Subject: [*] 3D Folder Icons 1.2

This is an update to 3D Folder Icons 1.1 that adds 4-bit (16 color)
versions of the icons.

These icons are replacements for the default System 7 folder icons. These
are not Copland look-and-feel icons, but are derived from a gray 3D folder
I found several years ago. I liked the look of it, and designed a set of
system folder icons around it.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate POPGate 1.2

The POPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting e-mail message
transfer using the POP Internet protocol (RFC1725) via TCP/IP network.

The POPGate module supports multi-stream communications. For each registered
user, POPGate can retrieve messages from several remote mailboxes and provide
access to CommuniGate user mailboxes for several remote users simultaneously.

Retrieving mail:
Sometimes (usually, when your CommuniGate server is not directly connected to
Internet), mail is stored on some foreign "mail servers". The POP protocol
allows client applications to connect to those "mail servers" and retrieve
mail from mailboxes on those servers.

Each registered CommuniGate user can specify POP accounts he/she has on remote
mail servers, and POPGate will automatically make connections, retrieve new
mail and store mail in user's In Box mailboxes.

When you have many local users, you may consider getting your own domain name.
In this case your network provider can store all messages directed to your
domain in one POP account. POPGate can retrieve mail from such a "unified",
domain-wide account. When specified, that account is polled periodically, and
all messages retrieved from it are delivered to CommuniGate users. Since the
"envelope" information is lost when messages are stored in a unified POP
account, sometimes it is not possible to automatically route a message
retrieved from that account. In this case the message is routed to CommuniGate
Postmaster.

For dial-up linked system, you will use POPGate to retrieve your mail from the
mail server(s), and you will use SMTPGate to send your mail. When a dial-up
(MacPPP) link is used, POPGate initiates dial-up connections only when it is
allowed by the schedule set with the "PPP Dialing" CommuniGate Server
settings.

You may want to enable access to CommuniGate user mailboxes via Internet. Any
E-mail software supporting POP protocol can be used to connect to your
CommuniGate server and to retrieve mail from user mailboxes using POPGate,
i.e. the POPGate module can also work as a POP3 Server.

Updates since last posting:
1.2.
*?Open Transport Compatibility added.
* CommuniGate accounts with spaces in the name can be accesses remotely
now via POPGate, if the spaces are substituted with the underscore symbols.

[email protected]

This is a simple connect 4 game with many options, different board sizes,
various levels of difficultly, a tough computer opponent, nice graphics and
a few other surprises, try it out.

Changes in version 1.1:
There are now both PowerPC and 68K versions
Smooth Animations and Sounds
Fixed a lot of drawing bugs, you no longer see the board being drawn

This program may be freely uploaded to ftp sites, included on shareware
cd-roms, bbs's, and modified for international use (i.e graphics with
different langages, etc.). All I ask is that you send me a letter notifying
me that you plan to alter the program or include it on a cd-rom.

Subject: [*] DisCollect 2.0

DisCollect 2.0 is an easy to use Music cataloging system for Filemaker
Pro 3.

Both Macintosh and Windows Users can use this template.

This database has really cool graphics made with Photoshop with
assorted plugins and fonts.

I have left out templates for songs, sound samples and album art
because I feel you and I both have much better things to do. If you
feel like you need those fields then I suggest you either examine your
life closely or make them yourself.

You can enter Artists, Titles, Year of Release, Label, Format, Genre,
and even the ID# from the barcode.

The database has over 70 pre-entered record labels and many
pre-entered formats and genres.

The List option leads you to a layout with all fields included. If you
want to limit the fields for ListView to Artist, Title and Year just
switch the button setting to the "Short Info" layout.

All print buttons lead to a nice 2 column printout of Artist, Title
and Year. This can also be changed by switching the button settings.

I hope you enjoy this template. It is ShareWare. If You like it
please send $10 U.S. (check or money order...its risky sending cash in
the mail) to the address below and you will receive the full access
Password. Without the password users can only browse and print
records.

Please email me about any problem and we will find a fix asap.

Hey all,

Finally! An nslookup for the mac. I have not yet seen one around and I
got tired of waiting, so I wrote one. So here ya go.

This program can be used to lookup IP addresses, CNAMEs, HINFOs, etc.
with detailed output in the style of the UN*X program: nslookup

Most importantly, is freeware! But beware: it is a beta, so it will
probably crash. Use at your own risk ;-)

Subject: [*] File eXpress 1.0b2

"Finally, a 'File Transport Tool' for the rest of us!"

File eXpress allows you to send any file on your Mac to any other machine
running File eXpress just by "dropping" the item to send on a mailbox icon in
the Finder. File eXpress also creates a single "Inbox" folder on your desktop
where you'll be able to quickly access items sent to you by other File eXpress
users.

This release provides a drag-and-drop interface for document transfer services
over BOTH AppleTalk and TCP/IP networks. Together, the "Beta 2" release of
the fully recordable and scriptable FX*Engine and FX*Packager bring
point-to-point document transfer and compression services to your desktop.

There are no user accounts to create, server applications to manage, nor
folders to "share." Unlike some other AppleTalk or TCP/IP based file sharing
methods where you expose entire folder hierarchies on your Mac to the
inspection of others, with File eXpress's "package shipping model" your files
are only copied when and where you choose.

Specifically, this fully functional beta release of File eXpress:
* Allows you to send files to any Macintosh on the same network running
an
FX*Engine
* Supports the simultaneous delivery of the same files over both
AppleTalk and
TCP/IP networks
* Runs asynchronously so you can continue with your work while File
eXpress
sends, receives and unpacks your packages in the background
* Provides full access to the set of File eXpress services via
AppleScript as
fully Recordable and Scriptable applications
* Supports automatic compression of files or folders before sending them
across the network. This not only minimizes network traffic, but reduces the
storage requirements on the destination machine - perfect for cross-country
network transfers or home-grown backup systems.
* Are "Fat Binaries" that have been accelerated for Apple's Power
Macintoshes
* Provide "deferred delivery" capabilities that allow you to send
packages to
other users regardless of whether their machines are currently available -
File eXpress will keep trying to send your package for three days until the
package is delivered.
Changes since the initial Delta releases include a completely revised user
interface, the addition of the FX*Control Panel to adjust FX*Engine settings,
support for Open Transport 1.1, leaner-meaner compression, and a enhanced
FX*Engine which can now be controlled via AppleScript without launching the
FX*Packager.

Registered users of any of the Delta releases of File eXpress may continue to
use their registration codes. Many thanks for your Support!

File eXpress will run on any Macintosh with a 68020 or better running System
7.1.2 or later. Open Transport support requires System 7.5.3 along with
OpenTransport 1.1 or later.

Font-o-rama! is a font dialog box. It's a drop-in replacement for the
font dialog box or font menus in all the applications you use. With
Font-o-rama! you can see all the fonts on your system at once!

It's better than other font dialog boxes, because it's carefully
designed to be very quick and easy to use. It's better than font menus
for the same reason. If you like using the keyboard, you can quickly
select and set fonts using only the keyboard. If you like the mouse,
you can set any font, size, or style with a single click.

Font-o-rama! is known to work with Aldus PageMaker 5.0 and 6.0, the
scriptable Finder, Microsoft Word 6.0, Scriptable Text Editor, BBEdit
3.5, Microsoft Excel 5, and Quark Express 3.3. It probably works with
your application, too.

Subject: [*] GLMStat 1.6.0

GLMStat is a statistical program for analysing generalised linear models.
It provides a macintosh interface but otherwise operates in a similar
fashion to GLIM but with less features (most of which you probably won't
miss). Features of GLMStat are
- spreadsheet style data entry
- Normal, Poisson, Binomial and Gamma models with appropriate links and
specification of convergence and aliasing parameters
- Scatter and Residual plots
- Output of deviance, parameter estimates, residuals and parameter
correlations
- Saving of data files complete with all model specifications.
- printing of data, graph and results.
- Online Help (under the apple menu) and a brief User Manual.
- includes example data files for most examples in two of the texts.

The programme is shareware with a fee of $AUD30 for individual copies or
$AUD150 or $US110 for site licences. ($1AUD is approximately $US0.73). Further
details in the "Read Me" file.
Unregistered copies are fully functional except that copying of graphs and
results, saving of data and the recording of transcripts are disabled.

- changed Record to Report
- Report can be saved as either Text or RTF format (Warning: there appears
to be a bug in the Clarisworks RTF translator 1.1v3(x22) which came with
the upgrade from 4.0v1 to 4.0v2,3, or 4 - previous versions work fine)
- Add . - add a single term to model
- display CORR in blocks of 6 instead of 8 to allow dispaly on standard
paper width

The only Mac software I'm aware of is an aging, outdated (? ca. 1989?)
compiled BASIC program for creating and loading schedules for a BSR X-10
CP-290 Home Control Interface; it comes with the CP-290.

Incredibly, it still runs on my Duo! I can up/download schedules, reset
the unit's clock, and create new schedules.

I too would like to know of any other Mac/BSR-X10/home control software.

Subject: [A] Copland Question

>1) How will Macintoshes, running Copland on a ROM-less machine, support =
>booting from a floppy with most of its facilities available (i.e. for =

That's why all the machines capable of running COPLAND will most likely be
required to have a CD-ROM or (CD-Writable) drive. It seems natural. As it
is, the new PowerMacs (like the 8500, which is quite nice :) ) has to boot
off of a CD, and I don't believe you can do it off of a floppy disk. It
seems
that the MacOS has become an unwieldy web of extensions, and system enablers.
As it is, system 7.5.3, in it's base configuration, is big. The system file
is 1.5 MB, and the finder is about 512K. I realize that you can cut that
down with a minimum install, but not enough so that the enablers for the
PowerPC chips will fit on it. That was a big complain MacWorld (or maybe
MacUser) had about the 8500. The base configuration has about 80 something
items in the extensions folder. Hint to Apple: clean it up a little.
I'm just waiting for the linux port to the mac.

2) Wouldn't a fully disk-based OS be slower than one with parts of =
itself in a ROM chip? Even though Apple's ROMs were never blazingly =
fast, a ROM chip would seem faster than a hard disk.

Faster, yes, but not as easily upgradable. Still in this instance, I think
speed is not the major factor. With 120 MHz + machines out there, I don't
think the slowdown will be that major.

Subject: [Q] Accessing Ethernet via AppleTalk?

Thanks for the many responses to my question about LocalTalk-connected Macs
accessing the Ethernet via a PowerMac 7100. Several people suggested
running a software router on the 7100 that is connected to both LocalTalk
and EtherNet. As was also pointed out, though, this will exact a
performance hit from the 7100 and means that LocalTalk speeds will limit
the access speed of the other two computers.

After hearing all the suggestions, I have to agree: for me, the best
solution will be to buy an EtherNet card for the Performa 6218CD and not
worry about the SE. (By the way, I know the SE is a museum piece, but it's
nice to have an extra computer in the lab when the newer ones are all in
use).

Thanks again for all the information that would take forever to find on my
own!

>Love to hear solutions for the startup from an external partitioned disk.

>(partitioned) startup disk with 7.5.3? Disk-driver software used? Gert-Jan

I don't run 7.5.3 myself, but this work-around might help :

You mention FWB Hard Disk Toolkit : use it to create multiple,
password-protected automounting partitions. (I'm told you must use 1.8.0
with Sys 7.53)

At bootup, you will be prompted to enter passwords for each partition as
it attempts to auto-mount : dismiss the dialogs by hitting the return key
until you reach the partition you want. Enter its password. (to speed
this process, if you do not require security you can use simple passwords
like 1, 2, 3 etc)
Once the partition has booted, you can mount the others manually if you
need them.

Clean, easy, no control panels, works on a stripped down system, and with
extensions disabled via the shift key. I use this set-up to provide a
"maintaince" boot volume for defragmenting and repairing the other
volumes on the same physical device.

Hope this helps

Subject: Clogged HP Cartridge

Hi everyone,

The title is self explanatory. Occasionally, for a clogged cartridge, I
will use a damped cloth, clean the copper-like tip, plus the ink basket and
the little flap residing inside the Deskwriter. Failed yesterday... Usually
works. The cartridge is halfway through. Is there a way to rescape this one

The fact is I don't print very often. But a few days back I was able to,
though the output let me feel cleaning the cartridge -- instead of priming
it -- was a must.

Any insights appreciated.

I discovered the solution to my EASY VIEW problem.

Problem: I'd been using EASY VIEW to read Info-Mac, TidBITS & similar
on-line publications. EASY VIEW worked fine when I down loaded those
publications directly from AOL or CIS or eWorld or the Internet.

EASY VIEW didn't work when I received those publications via Claris
Emailer 1.0v3.

Solution:

When downloaded directly from AOL or CIS or eWorld or the Internet those
publications arrive at my computer in Mac format. That works in EASY VIEW.

When downloaded via Emailer they arrive in DOS format. That does not work
in EASY VIEW.

If I change them to Mac format (using BBEdit) all is fine with EASY VIEW.

Hope that helps.

My Eudora Pro still has the 32K limit (version 2.1.4 PowerPC).

Macs with PPC 603 CPUs must enable Macintosh Easy Open to use those

Ok, time has now passed since the first versions of this program.
How can I get a copy? I don't see much about this product.
Emulating the ST again will allow some interesting possibilities.
THANKS!!!!

A few week ago, I posted the following on Info-Mac and I did not receive

I hope that someone on the net can help me with displaying multinational
characters on my Mac when connected to a Vax computer by modem. I'm
using White Knight 12.x for the connection. At work, there is no problem
because I have a direct connection and I use NCSA Telnet. However, at
home, I can't get those characters with accents to be displayed on my
screen.

Does anyone out there have any experience with WK 12.x and characters
with accents? I'm particularly interested in displaying French
characters.

Subject: Odd ADB behavior

Well, it still may be an ADB problem even though your keyboard's power
key works. According to the ADB spec I read in an Apple document some
time ago, the power key is wired differently. Supposedly there is a pin
on the ADB connector just for that power switch. Accordingly, it is
certainly possible that you have a bad ADB (on the motherboard?) :(

Wish I had something more encouraging to say.

Subject: Problems with Apple Share 3.6.1

Hi Macsters

I have just read May's edition of the Mac magazine and discovered that
there is a problem with Apple Share version 3.6.1. People running Apple
Share may be at risk of crashes and file corruption. Many people have
experienced major problems with the release of update 2 and one reason
could be that it includes the latest version of Apple Share.

Anyone using Apple Share 3.6.1 is strongly advised by Connectix to download
an extension which is supposed to fix the problem. This is available at
http://www.connectix.com/.

Hi Macsters

A pre-release version of Apple's CyperDog is available on Apple's Web site
at http://cyberdog.apple.com.

Apple intends to incorporate CyperDog software into its Copland OS.
Cyberdog will enable users to browse the internet from within any OpenDoc
application and drag and drop web links.

Subject: Serial ports on mac Performa 630 DOS Compatible Machine

Can anyone help me please? I need to control equipment from my Mac 630 DOS
machine, whilst in the PC mode (in Windows). This needs to be via a true
RS232 serial port which includes the RTS, CTS, DTR handshake lines.
Unfortunately the Mac serial port (even in the DOS mode) does not have such
as the RTS line and so the external equipment does not work.

Does anyone know how to add a true serial port to the 486 DX card built
into the Mac and not use the built in Mac ports which do not have all of
the handshake lines?

Thanks, Max

Subject: Sys 7.5.3 and Word 6.x

You don't specify which version of Word 6 (6.0 or 6.0.1) that you are
running but you might find the following information of note. While 7.5.3
fixed a lot of Microsoft problems their are still some problems with Word
and Other Office apps.

>From New In This Update - 3

>** If you use Microsoft Office 4.2.1, you need the extension "Office 4.2x
>Update For Power Mac," version 1.0.1, and the Microsoft Office Manager

>Internet. Download the MC1164.HQX and MOMPATCH.HQX "patch" (update) files

>ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles

This has also been suggested in the Word for Macintosh FAQ v0.3 by Indranil
Mookherjee ([email protected]) and Celeste Dolan Mookherjee

These patches are old enough that they only apply to the first generation
Pmacs like th 6100. While specifically for Office they may be of benefit
to other Office apps installed singlely.

On a positive note, I have a 7200 and have to say the word has never been
as stable or as sweet since the update. 7.5.3 fixed all my problems with
word and made it approximately 50-30% faster as well.

Subject: System 7.5.3 and Word 6.x

There are two updates to Microsoft Office that you need if you have a
Power Mac. One is an extension called "Office4.2x Update for Power
Mac". It is supposed to prevent certain lockups and Type 11 errors on ALL
Power Macs. It's current version is 1.0.1, and it is available at:

http://www.microsoft.com/kb/softlib/mslfiles/mc1164.hqx

Be sure that you are using version 1.0.1 because version 1.0 is NOT compatible
with System 7.5.3 and will cause hangs.

Secondly, if you're using a new PCI Power Mac, you need to patch the
control panel "Microsoft Office Manager" (or delete it all together).
The patch can be found at:

http://www.microsoft.com/kb/softlib/msl ... mpatch.hqx

Of course, the wiser approach IMHO is to use Word 5.1a, which is much faster,
can read Word 6 documents, and is not susceptible to the Word macro virus.

Save the uuencoded portion of the message to a file with a name that ends
in ".uu", then drop it on Stuffit Expander.

The "uuencoded portion" begins with something like:

begin 644 bbedit_badge1.gif
M1TE&.#=AA@ V ,0 /___[6]YU)9M80 $-;.SN?GY^_O]P *528];6Y\:4
..

..
1L8I7S.(6N_C%,(ZQ+T( #L!

end

So, the foo.uu file you create should have nothing preceding "begin" and
nothing following "end".

Before you spend your hardearned money, take a look at

Located in the info-mac archives under
dev/info/ifsplm or dev/info/internet-mac-prog-lang

I believe the latest version is 7.5 :)

I am suffering from a strange problem with my Trackpad. (On a Powerbook
540, running system B1-7.1.1)

When I single click, especially in a scroll bar, the Mac behaves as if it
has received two clicks. This is very irritating, as it means that
instead of getting the next screenful of text to look at, I get the
next-but-one.

At first I assumed that it was a problem with the Trackpad switch -
perhaps a defunct debouncing capacitor. However, I've just downloaded
Clickpad II, which allows me to click by tapping the pad and I still get
the same problem - a single tap is interpreted as two clicks!

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution??

Many thanks for your help
