behind another one or
into a corner, and then there's no way to move the treasure out of the
corner. So you'll need to think ahead (or at least Undo a lot).

This version is FreeWare and includes the 50 original levels along with
about 300 more and features
- color or monochrome graphics
- infinite undo
- powerful mouse movement controls (in case you get tired of the arrow keys)
- the ability to create your own levels
- balloon help for the menus
- can read files used by MacSokoban and JSokoban

System requirements: any Mac running System 7 or higher (even a Mac Plus!).

Changes since version 2.1:
- Drag and drop movement: you tell it which piece to move and where to
put it, and the game figures out the path (but only if you don't have to
push something else out of the way first)
- Snazzy new graphics.
- Saves and loads best solutions and displays your best score for a level.
- Reorganized menus to make more sense.
- Fixed Boxxle level #81 and Simple Sokoban level #16.
- Can copy or paste a sequence of moves to or from the game.
- Gratuitous 3D rendered graphic in documentation file.

WWW Sites 2.0 is shareware. The cost is $5.00.

Perhaps Internet surfers more experienced than I can remember all of those
weird addresses. I can't. I also got tired of keeping track of all the little
scraps of paper where I had them written down. So, WWW Sites was born.

WWW Sites is a small HyperCard stack which holds the World Wide Web addresses
you want to keep. It allows for saving, sorting, printing and one click
copying of the URL's (UnRememberable Locations). There is also room for
notes. I keep it running in the corner of my screen so I can jump to it when
I want one of the addresses stored there. It can also create an HTML file
with all of your URL's ready for clicking. (Bill Booz scripted this. Thanks,
Bill.) It can now capture or launch a URL from Netscape 2.0. (Sorry it does
not do this in the AOL browser)

Welcome to to the world of Netscape Navigator 2.02! I have had this same
trouble, the only solution was to reinitialize the drive. Sometimes, if you
notice the trouble early enough, clearing Netscapes cache and trashing the
directory makes the prob go away. Apple Sys. Update 2.0 recognizes the
problem and won't install until repaired. I don't have any fancy HD tools,
but I can't really recommend Norton or FWB for the job anyway.

Save the file in RTF format. In the rtf formatted file, do a global search
and replace replacing " _" with " {\b ", then do a global search and replace
of "_ " with "}". (The inclusion of the spaces is vital.) Save that file,
close it, re-open it letting Word interpret the RTF format, and it's done.

Why not just stick to your "local" provider and make the Florida based
server forward your e-mail for you.

If you have access to a unix shell on your account and you are a bit
familiar to unix it's quite simple:

make a plain text file called ".forward" in your home directory which
contain s only one line: "[email protected]", which should match
your e-mail address for your "local" provider. After returning to your
original location just remove or rename the .forward file. Now there is no
more need to log in to your "remote" provider.

Note the starting dot for the filename!

If you're not familiar with unix this can be quite complicated, however I
will try to mail you a derscription on request.

Regards, joe.

P.S. for reading mail you also can log in to your remote provider from your
local account by using telnet. There is a good Macintosh telnet client
available for free: NCSA Telnet; version 2.6 is the most recent one if I'm
not mistaken...

I loathe Word.... but in 6.0, there is a wildcard search and replace
funtion, which lets you do something like search for _(*)_ and replace
with \1 (style bold). Quick and easy.

I don't know of any easy way to do this in Word 5, sorry.

One possibility:

1. Open the document in Word and save it in RTF format.

2. Open the RTF file with any good text editor (e.g. BBEdit Lite).

3. Replace the string "_" with the string "{\b".
This will replace the begin underscore with the RTF tag for bold.

4. Replace the string "_" with the string "}". This will
replace the end underscore with the RTF end-of-format tag.

5. Save (make sure the text editor isn't set to replace automatically
endlines upon opening or saving or to do any hard wrapping) then
open the file in Word. Word will interpret the RTF format and the
words previously between underscores will appear in bold face.

And there are probably other ways too.

Dear Mac-ophiles,

I have the feeling that this is going to be one of those questions that
is going to make me look dumb (as in, "I shoulda thought of that!") but
I have to ask it anyway.

We have these nice new PM 7200's with CD players but I can't for the life of
me get the CD Audio player to work. The software starts ok and, when we put
a CD in, it makes like it is trying to play (current track number is lit,
the timer starts counting, etc.) but no sound comes out. We have tried
headphones and speakers plugged into the audio out jack but we can't
hear the music. We can, with the proper settings, hear the system beep
>From the external speakers so it can't be a hardware problem.

So tell me, folks: What have I missed? Is there some setting somewhere that
I need to know about or another extention, or what?

Hm, the first thing I'd try is this: Go to Control Panels>Sound. Choose
Sound In>Options.... Click on the CD option and check the Playthrough
option. Now it should work.

I'll take a guess. Go to the sound cdev and pull down the 'Sound
In' menu. Choose 'Options' and set the 'Internal CD' radio button and the
'Playthrough' checkbox.

Subject: Did PC exchange change behavior?

I used to be able to take uuencoded files from my mac and write them to a
PC disk (using PC exchange) for use on a PC.

If I attempt to do that now, the uuencoded files when viewed from the PC
are missing linefeeds.

I understand that the presence or absence of linefeeds is the difference
between a mac file and and PC file.

However, this used to work for me. I'm not sure, but I think it broke when
I upgraded to 7.5.3.

I've already tried trashing my PC exchange preferences, and various
wrapping options with other utilities, to no avail.

Any ideas?

You can email to almost any newsgroup via an email-to-Usenet gateway. I'm
not sure why utexas closed down their gateway, but there are many others
you can try instead. See below for the relevant section from "Accessing the
Internet by E-Mail FAQ". You can find the full version in the Internet

at the Ohio State University

Note that there'll be a delay in getting your message posted to the
newsgroups via a gateway. I've found the yale gateway to be the fastest. It
also seems to support most of the newsgroups. I use this method to
simultaneously post to different mailing lists and newsgroups. However, an
off-line newsreader may be a better choice in your case.

You might want to look a little further than Global Village. I've never had
anything but grief attempting to send/receive faxes on my TelePort Gold,
using their fax software.

This has been true of all the Global Village modems I have worked with -
three TelePort Golds, one PowerPort Gold, and one PowerPort Bronze.

As they all work fine as data modems, I assume the problem is the fax
software.

Forget about dealing with their tech support -- it's non-existent.

Hmmm... strange. So I tried contacting this site and it worked! So what
is wrong with the sites I'm trying to reach? Well, a typical example of a
URL that _doesn't_ work for me is: gopher://gldfs.cr.usgs.gov:79/0quake
(this is a gopher site run by the US Geological Survey that provides
earthquake data). Works fine in Netscape 2.0, but 2.01 and 2.02 refuse. I
suspect maybe the second colon in this URL could be the source of the
problem?

I fear that this may be straying a tad from really Mac-specific discussion
into the arcana of HTML, but if anyone has an idea, please clue me in!

Folks, I'm just barely getting used to Leslye's new PB5300cs. I suspect
this will be only the first of many questions to those of you who have
gone before. It's System 7.5.3 BTW.

I notice that some drag-n-drop applications don't. I like my custom
folder icons. Picon had been my app of choice for such things. No luck.
It is *purely* drag-n-drop. Won't launch upon being dragged onto. I went
to the I-M archives and got a couple other folder-pretty-uppers. Nuthin
in d-n-d mode. Folder Icon Maker is not purely d-n-d, so I can launch it
and pretty up folders from its menus.

No, I'm not stymied. But I am curious. Has anyone else seen this d-n-d
non-behavior on a 5300? Is there a fix? Is this a bug or a feature? Have
I done something terribly stupid and deserve to die?

And no. This doesn't happen with *all* d-n-d apps. Stuffit Expander, por
ejemplo, works like a champ.

Curious minds want to know.

Jon, the common cause is almost certainly an underlying one: your HD driver
software. You need to be using the latest version of Drive Setup, 1.0.4,
since your HD is an IDE drive in that Performa isn't it (at least, I think
so...)

I've not got my 7.5 Update 2 Syquest cartridge to hand at the moment, but I
think Drive Setup 1.0.4 is on the first disk in a Utilities folder (others
will correct me if it isn't;-) But it's also at ftp://support.apple.com in
/utilities if you can get there between Type 11's :-(

When you've got Drive Setup 1.0.4, do a "Very Clean Install". Back up your
data and applications, and format (and partition) your drive. Then install
7.5.2 and do Update 2. Restore your apps and data. I think you'll find
the Type 11's will have gone away forever...

Ah, and by the way, if you want to feel _very_ happy with your Mac again,
just watch someone using Win3.1 upgrade to '95, and see the trouble they
have installing drivers... It's cruel to say this, but it feels good! :-)

This is generally due to an extension conflict - turn off all unnecessary
control panels and extensions and try again. CD-ROM drivers for third party
CD drives tend to be the worst culprits, although I've also seen similar
problems with printer and PowerBook software.

At the print shop for which I am graphic designer, we have an occasional
need for color proofs. Most of our work is done in FreeHand 5.5, and most
files are under 100K: rarely do we do anything really fancy.

Our main concerns are:

* Cost
* Prints on plain 20# bond paper (not special stock)
* Photographic-quality printed scans (we'd like to print color business cards)

Secondary concerns:

* Speed
* Prints on 8.5x11 card stock
* Prints on 11x17 plain paper

I'm thinking a 720-dpi inkjet would probably suffice for the main
concerns, with Freedom of Press installed for when we do weird PostScript
stuff (which is rare). I understand, though, that inkjets can be rather
slow. Suggestions?

You should change the SCSI id on the used hard drive. How it's done
depends on the hard drive's make and model, which you didn't specify.
For instance, on some Quantum drives all one needs to do is place
jumpers on one or more of three connectors. Check the manufacturer's web
page for information.

You should also keep in mind that, if the used HD was an internal drive,
then in all likelihood it is terminated. If the used HD is not going to
be placed at the end of your SCSI chain, then you should remove the
termination. Again, the exact procedure depends on your drive's make and
model. E.g., on some Quantum drives you need to pull out two or three
socketed SIP resistors; on others you need to remove a jumper.

Actually, Mike, Symbol contains EXACTLY what you're looking for. It's =

hidden behind a somewhat bizarre key combination, though. To get the "is =

a subset of" without the bar below, type OPTION-N then SHIFT-A. For that =

WITH the bar, type OPTION-N then SHIFT-O (alpha not zero). For the "is =

NOT a subset of, type OPTION-` then SHIFT-A.

The Key Caps DA does give indication that key sequences exist - it just =

doesn't make it intuitive IMHO. Here's how it works:

Open Key Caps and select the Symbol font from the Font menu. Hold down =

the Option key and you will notice that five other keys on the onscreen =

keyboard are surrounded by a gray border - e, u, i, n, and `. =97While =

holding Option, press n. The onscreen keyboard will now show 4 key =

positions surrounded by a black border. If you hold down the Shift key =

at this point, you'll see your desired symbols in two of these =

positions.

But there's a simpler way - Get one of the font display desk accessories =

or utilities like KeyFinder from Norton/Symantec, Big Caps from =

Dubl-Click, or the shareware Control Panel PopChar (Info-Mac archives). =

Any one of these will allow you to look at (and access) ALL the =

characters in a font.

Yes, it does. The two characters you mentioned are ASCII 204 and 205 in
Symbol font; you can type them on a US keyboard with the combinations
and .

To see all the characters in a font you can use a utility such as
PopChar or KeyFinder. Alternatively, you can keep an Excel document to
show all the characters in a font. Use Data>Series... in one column to
build a series from 33 to 255 (the first 32 ASCII numbers are control
characters and the 33rd is the blank space), then use Excel's CHAR
function in the next column to show the actual characters. By changing
the font used for the second column you can see all the characters in
that font.

First of all, many thanks to those who have taken the time to answer.

The question was: How does one get audio CDs to play on a 7200?
I did say that the question would probably make me look dumb but I did
get the answer:

In the Sound CP, under Sound In, click Options and choose Internal

Of course, after embarassing myself publicly, I should be allowed to offer
lame excuses....

Actually, I _did_ look in the sound CP but was laboring under the (admittedly
false) impression that this was a sound _output_ problem not an _input_

Oh, well...
All's well that ends well.

Clarisworks output. I tried re-installing the old Stylewriter
extension and rebooting, but that had no effect. I'd appreciate any
advice. Thanks! -- Dan Weinreb [email protected]
