Subject: [*] Alias Daemon 1.0

This is a BinHexed file of a Stuffit archive of Alias
Daemon 1.1. Alias Daemon does some clever behind the scenes
trickery to allow you to create an alias in a location other
than the folder containing the original item. It runs as a
combination INIT and background-only application (appe).

To use Alias Daemon, pop it in your extension folder and
restart. Hold down the option key and choose 'Make Alias'
>From the Finder's file menu. Read the online help for more
information. Its operation should be fairly self-explanatory.

It *requires* System 7.5 or above and the Finder Scripting
Extension. It is written in 68000 code. Memory requirements
are modest - about 50K of System heap.

This is a tune I composed a couple years ago; inspired by Amy Tan's book the
Joy Luck Club being turned into a movie, it is an attempt to capture the
sense of merging of cultures. I cleaned the original muddy MIDI file with
MIDIgrapher and it now sounds good enough for public consumption. (try it in
QT Musical Instruments or with Miracle keyboard instrument options).

Subject: [*] GifBuilder 0.3.1

GifBuilder 0.3.1 is a utility to create animated GIF files, which quickly
become a popular way to include short movies in Web pages. Its input is
an existing animated GIF, a bunch of PICT, GIF and/or TIFF files, or a
QuickTime movie, and its output is a GIF89a file with multiple images.
Options include color palette, pixel depth, interlacing, transparency,
interframe delay, disposal method, frame offset, looping and dithering.
Animations can be previewed. Comprehensive scripting support. Fat binary.

Main changes since 0.3: saving bug fix on Macs 68k, color palette saving,
one more cross-platform color palette, minor user interface improvments
and bug fixes.

GifBuilder 0.3.1 is freeware (see the readme file for the details).

I have installed (clean, 7.5, then update #2) it on my PB 520 (12 meg + 12
meg from Apple Virtual Mem) and have no problem with sleep. In fact, in the
weeks prior to my updating, my Mac had refused to wake from sleep. Now it
behaves just fine. Something else to blame?

In the mean time, does anyone have any experience with the Apple PowerPC
upgrade card for the PB 5x0 series? Apple tells me that it IS available and
shipping (at least in academic sales), yet I have read nothing about it!

I just upgraded both my LC 630 and PB5300cs. The only problems I've
encountered so far involved Open Transport. I was using MacPPP 2.0.1 on the
PB, and found that under OT, it wouldn't react to a connect command. This
was solved by switching to FreePPP 1.0.5. Runs great now. On the PowerMac I
am seeing a small speed increase.

On the LC, I tried to connect to the campus TCP/IP with OT, but haven't
been able to get it to work yet. Just haven't found the time to play with
it. Haven't noticed anything else. Installed using the NetInstall package
and it worked flawlessy.

I installed it on a 7500 and _had_ to start with a clean install
since I couldn't update my Swedish system version. When I had
updated a "universal" 7.5 I just copied it to the regular startup
disk and moved the the third party stuff and preferences from the
7.5.2 System Folder to the new one. Hardly a very "clean"
installation but I mention it since I had no problems whatsoever
which implies that a normal update should not cause any problems
either.

If you have an easily accessable backup I'd suggest you try to
update your present system first. You can always go for a clean
install if it doesn't succeed.

>2) What definite practical advantages of 7.5.3 over 7.5.2 have you

Disk operations seem to be faster. I used to have a various
problems with AppleTalk and they disappeared with the update. File
transfers via TCP/IP (using PPP) is slightly faster and of course
significantly faster than when I had MacTCP. I switched to Open
Transport when 1.0.8 was released. I'd say it's indeed a major
improvement.

>3) What applications, extensions, CPs, etc don't work under 7.5.3 that did
>work under 7.5.2? Have you found solutions?

Well, I use a lot of apps and my Control Panels and Extensions
folders are loaded too. Only Aaron 1.3 presented a problem.
Solution: upgrade to 1.3.1.

>4) I'm annoyed that Open Transport is apparently "required" for PCI Macs

It should be possible the same as when you downgraded from
whatever OT version that was installed with your 7.5.2 but the NSS
app will not help you unless there is a difference here in the
PowerWaves. I can't understand that anyone would want that pesky
MacTCP tho'.

>5) What communication applications *still* don't work under Open Transport
>1.1? I've read one report that Eudora Lite doesn't work, but haven't seen
>that confirmed.

Eudora Lite certainly works, as it did with Open Transport 1.0.8.
I use a full battery of comm apps and I've only encountered one
that doesn't work: MacTCP Monitor. MacTCP Watcher doesn't give as
much information as it did with MacTCP. InterSLIP doesn't work
well with OT but there are good alternatives.

>6) Just what advantages does Open Transport really offer? Someone claimed

>reproducible?

Open Transport is definitely faster but a sustained transfer rate
of >8 kbps is not realistic on a 21,600 modem connection. It is
also more stable and easier to use than MacTCP; this was true for
OT 1.0.8 and is even more so in 1.1.

I have also read a _lot_ of reports on how how "bad" Open
Transport is but one should keep in mind that it is users who
encounter problems that keep writing to lists, forums and usenet
groups. The rest of us, I dare say a majority, have no reason to
do so but on the other hand, I've certainly learnt a lot by
reading and to some extent taking part in the discussions.

I'd like to add that I haven't been able to reproduce many of the
problems I've read about, and that has not been due to a lack of
trying. In my opinion, Open Transport has been blamed for many
totally unrelated problems.

Good luck.

I've already had an off-line conversation with the author of the claimed
8+ kcps download on a 21600 connection (I figured it must have been a
typo). Turns out his claim was based on a simple misinterpretation... it
wasn't real. He was actually getting about 3+ kcps on .hqx files.

Can't be sure, but try access the Sound cdev. Press 'Opions' under 'Sound

You mentioned sound input problems with the 7500. Which microphone are
you connecting to the new machines? The 7500 requires a PlainTalk
microphone, which produces a *Line-level* audio input. This means the
signal you feed into the audio-in port must be amplified to about 1Vpp.

If you are using the old microphones from previous, pre-PPC machines,
then this is likely your problem. The easiest solution is to purchase
PlainTalk microphones for the 7500 machines. If you are using a special
microphone arrangement, you may have to invest in some sort of pre-amp.

Note that the line-level inputs of the 7500 should now accept output
>From standard audio equipment. Of course, you will need a suitable patch
cord (Radio has these).

I'm not working on it, but I have one! It's called Sound Input Strip, and I got

Pat,

A simple way is to install the shareware version on GateKeeper virus

it is an excellent virus protection program. Along with Gatekeeper is

I have a problem with a Powerbook 145. Periodically, it does not

hardware problem. I'm wondering if it could be the RAM?

As anyone ever experienced this unsual music with a faulty Powerbook?

As of now, I'm using System 7.5.3. BTW, the problems were also occurring

I would appreciate any help.

Does anybody know a way to make the Sound control panel keep its

Under Edit/Preferences there's an option to "Save after modification"; you
might check that box.

Clearly you need to run at least Disk First Aid, and preferably Norton
Utilities or MacTools Pro--several times each. If you then encounter
problems, you might consider trashing your Easy View preferences file.

Consider PortShare Pro from Stalker Software. It allows several Macs to
"publish" their serial ports to all or specified other networked users.
For example, at work, we have only one modem...but anyone can use it (one
at a time, of course!).

PortShare Pro works well in conjunction with LineShare, also from Stalker,
which listens for and intercepts incoming calls to determine whether
they're intended for Apple Remote Access (ARA), fax modem, or data modem,
then routes them accordingly to the appropriate software (which may be
running on the same or another computer on the network) via the associated
virtual port.

For example, when I log in from home, our fax software never knows that a
call has come in for our ARA server, because LineShare doesn't open the fax
modem's virtual port under these circumstances.

Conversely, when someone sends a fax, ARA never knows about the fax,
because LineShare routes the incoming fax directly to the fax software's
virtual port, and never even tells ARA that there was an incoming call.

Hope this helps. Cheers,

Sure; just change their names.

So, if you need "myINIT" to load after "yourINIT", just rename the former
to "zmyINIT". If "myINIT" is somehow sensitive to having its name
changed, rename the latter to "ayourINIT".

You can also change the locations of many Extensions and Control Panels.
For example, most Control Panels will run fine if they are in the
Extensions folder or even sitting loose in the System Folder. This gives
you some more flexibility in ordering things, since the MacOS will load,
at startup:
INITs in the Extensions folder, in alphabetical order, then
INITs in the Control Panels folder, in alphabetical order then
INITs loose in the System folder, in alphabetical order.
[when I say "INITs", I am referring to any file that contains startup
code: INITs, cdevs, etc.]

Of course, if you move Control Panels out of their usual location, you'll
probably want to make an alias in the CP folder so you can get at it
easily.

I'm sure you've already gotten the answer: Extensions load in alphabetical
order, so you can change the order by modifying the name. Any of the
following will make an item load relatively early in the process:

* add one or more leading spaces
* copy one or more carriage returns in your word processor, then paste them
at the beginning of the name (the Finder ignores carriage returns in display)
* use numbers preceding the names
* some punctuation (use PopChar to see the order), e.g. !, $, #, %, &, (, )

To delay the loading toward the end of the sequence, try

* some punctuation (e.g., tilde [~]), esp. w/option key (e.g., bullet)

Also note that System Folder items load first, then Extensions items, then
Control Panels items, so moving the item will change the order accordingly;
e.g., moving an extension from the Extensions Folder to the System Folder
will make it load earlier; moving it to Control Panels will make it load
later.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Subject: Help - Quadra-700 boots only with System 7.1 Tools disk!

(A copy of this message has also been posted to the following newsgroups:
comp.sys.mac.system, comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc)

We have a Quadra-700 (20 MB RAM) which currently only boots with the
System 7.1 Tools disk. It will not boot from the Apple NetInstall disk or
the System 7.5 CD. We have also tried a general system 7.1 installation,
System 7.1 for the Quadra only, the original System 7.5, and 7.5 with
updates 1 or 2 - no success.

The problems started after installing System 7.5 Update 2 on top of 7.5
(everything according to the ReadMe's - other Quadra updates were
successful!). The Mac froze during the first startup. After this, it was
no longer possible to boot from the Apple NetInstall disk or the 7.5 CD
anymore. (Note that I am not claiming that the update was the cause! I am
only trying to establish the chain of envents)

I have tried the following remedies without success:

0. check HD with First Aid and Norton - no problems found.

1. zap the PRAM with command-option-P-R (TechTool gives and error)
clean reinstall of 7.5 -> freeze
2. after PRAM zapping, install various flavors of 7.1 -> freeze
3. disconnect SCSI devices, repeat 1 and 2 -> freeze
4. successful boot from System 7.1 Tools disk, copy of Tools disk
System Folder onto the Hard disk, works too. The "About This Macintosh"
box correctly identifies the System as a Quadra-700
5. Install, e.g., network software on top of this system -> freeze again.
6. disconnect battery on motherboard for about 5 minutes
freeze booting from 7.5 CD, install 7.5 or 7.1 -> freeze
7. initialize internal hard disk (all data are on tape - hurray!)
try installation of 7.1 and 7.5 again -> same freeze
8. take out motherboard, clean SIMM sockets and contacts
try booting from 7.5 CD as well as installation of 7.1 and 7.5 -> freeze

Under System 7.1 the freeze occurs shortly after the "Welcome to
Macintosh" screen appears, under 7.5, the progress bar on this screen
moves about 1/10
of it's length before the Mac dies.

I have run out of ideas how to revive the system. Any suggestions? Did I
disconnect the PRAM Battery long enough (5 min)? Isn't this starting to
look like a hardware problem?

Thank you in advance for any useful advice!

I have been having a bizarre problem with our PaintJet XL300 lately. We have
been trying to produce a series of colour overheads on this printer, which is
not the zippiest of printers, but does the job. Due to the graphics involved,
we have found that it is best to disable background printing and send the
documents to the printer directly. If we do this from our secretary's Power
PC 7100, it take about 10 minutes per slide (and we have a lot of slides and
need multiple copies). Unfortunately this ties up her computer and she can't
get any of her other work done. We can't print in background mode; it will
crash.

To allow her to use her computer, I set up a dedicated Powerbook 540c (that
has the same amount of memory) directly connected to the HP XL300. When I try
to print the slides it take forever (well, this is probably exagerating;
after 1 hour it had sent 3% of one slide to the printer).

I am using the same (and latest) drivers on each computer. I would expect the
540c to be slower, but not this much. Has anyone experienced this type of
problem and/or does anyone have any suggestions?

I just did the recommended install over my original 7.5.2--no clean

updating some obscure extension with the custom install. It's easier to go
back and add new stuff later than try to ferret out the one outdated
extension that's causing grief.

With 7.5.2 the PowerWave was unbelievably twitchy. It seemed to me that if
I didn't hold my mouth right when clicking I'd get a crash. With 7.5.3,
it's much more stable. I've seen this same result on a 9500.

I had problems with RAMDoubler 1.6.1 and Retrospect after the change. I
threw away RAMDoubler and turned on Apple's VM. Retrospect works fine now.

I was running MacTCP when I made the switch. I can apparently switch back

FreePPP 1.05 works perfectly. The only programs I've found not to work are
the VersaTerm Time Client (VersaTerm itself works fine!), an older MacX and
MacWeather.

I use Eudora Pro (Heavy?). The latest version works perfectly. In fact,
that's what I'm typing this into. I know several other people who use the
newest "Lite" version with no problems.

>6) Just what advantages does Open Transport really offer?

My ftp transfer rates over ethernet to a DEC Alpha in the same domain went
>From 100K/sec to 225K/sec after the upgrade. I'd like to attribute this to
OT. I haven't noticed any differences with a modem, but they'd be far less
startling and therefore less noticable.

Subject: Mac SE and USR 28.8K modem

I recently replaced my aging 2400 bps modem with a USR Sportster
28.8K faxmodem. When I connect to AOL at 28.8K bps I am frequently
disconnected when AOL is downloading artwork or I manually download
a file. I never had this problem with my old modem and I don't have
the problem if I use the Sportster at 14.4K bps.

Can a Mac SE keep up with a 28.8K bps modem? If it can, is my problem
likely to be caused by a faulty modem, noisy phone line or problem
with modems on the AOL side.

Also, I almost forgot to provide some possibly useful information.
When I configure the AOL software to connect at 28.8K bps it rarely
connects at that rate. Rather it usually connects at a lower rate,
usually something like 26900 bps.

I don't know what is causeing this, but I have a solution. After
quitting Netscape, run Mac OS Purge 1.01 to clean up the memory. It
works for me. ( I leave an alias on the desktop). It can be found about
anywhere that Mac Utilities are found and it's freeware. It's only an 8k
application and uses 40k to run and self quits. Neat.

Good Luck.

want something that can morph between 2 pictures where I supply some of the

Is any of this making sense??

OCE-Schlumberger 5232 Inksheet

I have a SERIOUS PROBLEM with our color printer, which I hope some
of you can help with!

The printer is produced bye OCE Graphics and uses a seperate
postscript unit with HD, the postscript units product name is
Schlumberger 5232. It can print in A3 and uses 4-colour
thermal transfer ink sheets.

My problem is that the french producent of the inksheets
has stopped the production of inksheets!!! - this makes my printer
(original price in 1990 about 30.000$....) useless, unless I

1. find another producent which produces identical inksheets
2. find another printercompany which uses approx. simillar inksheets
and hope that I can adapt them to my printer.
3. find a way to produce them myself

The colorsequence of the inksheets is yellow, magenta, cyan and
black

Width is approx. 264 mm

If you have any information/solutions about this problem

A recent message from the moderator said that the reason no messages in
foreign languages were accepted was because the monoglot moderator wasn't
prepared to pass them on without having any idea what they meant.

There's an obvious fix for that: extend the moderator pool to include
people who can read more than one language.

I can read French and Turkish well enough to know if a message is on-topic
for the digest. Volunteers for other languages? There should be no problem
with Italian, given the level of activity of the Italian Mac community.

Software for non-English languages is announced every week. It's just plain
nuts to insist that it has to be described in English.

[This sounds good to me. I could maintain a short list of people who would
review other language posts, send the email whenever I got it. The
reviewer's would glance at the message and attach a small english
summary/translation and return it to me. This would force a 24 hour delay
on those messages, but they would make it. What do you all think? I would
like to see the english summaries added because a) many people who have the
answers know only english; so the poster is bound to get a bigger response
and b) so I can keep track of what discussions are going on in the digest.

This is a well-documented bug. The workaround is to install MacsBug

I'm using a NEC XE 15 and I definitely recommend any Mac user to STAY
AWAY from this model (and from NEC monitors in general). The particular
monitor I'm using now (new, not refurbished) has been sent to me
directly from NEC, where supposedly it was verified by their
technicians. And all I can say is that image quality is bad, the price
is appaling, and the customer support is dismal.

The battery may not be bad; you may just need to reset the Power Manager.
There is a way to do that by removing your battery, unplugging your
computer, and pressing the small reset button on the back of the Duo for at
least 15-30 seconds (see your computer owner's manual (GASP! :-) for
details). There's also some software to do the same thing; it's probably
available here on Info-Mac, or in any case from

Jeremy Kezer's PowerBook Page (http://users.aol.com/jbkezer/index.html) is
an excellent resource for PowerBook battery questions; he's written some
battery software you will probably want to check out.

What system version are you running? If you are running 7.5 or later,
check to see if you have any enablers floating around in your System,
Extensions, or Control Panels folders; if so, remove them. Also remove any
patches (Duo Battery Patch, icon is a Band-Aid=AE).

If you're running 7.1 or lower, ensure you have the latest version of the
Duo enabler and if I recall correctly, you'll need the Duo Battery Patch to
fix the power manager.

Don't despair; I couldn't help a friend whose PB 150 refused to start from
battery OR shore power; I tried everything I knew. Finally, one day, it
just up and started, and has been running fine ever since.

Hope this helps. Cheers,

Subject: Q: Printer Output problem

Greetings!

I have a strange problem, which has vexed me for some time, but now, I
have to take action.

I use an LC630 with 12Meg, system 7.5.3 (however, the problem occurred
also before), an Apple Laserwriter NT, and ClarisWorks or Publish-It-
Easy. All I want to do is to produce a simple flyer.

My printing usually is just fine, out of any program, including Netscape,
etc. ClarisWorks, as long as it is text or painting mode, also does fine.

However, the moment I use it in drawing mode - again, a simple lay-out,
nothing fancy - the printer blinks for hours, literally.

I have re-installed the driver software, I have re-installed ClarisWorks,
no avail.

What should I be looking for?
Which is the most likely component to give me all this grief?
Would appreciate some pointers.

System: 7.5.3
Software: Netscape 2.0, Photoshop 3, MSWord 5.1a, Excel 4.0, MiacPlot 4 Pro,
QuickMail, Open Transport

Irritating Problem: When I switch on virtual memory, setting total memory to
26M, the virtual memory file on my hard drive becomes 26M, instead of just the
needed 2M. I have called Apple Tech Support; they recommended a clean system
install. Which I have done. The problem persists.

Although the hugely generous VM file problem predates my installation of 7.5.3
Update 2.0, I suspect it did begin to occur at about the same time of my 16M
RAM upgrade in January, from 8M to 24M.

I have also reinstalled the Memory control panel, tossed the Finder and Memory
preferences files, done the PRAM and desktop rebuild through Techtools 1.08,
and generally futzed and fine-tuned, washed, cleaned, lubed and changed the
automatic transmission fluid filter.

It's not a critical problem; it's just that with "only" 250M on the hard
drive, it would be nice to have that 24M back for file space! Has anyone else
out there had this problem, or know of a fix.

TIA,
Jim
