Subject: [*] About This Particular Mac 2.03

About This Particular Macintosh (ATPM) is a well-written, fun, quirky
electronic magazine about the *personal* computing experience, the
Macintosh experience. It comes out monthly, as close to the 15th as we
can manage, in DOCMaker stand-alone format. We owe ATPM's existence to
those everyday Mac users who share with us their stories, anecdotes,
letters, pictures and reviews, which we are only too happy to publish.
After all, this magazine is about *your* particular macintosh.

You won't find a better expression of what it means to own a Macintosh
than you'll find in ATPM, month after month. Thanks for reading ATPM -

Subject: [*] Al Bunny's Typing Class 1.4

"Al Bunny's Typing Class" is NOT another typing tutor. It is a
typing tutor which makes you feel you're having real fun while you're
learning. It is different from those commerical typing tutors.
Most of Al Bunny's registered users registered Al Bunny's Typing
Class after they were dispointed by those commercial typing tutors.
So before spending money on the commercial typing tutor, please
give Al Bunny a try.

Bugs fixed:
1. Now Al Bunny is compatible with RamDoubler
2. A bug caused the system crash for those systems with screen depth
higher than 256-colors has been fixed.

Features added:
1. Support smaller screens.
2. Support non-US keyboard layouts.
The users in European countries can now customize Al Bunny to
practice the characters on their own keyboards(including accents).
If you would like to use Dvorak keyboard, now you might want to
see how Al Bunny can help you.
3. Al Bunny even comes out with a way to help the users who use two-byte
characters(Chinese, Japanese...). Check it out.
4. Now the user can practice the numerical keypad.

Many thanks to the registered users all around the world for your supports.

"Al Bunny's Typing Class" has been reviewed as one of the TOP 20 shareware
in the Japanese MacPower magazine.

Best Regards,
Ming H. Kao

Subject: [*] bib.db 1.5

This is "bib. db." (vers 1.5), a FileMaker Pro (2.1) database that will
generate both footnotes & bibliographical references according to the type
of source you have. I produced this database to track literature for my PhD
dissertation in history. Its output is flagged for formatting by a word-
processor (Includes Nisus Macro to do the job), but also can provide a
non-formatted output for those who don't want to fiddle with that stuff or
don't have Nisus. The database determines the bibliographical item's source
type by itself. (e.g., whether it is an article, monograph, dissertation, &
cetera).

Comes with instructions. Is configured also to automatically send a
footnote citation over to Nisus where it's automatically formatted.

US$5 Shareware
Please feel free to distribute this file.

New in 1.5:
* A little bug fixed ( a missing comma in multiple editors listings)
* Added a new nisus macro that automatically formats upon switchin. (duh!)
* changed the layouts a little bit.

Subject: [*] Clock^3 1.1: A QuickDraw 3D clock

Clock^3 (pronounced "clock cubed") is a clock program that works in
the third dimension. Thanks to Apple=BCs QuickDraw 3D technology, the
clocks that Clock^3 displays in its windows are fully interactive
three-dimensional objects that you can rotate, zoom into or out of,
and otherwise manipulate in full 3D space. Standard 3DMF
(3-dimensional metafile format) models can also be imported into
Clock^3 and given a set of simple clock hands. Those with more
advanced 3D modeling software can create full-blown clocks in 3DMF;
details are provided in the Read Me file.

Clock^3 is a module in a suite of three-dimensional applications
collectively called Cubicle. Cubicle is a set of fully
three-dimensional, interactive desk accessories. Another
already-released module is Eyes^3, a three-dimensional eyes program.
Watch out for additional QuickDraw 3D-savvy Cubicle programs from
this developer.

Because Clock^3 uses Apple's QuickDraw 3D technology, it requires a
Power Macintosh with at least 16M of RAM. Needless to say, QuickDraw
3D must also be installed in your system.

Changes in Version 1.1:
* radically simplified the user interface, particularly for setting
preferences
* customized the 3D viewer: drag-and-drop is no longer supported, but
user-settable rotation is; in addition, clocks continue to tick even
though the user is in the middle of rotating, moving, or scaling them
* changed the default clock model so that the main clock face is
hollow; this way, the time can be seen (albeit in reverse) even if
the clock is rotated by 180 degrees
* made a number of small performance, reliability, and efficiency
tune-ups
* improved (slightly) the handling of low-memory conditions

As QuickDraw=C5 3D is a relatively new technology, the 3D routines which
Clock^3 depends on may themselves have bugs. In particular, memory
management in QuickDraw=C5 3D may still have occasional leaks and
glitches. In these cases, please download the latest version of
QuickDraw=C5 3D whenever it becomes available. At this writing, the
latest version is 1.0.4.

System Requirements
Clock^3 requires a Power Macintosh with QuickDraw=C5 3D version 1.0.3 or
higher and at least 16 megabytes of total memory.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Server 2.0.2 - beyond plain text Email

CommuniGate Server 2.0.2 - REAL MIME.

The kernel part of the CommuniGate integrated messaging system is
the CommuniGate Server. When installed, it runs in background and:
* stores all messages sent and received;
* enables network access for CommuniGate users, maintains their
mailboxes, queues, etc.;
* loads and runs CommuniGate modules (i.e. FaxGate, UUCPGate,
VoiceGate, etc.) and creates the run-time environment for those
modules;
* maintains system activity log;
* implements routing algorithms;
* maintains a resource database and provides access to that
database for CommuniGate users and CommuniGate modules (fax
cover pages, sounds, voice scripts, info tables, etc.).

The CommuniGate services can be accessed with the CommuniGator
client software. The client software allows you to compose and
read messages, to manage your mailboxes, etc. It is also used
by CommuniGate administrator to configure, maintain, monitor and
control the CommuniGate server - locally or remotely.

This version:
2.0.2
*?MIME stream encoding is supported now.
*?AppleSingle and AppleDouble encoding is supported now.
*?UUencode encoding and decoding are supported now.
* The Attachments Encoding option is set for incoming letters to
ensure smooth relaying.
*?Trailing spaces coding is corrected for MIME quoted-printable
encoding.

- Excalibur will offer suggestions for how to correct a word.
- Excalibur can spell check the clipboard. This makes it a good
spelling checker for any text based application such as Alpha, BBEdit,
or Eudora.
- You can teach it about new LaTeX commands and environments that you
define.
- Optionally spell checks text in the typewriter (\tt) font.
- You can create your own dictionaries.
- Works on any plain TEXT file. (type TEXT)
- You will need System 6.0.5 or higher to run Excalibur.
- If you are running System 7 or greater, there is balloon help.
- Excalibur is free.
- British, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish dictionaries are
also available. You can get these from ftp.eg.bucknell.edu in

Subject: [*] Find File 1.1.2 patch

A neat new feature in Find File 1.1.2 is the option to automatically
close Find File when you select a menu item (or double-click on a
found item) while holding down the option key. Unfortunately, this
doesn't work with keyboard equivalents. For instance, command-option-o
doesn't do anything. This patch modifies Find File 1.1.2 to enable the
use of the option key with keyboard equivalents. After applying the
patch, you'll find that command-option-o opens the selected items and
quits Find File.

This patch is designed for Find File 1.1.2 only.
It should work with localized verion, but comes without any warranty.
Use it at your own risks !

Subject: [*] LProgressIndicator & Friends 2.1

What's new in 2.1?

- Features!
* Added LProgressIndicatorProxy.
* Added LProgressDialog.
* Added LCursor (with color cursor support!) and fixed LAnimateCursor.
* Updated test app to test all of the new features.

LProgressIndicator & Friends is a progress feedback framework for
PowerPlant apps. Included classes:

LProgressIndicator:
Abstract base class. Intended to be used to abstract the actual concrete
visual feedback from the component wishing to indicate progress. Using
this class in your libraries allows you to change the visual representation
of progress in your applications, without changing library code. Supports
infinite- and finite-length tasks.

LThermometerPane:
Finder-like progress bar LPane and LProgressIndicator subclass. Uses the
user's window tinge colors, as specified in the Color control panel. For
infinite-length tasks, displays a "barberpole" pattern in those colors.

LCursor:
Base class representing the mouse cursor.

LAnimateCursor:
Subclass of LCursor and LProgressIndicator. Supports cursor animation in
black & white & color.

LProgressDialog:
Simple Finder "Copy"-like progress dialog using LThermometerPane.

LProgressIndicatorProxy:
Subclass of LProgressIndicator which forwards all method calls to a
different caller-specified LProgressIndicator subclass instance.

Subject: [*] Missile Math 1.0 -- Educational Arcade Game

Flying number-snakes have invaded the skies. (Don't you just hate it when
that happens.) Your job in Launch Control is to destroy them. Each
number-snake has a vulnerable place value that varies from snake to snake.
Hit a snake with a missile where its vulnerable and the snake is destroyed.
Hit enough snakes and you can move to new levels with responsibility for
more missile launchers and face more challenging opponents. Eventually, you
may be promoted and given more powerful missiles.

Missile Math is Freeware. Missile Math may be included in collections of
Shareware if all documentation is included. See the "Missile Math Read Me"
file for usage limitations.

Missile Math requires system 7.x, at least a 640 x 480-pixel, color or
grayscale monitor and 1.5 megabytes of free RAM. Two hundred fifty-six
colors and at least a 33 MHz 68040 processor are recommended.

General instructions can be found in the "Read Me" file. Detailed help is
available on-line. A file with tips for classroom use is also included.

Subject: [*] PhoneFloater 1.1

Attached is PhoneFloater 1.1, the latest version of PhoneFloater from
MUSI Computer Products Inc. PhoneFloater 1.1 offers many improvements
over previous versions, including voice messaging, integrated phone books,
improved Speech Recognition support, improved call tracking, and improved
Drag & Drop features.

PhoneFloater is a desktop speakerphone and voice messaging application
for use with a GeoPort Telecom Adapter equipped Macintosh. PhoneFloater
provides users with a simple but intelligent interface for placing and
receiving telephone calls through their Macintosh, with extensive support
for Macintosh Drag & Drop and the Speech Recognition Manager.

PhoneFloater 1.1 provides users with a small, effective telephone solution
for their GeoPort equipped Macintosh. Telephony support includes the
ability to place and receive calls with PhoneFloater, using your Macintosh
as a full-duplex speakerphone for the clearest possible telephone connection,
and a full featured voice messaging system with time and date stamping.

A new addition to PhoneFloater 1.1 is the integrated Phone Book. With the
Phone Book, you can now speak the name of the party you wish to call using
Apple Speech Recognition 1.5 software, or drag and drop the name to the
Phone window to initiate a call.

Speech recognition in PhoneFloater allows you to place calls by talking to
your Macintosh, as well as perform normal functions like saving a file. By
using Speech Recognition 1.5 software, Power Macintosh users will have
an enhanced user experience when using PhoneFloater. Placing a call is as
simple as saying "555-1212 Dial" or "Phone MUSI Computer Products" to your
Macintosh when using the speech recognition option.

System Requirements
PhoneFloater 1.1 requires a Macintosh AV or Power Macintosh with a GeoPort
Telecom Adapter and the Apple Telecom Software with a minimum of 8 MB of
RAM (only 768k application memory required). If installed, PhoneFloater
will use PowerTalk for placing calls with PowerTalk Business Cards.
PhoneFloater is accelerated for Power Macintosh.

Availability and Pricing
PhoneFloater 1.1 is distributed as shareware through online services and
the Internet at leading Macintosh archive sites, or by contacting MUSI

Subject: [*] QD3D 1.0.4 Net Install

QuickDraw(TM) 3D enables your Macintosh computer to display three-dimensional
graphics using applications designed to take advantage of QuickDraw 3D. It also
provides a common file format, called 3DMF (for "3D metafile"), for exchanging
3D documents, and acceleration services which support plug-and-play accelerator
cards.

The following are required to install and run QuickDraw 3D:
* A PowerPC(TM) based computer with a minimum of 16 megabytes of memory (RAM)
* MacOS System 7.1.2 or later

The QuickDraw 3D folder includes the following applications, 3D models, and
textures that allow you to explore the 3D capabilities of your Macintosh:
* SimpleText version 1.3.1 and Scrapbook version 7.5.1. These applications
allow you to open and interact with 3DMF models.
* A new Scrapbook File with sample 3DMF models.
* A number of 3DMF models provided by Model Masters and Viewpoint Datalabs
International.
* Textures provided by Wraptures and Xaos Tools.

You can expect more applications using QuickDraw 3D in the near future,
including new versions of application programs you may already own. Contact
your software vendors for more information about their plans to support this
new technology.

Subject: [*] Quarto 1.01r board game

Quarto! is a strategy game I copied from a board game of the same name.

The object of this game is to be the first person (or computer) to correctly
declare that there is a line of four pieces, each of which shares at least one
attribute.
There are four attributes: shape (round or rectangular), height (tall or
squat), color (white or grey), and plain or dotted.

Version 1.01r released April 1996. This version fixes two bugs that were
introduced in the features above: after opening a game, you could put pieces
down over pieces that were already on the board. Similarly, after "undoing" a
previously won game, you could put pieces down over pieces that were previously
part of the winning line.

More info is available by choosing "Help" from the Quarto menu in the game.
Quarto! is freeware. Source code is freely available.

This utility is really just a quick hack I did while taking a break

all you REALLY need to do is run it once. In the days of old before
Second Sight 3.0, Sysops didn't even have ANSI (gasp!) As a result,
Sysop's of former Freesoft BBS products may have a lot of Quotes in
their Quote files that they never bothered to colorize or "pretty up"
for their users. Personally, I must have over 300. It lets you add
ANSI to your quotes.

features, bug fixes, and error checking, including, a graphics test,a small
database of Macs to compare your times to, and a new summary data window.

A few of the features are disabled until you register, see the Read Me for
details.

Here are some advantages over CheckTicks:
One: It has a true Mac interface. e.g. Menus, windows, etc.
Two: It lets you perform multiple "runs" of the tests (up to 5), to obtain
a true average, instead of a one time thing.
Three: It includes a GetNextEvent() test, and a floating point test, and a
graphics test.
=46our: I plan on constantly updating and improving Speed Tester.
=46ive: It is 32bit clean (unlike Check Ticks).
Six: There is a native version and a 68k version.
Seven: There is a small database of Macs to compare your times to.

Subject: [*] Who's on First 2.0: Computerized Call Scheduling

Who's on First is a user-friendly stand-alone Macintosh computer program that
schedules call with a few clicks of the mouse. It was presented at the 1995
American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting after years of thorough
testing and use at the University of Chicago.

* It can schedule any period of time for you, up to a year at once.

* It assigns staff the exact number of calls they should get, and can take
into account a weighting factor that you specify (e.g., the number of
hours/week a staff member works or a value based on what year a resident
is).

* Day-of-the-week preferences allow, for example, staff not to be on call
on Wednesdays if that's their bridge night, and specific-date preferences
take into account staff vacations.

* You set how close you will allow two calls for one staff member to be.

* You format the schedule the way you want. You can include pager or phone
numbers, and it can be read by (and touched up with) the word processor of
your choice.

* If some staff work part-time and share pagers, the program can allocate
the pagers based on what days the staff work and can pick them up and drop
them off.

* It can create a basic second or backup call schedule.

Who's on First is available for only $100. The current Who's on First is
version 2.0 and requires 1M of disk space and 1050K of RAM.

Questions, comments, problems, suggestions, and orders may be directed to
the developer, Robert Hsiung, at [email protected] or 5737 S. University
Ave., Chicago, IL 60637-1507.
