Subject: (Q): Untrashable folder

Last week I appealed for help and received eight replies from people to
whom I've e-mailed my thanks. These are the strategies I've used so far,
all unsuccessfully. The only one that remains is to buy MacToolsPro. Does
anyone have any other ideas?

1) Used FastFind to make the folder (in)visible, then empty the trash.

2) Used Norton Wipe Info. 3.1.3. It can see the folder, but not wipe it.

3) Checked it doesn't belong to a disk that wasn't put away right or that
there was some invisible program.

4) Restarted with the extensions off.

5) Rebuilt the desktop.

6) Zapped the PRAM.

7) Booted up from a floppy...the Mac Emergency Disk Tools (which tells me
there is a problem it can't repair.

8) Held down the option key when selecting Empty Trash.

9) Move the folder back to the root of the HD, created a folder on the
desktop with the same name, and then move that folder to the root of the
HD. When it ask to replace the old folder said yes.

I can move the folder round but I can't replace it; every time I try I get
the message that it cannot be deleted as 'it contains items that are in
use.' And that 'an error of type -1,805 occurred.' Whatever that is!

10) Tried to use the HellFolderFix, an application in the /disk/ archive at
info-mac. This brings up a -43 error message - folder not found. But
believe me, it's there!

11) I've also tried DiskDoubling it - it won't.

12) Using DropStuff I get a File Busy warning. I'd hoped DropStuff would
automatically dlete it once it has created a self-extracting archive, but
it wouldn't create one.

13) Norton DiskDoctor informs me that the hard disk directory has some
invalid information. It appears to fix the Catalog Tree but the problem
persists.

The oddest things are that by some methods I'm told the folder doesn't
exist; by others that it's in use. File Buddy tells me it contains 11
items; GetInfo that it's got none! There are no invisible files in it
according to FileBuddy.

And what did happen to the files that were in the folder now it's empty?
The files which were in the folder are ClarisWorks 3.0 accordingto
NortonDiskEditor - only some have no names and were created in 1950; others
contain the correct information. They are unrecoverable.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Subject: 300k Desktop File on Floppy?

I have noticed that the Macs at my school create a 300k desktop file
when they format a floppy disk. Starting with extensions off solves this
problem, but I'm not sure what extension is causing this. The computers
I have noticed this on are 6100/60 PPC running 7.5.3 on an ethertalk
network. If anyone has an idea as to what is happening I'd certainly
appreciate learning what extension (or other) is the culprit.

Curious if I found a bug in 7.5.3, if someone could check my sanity, I would
very much appreciate it. I did this with no other extensions than those
required by my machine (a 7100/66)

Make sure that you have Calculate Folder Sizes on in the Views Control Panel
and are viewing sorted by Name or Size so you can see the sizes.

When you're down a few directories, such as in :Mac HD:Docs:To Sort:Ideas:

Check out the folder size. It's the size of the parent directory of the

Note that this will only happen if you are creating at least the 3rd

display the size of everything on your HD. Or at least I haven't.

Subject: 7.5.3 Update 2.0 experience

Well, after reading all the horror stories regarding this, and since
I have AutoDoubler, CopyDoubler, RAMDoubler installed on both my
IIsi at home and my Centris 610 at work, I was a bit anxious about
taking the plunge.

I ordered the disks from Claris, since I don't have the free time to
d/l off the busy Apple site, and ordered them on disk since I don't
have a CD-ROM at home.

I did not do a clean install. I simply booted up with extensions off
and started running the updater. I ran Custom Installs since I don't
need or want many of the things in the Easy Install.

Took 15 minutes per machine. Had a little trouble with Open
Transport, which I expected, and after shutting it off all works
fine, except CopyDoubler 2.0.6, which I just shut off. Works well
with AutoDoubler and ARA 1.0. Connect to the InterNet by PPP and
have had no problems.

The best part about the Update was telling all my Windoze buddies
that I just installed a 14 disk update and everything works fine.
One colleague has a new Dell compatible and is now STARTING to get
it to work after 10 weeks!

You're probably running a Centris/Quadra 610 DOS Compatible, am I right?
The development name of the original DOS Compatible card (the 486SX/25
one) was Houdini. The .houdini process probably handles some of the
device-arbitration and inter-CPU-data-comms issues.

Subject: [Q]7.5.3 and a Upgraded Mac II

I have a Mac II that I have upgraded with a Daystar PowerCache to a 33Mhz
68030. 8MB of RAM, RAM Doubled, and I have had the floppy FDHD Upgrade. So for
all intensive purposes, my machine is AT LEAST a Mac IIx (more like a IIci or
Performa 600), but the Network Software Selector refuses to turn on Open
Transport, because it says my machine does not have a 68030. Every other piece
of software reports that I have a 68030 installed.

I think it is looking at my model, mac II, and not the actual processor. Does
anyone know of a workaround? Like a way of turning on OT without using Network
Software Selector, or a way to falsify what type of machine I have? (like a
gestalt manager patch or something)

Thanks for the help.

ok guys try this one

i run 7.1 on a centris650 24 meg ram, appletalk, postscript (level1) gcc
blpIIs - ive been using pagemaker 5 without a glitch for a few years now.

i just tryed to print a copy of an old file (1 ive printed many times
before) - nothing too complex but there was a graphic and 2 fonts. anyway
it bombed. with macbug it drops into macbug without it it gives a type 15
error.

a little detective work already done - though it may be a setting on any
number of inits it is not the code itself - i tried starting up with no
inits. don't think its any of the fonts either - changed them even turned
them off (started up without suitcase)

its not the printing either. it seems that any time pagemaker tries to
"initialize filters" it bombs. (like if i try to import something -
anything)

and finally - yes i tried to reinstall pagemaker from the original disks -
same repeatable error.

any thoughts (or should i say HELP!!)

Subject: [Q]pagemaker5.0 redux

recently (earlier this eve - im working hard and desperate here) i asked
about my centris650, pagemaker, and an error 15 when initializing the
filters. well i did a bit of homework and found that aldus has a tech
document on this problem.

they claim that
* The Story Importer 1.0, RTF Import, Word 4.0 Import, Smart ASCII Import,
and ASCII
* Export filters are multi-segment code resources compiled with Think C
4.0. Think C 4.0
* generates incompatible code for CPUs with large data/instruction caches
(e.g., 68040
* processors) when multi-segment code resources are employed.

these filters are all from pgemaker4, removing those filters solves the
problem - supposedly.

see *i dont have those filters* i never had pgmaker4 - and even removing
all the filters doesnt help!

now they do give another "solution" - turn the 040 cache off. well i tried
that and it works (though there is another set of problems with that not
the least of which is speed.

so - what new something do i have that pagemaker is trying to access with
the filkters and acts just like these old filters??

I certainly *hope* someone from both Apple *and* M$ are listening - but
definitely wouldn't bet on it. In an earlier Info-Mac Digest, I reported
on major problems with System 7.5.3 on one PowerMac 6100/60, and after
nearly *40 hours* of research and work, am quite dismayed at the extent to
which various shared library files contributed to this ordeal.

Although I still don't really know the initial *cause* of the problems, I
do know that fixing them ulitimately required not only clean System
installs beginning with 7.0.1, but also *several* time-consuming
re-installs of M$ ExHell, and Wurd 6.0.1 and 6.0 (the latter only because,
for a considerable time, we were convinced that 6.0.1 could *never* be
made to work on the 6100 under System 7.5.3).

ExHell and Wurd just kept on refusing to run, due to a long assortment of
this or that shared library item being missing or damaged (and apparently,
if the computer happens to lose AC power while working in one of these
behemoths, their entire installation can instantly become toast.)

Besides the unnecessary hassles so well described by "abrody," above, all
of this drop-dead *junk* in the System folder is near-fatal to my MO: At
several sites I help to administer, I carry in my main 1-gb
removable-cartridge hard drive, and insert it into a "live" docking unit
on the network server, where it automatically mounts. Then, at any
workstation, I can mount whatever server disk volumes - including my own -
that are needed to access data - or, in *theory* at least, to run
programs.

However, any number of my applications - my single, legal installations of
them - absolutely refuse to run, simply because
*that_particular_workstation* does not happen to have all those
multi-megabytes of shared library, program registration and other junk in
*its_own* System folder. I *could* drag in another docking unit, shut
down the workstation to connect it, and then hope that everything that is
needed to boot this particular model of Mac is active within the
"Universal" version of my own System folder. But why does it have to be
such a hideous mess?

I have seen a couple of post relating to 3M's product and I fail to see the
need for the envy. The Mac has Stickies, and even OS/2 has a Post-it note
feature built in. The major OS that doesn't have this feature is Windows.
So 3M isn't making a Mac version...I'll stick to Stickies...which is
supported at the operating system level and better integrated than anything
that Windows can have. From a developer's point of view, 3M probably looks
at the Mac and says "Will someone pay $$$ for something that they can
already do for free??" If the Apple didn't build in so many parts, then
perhaps I would agree with you...but I like all of those pieces, and the
price is right.

Dear Digest readers,
Netscape Atlas PR1, both the Chat and the other version crash my System
7.5.3 PowerMac 7200 with a type 11 error. This even with 11 MB
allocated to it in the Finder get Info. The Type 11 error occurs while Atlas
runs the Java Applications. Sometimes nothing loads. MacJava which
came out with a week trial release a month ago was more capable of loading
applications than this new version, and crashed less often, though it did
crash. What on earth is Netscape doing about it?

When is there going to be a stable Java?
Who do I report these bugs to, to get a real live response from Netscape
software programmers? I don't want their automated responses (yuck!).

I just want Java to be able to run the Apps that are already programmed. I
have no nead currently to program my own Apps. So Roaster is simply out
of the question, as it is too expensive. Is there a stable Java platform for
the Mac that will run all Java applications? If there isn't now, please
retain a copy of this post to e-mail me when there is one.

Thank you.

Take a look at Micronet's offerings. We've been using a Micronet for
a couple of years now and been very pleased--good product, good support.
I can't give you a model number, because ours is a 2X and it sounds
like you want a 4X, but I know they make one. Their current crop of
CD-Rs come with Toast software, which is just the cat's pajamas.

One little piece of advice--whatever CD-R you settle on, BE SURE you
get an AV-capable hard drive to feed it. Don't let some dealer tell
you "Well, I don't know if it's an AV drive or not 'cause I don't
know what that means, but it's plenty fast," or any similar malarky.
If you have a drive that does automatic thermal recalibration every
ten minutes or so, your CD recording will die and your CD-ROM will
be good for nothing but a frisbee for small people. I know. I've been
there.

Hope this helps, good luck.

I suggest the APS CD-R recorder, their basic model which sells for $999 the
last time I looked. (http:www.apstech.com) Here's why I like it:

* It's a Sony drive in an APS case. Sony were one of the key inventors of
CD, so I trust the machine re: standards. Plus, I simply like Sony stuff.

* It's a 2X. I've heard of problems with 4X drives writing to certain
kinds of media. No first hand knowledge, just tales. Anyway, the
difference is 18 minutes to record a full disc between 2X and 4X; I think I
can live with that for the difference in price. (About $700 last time I
looked.)

* Comes with Toast mastering software. This makes a big difference. CD
mastering software quality and features are all over the block. Toast
isn't perfect, but it's an excellent trade-off of features and flexibility.
It can make Mac, PC or hybrid CDs, CD-I's (if anyone wants them) and even
audio CDs. It's also bulletproof.

On a related note, check out the shareware program (in the Info-Mac
archives) called CDtoAIFF V1.2. This is a GREAT little program that lets
you clone CD tracks onto your hard drive. Toast (and other mastering
software) can use these cloned tracks to make compilation audio CDs. The
program lets you edit tracks, adding fade-ins and -outs with great
accuracy. It is really very, very cool.

You can e-mail me if you need more info.

Suddenly the mouse cursor just disappeared! I could move the mouse, and
juding by the clicking and different applications activating, the mouse was
still working, but the mouse pointer had just outright vanished!
Eventually, by virtually mousing (how else to describe mousing with out any
arrow or dot to follow?) to the application menu and selecting an

Any ideas?

Hello,

My firm has a client who uses Freehand 5.5 and a special font called
CrossStitch to make crossstitch (embroidary) patterns which they
then manufacture and sell. They colors in the patterns on screen
are determined by symbols which each operator types in by hand.
Some of their new files are getting extraordinarily large and they
are not looking forward to adding hundreds of dollars worth of new
RAM to their machines, which already have 24MB. What they are
looking for is a more efficient way of doing their graphs, either in
Freehand, or in an altogether different program. The did try at one
point a program called CrossStitch, but found it to be lacking in
features.
I know this is an extremely specialized arena of graphics they
occupy, but if there is anyone out there who can offer any advice, I
would really appreciate hearing from you.

A little correction: Navagator 2.0 does not include java support. It was
intended to be an interim release. You can get a version of navagator
2.0 that has BETA support for java from netscape's home. Its called
Netscape Navagator Java B1 or whatever the most current version of it
is. Its more stable than Atlas and offers the same Java support. Atlas
PR1 is the development name for Navagator 3.0, however, it is VERY buggy
and spends more time frozen than surfin'. I wouldn't recomend Atlas
unless your a developer.

Luke, try this with ResEdit:

Make a desktop copy of your System file with an -drag, and open
that copy in ResEdit. Scroll down your System window in "View by Type"
until you spot the localization resources, the s.

Locate and click it open, there should be only the one resource
there I think, ID0. Click it open, and six items down you'll see "Always
show keybd. icon" with on/off radio buttons 0 & 1. Just hit the button for
"1", on, save changes and quit ResEdit.

Move your working System file somewhere out of the System Folder (not to
the desktop;-). Move the newly saved desktop copy of System into the
System Folder. Restart, and voila!

Confession: I'm still on 7.5.0 [gasp!], though just about to do Update 2
(the 'Digest has been _so_ useful lately with the early adaptors' comments
on this! thanks everyone!). But I'd put down money that itlc won't have
changed!

Over the last two weeks, I've received about 20 mailings on this subject
with most folks recommending more than one product. Some came directly
to me and some went to the list. I sincerely hope I've managed to respond
personally to each one. If I missed you, I am sorry.

---

A number of folks recommended I take a look at the latest "IFSPLM"...
Internet Freeware/Shareware Programming Languages for the Mac. It is an
excellent reference, and it's in the info-mac archives.

---

Specific products (in most-to-least-votes order):

Metroworks "Discover Programming the Macintosh" book w/ CodeWarrior CD
True Basic
Pictorius Prograph
Apple HyperCard
Symantec Think Pascal (no longer supported)
Allegiant SuperCard (too expensive)
Metroworks CodeWarrior Bronze - C/C++/Pascal
Staz FutureBasic II
Dave Mark's book "Learn C on the Macintosh" w/ Symantec Think C
Userland Frontier / Aretha
Intelligent Technologies Intellibots
LogoMation
SmallTalk (no specific product mentioned, too expensive?)
FaceSpan (AppleScript w/interface builting tools?)

---

In addition to testimonials about each one above, I've had a number of
folks politely warn me away from nearly each as well.... The most
common negative comment was to keep my son away from C and C++ because
they are too difficult to learn, which might discourage him. Other
complaints were registered against HyperCard, BASIC, Pascal, etc...
because each was too old, too this, too that.... I understand every-
one's point of view. All this really means is that no single product
is going to please everyone.

---

I thought the reference to Intellibots was terrific.... I can't
vouche for the quality of the product myself (yet), but I'm certainly
going to check it out. Talk about making programming concepts fun
for a kid! http://www.xmission.com/~intltech/home.html

I'm also swayed by testimonials on the freeware Prograph Classic.
I'll have to take a look at it for more serious instructional work.
http://www.pictorius.com/pi/products/cl ... assic.html

Haven't yet made up my mind on the more traditional "lines-o-code"
languages... C/C++/Pascal/modern-basics.... I may end up with one of
these for myself, and exposure to a programming environment more
traditional than the two above would do my son some good as well.

I have, however, decided to stay away from HyperCard/SuperCard,
AppleScript/Aretha, and Logo variations. Despite glowing testimonials,
I just can't work up any enthusiasm for these as instructional
languages for my son, and they don't interest me personally.

SmallTalk? I've always wanted to see it in action, but can't afford
the commercial versions I'm aware of. Maybe there's something in that
IFSPLM?....

That's it! Thanks for all your input, folks.

How about adding an indicator of the foreign language code in the subject

Hi everyone,

As for the problem I had, described in the last digest, I've resorted to
insert recipient addresses, one by one, to a blank text document. Eudora
for Windows stores these addresses in a plain text file, which isn't a bad
idea. However -- surprise --, after copying the few dozens of addresses of
Eudora Mac, one by one if I may insist, I've found out, when importing that
document into the Eudora Win folder, that the recipient-related menus DON'T
scroll down...

Windows 3.x is obviously from another solar system, where I guess there is
no gravity whatsoever, or at least apples do not fall down from trees...

Hope that helps someone out there in the future...

Does anyone out there recognize this problem?

I have been trying to use Netscape to run Java applets and Scripts
without success. I have been to sights that I know Netscape 2 betas
could handle (one being http://www.zoop.com) so I assume that the
release version should be able to handle them also. It doesn't.

To try to remedy the problem, I have checked _multiple_ times to make
sure that Java Script is not disabled in Security Preferences and have
loaded a fresh copy twice after cleaning out the preferences files.
Aside from these things, I am at a loss.

Other possibly pertinent information: I have the educational version of
Netscape 2.01, have done the 7.5.3 upgrade and am still using MacTCP with

Subject: OT/AppleTalk/Modem, No room for StyleWriter?

OK - After lurking for months, I finally have a question that I
haven't seen addressed within this forum...

I finally made the BIG upgrade today to Update 2.0 (9am to 1am!),
switching from MacTCP to Open Transport in the process. All went
well, though tedious. My question - now that my LC III (20Mb RAM,
80Mb int. HD, ext. ZIP, Supra FaxModem) is again running smoothly,
how do I use my StyleWriter 2400 serial printer?

OT forces me to turn LocalTalk on even though I have no need for
local network services. That's my printer port. My dial-up Internet
access (and occasional fax use) snatches the modem port. Leaving my
StyleWriter lonely and portless...

I downloaded SingleTalk 1.1 since it seemed to directly address my
need but there's no Network control panel available under OT and the
AppleTalk control panel doesn't seem to see SingleTalk. What am I
doing wrong? Am I overlooking something simple?

----------
NB - Does Apple mention explicitly anywhere in the documentation for
Update 2.0 that one needs to specifically install OT AFTER the Easy
Install if MacTCP was in use before the upgrade? That cost me an
hour or so...

NB II - I should note that I had problems getting OT running until I
disabled ClipFolio, of all things. Not sure about it as I only
started trying ClipFolio about four days ago, but...

Is everyone's first post this long? Sorry. And thx in advance.

As a polyglot myself, I don't object to foreign-language posts here (I've
made a few of 'em myself). However, the volume of this list has grown such
that it may make more sense for "our brethern overseas" to do this for

One option is the shareware package Church Windows by Dair Grant. Works
fine for me under 7.5.3. Church Windows 1.2 allows you to change the style
of windows used by your Mac, using a system of plug-ins. Features include:
- All window styles are native for PowerMacs.
- Windows can be dragged around as solid shapes, not outlines.
- All window colour schemes can be changed.
- Windows can be resized from any corner, when appropriate.
- Eight supplied window styles: Copland 3D, Microsoft Windows 3.1,
Microsoft Windows 95, Motif, NeXT, Reversed NeXT, Silicon Graphics IRIX , A
'grow-handled' System 7, and A native System 7.

Subject: Sys 7.5.3 (So I was Wrong!)

Durn! Crow isn't the tastiest bird I've eaten lately.

I had previously said that the 7.5.3 update was not my favorite thing
in the world. Well, actually I said I thought the "U" version was not a
system. Rather it was the kitchen sink. I still agree with myself there.

I hung up at that point and decided to await the CD-ROMs I'd ordered from
Claris before inflicting 7.5.3 on *anything* but my own office machine. I
was properly amazed when the CD's arrived today (Yes, I ordered two) from
Claris with a "no charge" note. Yes, I'd seen the MacWeek article saying
Apple wouldn't charge for the CD's, but I didn't really believe it.

Having nothing better to do this Friday night in Bleaksburg, I decided
to see what would die upon installation of the upgrade on my pitiful IIci
at home -- internet access via MacSLIP. Dayum! Bet y'all didn't know that
was a two-syllable word in the US South. I told Network Software Selector
to use Open Transport instead of "Classic" appletalk. It picked up all my
MacTCP parms. I am talking to you now via OT 1.1 with *nothing* else
changed. I didn't have to tell OT anything. Not bad, Apple.

And all I did was what the Apple folk suggested. Turn off *almost* all
but System 7.5 in Extensions Manager (I had to keep FWB's CD-ROM Toolkit
active to see the CD-ROM in my beastly old NEC CDR-72 drive). Then do an
easy install.

Scream? Been there. Done that. I was and am annoyed with what Apple says
is a universal System 7.5.3 (Horse droppings! And watch where you step),
but I was more worried than necessary about the "easy install" option for
even a really old Mac like this IIci at home.

Yeah, lots of folk have said "no problem, mon" with the 7.5.3 upgrade,
and lots of others disagreed. I was among the others. I still do not at
all think well of System 7.5.3 (U), but I do think better of non-U. I am,
in fact, blown away by how well it works.

Subject: System 7.5.3 Conflict?

I have just updated to System 7.5.3 and have found a real unusual
conflict. The extension "Apple CD-ROM" hangs my system during startup.
This does not seem to be an extensions conflict; the hang occurs with
only the extension loading from a completely clean system install/
upgrade.

I have tried Apple CD-ROM version 5.1.2 (which comes with System 7.5.3)
and 5.0.4 (which came with my CD-ROM drive). Version 5.0.4 worked with
System 7.5 and 7.5.1 just fine.

Details: PowerPC 8100/80, 24 MBytes RAM, EXTERNAL Apple 600e CD-ROM
drive. No other SCSI devices. I did a clean System 7.5 install from the
original floppy disks and an upgrade to 7.5.3 from the CD-ROM sent to me
by Apple.

Has anyone else seen this? Apple support was not in the least bit
helpful guiding me in tracking this down. It took several hours on my
own. They also seemed a bit nonchalant about documenting this problem.

Thanks all.

Subject: Transferring Eudora Mail to Disks in the Fewest Steps

I would like be able to eliminate some of the steps I use to transfer
downloaded email to floppy disks. I am using Eudora Pro and System 7.5 on
a 6100/66.

Presently, I receive about 15 messages per day. I usually read them,
delete most, and save the rest. First, I transfer the ones I want to save
to folders according to named sources, e.g., Friends, Family members, User
Groups, etc., and later, copy each folder on a separate disk. This
requires about 8 steps. Perhaps I could do it in say, only two or three.

1. From the Eudora menu, transfer each message to a named mail folder or
create a new folder.
2. Open hard drive
3. Open system folder
4. Open Eudora Folder
5. Insert desired disk
6. Find folder or message to be copied
7. Copy selected folder or message on a disk
8. Delete copied messages from Eudora folder

To facilitate the process I merge steps 2 thu 4 when I copy a large number
of messages from my mail folders at the end of the month; however, I may be
using more steps than necessary for the rest.

Perhaps there is a way to automatically transfer most new incoming and
outgoing messages to my mail folders by having a keyword in their title
(e.g., Info-Mac), thereby eliminating much of the time consuming effort in
step 1.

I would appreciate any suggestions to make this process more efficient.

Aloha,

Ed Cesar
