Subject: [*] A Find Alternative 1.4

What is the Find Alternative?

A Find Alternative is a shareware utility designed to help users
choose which utility they want to use in place of the System 7.5 Find
File. Currently, the Find Alternative supports users of Norton Fast
Find, File Buddy, Find Pro III, the System 7.5 Find File and
UltraFind. If there is a utility you use for file searching and you'd
like the Find Alternative to support it, please contact me at one of
the the adresses below.

If you are using a version of the system software lower than System
7.5.3, then you must use ResEdit to install the Find Alternative.
Detailed instructions are given how to perform the installation, but
if you are uneasy with using ResEdit, may I humbly suggest upgrading
to Apple's latest version of the system software.

What's new in version 1.4 of the Find Alternative?

The Find Alternative 1.4 is now easier to install than ever. Thanks to
self-running patches, the Find Alternative now perform the
installation for you.

The Find Alternative has been renamed. Formerly known as "Stefan's
Find Alternative", the Find Alternative has been taken under the wing
of Stellaris Illustration and Design, a media publisher and software
development company.

If you want to give the Find Alternative to a friend or upload it to a
BBS, then including this Read Me is a must. If you are authoring a
book or CD-ROM and would like to include this software with it, please
contact me in advance.

Subject: [*] Chiral 1.0.4

Webster defines Chiral as "a kind of symmetry found in atomic particles
that is not superimposable on its mirror image." Ambrosia redefines this
dry scientific adjective with a mind melter of a puzzle game.

MacUser awarded this new definition of fun with their Shareware of the
Year Award for 1994. MacWeek says "With the release of Chiral, Ambrosia
is breaking its creative bonds...With repeated play comes an appreciation
of the subtle beauty and elegant sophistication of its design." Inside
Mac Games calls Chiral "a uniquely creative action-strategy game that is
just as much fun to watch as it is to play."

Chiral is a fusion between the scientific concept of atomic bonding and
the addictive game play of Tetris. Players are challenged to form bonds
between atoms to create inert molecules before the atoms overflow from a
vial. Points are scored by the complexity of the molecular pattern and
the speed with which it is assembled. Not to worry, a doctorate in atomic
chemistry is not needed; an interactive tutorial, Chiral Basics, is
included with the package. Chiral has six separate difficulty settings
and twenty four levels of puzzling play, for a grand total of 144 screens
of mind-boggling fun and excitement.

This mind-testing Ambrosia program is the fruit of a collaboration
between Macintosh developer Trevor Powell and Ambrosia Software's
prolific founder Andrew Welch. Chiral is a combination of high resolution
256 color graphics, funky digitized sound effects, and addictively
puzzling game play.

Subject: [*] Chiral 1.0.4 Updater

Ambrosia Software, Inc. has just released a Chiral 1.0.4 Updater. This
updater only works if you already have an earlier version of Chiral. If
you do not already have Chiral, you need to download the complete Chiral
1.0.4 package.

This updater brings Chiral up to Chiral 1.0.4, the latest version which
contains a number of bug fixes and adds a few features. All of the files
in the Chiral 1.0.4 Update should be extracted into your existing Chiral
folder to properly upgrade Chiral to version 1.0.4.

The following is a list of the bugs that were fixed in Chiral 1.0.4:

-- Fixed a bug in the Sound_Tool that would cause it to require
Sound Manager 3.0, when in fact, it isn't needed.

-- Updated the version and FAQ information

Subject: [*] Classic Gin Rummy v.1.0 - Card Game

Are you -
Tired of playing solitaire games (and not winning)?
Looking for a relaxing card game to switch to while your spreadsheet
recalculates?
You ready to be challenged by an opponent who shows no mercy?

Soul Fry Software is happy to announce that we can cure all your needs
(and/or obsessions) with Classic Gin Rummy - the Macintosh
implementation of the popular and addictive two-player card game.

With a clean, uncluttered, and true-to-life interface, play against
the mere wimp of a Gin player featured in this unregistered version
(but don't take it personally if you still lose). Then spring for the
fully-registered version ($12) and take on a "regular guy," or a
merciless, cold, calculating opponent whose only purpose in life is to
strip you and your family of all dignity.

Classic Gin Rummy plays on all 68020 or better Macs (including
PowerMacs), looks great in 256 or 1000s of colors (and plays in 2-16
colors, too), and offers many customizable features of game play. It
takes up only a meg of disk space and boots up in 1900K of RAM.

Been awhile since you shuffled the deck for a game of Gin Rummy?
Check out the included "Guide to Classic Gin Rummy" - it'll get you up
and running in no time.

Subject: [*] Mercutio MDEF 1.3b8

Description
===========
The Mercutio MDEF is a Menu DEFinition resource that allow developers to
easily and elegantly extend the power of their application menus. These
MDEFs allow menus to have multiple-modifier key-equivalents
(e.g. shift-command-C), custom icons, item callbacks, and other goodies.

Major feature additions and changes since 1.2 are:

- Support for window font/size: Mercutio now correctly draws popup
menus in the current font and size. This means you can use Mercutio
for Geneva 9-pt popup menus and the like.
- Graphic icons for non-printing keys: non-printing key equivalents
such as page up/ down, home/help, etc. can be drawn as text or as
icons that look like the keys on the extended keyboard.
- Noticeable speed-up on text-only menu items.
- Substantially increased stability; fixed several memory-related bugs.
- Various cosmetic changes, optimizations and minor bug fixes.
- New software license -- please read as it defines the terms under
which you may use Mercutio.

Other changes and notes about this beta release are in the
"About Mercutio 1.3" file included in the archive.

The Mercutio MDEF works under System 6.0.4 or later, with or without
Color QuickDraw. Mercutio is fully compatible with System 7, and
supports all the features of the system MDEF. Integrating the MDEF
into your program is shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Subject: [*] PPPremier Timer 1.2B; a PPP timer

PPPremier Timer is a nifty gizmo that has a real function: it allows
you to quickly and easily open and close your PPP connection on your
Macintosh, while keeping track of how much time you accrue online.
PPPremier Timer=BCs best feature may be its streamlined customizable
appearance--it looks just like the display on your VCR or clock radio.
You can also choose any sound you like to play when PPP opens and
closes.

Version 1.2B replaces all previous versions, adds several features,
and fixes a couple of serious bugs. All users should upgrade. The
most recent version is always available at:

_What's New?_
(new since version 1.1.3B)
- Added new appearance options--size of digits, placement of buttons.
- Added 100+ hours option.
- Timer now =84clings=BE to the monitor corner to which it is closest--it
keeps its position relative to the corner, even when the monitor size
is increased.
- Redesigned Preferences Dialog--it is now movable, appearance changes
take effect immediately, and the timer continues to time while the
dialog is open.
- Changed appearance of buttons, and brightened some digit colors.
- Added ability to override automatic connection on launch and
disconnection on quit with option key.
- Added more informative handling of errors with sound playing.
- Fixed a bug which could prevent the sounds from playing, or cause a
crash when the sounds were played.
- Fixed a bug which could prevent the timer from being dragged off of
the main monitor.
- Fixed a bug which could cause the timer to be off screen if it was
started on a smaller monitor.

_Requirements_
PPPremier Timer requires System 7 or greater, Color QuickDraw (i.e. a
68020 or better; does not require color display), and MacPPP (or
equivalent) and all its requirements.

PPPremier Timer is MacTCP and OpenTransport compatible.

_Comments, questions, bugs:_

PPPremier Timer may be included on the AMUG and info-mac CD ROMs.

Subject: [*] SoundApp 2.0.2

I'm happy to announce the availability of SoundApp 2.0.2. SoundApp is the
premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is
suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the
popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite
sound samples and stand-alone usage. SoundApp remains freeware, so you
may use it at no cost. Information regarding licensing the conversion
and playback routines can be found in the About Box documentation.

SoundApp 2.0 has been mailed to the popular "macgifts" list, and should
appear on Info-Mac and the University of Michigan's archive sites in a
few days. In addition, you can download it directly via the WWW from:

SoundApp 2.0.2 fixes the following problems:

* Problems with mono IMA WAVE files,
* Problems playing very short files via double buffering, and
* Crashing problems on PowerPC Macs due to a bug in Apple's header files.

SoundApp 2.0 requires the following:

* At least a 68020 or PowerPC-based Macintosh (sorry 68000 users!),
* System 7.0 or greater, and
* Sound Manager 3.1 or greater (3.1 can be obtained from Apple and 3.2
is included in System 7.5.3).

In addition, the following optional items are recommended:

* QuickTime 2.0 or greater for QuickTime support,
* The Drag Manager for drag and drop use in the Play Lists (part of
System 7.5 and later),
* A PowerPC-based Macintosh for MPEG support and better performance.

Please note, I have no plans to support System 6.x, 68000-based Macs,
MPEG on 680x0-based Macs or earlier versions of the Sound Manager,
sorry.

Subject: (Q) SCSI Manager 4.3.1 and my IIcx

Dear net,

I've got round to reading some Apple stuff that says that SCSI Manager 4.3.x
only works on Quadras and above. So what's it doing in my system folder
in my IIcx? (I suspect it's because I did a custom install and said wow
that's neat, must have that.) (But I've got a nagging feeling that I installed
some other software that said I had to install SCSI Manager 4.3 first.)

So is it (a) contributing to disk problems I get from time to time
or (b) recognising it's on a 68030 and keeping quiet?

I suspect my disk drivers are not 4.3 compatible, but I'm having some
difficulty finding out.

Regards, Bob

Subject: [Q] Plethora of type 11 errors

I upgraded to system 7.5.3 with system update 2.0 on my Performa 6218CD (8
MB RAM, 1 GB hard drive) and was rewarded with a multitude of type 11
errors. I did a clean re-install of system 7.5.2 from the Performa system
CD, then did an easy install of system update 2.0. There are no extensions
or control panels other than those from Apple. If the computer is started
and only Finder is running, the system will hang in one to two hours,
reporting a type 11 error. The only option is to restart. If other
programs are running, such as Eudora, I see the same problem after an hour
or two. I haven't found a common cause or program that seems to trigger
these crashes. Can anyone suggest what is going on here? I have never had
so much trouble with a Macintosh in 8 years!

Subject: A tricky text substitution question...

This might seem odd, but I need to be able to replace sections of a Word
document which might look like:

...and he _demanded_ the money right away or...

where the word (or words) between the underscore ("_") should be turned to
bold face and, ideally, the underscores deleted. I didn't see an obvious way
to do this with Find/Replace in Word. Anyone have any other ideas (the file
is originally text transmitted over the Internet which is why it has this
funny convention)?

Any (preferably easy) way to do this would be greatly appreciated...

> I need to restart a Mac unattended at the same time every night.

The solution I use is Chris Johnson's (author of Gatekeeper) cron
utility
(http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperAr ... -10d13.hqx)

It's comparable to the unix cron command, and is very powerful when
combined with the KeyQuencer macro utility. Even without Keyquencer, the
basic cron package will allow you to restart your Mac at predetermined
times. Note that if the Mac has frozen, it may not be able to restart by
itself though.

Subject: Detailed Bronx NY address-finder map prog (A)

Sit down in a comfortable chair and prepare yourself for a big
adventure. Try calling DeLorme Mapping at 1-800-452-5931.
I have their Street Atlas USA Version 2.0. It only has the maps with
street house numbers (but even in the Bronx). You click on a palette button
"place" and put in "Bronx, NY" and it zooms from a global view of the US
to the Bronx. Then you click on street and check the box for numbers and
put in the street name and it allows you to select the block number you
want greyed to find.
They had other fancier cd programs for the portable PC that hooked
into gps satellites and gave you "breadcrumbs" to help you find your way
back like Hansel and Gretel. They probably have all sorts of wierd and
wonderful map programs.
I made a newton program to take their maps and put on newton which I
coordinate to gps satellite reception (but probably couldn't get a line
of sight to the right number of satellites for good satellite geometry in
NYC). Also, batteries tend to run down on serial communication between
gps receiver and newton, so I have everything hooked up to adapters in my
car, which you may not want to drive in NYC!
We have gps tracking of airport shuttles in Dallas, so they can
instantly find a shuttle near me if they goof on a schedual. So, you
don't have to go to emergency vehicle level to find out people who use
the latest technology not to get lost.
In summary, Delorme can tell you what features you get from their
specialization in maps, but they probably won't wrap it up in a
specialized client data base program. cd's are mastered in bulk and
such specialed suites don't get on them.
You are specialized in your interest and you must pick the specialized
suite of programs from, I believe, different companies. Of course, if
there are enough of people like you so that there is a market base, you
could form a corporation to subcontract to Delorme Mapping and business
database companies to make such a cd. That is if you could coordinate
with each other and form such a corporation.
So, I think it was a good idea you try to field such a company on the
internet. I don't know what would have been considered the wisdom of
exposing such consortium interests to too great a public in the past.
Some fellow lecturing at Texas Instruments suggested that such
consortiums would be considered wise in the future and be constructed on
the internet, distributed employment.
Good luck.

Eudora is email-only, so you can't use it to access Usenet groups (except=
for some newsgroups that are set up to allow e-mail subscriptions).

Have you looked at NewsHopper? It's a commercial newsreader, but you can=
download a demo version whose only restriction is that you can't subscribe=
to more than 5 newsgroups at a time. It fully supports offline operations,=
filters, etc., and has a decent interface. It also provides options to=
download all new messages, or to download just the subjects & authors so=
that you can decide later which messages are to be downloaded. Filters can=
also be set to automatically mark messages for download based on the=
subject line or author.

I think the demo can be found at .

Our lab is running a ethernet network. One computer is connected to the

on the internet. If we get our server (Workgroup 80) on the net can the
other computers access email and netscape all at one time or do we need
some hardware/software. We're located in the rainforest and don't have
any easy access to stores, etc. Therefore we'd like to know what to do
before we jump into things.

Subject: PB 100 or 140 screen in a 170?

We have a PowerBook 170 with a broken active-matrix display. The computer
seems to work fine otherwise. Apple wants over $800 to replace the display
with a new active-matrix unit. Since the whole computer is only worth about
$800, we would like to try to find a more cost-effective solution to the
problem.

Has anyone out there successfully installed a PowerBook 100 display in a 170?
Do the two displays use the same type of connector? Will the smaller area
of the 100 display cause problems?

Will PB 14x and 16x displays work in the 170?

Subject: PPP, TCP Help

To whom it may concern;

I am writing to you as a last resort. I obtained your address from the
Internet Starter Kit, Second Edition, by Adam C.Engst. I am a Mac LC575
user in MooseJaw Sask. (please no jokes) and I am unable to find anyone
around here that seems to understand my system and the problems I am
having. The local unix server I am using and paying is not much help (no
help actually).
Here is the problem;

I am trying to download shareware, in particular Netscape. I have been
using Mosiac, Macweb, Fetch and Anarchie. When a number of attempts to
download Netscape, or any file over 200k, failed using Mosiac I started
using the FTP software, Anarchie. I was fortunate enough to download Fetch
>From an FTP site but that success has been rare.

I have reloaded the TCP and PPP software and rechecked my modem
(supraFAXmodem 144LC) the modem strings all are set as per the instructions
in the Starter Kit. The main problem in the downloading process is after a
normal connection and what seems to be a normal 1200-1400 bit persec
download rate after 500,000 bits of a 2.7 meg file the download rate ceases
to increase and just counts down to zero. I have not successfully
downloaded any large file in countless trys. I have tried late at night and
early morning to download with what appeared to be early success but then
the download stops. The modem sometimes falls off line but I think that is
normal from my experience on other machines but generally the modem stays
connected but doesnt transfer data.

I can connect and e-mail fine through my server and surf the net, but I
can't download anything. What am I doing wrong!

If anyone can help me or has heard of this type of problem before I would
be eternally grateful for some assistance in solving the problem.. I can
not seem to find what is causing the problem. I have thought of line noise
but would'nt that affect the other activities while on the Web? Also I
don't know what I can do about it.

Subject: Set notation font?

We are trying to type a document that includes mathematical set notation.
Apple's Symbol font includes almost every symbol we need, but for some reason
it does not include the symbols for 'is a subset of' (one of these symbols
looks like a sideways U with the opening facing to the right and the other is
the same as the first with a horizontal bar underneath). Symbol font
contains similar characters, but they open to the left rather than to the
right.

Is there an Apple font, a public domain font, shareware font, or (last
resort) a commercial font that includes the symbols for 'is a subset of'?

Thanks for your help! Please replay directly to me (and to the list as well

I have been trying to dial out of our LAN from my Mac IIFX workstation =

Each time either application calls up MacTCP, my IIFX hangs when MacPPP =

The modem is installed on a *Communications Server* and is one of several =

Subject: What happened to my LaserWriter capability?

I have a Color StyleWriter 2400 on a 6115CD with 16MB of RAM and a
350MB HD, along with a Zip Drive and Iomega Transportable Pro 90. I
have successfully installed 7.5.3, QuickDraw GX (the latest), Adobe
Acrobat Reader/ATM (the latest), etc. It all works a treat.

But last night I wanted to create a PS file from FileMaker Pro 2.x for
the first time since the installs. I always do it that way, and print
it at work. But last night the Chooser didn't offer me the option of a
LaserWriter any more. I have the newest LaserWriter 8 and another one
(I forget the name) in the "Extensions" folder (and removed/replaced
them just in case). I no longer have a LaserWriter Desktop Printer icon
either (which doesn't bother me a bit).

Any ideas how to get my PS file generation capability back? Is there
another way besides using the print driver to generate a PS file?

Thanks...Gary
