Subject: [*] About This Particular Macintosh 2.01
About This Particular Macintosh (ATPM) is a well-written, fun, quirky
electronic magazine about the *personal* computing experience, the
Macintosh experience. It comes out monthly, as close to the 15th as we
can manage, in DOCMaker stand-alone format. We owe ATPM's existence to
those everyday Mac users who share with us their stories, anecdotes,
letters, pictures and reviews, which we are only too happy to publish.
After all, this magazine is about *your* particular macintosh.

Subject: [*] FileIndexer 1.4
FileIndexer indexes the full text of collections of documents on your
disks. By using Claris XTND the program can read any document you have
translators for. Indexing takes some time, and can run in the background
without much impact. Finding the list of files that contain the word or
words you are looking for is fast.
This version, 1.4, is an update to the previous posted versions that
built the index in memory. This one uses a disk-based index and can index
very large amounts of text without a memory penalty.
To index a heirarchy of folders, simply drag the top folder into
FileIndexer's main window.
The program is free and is written with the insanely great MacApp 3.3 C++
application framework.

Subject: [*] find-infomac.cgi in shar format
Find-infomac package is a perl-based cgi script that does "find file" on i
nfo-mac. Since this cgi requires only a copy of all-files.txt, virtually an
yone with a unix-based httpd access can put this cgi. I deliberately did so
to reduce the traffic to each search engine.
I encourage as many as possible to presesent, maintain, and enhance this c
gi as possible. The best way to go is to let all public info-mac mirrors wi
th httpd access has a cgi like this (doesn't have to be mine at all as long
as it does what mine does).

Subject: [*] InfoBrowser 3.5.1
Freeware HC Stack -- Works with HC 2.0
New: Allows you to import and read TidBits Digests and extract URLs.
Bug Fix: Fixed a bug in the script to read in Info-Mac Digests.
In an attempt to make the chore of reading the Info-Mac and TidBits Digests
easier and less time consuming I created this stack.
It allows you to take text files of the Info-Mac Digest and TidBits and
display, quickly travel through the subject headings, extract files to
download, extract URLs, and save messages and other useful information.
You Must First download or transfer the Digests to your local hard disk in
order for this to work. Also the files need to contain the mail header (at
least some of it) or formatting will not work. I extract files from Eudora
1.5.4 (select all the parts of a particular issue and execute "Save As"
then name, and UNCHECK "Guess Paragraphs" and CHECK "Include Headers").
This is not designed as a replacement for EasyView (which is a fantastic
application) rather EasyView does some wonderful things but I do not like
how it handles clip files. Also, I use this HC stack with Batch FTP 2.0.
The files that infoBrowser generate work well with BatchFTP, tht is why I
use InfoBrowser over EasyView.
Fixed:
*Since 3.0 fixed a few small bugs the would not allow you to jump to
Subjects in info-mac that were duplicated, and changed the ICON.
* Added the ability to import and read TidBits Files and extract URLs.
May be included in Info-Mac CDROMs by Pacific Hi-Tech.

Subject: [*] Menu Bar Pattern 1.3
I was trying to find a copy of Menu Bar Pattern and it took me 3 days to
find it so I am putting this copy on Info-Mac for the good of the mac
community.
By now, there are several programs available that put nice designsor even
pictures on the desktops. People call it eye candy. But why stop at the
desktop? You have always been able to put at least a simple pattern on the
desktop, but have always had just a plain menu bar at the top of the
screen.
Not anymore. With this control panel, you can set the menu bar's background
to any pattern you wish.
Menu Bar Pattern simply puts a pattern on the menu bar
It also has a transparensy feature for those with that lets the
texture/picture shine through.
Requirements: System 6 and color quickdraw and the ability to display 16
colors/greys.
Menu Bar Pattern was written by Steve Stockman ([email protected])
Note that I am not the author of this control panel nor do I endorse it in
any way. There is no warrenties impressed or implied so if blows up your
mac don't complain to me.
Feel to E-mail me with any questions/comments. ([email protected])

Subject: [*] QTMIDI-Tester (Testing QuickTime MIDI Instruments)
This is a (small, fast-to-download) MIDI file for testing the instrument
program change accuracy of any software which makes use of QuickTime & the
QuickTime Musical Instruments Extension.
The general MIDI instruments are often assigned the wrong sound in
QuickTime 2.0 & 2.1. Even Apple's SimpleText 1.3 assigns the wrong
instrument sounds!
This file was produced to help programmers be aware of the problem and to
give them an easy way to check that their software is performing properly.
Non-programmers may find this file useful in checking out the accuracy of
software which they are using.

Subject: [*] WASTE Object Handlers 1.2 release
Hello Info-Mac Moderators (and whomever else is reading this)
This is a submission of the WASTE Object Handlers version 1.2 to be
posted in /dev/src/ (as waste-object-handlers-12.hqx). This replaces
any existing copies/versions of the WASTE Object Handlers (i think v1.1
is currently in /dev/src/). It should also go in the appropriate directories
in umich (and any other macgift subscribers), and remove any previous
versions there.
The WASTE Object Handlers are a companion to Marco Piovanelli's WASTE
text engine. They require WASTE to work, and WASTE can be found at:
. This C code library gives
"drop and play" functionality to your WASTE-based projects to allow
you to handle objects such as PICT's, sounds, HFS/file objects in your
WASTE documents. Additionally, this library's handlers extend WASTE's
drag-and-drop functionality to include objects of this kind.
A must for anyone using WASTE.
I am the co-author of the handlers along with the main author, Michael
Kamprath .
For more information about the handlers, please see it's enclosed README
document (it's not THAT big to download)

Yank is a $15 shareware application that does two things:
1) It cleans up your Preferences folder by moving outdated files to the Trash.
2) It uninstalls an application and all files created by the application by

Nothing is deleted -- all files are moved to the Trash.
Open the Trash folder and watch those unneeded files pile up!
Yank is a fat-binary application, which means it runs in native mode on a

There is a Control Panel called StartupLog that does exactly this, it is by
Aurelian Software and Brian Durand, who can be emailed at
[email protected]. Also, there is an application called Detective (sorry no
company or contact) which, if you want to be more paranoid, will also tell
you exactly which programs have been run, when, and for how long, and if
you are even MORE paranoiac (like me!
there is a Control Panel called
Super Save by Michael F. Kamprath ([email protected]) which records EVERY
keystroke typed and saves them in convenient daily files. (Though I must
say, the real purpose of that last one is actually for insurance against
crashes.)
Or maybe you could run all three! (I do!)
Good luck!

Subject: [Q] How to bypass internal HD at startup?
A friend of mine has an SE/30 that can't boot off of it's internal hard
drive. It displays the Happy Mac, chatters for a while but, before it
starts to display and startup icons, it restarts the startup sequence
again.
Additionally, the floppy drive seems to have a problem as well (loud
chattering when it tries to read a floppy disk) which keeps me from being
able to boot off of a floppy disk. The owner's best guess as to the source
of these problems is that he recently moved and thinks it may have been
jostled around quite a bit during the move. It hasn't worked since the
move.
I have an external hard drive with a System folder on it that I'd like to
use to boot the SE/30 but the SE/30 insists on trying to boot off of it's
internal hard drive. I *think* I remember reading somewhere that there was
a key that you could hold down during startup to make a Mac ignore an
internal hard disk for situations like I have. Does anyone know if this is
true and what key it is that I should hold down?

Sheesh, lighten up, Leslie--this is Info-*M*A*C*, already! Although I
don't run Aaron because I don't like how it minimizes Photoshop palettes,
I gotta admit Espy is a whole lot easier on the eyes than that wretched

From: Joseph McLean
Subject: Can one mac do it all?
I've asked these questions of some official apple experts, in case they
don't get back to me I'll ask some actual people as well
I have a client with some very interesting needs. Her consulting company
is producing a high-level report for the Bangladesh government -- she came
to me in despair as the growing amount of data finally overwhelmed her
various 486s... 11 weeks into the 18 week deadline. At first I thought I
could help her by simply upgrading a few components, but it soon became
clear she wants some very extraordinary things to happen in the next two
months.
So I went out on a limb. I told her that all she would need for these
incredible tasks is a PowerMac 7200, loaded to the gills with some of the
world's finest software. Now I have 48 hours to prove myself right.
The report will consist of the cream of over 1000 interviews. What she
wants is something that will analyze these (5-10 page) interviews and flesh
out patterns in the responses. In other words, if 34% of those interviewed
mention "renewed economic growth", this software would find it WITHOUT
someone entering those key words into a word finder. If we have to fish
for every pattern, we'll get nowhere.
Is there a program that will do this? High-level analysis? Money is no
object.
And furthermore...
Does a 7200 have speech recognition? I know it will talk -- will it listen?
And do a damn good job?
What other forms of data-entry would you recommend? She has an awful lot
of print -- in books, to, so paperport is out. Are handscanners good
enough, or Flatbed? Just how good has OCR gotten?
The most important is the data analysis program. If there isn't anything
quite as amazing, I would really appreciate some alternatives. Right now
I'm using BBedit (on my Mac) as a searching utility, which is lovely but
it'll only search for what I tell it...
I also (help!!) need the fabled Word6 translator for ClarisWorks because
every interview is standardized on that monster program. I was going to
show her how my lowly PowerBook 165c could open her MS files in a flash,
but I realized in time that I can't read Word Six! I'm seeing her
tomorrow! Ahhhhhh!
-+-
I can't name names, but they are an internationally respected consulting
firm, and are fully prepared to trash every wintel box for a Macintosh
environment (complete with PowerMacs, Newtons, PowerBooks, and Apple
Mugs!). I know there's a bunch of savvy experts on this list, please, drop
me a line. *Any* info would help, about anything from the PowerMac to the
Hand Scanner to the viability of the whole project. I'm at
.
Thank you.

This is a message is sent to [email protected] some time ago. I have

Hi there!
A friend of mine just bought a Performa 6200 16/800/CD/Modem (MacOS 7.5.1)
with a 1705 Apple Monitor and your QuickCam camera. The computer is
integrated into a LocalTalk network consisting of itself, a Performa 5200
(mentioned below) and a HP DW 660c.
Everything works fine except for the camera. We installed the software and
tried to use the camera, but we got nothing then just a plain white video
window (the controls are displayed properly) or some strange stripes and
patterns. We tried the camera on an also new Performa 5200 8/800/CD/Modem
(same OS) -> same problem. We reinstalled the cameras software, we used
different ports (modem & printer), we tried to disabled almost all
extensions, rebuilt the desktop - the problem persisted. Then we tried the
camera on my PowerMac 8100/80 32/1GB/CD (same OS) - everything worked fine.
Some people at the company where we bought the computers and the camera
told as that we would need the Apple Video System for the Performas for the
camera to work. Another firm told us we don't need the Video System. The
German Connectix hotline told us that there is no know problem with the
QuickCam and the Performa 6200 and adviced us to disable some extensions...
What's the problem? What can we do? What's wrong?
Please help us...
Thank you very much...

>* Frontier is a complete development environment. It includes a debugger,

I dispute the "online documentation" part (nothing else). The only doc
which comes with the freeware release is something culled from a very
hacker-oriented article from MacTech magazine about 3 years ago. There is
a serious lack of true online docs, eg a help window, balloon help, Apple
Guide, "?" icons, explanatory text labels in windows, anything at all
really. There are no samples, no tutorials, no worked examples, no
language reference. I consider myself an _extremely_ proficient Mac
programmer with almost 8 years' experience programming the Mac at all
levels using several methodologies -- including lots of experience with
FaceSpan, HyperCard and CLOS (yes, OO Lisp) and a little with Prograph,
TCL and PowerPlant. I could not get going with Frontier as downloaded. I
haven't deleted it because it sounds like it will be great if I ever get
enough info to get started. Anyone got anything decent I can have a look
at? (Tell me about it please before you send it).

Subject: Mac 7500 and bursty SLIP
Anyone out there have any experience with a 7500/100 running 7.5.3 and
InterSLIP? I saw one recently that was running in a very bursty
manner. SLIP packets would flood in, during which time it was almost
impossible to move a window, switch to the desktop, anything. Finally
it was discovered that if the user waited until the modem lights went
off, one could get to a menu, move a window. But when packets started
flowing through the modem again, the machine froze. Once it froze in
mod-windpw-zoom, another time froze in mid-menu-choice-blink.
Suggestions, speculations as to what might be contending with the
processor for so much time?

Subject: MacOS 7.5.3 and ClarisWorks
Forgive me if this matter has been raised earlier,
but I have not noticed if it has:
ClarisWorks Wordprocesser 4.0 had been working without
a hitch on my PowerWave 604/132 with OS 7.5.2 until I
upgraded to OS 7.5.3 . Now each time that I try to close
or save a ClarisWorks word document (I haven't tried the
other ClarisWorks applications yet) everything freezes up
forcing me to reboot. I cleaned out all ClarisWorks files
(except documents) and re-installed CW from Power Computing
Corporations CD-ROM disk, but that didn't help. Has anyone
else experienced this? I hate to face the task of re-
formatting all my CW documents in a different application.
If anyone has a fix for this bug, I'd appreciate your
suggestions.

Subject: Missing SoundLib - why shared libraries?
Dear Digest Readers,
Sparkle 2.4 FAT seams to want a file called SoundLib.
Where do I get it? Did I lose it from AppleScript 1.1, SoundManager 3.1
or some other source?
This is why I wish we didn't have shared library files. The more
individual modules that make up a program, the greater the likelihood a
system failure will mean that the file gets lost. It is a lot easier to
archive whole applications, than the applications with the corresponding
modules that are needed. (Is anyone at Apple or Microsoft listening?)
Especially if you don't know what modules are necessary for which
programs. If the modules are found in the System folder, that makes it
worse, because you can't see the association between the module and the
program. I believe in putting the whole shebang of every program into
its own folder, and leaving the system folder alone. If you are going
to make something that goes into the system folder, make it like
Disinfectant which has a piece of code that will spawn an extension
>From the application whenever needed.
Please let me know if there is a version that will work with System
7.5.2.
Thank you.

Subject: Sys 7.5.3 Question
Info-Mac-ers,
Alright! I've installed System 7.5.3 on my LC 630. Other than a couple
minor glitches at the outset, I must say it went quite smoothly. Hats
off to Apple for the superlative support. Hats on for the sluggish
availabilty (come on! Downloading 15 mbs of the Interet?).
Two problems:
1) Open Transport is a RAM hog of Guinness proportions. If you are using
8 MB of RAM, forget it; stick with classic AppleTalk.
2) Here's the question I have for you, I guess. I have a Multiscan 15
monitor. Before the upgrade I'd had it set for the 800x600 resolution at
67 (?) hz. It worked out well because I had the real estate of a 17"
monitor, and I could still watch TV because the card accepted that
resolution.
Now, the Monitors cdev says I can only go with 832x624, at 75 hz. Sure,
I get more real estate, but my TV card doesn't work with that
resolution.
How do I get back to my normal (and much appreciated) 800x600?
Thanks in advance,
Aaron Vegh
p.s. post responses personally, please. I will post the winning answer

Subject: Wish for a backup utility to solve big problem
Dear Digest readers,
Finally worked out what would be the ideal backup utility for someone
who has an excessive backup problem. If someone has created it, please
let me know:
A single program that will:
1. Compare the contents of every file on two hard disks.
Scan compact pro, stuffit archives. Automatically decompress
Diskdoubler files, and compare the contents again.
2. Find out which files have duplicates based on the compare files that
were successful.
3. Find out if there is more than one copy per hard disk.
and prompt the user to decide whether to delete the extra copy(ies).
4. Do all this without extensions loaded.
5. is PowerMac native.
6. Requires less than 16MB RAM to scan in all 75,000 files!
As it is, all file searching programs including FileList+ balk at the
idea of scanning in more than 16,000 files into one archive. Perhaps
someone could make it so that it would search iteratively through all
the archives on the disk for similar files as far as size, file creator,
version number etc...
If it would do this without forcing the user to learn scripting, that
would be ideal. Or if someone has figured out a way to do this with
Retrospect 3.0 (which I have) please send me the script (if under 100k),
or let me know how big it is, so I can have you e-mail it to the right
place.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
[email protected] (if such a utility exists later, because of this
idea, please use this address, as I will always have it no matter what
provider I end up having).

By now, there are several programs available that put nice designsor even

Not anymore. With this control panel, you can set the menu bar's background

Menu Bar Pattern simply puts a pattern on the menu bar

Hello Info-Mac Moderators (and whomever else is reading this)
This is a submission of the WASTE Object Handlers version 1.2 to be

any existing copies/versions of the WASTE Object Handlers (i think v1.1

in umich (and any other macgift subscribers), and remove any previous
versions there.
The WASTE Object Handlers are a companion to Marco Piovanelli's WASTE

. This C code library gives
"drop and play" functionality to your WASTE-based projects to allow
you to handle objects such as PICT's, sounds, HFS/file objects in your

drag-and-drop functionality to include objects of this kind.
A must for anyone using WASTE.

Does anyone know if this is
true and what key it is that I should hold down?

pleasant. Furthermore, MacBench says Aaron causes a mere 1% performance
hit on a Power Mac, aside from its slow window painting.
Mac users are well known for their iconoclastic tastes in user
interfaces; besides, if Greg Landweber & Co. can persuade folks to pay
good money for a pretty face, more power to them. And yes, I *did* see
the smiley after your facetious Win95 jibe...

Yes, I can see that. Tough call. My vote would go to trusting posters,
but then I don't have rabid right-wing "representatives" and FBI spooks
and suchlike "protectors of public morals" (hah!) breathing down my neck,
foaming and twitching and straining at the leash to get at my hard

I have

help me:
***************************** original message **************************
Bye

Subject: Language for learning?
>* Frontier is a complete development environment. It includes a debugger,
>online documentation, and a wealth of hundreds of verbs (funtions).

7.5.2.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

any)? Is additional software (driver?) needed? Any info will be much

I've tried to get the Mac shareware program Frequency Meter to run on my

But unfortunately it just isn't working as it should. It registers the sound

refuses to inform me of the frequency. It is more of a Volume Meter at this

except it provides no units [Db etc.]. Has anyone made this program work, or
can
anybody recommend another program? I tried Guitar Tuner, but it doesn't work
either. Hmmm. Dang.

If someone has created it, please
let me know:
