Subject: [*] Chiral 1.0.3 Installer
Webster defines Chiral as "a kind of symmetry found in atomic particles
that is not superimposable on its mirror image." Ambrosia redefines this
dry scientific adjective with a mind melter of a puzzle game.
MacUser awarded this new definition of fun with their Shareware of the
Year Award for 1994. MacWeek says "With the release of Chiral, Ambrosia
is breaking its creative bonds...With repeated play comes an appreciation
of the subtle beauty and elegant sophistication of its design." Inside
Mac Games calls Chiral "a uniquely creative action-strategy game that is
just as much fun to watch as it is to play."
Chiral is a fusion between the scientific concept of atomic bonding and
the addictive game play of Tetris. Players are challenged to form bonds
between atoms to create inert molecules before the atoms overflow from a
vial. Points are scored by the complexity of the molecular pattern and
the speed with which it is assembled. Not to worry, a doctorate in atomic
chemistry is not needed; an interactive tutorial, Chiral Basics, is
included with the package. Chiral has six separate difficulty settings
and twenty four levels of puzzling play, for a grand total of 144 screens
of mind-boggling fun and excitement.
This mind-testing Ambrosia program is the fruit of a collaboration
between Macintosh developer Trevor Powell and Ambrosia Software's
prolific founder Andrew Welch. Chiral is a combination of high resolution
256 color graphics, funky digitized sound effects, and addictively
puzzling game play.
Price: $15.00

Subject: [*] WindowMenu 1.2J - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of the WindowMenu control panel and extension.
What is WindowMenu?
WindowMenu is a utility that exists to let you do one thing: jump direct
ly to a specific window in an application. Although I have a big monitor, I
often find myself going through all kinds of contortions to get to a window
I know is open but that is buried under a hundred others. Applications with
$B%a(JWindows$B%b(J menus help things somewhat, but you still have to make
the trip to the menu bar.
WindowMenu will pop up a menu of all open windows in the current applica
tion and let you select one directly when you click anywhere while holding d
own control keys that you choose. It also lets you define a hotkey to cycle
forward and backwards through all open windows. I use it every day and I thi
nk if you give it a try, you may too.
WindowMenu is $10US shareware.
Version 1.2 (Mar 31st 1996) fixes the hotkey conflict with CopyPaste und
er non-Roman systems; the window-cycling hotkeys now work with CopyPaste ins
talled. English and non-Worldscript versions of the MacOS were never affecte
d by this problem. A problem with the 'a' key on WorldScript systems acting
"reluctantly" when none of the options had been chosen is also fixed. Also a
dded default settings for the popup menu and hotkeys, and removed the abilit
y to use CAPS lock as part of a hotkey, as this seemed to do more harm than
good.

Subject: [*] WordHider 1.0
WordHider 1.0 is a program to create word-search puzzles from a vocabulary
you supply. With no built-in vocabulary, it is not a program for puzzle
fans to generate their own puzzles. It also does not *solve* puzzles for
you, just creates them.
It is intended for parents and teachers to generate puzzles for educational
purposes. (I use it for my daughter's spelling lists, and a friend uses it
for teaching English.)
It includes faclities for laying out the generated puzzle, the word list,
and other layout items, on a printed page. It allows unused puzzle cells
to be filled with random text or with a "hidden message" and can print a
fill-in-the-blanks area to receive the message.
It's freeware. I retain the copyright and owner rights, but you are free
to use it and redistribute it without charge. No warranty.
The program, a document in Microsoft Word 5.1 format, and this README file
are enclosed in this self-extracting archive.
This is a 68020+ version. It's been tested on system 7.1 and system 7.5,
on a 7100, 2-si, and 540. Needs about 3MB of disk, and 3MB of free RAM to
run. A PPC version will follow. (On request, I could generate a 68000
version, but cannot test it, and I suspect the program might be too heavy
for very old Macs.)

Subject: 1710AV/Sys 7.5.3 problem
I've a little problem with my 1710AV monitor that it is connected to a
PowerMac 8500/120.
I've set the resolution of the monitor to 1024x768 but after upgrading my
system to the version 7.5.3 a strange thing happen.
When I boot my system the "Welcome to Macintosh" is show at 19"
resolution but at the moment of showing the MacOS logo my monitor switch
to 14" (640x480) resolution and return at 19" only at the moment of
showing the desktop.
This is not a serious problem but I liked to stay for all the boot at the
19" resolution.
A hint for any one who can help me. If a boot my Mac with the shift key
down (extension disabled) all work correct (boot at 19" resolution), but
if I boot with all the extension disabled using the Now Startup Manager
(part of Now Utilities 5.0.2) or putting all my extension out of the
extension folder, the boot is at 14" resolution.
Please respond to my e-mail address.

I've installed it on my PowerWave132 and I've had fantastic results!! OT
doesn't
crash
at all anymore and my Type 11 system errors are almost non existant!!! I did
have to do
a clean install of 7.5.2, but I think that had more to do with the problems I
was having
due to that system's instability and the write cache problems with the Fireball
drive
I'm using.

Well, I never worked with System Update 1.0 personally, but the improvements in
speed,
stability, and quality in SU 2.0 are quite profound for me. Write me for more
speciaif
details. I can't say enough good things about the upgrade!

Nothing to my knowledge that hasn't been addressed by upgrades (already!).

I am too. I had to use the crappy 1.0.8 and the betas and was just about to
throw my
computer out the window. OT 1.1 seems to be quite stable for me. Better
throughput
than MacTCP ever was.

I use Eudora Light, Newswatcher, Netscape 2.01, Mosaic 3.0 beta, Anarchie 1.6,
and all
the appropriate plug-ins and other web programs with no problems!

Well, I wouldn't say the speed difference for me is phenomenal, but it is
noticeable.
I wouldn't hesitate to tell someone to use OT 1.1, but as for the betas and
earlier
releases, they (honestly) suck!
Feel free to write me with any questions or information.

[I'''m leaving any repeating/missing characters in this msg. as they occur to
illustrate the problem.]
Based on the responses I''ve received, the Apple Adjustable Keyboard is often
defective (and this is likely why it was discontinued). There are lots of
people with exactly the same problem (sadly, because we all loved using these
things). I heard frm some folks who've goone through 3 sets of replacement
keyboards.
I contacted Apple SOS and customer service, but received noo satisfaction.
They want $186 to replace each of my keyboards [I have three that have all
failed at about the same time, aboout two years]. This is more than I paid
originally! The service rep. said it wouldn''t be fair to AppleCare
subscribers if Apple cut me a break oon repairs/replacement.
I have appealed higher up in Apple and will report the results here. I will
suggest they offer ALL Adjustable Keyboard owners a decent trade-in for the
Apple Extended Keyboard. They shoould recgnize that we paid a premium price
for our keyboards and expect better quality than this.

Subject: [A] System 7.5.3 Crashes
Dear Mark,
>>>After following the System 7.5.3 postings in the last ten or so Info-Mac
Digests, I offer the following comments:
The 2.0 Update so far is stable on:
1. IIci (12mb RAM, plus RAM Doubler)>>Norton Disk Doctor 3.2.1 was run prior to installing the Update, with no
problems reported. Now, however, there is a Volume Bitmap problem that
Norton purports to fix, but which always reappears on every subsequent run
of the program. So, the behavior at this point *may* be due to disk
corruption - caused by System 7.5.3? - or something else entirely? Who
knows?>>The PB 5300e has the "Universal System Folder" on its hard drive, and when
it is set to PB SCSI disk mode, the IIci boots from it just fine. Best of
all, the Finder, using the IIci's internal video with an Apple Portrait
Display, has now sped up to the point that it *almost* equals System 6.0.8
- which is to say, nearly double!

Bonjour,
I am having considerable problems with my PB 5300C, system 7.5.2 FR and the
Apple PCMCIA 28.8 fax modem that came with it.
After three days of use the modem went into permanent fax mode, I have
tried another modem and it is the same so the problem is software.
I have zapped PR, reinstalled the system, changed Mac TCP, Mac PPP and
thrown out all my preferences three or four times - nothing has changed.
I should try reinitialising my HD and reinstalling everything from scratch,
but I work for my living too... and if I have to do this every three days
it could become quite tiresome...
Anyone have any clues where I can find the evil root of this problem ?
Where are modem preferences written ?
TIA

7.5.3
You've heard this many times by now, but for the doubting Thomases out
there, here's another affidavit. Our Power Mac at work with newly-installed
System 7.5.3 and long-ago-installed RAMDoubler 1.6.1 was randomly hanging
ten to fifteen times a day. Force-Quitting and Command-Power-On-ing had no
effect: the cursor just stopped moving and everything froze up. After
installing MacsBug 6.5.3 this morning and rebooting, I went the rest of the
day without a single glitch. Yee-hah!
P.S. There's also an unofficial system patch from Tony Andreoli:
I haven't tried this, but it's much smaller (12K vs. 481K) and since it's
just a patch, it probably doesn't use any extra memory. Both are worth a
shot. Hope this helps.

Java is only available in the pre-release version available for PowerPC
only (Atlas PR1). The next release version will support it on 68K Macs. The
current 2.0 release *doesn't* support Java.

There's nothing wrong with your system - that's just the way VM works. VM
needs to create a swap file the *TOTAL* size of the amount of virtual
memory you specify - NOT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE VIRTUAL & REAL MEMORY
SIZES.
Connectix used to make a version of Virtual that did use only the amount of
disk space needed for the "extra" RAM, but I'm not sure if they still sell
it. You could also use Ram Douber, which doesn't use ANY disk space in most
cases. It's also a lot faster than disk-based VM (still noticeably slower
than no VM, but not annoyingly slow) but with all of the benefits, such as
reducing the RAM requirements for native applications.

Subject: Keyboard Menu
InfoMacers-
Long, long ago, I (manually) patched System 7.1 on my IIcx with the effect
of establishing a helpful "keyboard" menu. This menu allowed a choice of
keyboard layouts, and set over by the baloon help menu (which, incidently,
had a much nicer icon than the "Apple Guide" one"). Now that I have a PM
7200/90, with System 7.5.3 (yes, I wen with the overnight download of the
patcher), I don't have it. Does anyone know whether there is a way to patch
7.5.3 the same way? And how do I do it? I would appreciate it.

Subject: Messages in foreign languages
Well, "foreign" depends on the frame of reference, doesn't it ?
But seriously, have you given any thought as to what policy should be
applied to multiple posts of the same message but in translation ?
One of the advantages of info-mac over the unmoderated newsgroups is
that it has been distilled to a more manageable size. If we end up
having multiple posts with the same content, but in different languages,
a lot of that advantage will be lost.
Yes, it is unfair, but we do need to ask whether this adds any value
to the net, or whether it just adds to the congestion on the information
superhighway.
Looking at the MIT news server, I can actually find three non-English
Mac-related newsgroups (fr.comp.sys.mac, fj.sys.mac, no.mac). The
Japanese (fj) newsgroup raises another question of "fairness" too - What
convention will be used for non-Roman languages? Encoding of non-English
alphabets is a pain even for European languages, but how about non-Roman
languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew etcetera ? There
are two major (incompatible) encoding systems for Chinese, with several
minor variants as well. Which convention should be adopted by info-mac ?
Multiply that by every other possible language, and becoming truly
multicultural will be a very painful process, even if it seems
attractive at first sight.

or four lines per mesage to the digest. I also expect there to be very few
of these messages (but could be wrong!).
As to encodings. Since we don't include MIME formatting specifics in our
messages, it would be hard to do any other encoding that, well, what you see
here. Thus, people will be forced to use the roman alphabet to write
phonetic (sp?) versions of their messages. Sorry. -Gordon]

No, all you're doing is creating a series of two-picture morphs, so what
you want is something that can concatenate a series of morphs.
Any morphing app should be able to do this. Basically, you'll set up a
series of morphs:
Grade 1 into Grade 2, Grade 2 into Grade 3, Grade 3 into Grade 4, etc.
You'll then concatenate the morphs into a finished movie.

Do you mean an incoming call on the same phone line you are using to
connect to the net, as in Call Waiting?
If so, your indication of an incoming call will most likely be a broken
connection to the net.
If you disable Call Waiting before connecting to the net, as you should,
then you can't get any incoming calls.
I can think of two solutions:
- get voice mail from your phone company. If your phone is busy, the
caller can leave a
message. This will probably cost around $8-10/mo.
- install a second phone line for use with your modem. This will
probably cost around
$20/mo, but you completely eliminate interference between netting and
regular calls.
You probably don't need any new wiring for this.

Connectix recently discovered a conflict between RAM Doubler and System
Update 2.0 on some PowerBook models. The conflict results in an error
type 8 when the PowerBook wakes from Sleep.
One reason this problem has been difficult to track down is that the
conflict does not occur when Macsbug is installed (Macsbug traces around
the error). We do not recommend installing Macsbug if you are unfamiliar
with how it works.
This is a top priority issue for Connectix engineering, and we plan to
address the conflict in the next release of RAM Doubler. Free updates to
this version will be available on the Connectix web page
(www.connectix.com), and will also be uploaded to Info-Mac. We do not
have an estimate as to when this update will be available.
Please contact Connectix Tech Support if you have any additional
questions.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I believe that the Virtual Memory Manager=
always reserves an amount of disk space equal to the desired total memory=
size. To get 26Mb total memory, you need 26Mb of disk space.
Whenever the computer tries to access a 'page' of memory that currently=
isn't stored in physical RAM, the VM Manager must find it on the hard disk=
and read it into RAM. If there isn't any unused RAM available, it must=
first make some RAM available by moving a page of data from RAM to the hard=
disk, and before it can do this it must find an unused page of hard disk=
space. If all 26Mb of 'total' memory is full, the VM Manager will still=
need at least one more page of hard disk space so that it can swap a page=
of RAM out to make room for something else. So in your case, the VM=
Manager would need *at a minimum* 2Mb + 1 page of hard disk space.
However, with that minimal amount of hard disk space, the VM Manager=
couldn't keep the pages in the VM disk file stored in any particular order.=
Whenever it had to find a certain page of data to be read into RAM, it=
would have to search a table (kept in RAM) to find out where that page is=
located on the hard disk; ditto to find an unused page. And it would have=
to update that table whenever it moved a page of data between RAM and hard =
disk.
Instead, the VM Manager reserves an amount of hard disk space equal to the=
desired total memory size. When it wants to get a page of data from the=
hard disk, it doesn't have to search any tables -- the 217th page of=
virtual memory will always be found in the 217th page of the VM disk file. =
Ditto when it wants to move a page from RAM to the hard disk -- it always=
knows exactly where it can store that page. The amount of time saved isn't=
much compared to the amount of time it takes for disk accesses, but with=
something as inherently slow as virtual memory, every microsecond you can=
save helps.
As for the advice you got from Apple Tech Support: I suspect you actually=
spoke to Customer Support; they're generally able to handle the problems=
that most customers call about, but they have little if any technical=
knowledge. Calls don't get redirected to real technicians until after the=
customer support representatives have done their best to solve the=
customer's problem and failed.

>the needed 2M. I have called Apple Tech Support; they recommended a clean

The Apple Tech Support rep you spoke to is insane.
This is the way VM has always worked. The VM Storage file which is
created on your drive is always as big as your total memory setting. It
sure would be nice if it were only as big as the delta between real RAM
and virtual RAM, but then VM would be even slower.
Imagine that this diagram represents your 26M of logical RAM:
|--system---|---frontier---|---bbedit---|---netscape---|---illustrator---|-
--pagemaker---|
Some portion of that is in real RAM; let's say that everything except
BBEdit is in real RAM. Now, when the system needs to swap BBEdit into
real RAM, it can just pitch stuff out of real RAM to make enough space,
then read BBEdit from the swap file, since everything in real RAM is
essentially backed up on disk.
If the swap file on disk was only 2M, then when the system needed to swap
BBEdit into real RAM, it would have to write some of real RAM to disk,
read a bit of the swap file, write some more to disk, read some more of
the swap file, etc. Much slower.
I'm vastly simplifying the process, but that's basically how I understand
it to work.

dry scientific adjective with a mind melter of a puzzle game.
MacUser awarded this new definition of fun with their Shareware of the

Chiral is a fusion between the scientific concept of atomic bonding and
the addictive game play of Tetris. Players are challenged to form bonds
between atoms to create inert molecules before the atoms overflow from a

the speed with which it is assembled. Not to worry, a doctorate in atomic

(part of Now Utilities 5.0.2) or putting all my extension out of the
extension folder, the boot is at 14" resolution.

have to do

I am too. I had to use the crappy 1.0.8 and the betas and was just about to
throw my
computer out the window. OT 1.1 seems to be quite stable for me. Better
throughput
than MacTCP ever was.

Well, I wouldn't say the speed difference for me is phenomenal, but it is
noticeable.
I wouldn't hesitate to tell someone to use OT 1.1, but as for the betas and

[I'''m leaving any repeating/missing characters in this msg. as they occur to

Dear Mark,

I should try reinitialising my HD and reinstalling everything from scratch,

Anyone have any clues where I can find the evil root of this problem ?
Where are modem preferences written ?

You've heard this many times by now, but for the doubting Thomases out

System 7.5.3 and long-ago-installed RAMDoubler 1.6.1 was randomly hanging

effect: the cursor just stopped moving and everything froze up. After
installing MacsBug 6.5.3 this morning and rebooting, I went the rest of the
day without a single glitch. Yee-hah!
P.S. There's also an unofficial system patch from Tony Andreoli:
I haven't tried this, but it's much smaller (12K vs. 481K) and since it's
just a patch, it probably doesn't use any extra memory. Both are worth a

As to encodings. Since we don't include MIME formatting specifics in our

Connectix recently discovered a conflict between RAM Doubler and System

type 8 when the PowerBook wakes from Sleep.
Please contact Connectix Tech Support if you have any additional
questions.

The first was from Jonathan Sutton who correctly advised me to use the

Subject: SE/30 video repairs
Hi chaps,
After 5 years use, my trusty SE/30 is showing signs of capacitor
failure in the video circuit; the screen is jittery in the horizontal
direction, and the linearity is becoming poor.
I know the recommended course is to replace the 3.9uF non-polarised
electrolytic capacitor on the analog board. My problem is that all my
regular component suppliers skip this value. Can anyone advise on the
wisdom of substituting a 3.3uF or 4.7uF please? (Preferably soon, so I have
a chance to view the reply

Does anyone know of a viewer that will read :ccMail?

I'm vastly simplifying the process, but that's basically how I understand
it to work.
