Try PowerLock, available in the archives; shareware, and seems like
exactly what you want.

There are a couple of places that specialize in providing these sorts
of parts. I've been very happy dealing with SoftSolutions, in Eugene
Oregon. You can reach them at (503) 461-1136 voice, or 2005 (fax).
Folks in the US can dial (800) 264-2530. They sell parts and will
also do repairs and board swaps.

Fergus's problem may be very serious.
I had a similar problem, but with another application
(no not microsloth), and it turned out that the desktop
B-TREE was corrupt (misaligned) and would write files
over an occupied space. For Fergus, I think at the
moment it is only corrupting the next/previous file (in a contiguous
sense on the harddisk) but if something is not fixed real soon - eg
reformatting the disk, he may lose a lot more data
by it being overwritten by accident... :-O
I may be wrong, but when something like this happened to me
I was VERY concerned. The application that I suspect corrupted
the b-tree in the first place was netscape 1.0, but I dont know for sure.
Goodluck and I hope I'm wrong and its something trivial

I found one that I'm trying out to decide if I want to pay the shareware
fee. It's called Powerlock, and it does exactly what you said. It asks for
a password when it starts up, and if the password is incorrect it shuts
down. I believe I got it from the Info-Mac archives. Do a search for it, I
think it's exactly what you want.

Is there some way to record only a portion of a song or some software which

I and many others would always recommend that you use the latest versions
of software available. Right now, the latest, non-beta released version of
PPP is FreePPP 1.0.5. It has worked bug-free for me for many a month. I
only used the PPP control panel which had the Hard/Soft Close buttons for a
day before I made the switch to FreePPP.
In addition, I have just made the switch to FreePPP 2.5b4, which has had
only one minor, although frustrating, problem which took 10 minutes to
figure out. (Seems PPP sends something "bad" to the modem unless the
checkbox for turning on the modem speaker is checked. Otherwise, the modem
does not initialize.)

That is always possible. Not probable, but possible.

There are two alternatives I can think of. One is Peter Lewis's Talk, which
interworks (in theory) with anything using the Unix talk protocol; this is an
old program, has lots of bugs, and can be unusable with some other systems
(in my experience, it almost never works with Solaris, though older versions
of SunOS are OK).
The other approach is to use Nathan Neuberger's Chat. This is a daemon you
run on your own Mac, and which you or others connect to by telnet. It gives
a line-at-a-time interaction, like IRC, instead of the character-at-a-time
interaction of Talk, and allows multiway connections. I prefer Talk's style,
myself, but I'd prefer it even better if I could get it to work more often...
Both of these programs are available on the info-mac archives, in the comm/tcp
directory. You might want to attack Chat with ResEdit to get rid of some of
its stupid defaults; it assumes you want to use it to run some teeny-hacker
BBS and play idiot roleplay games, hence the list of channel names it comes
with and the facility for *rolling dice*, god forbid. You can use it for real
communication without breaking out in acne, though.

You didn't mention your System version, but RD 1.6.1 does not run well
under 7.5.1. If that's what you have, use RD 1.5.2 instead. 1.6.1 works
fine for me under 7.5.3, though, and causes no problem with Netscape or
Type Reunion.
However, I long ago gave up on Now Utilities--the Now Toolbox itself
conflicted with at least half of my modest extension set (only 50!), even
with none of the actual Now utilitiy modules loaded. Now's unreliability
seems to get worse with every System release. Almost every useful Now
function can be obtained with Type Reunion and an array of free/shareware
extensions that are rock-solid.

Subject: Networking Mac, Win, Linux?
Folks;
Have what I thought was a simple problem...teach _me_ to think!
I have a test bed platform consisting of a UNIX (Linux) box, Mac PCI PM
7500, and Windows95 machine. I want to network them, using the Unix box as
a file server, using all freely-distributed software. (The hardware is not
a problem; 10BaseT w/hub is available and active.)
I thought about using NFS, but there is no freely-distributable NFS
client for the Mac. I thought about using CAP, but there is no
freely-distributable AppleTalk stack for the Win95 box.
Does _anyone_ know of a file-sharing protocol that can be used under
Unix as a file server for both the Mac and Win machines? The goal of this
exercise is to set up a mini-network using TCP/IP as the underlying layer,
allowing for EMAIL (relatively simple) and file serving (here, I'm stuck);
all using non-commercial (shareware ok, if at a reasonable cost) software
for both the server and client ends. This system will _not_ be connected to
the Internet, rather a simple LAN exercise.
Please respond via EMAIL; I will consolidate the replies and post a
summary, if there is interest.

I've found that Deskjet/Deskwriter cartridges can be cleaned simply by

My experience exactly! I am using a PM 7100/66. This problem never occurred
prior to upgrading to 7.5.3 from 7.5.1. It has happened to me from the Finder
and also from within an application (CellQuest, a flow cytometer interface).
Launching a new app (by braille..I learned that the chooser is pretty easy to
find "in the dark") brings the cursor back. I have reduced the system to a
bare minimum of Apple-only extensions but the problem is so infrequent it is
hard to tell if it is fixed or not. It occurs maybe once per hour or two of
use. I can not yet tell if it is related to a particular operation. I upgraded
a Powerbook 520c to 7.5.3 from 7.5 (7.5.1 was unstable on my 520c) at the same
time and have not seen this problem on that computer. Both upgrades were from
clean new installs of 7.5.
Any ideas?

Oh yeah?
Let's see their "scientific proof" that this "method" is "99% effective".
I have no doubt that it will turn out that they have tried to make facts
fit what they already believe. Proof, however, is a little more rigorous
than that (and there's no difference between "scientific" proof and any
other kind of proof -- that's just a carefully-chosen "trigger" word to
lend them spurious credibility). Proof might consist of a study,
conducted by objective, rational and unprejudiced people, of a
statistically valid number of women using this "method" compared to a
control group using the known-to-be-effective methods named -- how many
unwanted pregnancies in each group? Let's see your figures! (Don't hold
your breath, folks). These people are selling an ideology, not a family
planning method. To put it plainly: they are liars, and the truth is not
in them. "99%", forsooth! Get out of here.
So-called "natural" birth-control methods are a perfectly valid choice
for a woman, either on their own or in conjunction with some other
method(s), but only if she is fully aware of the true effectiveness
statistics for these methods, which are pretty abysmal. I believe it is
grossly irresponsible to deliberately mislead people on this subject, and
I believe that is what "Family of the Americas" is doing. They know that
nobody in their right mind will adopt their method as a serious measure
if they get the facts, so they lie. Why? What's their motive? Not to help
women plan their families, that's for sure.
List moderator: The post quoted above is dishonest both in intent and in
execution. Do you not have a responsibility to censor such posts on the
list? Just because these people are politically powerful at the moment in
the US doesn't mean you have to help them spread deceit! And don't let
them pull any of that "Gott mit uns" stuff on you; if they think God
wants them to lie then I guess we all know who it is they really worship,
huh?

Perhaps this shouldn't have gone in the app directory, but there is nothing
illegal about it, so we post it. You are more than welcome to write and post

And, as I'm sure some of the veterans

Try PowerLock, available in the archives; shareware, and seems like
exactly what you want.

There are a couple of places that specialize in providing these sorts
of parts. I've been very happy dealing with SoftSolutions, in Eugene
Oregon. You can reach them at (503) 461-1136 voice, or 2005 (fax).
Folks in the US can dial (800) 264-2530. They sell parts and will

Folks;
The goal of this
exercise is to set up a mini-network using TCP/IP as the underlying layer,
allowing for EMAIL (relatively simple) and file serving (here, I'm stuck);
all using non-commercial (shareware ok, if at a reasonable cost) software
for both the server and client ends. This system will _not_ be connected to
the Internet, rather a simple LAN exercise.
Please respond via EMAIL; I will consolidate the replies and post a
summary, if there is interest.
