Subject: [*] 2DINESE

2DINESE is a two-dimensional topography simulator based on the theory of
surface evolution. It is primarily designed for use in R&D in
microelectronics and related fields, as well as, as an educational tool at
Universities and Research Institutes. Its use, however, is not exclusively
limited to process simulations in microelectonics, and indeed it can be
used to study any other problem related to surface or interface motion.
Crystal growth and dissolution, for instance, is another very typical
example for its use.

68k machines require an FPU.

Subject: [*] BBEdit extension to run MacPerl scripts

This BBEdit extension allows the running of MacPerl scripts from
BBEdit. MacPerl is a Macintosh port of the Perl programming language
by Matthias Neeracher. Information about MacPerl is available at

This extension sends the text in the active BBEdit window to MacPerl
to be executed as a Perl script. If a Perl script executed by the
extension writes output to stdout or stderr then a new BBEdit window
is created and the output is put into the new window after the script
is finished executing (any stderr text is first followed by the stdout
text). MacPerl must be running before the extension is executed,
otherwise an alert is displayed. Typing the command and period keys
together will terminate the extension, although the Perl script
started by the extension will still be running.

The extension is a 68K BBEdit extension and should work on a 68K or
PPC Macintosh with MacPerl 4 or 5, and BBEdit or BBEdit Lite (I've
only tried it with version 3.5.2 of BBEdit).

This extension is freeware. If you have any questions or comments, or
would like a copy of the source code, please let me know.

Subject: [*] BibTeX for Mac PowerPC Version 1.02

It has no known bugs, however, use at your own risk; there is no
warranty.... The only known crashes are from low memory situations on
680x0 machines, if this happens to you, try increasing its memory
allocation using 'Get Info' in the finder.

Features:

* it works;
* switchable between 'bib' and 'small' modes. The 'big' mode increases
the size of biobiography resources such as the number of strings allowed.
* copes with both Unix and Mac standard eol characters.
* reasonably fast (the original bibtex code is sadly not up to scratch
as far as efficieny goes);
* support high-level apple events etc. so you can drag a '.aux' file (or
several) onto it for processing, or send it an odoc event from Alpha...
* friendly to other apps (actually calls WaitNextEvent);
* Fat binary; also runs on 68k (but with less testing);
* Source code available;
* Common search path for both .bst and .bib files, although you
can of course keep them in separate directories if you like.

This version of BibTeX is totally free.

Recent changes:

1.02 Switchable between Big and Small. Uses new memory allocation
scheme from Rick, so temporary memory is used rather than the
system heap. This means the application's given partition can
be much smaller (300k works for me). Added fref 'TEXT' resource
which was missing previously (so drag and drop will work under
all circumstances now).
1.01 Copes with Unix as well as Mac EOL characters
1.0 Original; soon to be distributed with OzTeX 2.0

Idea generation, annotation, and evaluation tools focus your group.
Results are instantly organized by generating a variety of reports that
summarize the interaction and separate the good from bad ideas based on
the votes of participants.

Other features include private and public chatting as well as tools for
finding, listing, and sorting the ideas in a shared, live document called

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Client 2.0

CommuniGator

The CommuniGator application is the client part of the CommuniGate
integrated messaging system. It allows you to work with all your
messages: e-mail, fax, voice, pager, etc.

You can use it on the same computer the CommuniGate server is installed on,
and you can install and use it on other computers connected to the server
via network.

The CommuniGate User Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application as your messaging environment. It provides information about:
- message composing;
- address books;
- mailboxes;
- operations on messages;
- miscellaneous CommuniGator features;

CommuniGator is used to manage the CommuniGate Server, too: to configure
the server itself or the modules it runs, to control the modules and their
queues, etc. The CommuniGate System Manual explains how you can use the
CommuniGator application to maintain your CommuniGate Server.

See the CommuniGate Installation Manual for installation instructions.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxSender 2.0.1

CommuniGate? FaxSender print driver

FaxSender is a print (Chooser) driver to use with the CommuniGate System. It
employs the same Address Books panel as the CommuniGator application, and it
can be used with any application that supports printing. When "FaxSender" is
selected in the Chooser, using the Print command in any application results
in "printing" of the open document on a remote fax machine.

In order to avoid switching between your regular printer driver and
FaxSender, you can have the "FaxSwitcher" extension installed. After you
installed FaxSwitcher, select the FaxSender in the Chooser, and you'll see
the Option button which allows you to set the special-keys combination. You
can set a combination, select your regular printer driver again, and close
the Chooser.

Now, if you press the selected key combination when choosing Page Setup or
Print from an application File menu, the FaxSender driver replaces your
regular printer driver and allows you to fax from an application without
going through the Chooser.

There are two versions of the print driver: a non-networkable (FaxSender) and
a networkable one (FaxSender Network). If you plan to send faxes from the same
computer that runs the CommuniGate Server, you should install the FaxSender
driver on that computer. Install the FaxSender Network on all other computers
on your network.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FileGate 1.0 - mostly for programmers

CommuniGate FileGate 1.0

The FileGate is a CommuniGate communication module that transfers messages
to and from plain text files.

Applications can use the FileGate to send messages: if an application
composes a message as a plain text file and places that file in the
FileGate OutBox folder, the FileGate reads it and submits the message to
the system in the same way as if that messages was read from the Internet.

Applications can use the FileGate to receive messages: if a message is
addressed/routed to FileGate, the part of the address is used
as a name of a folder inside the FaxGate InBoxes folder. If such a folder
is found, the FileGate stores the message in that folder as a plain text
file. So, each application can have its own InBox folder and it can
receive messages by scanning that folder and reading the text files found.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate POPGate 1.3 - REAL MIME!

CommuniGate POPGate 1.3

The POPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting e-mail
message transfer using the POP Internet protocol (RFC1725) via TCP/IP
network.

The POPGate module supports multi-stream communications. For each
registered user, POPGate can retrieve messages from several remote
mailboxes and provide access to CommuniGate user mailboxes for several
remote users simultaneously.

Retrieving mail:
Sometimes (usually, when your CommuniGate server is not directly
connected to Internet), mail is stored on some foreign "mail servers".
The POP protocol allows client applications to connect to those "mail
servers" and retrieve mail from mailboxes on those servers.
Each registered CommuniGate user can specify POP accounts he/she
has on remote mail servers, and POPGate will automatically make
connections, retrieve new mail and store mail in user's In Box mailboxes.

For dial-up linked system, you will use POPGate to retrieve your mail
>From the mail server(s), and you will use SMTPGate to send your mail.

When you have many local users, you may consider getting your own domain
name. In this case your network provider can store all messages directed
to your domain in one POP account.
CONTACT YOUR NETWORK PROVIDER TO GET YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME and a UNIFIED
DOMAIN-WIDE POP ACCOUNT.
POPGate can retrieve mail from such a "unified", domain-wide account. When
specified, that account is polled periodically, and all messages retrieved
>From it are delivered to CommuniGate users.

You may want to enable access to CommuniGate user mailboxes via Internet.
Any E-mail software supporting POP protocol can be used to connect to your
CommuniGate server and to retrieve mail from user mailboxes using POPGate,
i.e. the POPGate module can also work as a POP3 Server.

This version:
1.3.
*?The CommuniGate Server 2.0 services (MIME, codings, etc) are supported now.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Server 2.0 - REAL MIME!

CommuniGate Server

The kernel part of the CommuniGate integrated messaging system is
the CommuniGate Server. When installed, it runs in background and:
* stores all messages sent and received;
* enables network access for CommuniGate users, maintains their
mailboxes, queues, etc.;
* loads and runs CommuniGate modules (i.e. FaxGate, UUCPGate,
VoiceGate, etc.) and creates the run-time environment for those
modules;
* maintains system activity log;
* implements routing algorithms;
* maintains a resource database and provides access to that database
for CommuniGate users and CommuniGate modules (fax cover pages,
sounds, voice scripts, info tables, etc.).

The CommuniGate services can be accessed with the CommuniGator client
software. The client software allows you to compose and read messages,
to manage your mailboxes, etc. It is also used by CommuniGate
administrator to configure, maintain, monitor and control the
CommuniGate server - locally or remotely.

Check to get the latest versions of the
CommuniGate System components.

This version:
2.0
*?MIME support is implemented: messages with styled text and embedded

This program is emailware. If you like it send me a message at
[email protected]

This is a simple connect 4 game with many options, different board sizes,
various levels of difficultly, a tough computer opponent, nice graphics and
a few other surprises, try it out.

Changes in version 1.1.3

-- Fixed lots of memory leaks and reduced RAM requirements by over 400K
-- Fixed a couple bugs that would cause the program to crash if you played it
for too long
-- Fixed some sound bugs.
-- Improved speed for both PPC and 68K versions by almost 80%
-- Now comes as a fat binary for both 68K and PPC's
-- This will probably be the last release of this program for a while. I may
release one final version that improves the computer's speed slighty,
but that may not be for a while

Changes in version 1.1:

-- There are now both PowerPC and 68K versions
-- Smooth Animations and Sounds
-- Fixed a lot of drawing bugs, you no longer see the board being drawn

This program may be freely uploaded to ftp sites, included on shareware
cd-roms, bbs's, and modified for international use (i.e graphics with
different langages, etc.). All I ask is that you send me a letter notifying
me that you plan to alter the program or include it on a cd-rom.

Subject: [*] Finder 7.5.5 Patches

These are several different patches for Finder 7.5.5 (for System 7.5.3).
They will not work on any other version. Some day when someone gets around
to it, we'll have a a single program to edit the Finder with a bunch of
easy program choices. In the meantime, here are a bunch of patch options.

Add "Quit" Menu
Add "Reveal Original" Menu
No "alias" Extension
No Desktop Cleanup
No Zoom Rectangles
Edit Name Delays (4 options)

Use the patches you want on a copy of your 7.5.5 Finder, hide your old
Finder in another folder (save it temporarily in case you don't like the
results of the patch), put the updated version in the System folder and
restart. NOTE: You can only use the name delay patches on a copy of the
Finder which hasn't already been patched by a name delay patch. So if you
want to try out the different delays, it might be a good idea to do it
before patching anything else.

DISCLAIMER: YOU USE THESE PATCHES AT YOUR OWN RISK.

These patches are free, but not for commercial distribution. You use them
at your own risk. All of these patches were done with Michael Hecht's
excellent ResCompare program. Please send any bug reports or comments to me

Subject: [*] Fix for PowerBooks crashing on wake-up with 7.5.3 and RamDoubler

There is a confirmed bug with Ram Doubler 1.6.1 and System 7.5.3 (System
7.5 Update 2.0) that causes PowerBooks to crash instantly when you wake
them up.

There is a fix available on the net... I found it at Ric Ford's Macintouch
web page (which is the one page no mac user should be without!!!):

http://www.macintouch.com/~ricford/

The fix patches one code resource and changes the version number visible in
the "About This Macintosh" box to System 7.5 Update 2.0* so you can tell
the difference.

I installed the fix and it works like a charm.

I also just found it in my trash can, so I decided to send it along! Enjoy.
And, of course, the standard "I'm not the author, I'm just posting it to
benefit the net" disclaimer applies.

Freeguide is a standalone application designed to give the first time user (or
experienced user) a complete guide to Macintosh technology. This has been
written by a friend and is of a very professional appearance with lots of good
information for users. We are an Apple reseller in the UK and find that it
is an
ideal tool for us to put onto new customers machines. It saves lots of
questions
and queries and technician time. Once downloaded, it can be included on any CD
ROM or library as long as it is not modified in any way.

This file describes how I installed a second internal hard drive and
LEDs for both internal drives in a PowerMacintosh 7100 without an
internal CD-ROM drive. It is applicable to the following Macintosh
models which use the same "3-slot-metal" case: Macintosh IIvx, Performa
600, Macintosh Centris 650, Macintosh Quadra 650, PowerMacintosh
7100/66, PowerMacintosh 7100/80.

This file is formatted as setext. It can be read with any text editor,
but a setext-compatible browser, such as Akif Eyler's EasyView, is
required for full benefits of the setext format.

Subject: [*] MathPad 2.4 graphing scientific calculator

MathPad is a general purpose graphing scientific calculator. It uses a text
window rather than simulating buttons on a hand held calculator. This live
scratchpad interface allows you to see and edit your entire calculation.
Formulas can be entered directly and different values can be plugged in for
easy "what if" calculating.

In addition to being a handy little calculator, MathPad can also take on
larger problems. Simple plotting allows quick visualization of results.
General purpose arrays allow calculations involving vectors, complex
numbers, matrix algebra etc. 2D arrays can be displayed as grayscale or
color images. Several examples are included showing such things as equation
solving, curve fitting, vector calculations and numerical solutions of
differential equations.

MathPad does not have all the features of high-end commercial programs such
as Mathematica but it can handle fairly sophisticated numerical problems
with a MUCH smaller memory requirement (190K).

MathPad 2.4.4 is an upgrade intended to replace the previously posted
version 2.3.5. Existing documents will still work with the new version.

Some of the new features:
* PowerPC and 68K applications
* log axes
* plots an array of functions as a family of curves
* expanded interface for XFun plug-ins
* XFuns for 3D plotting, FFT, slider bar controls, etc.
* Bug fixes

MathPad 2.4 runs on a Mac with a 68020 or better and system 7.

This software is free for non-commercial distribution.

Subject: [*] Matrix maker 2.7

This StuffIt binhexed file contains the new version of "Matrix maker", a
Macintosh application designed for the easy creation and formatting of
twelve-tone matrices (12 x 12 arrays) used in the composition and/or
analysis of twelve-tone music. It will also allow the creation and
formatting of 7 x 7, 6 x 6, and 5 x 5 matrices. This application is
designed for use with Microsoft Word for the Macintosh. The preferred MSW
version is v 6.0.1, and this package contains one AppleScript application
for the automatic formatting with MSW 6.x of the data produced by the
Matrix maker program, the "Matrix maker 2.7 script", which automates the
entire process by opening the "Matrix maker 2.7 (fat)" application and then
successively performing the formatting steps without the necessity for any
user intervention other than entering the matrix specifications, unless the
user requests to be prompted each time a matrix has been completely
formatted (this is an optional feature). The package also includes
stationery files that can be used with Microsoft Word 5.1 in the event that
MSW 6.x is not available; in this case, the formatting must be done
manually, but the process is quite simple. The principal difference between
v 2.7 and earlier versions is that v 2.7 allows the user to create any
number of matrices without exiting and re-initializing the application;
this is particularly advantageous if the program is being used in a
networked environment. Several preliminary steps required by earlier
versions have also been eliminated.

This application is freeware and may be included on CD-ROM releases.

Subject: [*] The Charting Coach

Introducing an alternative to contraceptives: The Charting Coach. Did you
know that a woman is only fertile about 100 hours during her menstrual
cycle? You can now confidently identify these hours using the 100% natural
Ovulation Method. This scientifically proven method of avoiding or
achieving pregnancy eliminates all health risks associated with
contraceptives, and it is 99% effective. Millions of couples in over 100
countries already use this safe and inexpensive method. The Ovulation
Method is based on a woman's natural fertility. It is not the rhythm method
or the temperature method. Women with long or irregular cycles, breast
feeding mothers, and even those going through pre-menopause or
discontinuing artificial methods of family planning such as the Pill, IUD,
condom, Norplant, or DepoProvera may use the Ovulation Method safely and
effectively.

Why continue putting your health at risk when there's an inexpensive, safe,
natural, and effective alternative?

The solution turned out to be:

* Use ResEdit to make the AppleShare PDS file at the root level of the hard
drive visible and unlocked.
* Trash the file
* Enable file sharing and reset the preferences for that drive.

Thanks a heap to Phillipe Luc Valiquette for this solution!

Subject: Netscape and RamDoubler

Dear InfoMac folks:

Perhaps someone can comment on a possible system/extension conflict that
can prevent Netscape from working with RamDoubler on a PowerMac 8100AV.
With RamDoubler 1.6.1 active, I find that Netscape loads in OK but just
sits there and refuses to respond further. The problem persists with
Netscape upgraded from v1.1 to v2.0.1. With RamDoubler removed, all is OK.

The fact that other 8100 users have mentioned using Netscape with
RamDoubler suggests that the problem may be a conflict elsewhere. I use
MacTCP v2.0.6 and have all the usual extensions and desktop goodies - too
many to list here. Over time I have found it necessary to disable
QuicKeys, TypeReunion, and all Now utilities except NowMenus and
SuperBoomerang, to achieve a stable system. But the problem with Netscape
with RamDoubler persists.

Are there others who have had this problem - and were you able to fix it?
TIA.

Don.

Subject: Of mice and men

Hi from a Newbie to the net; I hope this isn't old hat.
I always preferred the old, heavy mouse that came with the original
Mac. Recently my light one on our LC has been responding poorly. As an
experiment I tried replacing the light rubber ball with a steel ball
bearing of the same size. It works perfectly and gives me back the old feel
of the original mouse.
Being more of a mechanic than a hacker I hope this may be of value
to some of you who put in so much effort into providing shareware and
freeware.
