Howdy folks,
I've spent 2 weeks of my brain power trying to find a util that I can
use to save sound bytes out as SND's, WAV's and AU files.
So far, not much luck.
I need something for either a Mac OR a PC to do this..but the files
right now are system 7 sound files.
Thanks in advance,

First off, you need to run Norton Disk Doctor, MacTools Pro, and Disk First
Aid repeatedly until they report no problems found, on your internal and
any external drives you occasionally use. Don't delay doing this, or your
damage may become so severe you won't be able to repair it. In that case,
your only option will be to reformat.
I've never had so many b-tree errors in my life! Every external 128- and
230-meg optical (about 20) had 'em, and the utilities fixed, and fixed, and
fixed, but they kept coming back, and back, and back.
I have finally cured such problems by doing a clean install of System 7.5,
followed by a clean install of the update to 7.5.3, with extensions turned
off. Since then, even Netscape 1.1N hasn't caused any problems.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

This is how the directories are arranged under ANY Infomac mirror site. ie
if I use my local mirror, "archie.au" I will find a directory called
"/micros/mac".
Within the mac dir is both "info-mac" and "umich" dirs.
Now following the path above, if we concantenate the whole path, we get:
archie.au/micros/mac/info-mac/nwt/util/phone-memo.hqx
and to turn it into a proper URL we wrap it up like so:
If you have IceTee installed you could option click on this URL and have it
download.
As long as you know the address of a mirror site you can work out where
things live. If you visit some of the Hyper archives ( such as mine
with your web browser, the digests have been turned into HTML and the URLS
have been automatically turned into hotlinks for the most common mirrors.
Vist my site at URL and you can
search back issues too!

Disc-to-Disk. It's commercial software. Ask your dealer. It can save any
portion of any song to your HD at any of several sample rates in any of a
number of common sound file formats including both 'snd ' (Mac system
sound format) and AIFF. NB Beware copyright infringement! I would imagine
that putting a sound on the Web constituted public performance and was
therefore illegal without permission of the copyright holder.

I beleive the problem lies in the LaserWriter 8 driver.
Well, That's my experience.
I now use the (older) HP LaserJet driver, which also makes use of the

Yes, but how much space do you have on your INTERNAL drive? If you have
background printing turned on in your Chooser, PrintMonitor saves the Spool
file to the System Folder on your startup drive. If you're cramped for
space on your internal drive this is the message you get.

Subject: Apple IIe translator
This is my first attemt to contact IM and I hope I'm using the correct
address.
I have a bothersome question, for which - I am sure - a simple answer
exists. But first the background:
I am an Apple IIgs refugee and now have an LC475 Mac with an Apple IIe
board installed and a ProDos partition on my HD. On this partition I have,
among other things, a database containing something over a thousand records
of approximately 15 - 20 fields each. The file was created by DBMaster Pro
and I can easily translate it to DIF format, and actually did so. Here
comes the obvious question:
How can I port this to my FileMaker Pro V. 3 program? If I simply put it
into the Macintosh partition, FMP evidently doesn't recognize it - it
doesn't show up on the file open dialog screen. BTW, in the File Info
screen it shows as "IIe document".
I have contacted Claris tech support, who was quite knowledgable (IMHO) but
said that this was Apple's problem - and gave me the Apple SOS number. When
I called them, I finally got to to a live person, who then connected me to
another, who, he said, was better versed in the IIe world. She, predictably
told me that this was Claris' problem! I'm not sure she was right (she
didn't know what a DIF file is - and didn't recognize the word "tuples").
Isn't there some easy way to change the file-type? Or wouldn't that help?
If there is really no other way, is there some commercial service that will
do it for me, at a reasonable price?
If any kind soul can come up with an answer, please send it to my email
address:
[email protected]
Thanks in advance for all answers - even condolences. (I dont relish the
thought of re-keying the entire file). Sigh ..........
Have a nice day,

The problem you notice is probably merely cosmetic; the ConfigPPP control
panel does not properly redraw the Open and Close buttons. To test this,
momentarily cover the control panel with another Finder window, then move
the other window. See if the buttons don't redraw correctly then.
In any case, you should update both the PPP extension and the ConfigPPP

Subject: Cross Platform Disk-spanning Compression?
I know of a very cheap hardware solution, and a software solution
aswell:
1. Get a so-called null-modem cable (modem cable with 2 wires switched
so that you can plug it in two computers without needing a modem
inbetween), available at most electronics stores. Best way to go is
usually buy a regular Mac-to-Modem cable (DIN-9 to RS-232) and a
Null-modem PC-to-PC cable (RS-232 to RS-232) because null-modem cables
with a Mac plug are not that readily available.
Right, plug one end in a Mac serial port, other in PC serial port. Start
ZTerm on Mac and Telix on PC (Or any other Terminal emulation app that
supports ZModem) and send files just like you would over a modem. This
is not fast, but it's cheap
2. Get a copy of SunTar for the Mac (on sumex), a GNU tar implementation
for the Mac, and a similar tar application for your PC (ask local PC
guru for reference). Tar stands for Tape ARchive, and is an ancient
archiving program (originally for UNIX, but maybe even older?). It can
do multi-disk archives in a transparent way (might require a "-M" switch
on a DOS box
On the DOS box archive the file to the floppies (refer to tar manual how
to do this) and use SunTar to retrieve them on the Mac. You could use a
seperate compression program to limit the number of disks.
Ad 1 and 2: I find that gnuzip gives the best crossplatform performance
for compressing files. You could use this for the cable filetransfer
aswell. StuffitExpander can expand gnuzip files (extension .gz), or you
can get MacGzip. Get a gzip or gnuzip implementation for the PC aswell.
As you can see I am not that much of an expert with DOS filenames, but
anyone that is familiar with archives of DOS software should be able to
supply you with the real names.
Hope this is useful,
cheers,
Tobias

I didn't see the original post (this piece was snipped out of another
reply), so if this was already addressed I apologize.
I used to own a DeskWriter (Mac version of the DeskJet), and the print
quality just gave me fits. I liked the machine itself very much, it was
fast and reliable, but they just couldn't seem to produce cartridges for
it that would give consistent printing results. I'd buy one cart and it
would give me nice crisp clear text, the next one would bleed and blur
all over the page. I traded the printer in three (3) times, thinking it
was at fault (this was also HP's recommendation). I tried, I think, every
type of paper ever made. I talked to service techs. Finally realized that
the problem wasn't the printer or the paper but the carts, and there was
nothing I could do to resolve it.
I mention this to point out that it's possible your problem isn't clogged
jets. The "streaky" part of your description sounds like dirty jets, but
the "blurry" part sounds more like the sort of problems I encountered.
Caveat: my DeskWriter experience was a couple years back, and they may
have totally eliminated their cartridge problems now.
Good luck,

I'm very interested to hear this because a Deskwriter printer in my lab has
stopped appearing on the Localtalk network, although it works fine via a
serial connection. Perhaps someone elsewhere in our zone has just installed
LW Bridge! You're sure it is LaserWriter Bridge that's the culprit? Have
you been in touch with Apple and/or HP about this?
As for how to bridge Localtalk to Ethernet, have you considered a hardware
solution? I've looked into this recently (in order to get off the
departmental LocalTalk network and onto Ethernet, but still allow use of
Localtalk-only printers and Macs). We've been quoted just over 300 pounds
for a device called a Sonic Etherprint TCP/IP which will bridge a Localtalk
network of up to 12 devices to Ethernet, allowing use of all network
services including TCP/IP (we're promised.) There are cheaper versions
without the TCP/IP capability and for only two devices. If you like I can
give you the supplier's details. (we haven't bought one yet as we're still
waiting for ethernet to be installed.)
Hope this helps

the Print Monitor Documents folder resides). Try to free up some space
or turn background printing off.

I would imagine that one of two things is true:
1. You're using LaserWriter 7.x, with background printing turned on.
2. You're using LaserWriter 8.x, with background printing turned on or
off.
In either case, the disk that has insufficient space is your startup disk.
LaserWriter 7.x only spools to the disk if background printing is on, so
you may be able to get around the problem by turning background printing
off.
LaserWriter 8.x spools to the disk before every print job, regardless of
whether background printing is on or off. THere are two ways to get
around the problem if you're using this driver:
a. Clear off a bunch of space on your startup disk.
b. Tell the system to put its spool files on another disk.
Instructions follow.
Changing the location of your LaserWriter 8 spool files:
1. Select the drive where you want the temporary spool file to be
located. Create a new folder and name it "Printing Temp Folder".
2. Make an alias of that folder.
3. Move the alias in to the Extensions folder in the active System Folder.
4. Delete " alias" from the name of the alias in Extensions.
This works well. As a test, I put my temporary folder on a Netware file
server, then printed a 65Mb Photoshop document using LaserWriter 8.2 with
only 63K free on my startup disk.

Perhaps the problem lies with Print Shop (I don't know this
application), but if I were to guess I'd say the problem is with the
printer driver. You didn't mention which printer you're using, but I
suspect it's an inkjet. By default most printer drivers create their
scratch files on the startup disk. Check in the Page Setup...
dialogue if the printer driver will allow you to choose the external
drive as a scratch disk; if not, either free enough space on the
startup disk, or make the external drive the startup disk when
printing large/complex files.

What do you use instead of Now SuperBoomerang? I previously liked Directory

a lot, but that seems to conflict w/ many things now. Have gone to
SuperBoomerang, but that actually
doesn't do all the things that Directory Assistance did. Is there a good
free/shareware to

Please answer via e-mail if possible. Thanks.

Subject: Quadra-700 (sys 7.5.3, 7.5.1) destroys floppies
(A copy of this message has also been posted to the following newsgroups:
comp.sys.mac.system, comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc)
Here's a hardware/software interaction question/problem/puzzle:
Ever since I installed sys 7.5, I have had random occurrences
of floppy destruction: a usually good floppy is inserted, but then
the system reports an error reading. All subsequent efforts
to use that floppy fail. It is unreadable; Norton won't fix it;
it cannot be re-formatted; other Macs can't read it.
Basically it has to be thrown into the trash bin.
I also experienced one case where a ZIP disk was trashed, but
I have been able to re-format that disk with a low-level format.
I am running a Quadra 700, 20 Meg, with a DiiMo fast cache.
Zip drive, Quantum 750 internal and 1222 Meg Quantum external (APS)
When this started happening under sys 7.5.1, I read something to
the effect that SCSI Manager 4.3.1 caused problems on the
Quadra and seem to recall that the floppy drive would be affected.
So I trashed SCSI Manager 4.3.1 back in January and there were
no more floppy destructions.
Now I have just updated to 7.5.3 with a clean install, new disk
drivers (APS 4.0.4), etc. I have not yet thrown in all my special
extensions, but was starting on that. I had installed ATM 3.8.3.
When I started to install Now Utilities v5 from its floppy, the
machine trashed the floppy. I had booted with extensions off.
The system bombed with error #10. Subsequent efforts to read the floppy
on other Macs have been unsuccessful.
Any suggestions? Does SCSI Manager have to be trashed?
I understand that SCSI Manager is no longer a separate extension,
but is now "inside" the system. How would one remove it?
.....thanks for any help.....jim

Subject: Re->Copying files with RamD
This is a well known problem on 040 Macs. Rick Ford from Macintouch reports:
Connectix' Jorg Brown has a hack that may work around problems copying files
on 68040 Macs with Ram Doubler 1.6.1 and System 7.5.3. If you try it, please
let us
know the results.
A similar patch, this time for the copy problem, is to disable the new
68K SCSI
Manager from System 7.5.3. You only want to do this for 68K-based Macs
that
don't already have SCSI Manager: that is, every 68K based Mac except
the 660AV,
the 840AV, and Macs with IDE drives. Anyway, open a copy of the System
7.5
Update 2.0 file, and change the resource number of the 'citt' resource
from 43 to 430
(or just about any other number, really). Then swap the new System 7.5
Update
with the old one. This should solve the copy problem, and could cure
problems
people are seeing with their hard disk drivers as well.

The simplest way I know of is to open your extensions or control panels
folder, view by name, select all, copy and paste to wherever you want the
list. If you need the specific loading order it is as follows: Extensions
folder in alphabetical order; Control Panels folder in alphabetical order;
System folder in alphabetical order.
Hope this helps,

I believe there are one or two shareware apps which do that (e.g.
List Files 2.5.3 or QuickList 1.0.1), but here are two simple (and
free) solutions:
1. In Finder open the Extensions folder, choose Edit>Select All,
choose Edit>Copy, then go into your emailer, start a new message,
and choose Edit>Paste. You'll get a list of every visible file in
the folder (but not including files/folders in nested folders). You
can automate this even further with AppleScript.
2. If you're using BBEdit Lite 3.5.1 open a new document and choose
Edit>Insert>Folder Listing.... Use standard Mac navigating
techniques to go the System folder, select the Extensions folder and
press Return. You'll get a indented list of every file in the folder
(including invisible ones and including files/folders in nested
folders).
Hope this helps, Florin

Guys,
I strongly recommend that we not discuss this post any further. Nobody
wants Info-Mac to be a roundtable on the birth-control issue. I think the
moderators were right in admitting the file upload, albeit an
out-of-the-ordinary one. In my opinion, however, it was inappropriate for
the second individual to post his comments--not on the program--but on the
idea behind it. He asked for proof and figures. Info-mac should not be
the site for an analytical discussion of something that has nothing to do
with Macintoshes or even computers in general. Personally, I don't like
the tarot card file uploads which happen every once in a while, but I don't
post messages to the digest with my opinion, nor do I rudely address the
moderator; because Info-Mac is not the forum for discussing those issues.
Let's stay on target and let this thread die.

Congratulations to Gordon for NOT censuring the above software.
I agree with some of the sentiments expressed by Phil about the risk of
using the software ON ITS OWN for birth control, but he seems to have
forgotten about the alternative use of the software ... as a nice
uncomplicated way of starting (or adding to) a family.
This incident provides an excellent example of why one shouldn't
hotheadedly rush into censureship. Phil, assume that the readers of this

There is _nothing_ illegal about viruses, yet you do not archive
these. The Charting Coach IS a virus, in that it advertises to
perform one service, while it actually does another. The instructions
contained therein WILL cause pregnancies, and WILL CERTAINLY
promulgate Sexually Transmitted Diseaases, including HIV, the AIDS
virus. (Yes, virus...!)
Also, given the current legislative climate of "blaming the carrier
for the bad news", you are opening yourselves up to medical
[mal]practice liability by allowing bogus medical advice to be
distributed by your services.
I really would suggest that you consult with the Stanford
administration and their lawyers about this. I would hate to see the
entire Info-Mac archive yanked on this stupid incident. You are in a
position of authority and need to live up to the responsibilities
that come with that position.
[flame on]
Meanwhile, I will return to preparing detailed instructions on:
- killing oneself neatly and efficiently
- seducing 6-year-old girls
- creating undetectible explosive devices
- any and all activities which, although the perpetration thereof
might be illegal in some cases, the dissemination of information
related to them is definitely not.
[flame off, but you do get the point, yes?]
At the very least you need a new directory entitled "propaganda".

This is almost certainly not the forum for this message, but I feel I have to
address the recent message by Phil Hudson regarding the program Charting Coach
which claims:
>Did you know that a woman is only fertile about 100 hours during her
menstrual
>cycle? You can now confidently identify these hours using the 100% natural
>Ovulation Method. This scientifically proven method of avoiding or
>achieving pregnancy eliminates all health risks associated with

Mr. Hudson stated:
>Let's see their "scientific proof" that this "method" is "99% effective".
>I have no doubt that it will turn out that they have tried to make facts
>fit what they already believe.
Firstly, I don't believe it necessary for every scientific post to justify its
claims in a post to info-mac (in fact, I'm GLAD they didn't give all the
statistics and research associated with this theory here). Info-mac is not a
scientific forum. Yes, it would have been nice if they could have referenced
some article to substantiate their claims, but I don't see it as absolutely
necessary for such a post.
Secondly, Mr. Hudson, just exactly how do you know that this theory is a bogus
as you claim? It just so happens that I recently read a article in the
International Herald Tribune which was reproduced from an article in either
the N.Y. Times or the Washington Post (since the Trib is owned by these two
papers that's were they get most of their articles) claiming that a new study
had shown that this system does in fact seem to work. The research involved a
large sample of women who were trying to get pregnant. Those having
intercourse the day before ovulation were something like 80% successful with
the percentages decreasing until 5 days before ovulation with a probability of
something like (I didn't cut out the article so this is all from my memory) 10%
. What caught my eye was that they said there was a 0% chance of pregnancy
the day after ovulation (which I found surprising). Now, I'm no human
reproduction specialists (in fact, I'm not even a doctor), but I do remember
that this struck me both as a legitimate as well as reputable study and I
would like to know where anyone gets off dismissing it so quickly (Mr. Hudson-
are you a doctor involved in the study of human reproduction?). Besides, what
if it is in fact legit and it all turns out to be true?
I just thought we should all have a just a little more tolerance to new ideas
before we flame anyone too quickly. I certainly believe in a healthy
skepticism, but a little self-restraint probably ain't so bad either...
Just my $0.02 worth...
