Subject: [*] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Apr=E8s?= Fax 2.0

Suppose you have a Fax-modem and you want to receive a fax late at
night or during your absence. Up to now the only way to do this was to
keep your Mac running at all times. No longer.

PreFax is a piece of hardware that enables soft power on/off Macs to
be turned on when the attached modem receives a telephone call (or fax
call). The Apr=E8s Fax control panel shuts down the Mac after a
designated period of time if the Mac was brought to life by the modem.
Together PreFax and Apr=E8s Fax can be used as an unattended fax
receiving machine.

New in version 2.0
Apr=E8s Fax can now tell an extension manager (not included) to only
load the extensions necessary to receive faxes. PreFax 2.0 fixes a
problem on newer Macs. Newer Macs, and those running system 7.5.1 and
up, can be shut down by pressing the power key on the keyboard. This
had an annoying side effect with the original Prefax hardware. This
version contains a fix.

Subject: [*] Backer 1.5

Backer is a shareware Control Panel for Macintosh that performs
automatic backup copies of your documents.

It's easy to use and requires very little memory to install.

Each time you modify a document, a backup copy of the previous version
is created in a folder at the same level as the document you are
working with. A hypertext in-line Help documentation is included.

You are also allowed to store all the backup copies into a single
folder or drive.

Backer is widely configurable, and includes a copy management utility
which allows you to do some 'housekeeping' onto your hard disk.

Subject: [*] Cindy's Newsmailer v1.1e

--Version 1.1e has a documentation change, two minor enhancements,
--and is fully deprotected and open for your inspection.

Cindy's Newsmailer v1.1e is an offline newsgroup and emailer with many
advanced features, including the following:

1. Sends and receives email and newsgroup messages at times you
specify, and allows you to read and compose offline.
2. Supports background downloading, so you can read and compose
messages while the software is transferring messages.
3. Resizable, colored, scrolling windows, and different color "quoted"
text. The colors are user-settable.
4. Automatic routing of incoming messages to different folders based
on content. This allows you to, say, send all mailing list
messages to one folder, and all "get rich quick" messages to
another!
5. Automatically play a custom sound when new mail hits a folder.
6. Indefinite message retention. You can keep all messages forever, or
expire messages as desired.
7. Address book to store frequently used addresses.
8. Tagline capability to store your favorite signature lines.
9. Form letters feature allows you to write standardized messages that
have wildcards for certain information, such as logonid, name,
date, time, your name, etc. When you choose a form to send to a
user, it automatically fills in these wildcards with the
appropriate information. Use this feature to send standardized
information with a "custom-built" look.
10. Carbon copies, blind carbon copies, and "message received"
acknowledgements.
11. Can use either MacTCP for an Internet connection, or the Apple
Modem Tool with the comm toolbox to use a "shell" account.
12. "Automatic Replies" feature that allows you to automatically
respond to incoming e-mail with certain phrases in the subject
line. With this feature, you can set up Cindy's Newsmailer to
be an "information server", even if you have a dial-up account.

Try it, you'll like it! Requires HyperCard Player 2.1 or higher.

Subject: [*] Default Folder 2.6

Default Folder is a shareware control panel that enhances Open and Save
dialog boxes to make it easier for you to manage files on your Macintosh.
It provides many of the essential features of the commercial SuperBoomerang
and Directory Assistance utilities, but without the infrequently used
extras that take their toll in compatibility, memory, and CPU usage.

Default Folder's time-saving Open and Save dialog enhancements allow you to:
- Set up a default folder for any or all applications.
- Switch among recently used folders from a pop-up menu.
- See available disk space and switch between disks from a pop-up menu.
- Click on a Finder window to display it in an Open or Save dialog.
- Create folders, get information (including changing name, type, and
creator), and move items to the Trash from within file dialogs.
- "Rebound" back to the last file you used.
- Make "Replace" the default option instead of "Cancel" when saving
a file with the same name as an existing file.
- Speed up the display of Open and Save dialogs by turning off custom
color icons in the file list.

Default Folder will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher,
and is accelerated for PowerPC. In addition to the standard internet
archives, information and updates are available at:

This program may be included on the Info-Mac and Umich CD-ROMs.

New features in this release:
----------------------------
- You can now click in one of the Finder's disabled windows behind a file
dialog and Default Folder will display that folder in the file dialog. This
feature is equivalent to the "Click There It Is!" extension.
- An option has been added to tell Default Folder whether to show the
"top level" of a disk or the last used folder on the disk when you
switch between disks in file dialogs.
- Users of the Aaron extension will now see Copland-style folders in
Default Folder's pop-up menu buttons. Thanks to Ronald Davis for
both the idea and the buttons.
- Registration is now done via Kagi Shareware. To this end, the "Registration
Form" button in the help dialog now runs a program called "Register SCS"
rather than putting up a registration form itself.
- If a file is visible in the Finder, info changed using Default Folder's
Get Info dialog will now be immediately recognized by the Finder.
Previously, you had to close the folder and open it again before the
Finder would realize that Default Folder had made changes.

DoubleScroll is a control panel/extension which gives your scroll bars
double arrows on each end for easier scrolling back and forth. It also has
a live scrolling feature as well as a 'scrolling throttle' for controlling
your scrolling speed. If you are running the Aaron extension, it uses the
Aaron look instead of the 7.x look.

Changes in Version 2.1.2 (4/25/96)
* Changed copyright notice to include Amargosa Software, Inc.
* Changed Register program to include new email address.
* Changed docs to use new email address.
* Fixed incorrect mailing address in Register program.

It's a .sit.hqx (not sea), requires ppc and color. Docs included.

Currently only the 'stock' panel is enabled, but it's still kind of fun to
play with.

Nothing too fancy; you could do the figuring in your head, but this is
easier and more amusing. Plus it has fish. Ohboy.

It's a first release, but (AFAIK) pretty clean, stable, and relatively
harmless. This version can be freely distributed, but not altered.

Author's email address: [email protected]

Jeremy's CS Modules is a collection of Control Strip modules. They are:

* Clock CSM - Displays the current time. Via a popup menu, you can
customize the appearance of the display.
* Sound Volume CSM - A direct replacement for the Sound Volume module
provided by Apple. The icon shows the current volume setting in both
numeric and pictoral form, so you don't need to bring up the menu to
determine the current volume.
* Sleep CSM - A direct replacement for the Sleep Now module provided by
Apple. Via the popup menu, you can select whether or not to bypass the
dialog that appears when AppleTalk is active.
* Battery Time CSM - This module displays Apple's estimate of remaining
battery time (only available on new model PowerBooks with intelligent
batteries), a historical estimate which "learns" your battery use, or the
elapsed time spent on battery.
* CPU Speed CSM - This module displays the current CPU speed, or indicates
with icons fast or reduced clock speed. With a properly equipped PowerBook,
you can also change the CPU speed.
* Battery CSM - This module displays current battery levels and charger
status. It can also display the hard drive state, fast or reduced clock
speed, modem status, and estimate of remaining time (with Apple Intelligent
batteries only). All this in less space than Apple's battery monitor
module!
* Temperature CSM - This module displays the internal PowerBook
temperature and the battery temperature, as returned by the Power Manager.
(Only supported by Duos and PowerBook 500 series).
* AppleTalk CSM - This module replaces Apple's AppleTalk Switch module.
It performs the same function - letting you turn on or off AppleTalk - but
without all the annoying dialog boxes that Apple's module displays.
* Application CSM - This module displays the number of applications and
desk accessories currently running. The popup menu shows the current
foreground application, and lets you switch applications. New!

Release 1.5.2 contains enhancements to the Temperature CSM, the Application
CSM, and the AppleTalk CSM.

Subject: [*] Phon ID

Keywords: PHONICS PHONOGRAMS READING PEDAGOGY PLATYPUS HYPERCARD B&W

Phon ID is designed to address the beginning phase of reading based on the
phonics [as opposed to the see-say] method of reading pedagogy. It is
based on "The Writing Road to Reading" by Romalda Bishop Spalding.

The idea in Phon ID is for the user to hear a sound and identify--from a
field of four-- a phonogram that can represent that sound. Clearly the
English language has many ways to write the same sound, but the program is
organized so that an ambiguous question will never appear. For example,
you will not be forced to choose between "ir", "ur", and "er" (they may all
sound identical). Correct answers win you a stack of PlatyBucks. You pay
a PlatyBuck for each incorrect answer but you never go in the hole.
Incorrect answers provide additional information designed to help the
student master the material. An incorrect response will display an example
of the correct phonogram making the given sound in the context of a word.
The word flashes to draw attention to itself, and speaks if you have HC
player 2.3. For example, if you did not choose the oa phonogram when you
hear the long o sound, the word "oar" will flash [and possibly speak.]

Recommended classroom uses: Let each child only drill enough to earn one
stack of PlatyBucks if the material is new to him, or two if it is review.
You can have them trade their virtual Platybucks in for a small treat. You
can put a large number of children through this drill in a short time, as
it moves very quickly.

This program should work on B&W Macs and old (6.05) system software. We
recommend Hypercard 2.1 Player or better. If you have Hypercard 2.3 you
get the additional benefit of the words speaking.

Ran NDD and APD again - still nothing. So much for sophisticated

John,

By placing Norton Directory Assistance (version 2.0.6 is the latest that
I have) loose in the System folder - thus causing it to load near the
last of the icon parade - I have not had the least problem with it on
several computers (Quadra 610 with DOS card, PM 6100, IIci, PowerBook

One of the 6100's is even running AppleTalk Remote Access Personal,

might give this a try, and see if you still have conflicts.

Subject: Aaron compatible with 7.5.3?

I recently updated my version 7.5.1 to 7.5.3 using the Update
2.0 CD. I'm running a Power Mac 5200/75LC. Once I did that I
couldn't boot the machine unless I started it without
extensions. Reloading extensions one by one revealed Aaron 1.2
to be the offending extension. Has anyone else had this
problem or can you recommend a solution?

The message I got was that the computer experienced an
unexpected problem and gave me the codes of 108 and 192.

I really like the features and appearance of Aaron, but I want
my machine to run too!

Thanks in advance,

Subject: AirDock and Me (Part Dieux)

Conversation at the Bloom hovel Tuesday night.

Al: I got the AirDock working.
Leslye: Does that mean you're not furious any more?
Al: I'm still furious. I'm just not stymied any more.

Farallon just replied to my Monday note. To wit:
>AirPath and IRTalk are still incompatible with Open Transport. We are
>currently working on a fix and hope to have it out soon. We'll announce
>new versions on our Web page so checking there is the thing to do.

Their web site is www.farallon.com.

I was left to my own devices. And to some hints from Apple. Apple's docs
said I should add IRTALK to the host computer and select IRTALK from the
Appletalk CP. I did the first part. IRTALK doesn't show as an option in
the Appletalk CP. Oh goody.

So I switched my desktop Mac from Open Transport to "classic" networking
and tried again. IRTALK showed up as an option under the Network CP.

That was when Leslye and I had our furious/stymied chat.

OK, let's boogie. I put the 7.5.3 update CD-ROM in my desktop Mac and
mounted it on the 5300cs via AirDock. Did good. Then, having nothing else
to do, I decided to try loading MicroSoft Office the same way. I dunno
why I even tried that. I'd been under the impression that Office wouldn't
install from a remote drive. It did. BTW, as we internet cognoscenti are
unfortunately wont to say, thankyou to MicroSoft for the new license that
lets me have the same toy on my portable without having to buy another
copy of the software. I've been known to say naughty words about MS. They
earn a good-guy-award for that policy.

Bottom line? AirDock can be made to work. It ain't easy. Or documented.
The documentation that exists is at best misleading.

But if Farallon ever gets its act together, hoo boy! The AirDock hardware
is magnificunt.

I will shortly be supporting a few (8) users from another office
moving over to our site. These users will be leaving their desktop
PCs behind, but bringing along their laptop PCs. I am looking for
some help in identifying some software to provide them to make the
transition as simple as possible for all concerned.

The new desktops will be some 8100s that are available. I have
decided to go with MS Office to provide them with the standard
applications they are used to. Here are the problem areas:

1) Meeting scheduler of some sort. Accessable from both their mac and
their laptop PC. I don't have a server set up yet. I can set one up
if necessary, but I also have access to a UNIX server that is running
the standard UNIX calendar program. I was planning on using the POP
server out of this server with Eudora as their mail server.

2) Mail service compatible with both PCs and Macs (Eudora seems a
simple choice in this case).

3) A replacement for MS Access. I am not familiar with this
application, and would like to know what the closest mac equivalent.
The primary user has stated that he was willing to learn Filemaker,
but thought he was losing capabilities. Either a refutation of this
statement or a better choice would be helpful.

Any other suggestions (other than getting rid of the laptops) would be
appreciated. Reply directly if possible and I'll summarize.

Ah, back to normal. Uncle Al, The Kiddies' Pal, is not happy.

The background: Leslye asked me Saturday afternoon if I could get her a
PowerBook before we left for Albuquerque on Thursday so she could play
Eric's Ultimate Solitaire at the hotel. Hey, her mom just died, she's a
tad spacey, I do what I can for her. Anyway, I did a major "Gack!" and
tried to learn up on PB's real quick so I could make a semi-cogent order
with one of the usual mail-order supsects. The net is neat for such stuff
and I ordered a 5300cs 16/750. Might's well do it right, yes? I also
ordered one of Farallon's AirDocks to automagically link the PB to our
home ethernetlet via the 5300's infrared link. Large mistake.

As those who did not fall asleep in class know, I've done the 7.5.3 thing
on all computers. Including the newly stable Open Transport of the 1.1
persuasion. The AirDock that shipped yesterday from MacWarehouse has a
little insert, dated August 1995, saying AirDock doesn't work with OT.
August 95, fer naughtyword's sake? Say that AirDock has been sitting
in the warehouse for a while? I snarled and went to Farallon's web site.
And apologized for snarling at the warehouse. Not a thing on AirDock in
the Farallon site. They don't even list it as a product. Certainly no
upgrade for that non-existent product. Oh goody.

I dropped Farallon a note about its modest omission. I thought I should
maybe tell y'all about it, too.

It is possible to print to a HP 850C via ethernet, but not using
Laserwriter Bridge. Apple's LocalTalk Bridge will work, as will Sonic
Systems' LocalBridge, Powerbridge or SuperBridge (Confusing, isn't it?
We'll need a Cam Bridge, next - or two :-) Sonic's Bridge software is

LocalBridge came with my Sonic ethernet card, but all the rest cost

Incidentally, has anyone else noticed that the Mac I/O port on an HP
855C is extremely flaky ? It's not just that I have to switch the
printer off and then on every time I switch between PC and Mac mode, but
even when I'm using Mac mode continuously, there are times when the
printer just refuses to show up either on the LocalTalk network or on a
direct serial connection. Mysteriously enough, the problem then goes
away by itself after some time, and I can never replicate the problem
deliberately. It's an extremely annoying problem, especially when I'm
trying to print something in a hurry. What's the use of a printer if you
don't know whether it will take one minute or one hour just to show up
in the chooser ?
Coming on top of all the other driver-related software hassles with
the HP 850/855, I now give H-P a strongly NEGATIVE rating.

However in the last week I stumbled across, through the ZiffNet/Mac
online service, Serial of Champions 1.1

In brief, from the ReadMe:

About Serial of Champions...
Serial of Champions watches your serial ports when you are using
communications applications and tells you how your communications
time is being spent. It can tell you how much time was spent
waiting on
responses from the remote computer, how much time was spent
waiting
on your Macintosh (or you), how much time was actually spent
sending data
and receiving data. The statistics are captured into a log file
and the data
can be exported for analysis.
Serial of Champs also let's you see the actual modem data as it
comes
and goes to and from your computer and (for you internal modem
users) can
put simulated send/receive data indicators in your menu bar.

Hey great, just what I was looking for, however I cannot get most of the
program to work. ie. slabs of the menu bar are shaded. Can anybody help?

I am not a ZiffNet/Mac subscriber but I accessed the service through
. NB. THIS PROGRAM CANNOT BE UPLOADED TO ANOTHER

For quite a while now I have been having problems using Netscape 2.01
(through MacPPP) and ClarisWorks 3.0, opening PageMaker 5.0, et cetera.

I have a Performa 580CD with 8MB RAM, with RAM Doubler installed, but
SoftwareFPU not installed (it had been earlier). What happens, usually,
is I will open MacPPP, close that and then connect to the net through
Netscape 2.01. I will use the Web for about fifteen/twenty minutes, and
then quit that. I will log off and go use something else.

Sometimes I have no problems opening and using anything else after that,
but sometimes PageMaker doesn't open the first time I try because an
error of type 2 occures. It works the second time, usually.

Also, after using other programs, I open Netscape and MacPPP to use the
net, and when I try to use Netscape, my screen either totally freezes, or
Netscape quits, or it opens but no page loads and I can't click on
anything (I end up having to force-quit, which usually works), and I have
to restart to use Netscape again (even after trashing the Pref files for it).

Sometimes, if I am using Claris Works after Netscape for the first time,
the screen will usually freeze, and most often the computer will crash if
I try to open PageMaker after that.

Another problem I am having is that sometimes (usually in PageM 5.0),
when I might tap the command (open-apple) key, the "interrupt box" (I
guess that's what it called) appears (which normally only appears if I
press command+power-button. This is strange, and I usually end up typing
G FINDER.

Gee... I seem to have a lot of problems, but I think that's it. Can
anyone, please, help me??????

Thank you so much.

Subject: Student Writing Center

I recently bought The Learning Company's Student Writing Center
as a lightweight word processor/desktop publisher for my son.
In general, it seems like a decent product, but I have one
problem: it won't let me paste graphics from the clipboard.

When I try to paste graphics (and I tried it with graphics from
a variety of sources), it puts a graphics box on the screen for
me to place where I want it, but the box has no contents (i.e.,
it's all white). Interestingly, the size of the box always
corresponds to the size of the graphic being pasted, so it must
be reading the graphic in, but for some reason isn't rendering
it, either on screen or on paper.

I do have a work-around for the problem, because the program
does read graphics properly from files, so I can always save
graphics to an intermediate file rather than copying to the
clipboard in order to import them into Student Writing Center.
On the other hand, I bought a Mac so I wouldn't have to do
things like this!

Do any of you own this program? Do you have the same problem,
or is there perhaps a problem with my configuration? I'm
running System 7.5.x on a Quadra 610 with Now Utilities and
a few other odds and ends (not RAM Doubler).

I recently read somewhere that The Learning Company had been

Received several endorsements of Default Folder, shareware. I like Default
Folder,
too, and think that everyone should have at least this, but it does not do as
much
as Directory Assistance II or Now SuperBoomerang. In particular, no file menu
in
the

Al Bloom (don't you love this guy?) provided the best answer to my question,
which
was to tell me that I was wrong. You know what? He's right! I haven't used DA
II
for
a good while but went back to it and am not having the problems I had
previously. So
I still like DA II better than SuperBoomerang because DA allows you to define
one
configuration (such as "Word Processing") and then assign multiple applications
(like all your word processing applications) to it. DA is also a lot more
flexible
than SuperBoomerang in terms of the number and order of items in the menu. To
be
fair, SuperBoomerang does do one thing that DA does not - it knows what files
have
been accessed via the Apple Menu and it includes them on the Recent File list
(along
w/ those accessed via Open / Save dialogs). This is nice.

Subject: Type 11 in 7.5.3 & Explorer

Dear Digest Readers,
Aighh, Type 11 strikes again. Internet Explorer 2.0 just installed, and I
went to select a new helper application, and boom, it happened while I was
in my file open/save dialog box. This was supposed to be a release version
of Internet Explorer, but it acts worse than the beta. Perhaps it is
because it has the built in ability to read VRML files, and couldn't find
QuickDraw 3d on my Mac. You may ask why I don't install QuickDraw 3d,
but that is because that crashes on my Mac as well. Netscape PR2 Atlas
someone told me was more unstable than the new Internet Explorer 2.0.
Well if that's the case I don't want to even download PR2 of Atlas.

Conflict Catcher reports no problems.

I think developers ought to wait until Apple releases products as part of the
system software of all systems before developing for that system software.
QuickDraw 3d isn't even a standard part of System 7.5.3.
Neither is QuickDraw GX which also crashes my Mac.

Nor am I running any unusual INITs.

Some ideas for Copland or better yet System 7.5.4 (if that gets releasd
before):

Type 11 errors should not even be allowed to be part of the System
software code. In fact any code that leaves only a system restart button up
should be changed to allow the user to quit the offending application. You
can do this in Windows most of the time with a simple CTRL-ALT-Del, and
it tells you which application went unstable and gives you the option of
quiting the offending application. Yes, there is Command-Option-Escape,
but that works none of the time when I encounter a Type 11 error. If the
system encounters such an exception, it is better for the application to
unexpectedly quit than force the user to reboot. Forcing the user to reboot
means dialing back into the Internet Service Provider after rebooting.
It also means that a lot of system corruption can happen because there
wasn't a proper shut down. If Apple allowed in its error handling code to
go directly to shut down upon an exception that would be great too. Some of
you may say there is MacsBug, but it too often causes its own INIT
conflicts. What I want is a stable system that will handle errors without
forcing a reboot. Type 1 errors at least I can shut down after their
occurance, but those have been far and few between.

Netscape 2.0.1 is great for right now, except it doesn't have Java, and eats
up enough memory that to run it with PageMill I need 40MB of RAM.
With enough memory it doesn't crash at all.

Hecht I had trouble with 7.5.2 crashing the same way with no extensions
loaded, and opening a 68k application This time there was still 20MB free
and System 7.5.3 on that same machine a PowerMac 7200/75.

Oh well, just my ranting and raving wishing for a better system.
But someone has to speak up to Apple's programmers, get them to make a
system that doesn't crash the way it does now.

The adventures continue....

Sincerely,

Subject: Word 6.1 printing problem.

Howdy,

Here's another problem that has appeared after installing our PM 7200s.
Howdy.

I have PM 7200/90s and a Personal LaserWriter NT. The PMs and Word
are newly installed. We have been experiencing an intermittant but annoying
problem when we print. With some documents, after they are sent to the
printer, we receive an "Upper Tray out of paper" error message from the print
monitor. Of course, we find this a bit strange considering the NT only has
one tray. Usually, to clear this, we have to cycle the power on the printer.
Here's what we know (or think we know) so far:

- We are using 7.5.2 and LaserWriter 8.3
- the driver and PDf seem to report the printer information correctly.
- The problem seems to appear on documents that were originally written
on a PowerBook with Word 5.1 and then moved over to the PM (although not
all such docs cause the problem).
- After the power cycle the doc will usually print.
- I have told the user to resave the document as a Word 6 file and to choose
page setup again before trying to print such docs. He insists that he has
done this and the problem persists.

Anyone out there have an idea what might be causing this? Why does the printer
driver think that an NT has more than one pager tray?

TIA,
-David-

Subject: Xerox 830 scanner

We just acquired an old XEROX 830 scanner without software. Does
anybody out there in MACland have a copy of the software for either a Mac or
PC, MAC preferred. XEROX claims not to have it available as the machine is
"too old". None of their newer software will work on the old dog.

Thanx.
Sid
