Subject: [*] About This Particular Mac 2.02
About This Particular Macintosh (ATPM) is a well-written, fun, quirky
electronic magazine about the *personal* computing experience, the
Macintosh experience. It comes out monthly, as close to the 15th as we
can manage, in DOCMaker stand-alone format. We owe ATPM's existence to
those everyday Mac users who share with us their stories, anecdotes,
letters, pictures and reviews, which we are only too happy to publish.
After all, this magazine is about *your* particular Macintosh.

Subject: [*] CivHackPowerMac 1.0
CivHackPowerMac-1.0 is "CivHackPCI" renamed to more accurately describe
its function now that System 7.5.3 has been found to contain the same
incompatability which prevented Microprose Civilization from running on
macintoshes running System 7.5.2. All Power Macintoshes have been
experiencing trouble running Civilization under the latest OS release.
Specifically, CivHackPowerMac is a tiny system extension which prevents
Microprose's Macintosh Civilization game from crashing with a type 11
error at the opening menu on PowerPC macintoshes running System 7.5.2 or
7.5.3. This extension has been in use by the general public since 2/96 and
no one has reported any System conflicts to my knowledge. The extension
itself patches an incompatability between Civilization and Quickdraw in
Systems 7.5.2 and 7.5.3 that resulted in this crash. This file does not
seem to be required for 68k (non-PowerPC) macintoshes to run Civilization.
This file is a binhexed stuffit archive containing a System extension
which may be installed by dragging it onto your System Folder and
restarting your machine. There is also a short README file.
This extension was written by Gavriel State, . I was
asked to post it by the author.

Subject: [*] DragThing 1.6, an Internet-aware application dock
DragThing is an application dock designed to tidy up the icons littering
your desktop. Simply drag an application from the Finder onto an empty
square in a dock and then drag documents onto it as normal. In addition,
the docks can contain files, folders, disks and servers and there is
also a option to display the currently running processes in a special
dock.
New in 1.6 is the ability to store and organise URLs in docks and
many other enhancements.
It requires at least System 7.5 (or 7.1 with Drag & Drop, AppleScript
and the Scriptable Finder) and a Macintosh with a minimum of a 68020 or
PowerPC 601 processor. Storing URLs in docks requires Internet Config 1.1
or later. The application is distributed as a fat binary with both
regular 68K and native PowerPC versions included.
---
What's new in DragThing 1.6?
* Now you can drag URLs into docks and double-click them to open with
Internet Config installed.
* Now you can import HTML files to create docks of URLs and export them
to HTML again.
* Now you can rearrange the layer folder tabs by dragging and can move
layers between docks.
* Now you can change the name of dock items without changing the name of
the original.
* Now you can copy and paste custom icons for dock items.
* Added option to double the speed of drawing docks showing item names
by caching data in memory.
* Added option to double the speed of startup by not checking for
bad dock items at startup.
* Added options to show the full path, icon and filetype of the current
item at the bottom of the dock.
* Added option to use the real system WDEF (and worked round a problem
caused by Aaron 1.3.x).
* Added option to turn off zoom rects.
* More routines for detecting and fixing problems with the Preferences file.
* Much faster live dock window growing.
* Much smarter hot corners on multiple monitor systems.
* New about window with links to the DragThing web page.
* New preferences window with multiple pages of options.
* Lots of user interface enhancements and some other new options and bug
fixes.
* Recompiled with Metrowerks C/C++ 1.4.5.

Subject: [*] DropURL 1.4
DropURL lets you store URL bookmarks as icons in the Macintosh Finder.
They can be arranged simply and hierarchically in folders, put in your
Apple menu, or even used as startup items.
Just double-click to get the URL.
DropURL requires Internet Config 1.2 or later, and KeyQuencer 1.2 or
later is desirable.
This release includes two quick ways to grab a URL and turn it into a
DropURL file, one uses KeyQuencer, the other is an AppleScript you can
launch from your OSA menu.
The URL is also copied to the Finder comment field of the file for quick
reference.
This software is free.
Please replace older versions of DropURL, and re-build your desktop to
see the nifty new icon.

Subject: [*] HoldemMaster v1.1
Enclosed is demo version of HoldemMaster v1.1.
HoldemMaster simulates and analyzes a type of poker game called Texas
Hold'em. Texas Hold'em is most widely played poker game in cardrooms
and casinos. This seemingly simple, fast action game attracts many
new players every year but actually it's a very complex game. You can
use HoldemMaster as a tool to improve your game or just play for fun
against "smart" computer players.
The object of the game is to make best five-card poker hand from seven
total cards (two in your hand and five community cards). The
community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table and can
be used by all players. There are four betting rounds and when it's
your turn to act you can either fold, call, bet, or raise.
Some of its features are:
* Play against upto 9 "smart" computer players.
* Display detailed pot odds for every hands you play.
* Display every possible hands for the current board cards.
* Set starting hands based on player position and pot status.
* Comprehensive strategy dialogs to create new players.
* Set check & raise, deception, and bluffing frequencies.
* Click and drag to stack the deck.
* Auto deal (on PowerMac 50MHz about 25,000 hands per minute!).
* Report dialogs to analyze the game.
* Set game limit, blinds, rake, toke, # of players, etc.
* Customize table colors and card backs.
* Excellent Graphics & Sounds!

The Kerning Master Package consists of two programs which compare kerning

probably be of litte interest except to those who create or modify

Subject: [*] SimpleBackup v1.4 - a Finder alias-based backup utility
SimpleBackup - a Finder alias-based backup utility
v1.4 =A9 1996 by Roland Gustafsson, All Rights Reserved
What is SimpleBackup?
SimpleBackup is a very simple and easy to use file backup utility. I
wrote it because I wanted a quick-and-easy way to back up all those
files that are spread out over the hard disk, in the preferences
folder, in the documents folder, certain folders and files in the
applications folder, etc... I decided that I didn't want to write a
user interface for the utility, so I got the idea of letting the
=46inder do the work for me by using aliases. The result is a backup
program that is actually easy to use! You simply navigate through
your hard disk and find the files or entire folders that you want to
backup that are buried in the System Folder, Applications, Documents
folders etc., and tell SimpleBackup about those files/folders by using
aliases.
Version 1.4 changes:
* if an alias is not resolved becaue the volume is not mounted and
"Cancel" was hit in the "Please insert " or the AppleShare
login dialog, backup proceeds anyway, just doesn't back up that one
alias
* barbershop pole animation during scan
See "Read Me!" file for more detailed instructions and history of changes.
System requirements:
- System 7 or better
- Works on any Mac with at least 1 meg free RAM
(I've tested on a Quadra 800, Mac ][ and PowerBook 100)
Although SimpleBackup will work with floppy disks, it is better suited
for backing up to volumes with plenty of space such as ZIP, SyQuest or
Bernoulli removable disks, a second hard drive or even an AppleShare
volume.
SimpleBackup is "ThankYouWare". If you find it useful, all you have
to do is say "thank you." My email address is "[email protected]"

These Wolfenstein Levels are designed for the 1st encounter and must be
installed with WolfEdit. They are the culmination of about three years
of trying to get the most out of a demo. Some of the levels are very
elaborate and very difficult but they can be completed. There aren't any
"completely secret" doors so the games don't wind up as easter egg hunts,
or "wall grunters" as we refer to them. One of the levels sports perhaps
the most difficult single room that can actually be secured without using
a cheat device, IMHO.

M$ applications sometimes distort draw documents, apparently trying to
"interpret" each individual object, couple of suggestions:
1) Group everything in Claris Draw, before you copy & paste into Word.
2) If that doesn't work, try pasting into a paint document then copy &
paste into Word.
3) Last resort, do a screen shot, import the screen shot into a paint

available among minor version changes e.g. 4.0 to 4.02. To get an undate
from 1.02 to 2.0x you will have to pay the update from Claris. But of
cause, since ClarisWorks is now at 4.04 you will have to update from 1.02

If you want to know if there are updates for the 1.0x versions available

Subject: [Q] Video/Audio NuBus cards in IIci
Hi there info-mac readers,
I'm looking for ways to soup up my trusty IIci, and so far I'm considering
two NuBus cards (nothing too drastic), and I'm wondering if any one of you
has something useful to say about my wishes.
- I'd like to add sound-input capability; the best deal I've seen so far is a
(discontinued) 16-bit Media Vision sound card, on offer at Cyberian Outpost.
I mailed them to get some more info on it, but so far (5 days) haven't heard
from them yet. Does anyone know and/or use this card, and if so, do you
recommend it? (I don't want to do anything drastic, just input sounds like
anyone else).
- I assume I'd see some increase in performance (I'm not looking for much) if
I add a video card. Therefor I'd like to add the 8-bit 14" Apple video card
from say a discarded Mac II (because they're cheap and I don't need anything
spiffy). Any comments? (smart/stupid, how much performance increase? Has
anyone actually done that?).
In *both* these cases I'm worried about drivers. I'll upgrade from 7.5 to
7.5.3 after I've backed up my drive, and as both these products are no
longer supported I'm afraid that I'll be stuck with just two lukewarm
pieces of epoxy; now, or in the near future. Can anyone tell me how
susceptable these drivers are to major OS overhauls (Sound Manager 3.0 come
to mind).
Thanks for your time!

My suggestion is dependent on the IIcx being similar to the IIsi (what I
have). My mind is fuzzy on the point of when the IIcx came out but I'm
guess that it was not long after the IIsi.
The IIsi's power on button is on the left side of the back panel if
you're facing the back panel. There is a vertical slot in the button
which can be turned 90 degrees clockwise with a flat-head screwdriver so
that the slot is now horizontal. When the button is in this position it
is "always-on", that is, it will start up automatically when the power
comes back. The downside is that if you *want* to turn it off, you can't
just choose Shutdown form the Special menu. Shutdown will act just like
Restart so you either have to turn the power on button back to the
vertical position or cut the power with a power strip (I use it so I can
turn the IIsi on and off with all my peripherals from a power strip. The
trick is to turn off the power strip during the startup tone but before
the system boot gets going).

The culprit is preference file for Excel. Trash it and let Excel build a

Dear all,
We are in the particularly lucky situation of being hooked directly to the
'net via our Institute network. To match this luxury, our telephone system
has finally been upgraded to direct-line capability which means that folks
can get to us without having to go through the switchboard.
There are many of us who would like to extend this situation to be able to
send/receive faxes from our desktop macs via this direct line phone.
However, we don't need to connect anyplace else with a modem since we have
the internet already via ethernet connections.
So, what hardware do we need to make a single direct line act like a fax
for fax calls and a normal phone for normal calls, that comes with decent
easy-to-use software (remember, some of these people are professors - they
need all the help they can get) and is the dog's danglies as far as this
goes?
Ta muchly for any advice/recommendations/warnings. I'll summarise the

To ALL.
I have a PERSONAL LASER WRITER NT and until now (30,000 copies) I have had
no problem at all, on the countrary I was very proud of it.
Just a month ago, while printing documents and after the machine was in
perfectly regular st.by, I noticed that after the green display lamp was
flashing as usual while ooading the document into the printer, at the
moment of the laser printing, both alarm lamps (paper and paper jam)
started to flash together and no printing was coming out. The PRINTMONITOR
suggested to call Apple Service. So I did. The first time they replaced the
scanner unit (very expensive, over $ 480 all incl) and although I was
skeptic I did it for love of this machine instead of buying a new one
(30,000 copies are not many yet!). After 2 weeks of very low use, the same
problem again. This time happened gradually: the printer began to print
progressively shorter pages, cutting out the bottom of the genuine page.
They replaced the scanner unit again free of charge. After 2 hours the same
problem as at the very beginning. Now they have the machine under more
severe tests.
I wonder if is anybody there with knowledge of this printer and if this
problem is related to something already known such as little electric bugs.
I have the impression they replaced the scanner unit but not the source of
the problem.
Any info. is very welcome.
Yours sincerely

Subject: PC SIMMs on Mac-Summary
Hi,
What follows is a summary of the replies I recieved to my query regarding
the use of Wintel SIMMS on a Mac:
The 72 pin PC SIMMs will work fine on a Mac, as 72 pin SIMMs are an
industry standard and thus not created specifically for PC's or Macs. The
ninth parity bit present in the industry standard 72 pin SIMM is simply
ignored when the SIMM is installed on a Mac. PC's use parity to check Ram
integrity, but Macs use a superior method, a similar version of which is
now starting to be used in PC's too. SIMMs apparently come in two
flavors-assymetric and symmetric types. Most Apple computers can handle
both, but some (like the LC475 and LC520, for example) may specifically
require the symmetric variant for particular Ram configurations. You can
check out if this is the case for your computer consulting GURU, Newer
Technology's utility available at www.newertech.com. When purchasing the
SIMM you need to:
1) Check that the SIMM is no-composite, as composite SIMMs, albeit cheaper,
have higher power requirements and are not recommended for the Mac. One
InfoMac member reported he was running a composite 16 Mb SIMM on a LC630,
so even though not recommended it seems using a composite SIMM will in some
cases work.
2) Check that they are rated at the speed recommended for your Mac (or faster)
3) Check that they are symmetric if so required by your particular Mac
If the SIMM's are of the wrong type (too slow, say) they will just not
work, and should not cause any motherboard (or ather hardware) damage.
Thanks to all the helpful souls that replied-you've saved me (and hopefully
other InfoMac members) a bundle of dough!!

Ferdy

Subject: Summary: Eudora Error message
Just thought I would let folks know what I have found out (or not) on this.
If you tuned in late...I received the following error message from
Eudora running on a 7200/90:
That pesky MacTCP is acting up again.
-23009
There are already 64 TCP or UDP streams open.
{37.88}
Unfortunately, in my original post, I incorrectly stated we were using
Eudora Lite 1.5.1--we are running the latest version (1.5.4). Also, I guess
it was not quite clear that we are running a direct ethernet connection
between all of our machines not dial-up. This pretty much eliminates the
"upgrade to 1.5.4" and "initialize the modem" suggestions that I got from
several people. My appologies for the sloppy post.
Several people suggested that MacTCP cannot handle more than 64 connections
and there must be something holding these open. I guess that is the heart
of the problem but I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be.
This user uses Eudora and sometimes Netscape (which was not running at the
time) which means MacTCP was holding these connections when it shouldn't.
Additionally, most folks suggested that I upgrade to 7.5.3 and OT 1.1.
Yeah...that is easier said than done. Those of you in the US who have
tried to get it from the Apple server can imagine what it is like to try
and get it over here to Germany and that doesn't even consider the fact
that we are running the Germany MacOS.
So, the situation stands like this...the message has only appeared once
so I am writing it off as cosmic ray effect for the moment. As soon as
I can get the system upgrade from my dealer, I will install it.
Many thanks to all who took the time to respond.

Subject: Ugly CD-ROM Toolkit Icon
Oops! I wrote the other day about the ugly b&w CD-ROM Toolkit icon and
how I'd gone into various resources with ResEdit and not seen the one
I see on my screen. Reset & clear screen: yep, it's in ICN# after all.
Curious as to why my 24 bit screen is showing the 2 bit display option,
I peered again into the ic18 and ic14 resources and confirmed my sense
of having not seen any color version of the thing, and, sure enough,
no color frisbee with crossed hammer and wrench.
Since the color icons have totally different resource IDs, I have no
idea how I'd go about creating one that would show up on screen. (I
guess it's time to reinstall the Control Panel, no?)
Then, with this on my mind, I noticed how ugly the PC Exchange icon for
PC disks is, now that my Mac floppies get the hi-tech Copland treatment
thanx to Andrew Welch's Discolour extension, so I thought, well, why
not copy Welch's icon, paste into PC Exchange, then paint "PC" on it?
Turns out the ugly PC Exchange icon I see on my desktop is the ICN#
black-and-white one and not the color one! (you'd think I would've
noticed a certain lack of bit depth!). Unlike the CD-ROM Toolkit CP,
PC Exchange has the proper icons in ic14 and ic18--they're just not in
use!
Are these familiar symptoms to anyone out there?

Subject: Why keep files as Binhex .hqx
I greatly appreciate the sumex mac archive along with the other major
major mac
archives, but something has been bothering me for quite a while. Why are
the archives
Binhexed automatically?
I know that in the past some gateways could only handle 7-bit files
and so that is one
reason to use it but nowadays this should no longer be necessary. Mac
archive files .sit and
.cpt should be just as easy to transport as PC .zip or Unix .tar files.
I also know that the Mac situation is more complex because of the data
and resource forks
but when one of the compression programs is used both forks are compressed
into a single data
fork enabling the compressed file to be transmitted as easy as any image
file.(Netscape,Mosaic
and Fetch automatically recognise and can handle .sit files)
I just tried an experiment. I picked a file from the sumex archive and
downloaded it.(about 2M)
The decoded .sit file was only around 1.4 M - surely this is reason enough
for a change. As well as
longer download times, and the longer extraction times due to BinHex being
a slow convertion
algorithm, the idea of needlessly expanding a file really gets to me.
The local mirror site for a lot of mac archives is src.doc.ic.ac.uk
they have obviously seen
this problem but instead of storing the compressed files they have decided
to compress the
.hqx text again ie. file.sit.hqx.gz
While this decreases the stored size some it only adds to the
extraction time, adding another
level of unnecessary encoding.
I know the change from .hqx to .sit would not be easy for some people
especially those not
using automatic utilities but as the majority of people use Fetch,
Anarchie or one of the
main web browsers those people would still just have to click on a link to
download the
software.

Subject: Zip vs. Ez
chaz :
I saw your note on InfoMac. I spent quite a bit of time researching the
two options and decided on the SyQuest EZ-135. My employer has a Zip
drive which I also use. If I were to do it all over, I'd _still_ buy the
EZ-135 for the following reasons:
1. It _is_ significantly faster when using it for backups. In my case, I
backup about 14 MB per minute using Retrospect onto my EZ-135. (w/
compression)
2. The drive itself is more solid (& heavier). The Zip is so light, that
the one at work often gets dragged around merely by the weight of its
SCSI cable.
3. Increased capacity per disk.
4. The slightly less convenient process of mounting/unmounting cartridges
does not bother me. In fact, those that tell you that there's a button
you have to push go get the cartridge out are configuring their driver
software wrong. To eject, I simply drag the EZ's icon to the trash, wait
about 6.5 seconds and then move a lever to the left to eject the
cartridge.
5. The back of the EZ-135 looks like a SCSI device should, with two 50
pin SCSI connectors, a SCSI ID switch, etc.
It really boils down to a personal decision. My impression of the reviews
was that most of those who favor the Zip were wooed by its "newness"
whereas the SyQuest technology has been around for so long.
That's my two cents...

I'm glad to see that SyQuest no longer requires one to push that button.
[However, if the driver doesn't require it, why is it there? Is it still
necessary for PC installations?]
I really hate this. Even without having to push the button, it's still
fussy. Even given the larger capacity and speed, this design sours me on
the EZ135 almost completely.
I've used other Syquest drives for a long time here at work, and that
lever drives me crazy. If the lever slips while you're moving it and
springs back to the left, the disk remounts and you have to start the
ejection process all over again. Does the EZ135 suffer from this same
annoyance?
>5. The back of the EZ-135 looks like a SCSI device should, with two 50

That is a nice thing, though I haven't seen too many circumstances in
which I couldn't do fine with a choice of two IDs.

I agree.

Not true in my experience and I've got one of each. The SyQuest seems to me
to be a far better deal. Besides its not nearly as cheezy looking, feeling
or sounding.
For anyone who has had or has the SyQuest 200-88-44 machines; note that the
handling on the newer EZ and 270 drives is much faster and more convenient
then the older 5 inch format.

I own both types of drive, and in my experience the speed difference
*is* real and *is* very noticeable in day-to-day operations. As I've
said here before (or somewhere, anyway), IMO which drive to buy
depends on what you're going to do with it. Storage/backup: go with
a Zip. Active day-to-day use with heavy read/write: go with EZ.
They're both good units, both have their pros and cons.
>Also according to reviews I've read, the SyQuest EZ disks are quite
>fragile if not stored in their padded cases, where the ZIP disks are much

I've read the same reviews. OTOH, the only real-world comments from
users I've read have been about failed *Zip* disks, not failed EZs.
Myself, I've had no problems of any sort with either media (or either
drive, for that matter).
>Personally, I don't like the fussy disk-ejecting system on SyQuest drives:
>drag to trash, push button, wait from drive to spin down, throw lever to
>eject it. The more floppy-like behavior of the ZIP [drag to trash, disk

I too prefer the Zip's insert/eject operation to the EZ's. At least with
this drive, SyQuest has made it a lot more difficult to eject the cart
before it spins down (which is real easy to do on the larger SyQuest
drives). Also baffling to me is why they reversed the lever's direction
of operation--I have the 200MB SyQuest at work and now I find myself
having to stop and think about which direction you need to push the
lever on either of them.
Again, think about your use. If you're going to want to run large apps
or work with large files from your removable storage, I think the EZ's
speed will make a difference to you.
Hope this helps,
Pat

* Lots of user interface enhancements and some other new options and bug
fixes.
* Recompiled with Metrowerks C/C++ 1.4.5.

DropURL lets you store URL bookmarks as icons in the Macintosh Finder.
They can be arranged simply and hierarchically in folders, put in your

Just double-click to get the URL.
DropURL requires Internet Config 1.2 or later, and KeyQuencer 1.2 or
later is desirable.
This release includes two quick ways to grab a URL and turn it into a
DropURL file, one uses KeyQuencer, the other is an AppleScript you can
launch from your OSA menu.
The URL is also copied to the Finder comment field of the file for quick

* Excellent Graphics & Sounds!

Subject: [*] Print2Pict 3.7
This is version 3.7 of Print2Pict. It is a virtual printer driver
that previews and saves printed pages to files of various formats such
as PICT, TIFF, PICS, QuickTime,... It also creates standalone documents
from any DTP software.
It works only under System 7 or later, but not under GX.
You can use Print2Pict with any application that prints using the standard
Macintosh interface.
Drop it in your extensions folder and select it with the Chooser.
What is new in version 3.7 ?
- Some bugs have been fixed.
- Now creates GIF files.
- It is now fully compatible with QuarkXPress.

1) Group everything in Claris Draw, before you copy & paste into Word.
2) If that doesn't work, try pasting into a paint document then copy &
paste into Word.
3) Last resort, do a screen shot, import the screen shot into a paint

I'll summarise the
responses and repost, so you can mail direct if you like.

To use it, simply select it as your font (under Options/General

{37.88}

I'm glad you like your EZ135. As I said, I don't own either, so was just
reporting what friends of mine have said about them, and what I've seen
of the ZIP and SyQuest drives we have here at work.

Yep, sustained transfer like that would be an application which would
show off greater drive speed.

I find this aspect of the ZIP actually quite attractive. I would likely
carry a drive like this around a lot, and the lighter, the better, so far
as I'm concerned.
>3. Increased capacity per disk.
That's true. The EZ has an edge there.

Does the EZ135 suffer from this same
annoyance?

I've read the same reviews. OTOH, the only real-world comments from
users I've read have been about failed *Zip* disks, not failed EZs.
Myself, I've had no problems of any sort with either media (or either
drive, for that matter).
>Personally, I don't like the fussy disk-ejecting system on SyQuest drives:

I too prefer the Zip's insert/eject operation to the EZ's. At least with
this drive, SyQuest has made it a lot more difficult to eject the cart
before it spins down (which is real easy to do on the larger SyQuest
drives). Also baffling to me is why they reversed the lever's direction
of operation--I have the 200MB SyQuest at work and now I find myself
having to stop and think about which direction you need to push the
lever on either of them.
Again, think about your use. If you're going to want to run large apps
or work with large files from your removable storage, I think the EZ's
speed will make a difference to you.
Hope this helps,
Pat
