It's been known for months that version 5.1.2 of the cd-rom software
conflicts withe DOS compatibility software; it's even in Apple's own Tech
Info Library (TIL) notes. It's also come up dozens of times on the
comp.sys.mac.* groups. The only thing that's new is that this version of
cd-rom software is loaded with 7.5.3's Easy Install, which was probably a
bad idea for Macs with a DOS card (warnings about this were also posted
to the Net, btw).

DOS card users should definitely take a close look at the relevant
articles in the TIL; if you search for "DOS Compatibility" you should get
most of them:

The message is encoded in MIME. If your email package doesn't handle
MIME attachments transparently (it should) download the messages as text
to your Mac and use Chris Newman's Macintosh port of Mpack 1.5
to decode them.

Subject: [A] How fast is a Performa 6300?

How fast is fast ? A 6300 is slower than a 7500 but it performs reasonably
*if* you can upgrade to native mode software *and* you use Speed Doubler.

What I have found disappointing is that the previous line of Performas (the
630, for example) were just as fast or faster using 68xxx based software,
for me the 6200 and 6300 aren't real improvements but at least you can
boast that you have a Power PC on your desktop. Big deal.

As for Soft Windows, it works, but for me it is r-e-a-l s-l-o-w. The
Windows benchmark software I ran rated it as a 6MHz 80486 (interesting as
Intel never made a 386 chip that slow, but that's technological progress
for you). Maybe I haven't set up my machine in an optimal fashion. However,
the Compaq 486 that I also use (80486SX at 33 MHz) flies by comparison.

If the price for a replacement motherboard for a Quadra 650 had been lower,
I would have repaired my old machine and would not have bought a Performa.
As it is, for the price I would have paid for the repair, I have gained a
CD-ROM and roughly equivalent performance so I'm not unhappy.

Hey Apple, when do we get the Pentium Pro killer for $2000 ????

I've never been a fan of Macintosh Easy Open (cumbersome and awkward, IMHO); I
prefered instead to hack the fmap id=17010 resource in Finder. But I've had to
use it lately, and I find it crankier than ever. For instance, when I
double-click a stuffed archive it gives me a choice of StuffIt Expander and

Could anyone give me a few tips on how to hack Easy Open to produce better
results?

On five different occasions (from 2 different Macs and one Gateway PC)
I ran Netscape. I had the browser access www.microsoft.com. Whenever I
tried to access *any* option on the pagee, Netscape crashed. I found this
rather amusing because at the lower left-hand corner of the Microsoft
Home Page, there's a little blurb: "Having trouble with your browser.
Download Microsofts's free browser." In addition, I couldn't help
thinking of the NYT article a while back in which it was alleged that
the installation of Windows 95 sabotaged existing network software.
Hmmm. Perhaps this is a new attempt at sabotage.

Install Finder Secrets Enabler. It will give you command-delete deleting

Two choices: Either view your files in small icon view or icon view, then
you will see all the names clearly. If this is not an option (i.e. you want
size info as well, etc.) then try a shareware extension that allows you to
modify the view parameters.

My setup with MS Word 5.1a and GV fax software is working fine.
First check whether the fax shortcut is working in other textediting/
wordprocessing software. If it is, trash the word preferences file and
retry. If it isn't, you can check whether you accidentally suspended a fax,
reinstall your GV software, turn background printing off and retry.

Subject: How to Stop Netscape's BLINK

After encountering that much-despised BLINK tag on one web page too many, I=
finally spent a little effort to permanently disable it in my copy of=
Netscape. Here's how to do it, using ResEdit:

Save an original unmodified copy of Netscape somewhere, in case of emergency=
.

Use ResEdit to edit a copy of Netscape.

Open the DATA resource, ID=3D0.

Search for the ascii strings "blink" and "BLINK", and change them to=
something else that is unlikely to occur as an HTML tag; I changed them to=
"blunk" and "BLUNK". (Different versions of Netscape may have it in upper=
and/or lowercase, and may have one or more occurances.)

Save the changes and quit.

Now when you use the modified version of Netscape, it won't recognize the=
tags and will simply ignore them.

I also found that I could disable Java the same way. (I haven't yet tried=
getting the new version which supposedly has a "disable Java" option.) =
However, I can't be entirely sure that my mods will completely disable=
_all_ Java scripts -- maybe there are other important Java-related tags or=
strings that I don't know about. In any case, what I did was to change all=
occurances of the following strings in the DATA ID=3D0 resource:
"JavaScript" to "LavaScript"
"SCRIPT" to "SCRYPT"
"onload" to "anload"

My new 850C on a 6100/60AV with 8M (+ Ram Doubler) seems to cause more hangs
than I was getting before. Background printing can also be extremely slow
(especially with color of course) so much so that I wasn't sure it was doing

Except for simple jobs I now always print in the foreground...something to

I wonder if maybe more RAM would make this thing work better.

Print quality is mostly consistently good although not 100% of the time.

If you have already made your map, then you need to ask your ISP. The cgi

If you are making your map, then use WebMap, available on Info-Mac.

In my Macintosh LC630 I've MATHEMATICA 2.0 (kernel + front-end, separated
BUT IN THE SAME MACHINE) and MACPPP 2.2.0. The problem is the following:

1. when I launch mathematica double-clicking on the front-end, this
operation launch also MacPPP: so if the modem is off, MATHEMATICA can't be
opened.

2.Ok, I can quit MACPPP as soon as it's launched by the MATHEMATICA front
end: but after doing that I've seen that MACPPP is launched a second time
by the MATHEMATICA kernel!

So, if I want to work with Mathematica, I must stop MACPPP two-times-two,
and it's annoying! :-)

The strange thing is that I've not such trouble if I make a network
connection before using mathematica: i.e. if I check my mail with eudora
and then I PUT THE MODEM OFF and I QUIT MACPPP, I can start mathematica
without any of the problems mentioned above!!

Great Thanks to Everybody will help me in resolution of this problem

Subject: OpenTransport 1.1 & ISDN--Annoying AppleTalk Alerts

(Sorry if this doesn't seem appropriate for this newsgroup.)

This will be of interest to anyone using ISDN and OpenTransport 1.1 who is
getting the following two alerts from AppleTalk:

"Access to your AppleTalk network has been interrupted. When the network
becomes available again, a message on your screen will notify you."

"Your AppleTalk network is now available."

This is a new "feature" of OpenTransport. Here is what Apple has to say
on this issue:

-----------------------
"The messages which you are getting are typical when access to an internet
becomes available/lost. Given that the remote site has implemented an internet
router, it's the loss/connection to the router that is causing the messages
that you're seeing. The same messages would occur if you were to use the
latest release of the "classic" AppleTalk, on a system which could support it.
This is considered a feature of both Open Transport AppleTalk and of Classic
AppleTalk. I can well understand why this would be an irritant for you,
unfortunately, I'm not aware of a way to disable this feature other than
leaving the connection active. I will propose a suggestion to the
AppleTalk team for them to implement a mechanism by which these alerts can
be turned off.

... [communications deleted] ...

Regarding this matter, I would really like to provide you with a simple answer,
but that's not within my powers at this point. I can well understand that the
use of ISDN is only going to increase and that for me, you are the first to
raise this important issue. [...names deleted to protect the guilty...]

I can understand that this is an Apple issue, however, until your EMail, I've
never seen this alert as having been a problem. Open Transport 1.1 has been
available for active development use since September. For all of the
developers whom I've supported, you are the first to raise this issue.

The alert which is affecting you was purposely implemented to warn users of
changes to their network status. This occurs whenever the Router Table
Maintenance Protocol (RTMP) stub listener times out. This is a standard part
of the AppleTalk protocol. We have received user complaints that there should
be a warning mechanism to alert users to changes in network status, and so this
feature, which is affecting you, was implemented."
-----------------------

Apple is apparently trying to determine if this bothers enough people to
warrant a fix before the next release of OpenTransport, and if so, how
long they can put it off.

I get more than a dozen alerts an hour, and it's really making it hard to
use my machine. I have a PCI Mac 7500, so I have no choice but to use
OpenTransport. If this problem is affecting you, I'm sure Richard Ford,
the Product Manager for Open Transport, would love to hear from you. He
can be reached at [email protected].

Also, please send me a message if you are affected by this. I am
compiling a list of people who are experiencing this problem. If you send
me your email address, I will notify you as soon as there is a fix for
this.

You want to look at Greg's Browser. Aside from its other fine qualities
as a general file manager, when the StuffIt Engine is installed (it comes
with DropStuff) you can not only peek inside of StuffIt archives, but
extract one or more files by simply dragging them out to another
location. It helps me to reduce clutter by stashing all of my disabled
extensions, e.g., in one .sit archive, and dragging one out if I
occasionally need it.

The only place that I've heard about a Stuffit Browser is in ads
for Stuffit Deluxe 4.0. It's supposed to have True Finder Integration
(TIF) where you can just double click on Stuffit archives and the they
will "open" like folders so you can see what's inside them. So far the
only place I've seen Stuffit Deluxe 4.0advertised is in MacMall (Volume
60s) and MacWAREHOUSE (Volume 53). I just sent Aladdin a note asking if
this is indeed coming out soon. I've seen it advertised in one of the
mail order catalogs before only to find out it was a mistake.

I'll let you know what I hear back from Aladdin. BTW, the
upgrade from Stuffit Deluze 3.5 is supposed to be $39.95.

I have an external SCSI drive that is partitioned into 6 volumes.
The product is a LaCie Tsunami 1080 megabyte model with Silverlining 5.6.3
as the installed driver. Under System 7.5, I could copy a System folder to
any volume on that external drive, set the startup disk control panel to
the volume containing the copied System, restart, and everything worked
just fine. Opening the startup disk control panel, I would find that only
the boot volume was highlighted as the startup volume.
Under system 7.5.3, this procedure still works, but after a
restart, I open the startup disk control panel and find that ALL of the
volumes on the external drive are highlighted as startup disks. It would
seem that System 7.5.3's startup disk panel considers an entire physical
device as the boot device instead of localizing the startup to one specific
volume on that device - for non-Apple devices only.
When I upgraded to System 7.5.3, I also used the new Drive Setup
program (version 1.0.4) that comes with System 7.5 update 2 to reformat and
partition the internal IDE hard drive and to set up two volumes on it. The
new IDE driver was added at this time also. Startup Disk control panel
consistently highlights the specific volume (of the two exiting volumes) on
the internal hard drive as the boot drive. The system can be restarted
without problems, even though the startup disk control panel shows all 6
volumes of the external hard drive selected as the startup disk.
This could be a minor bug in the Silverlining 5.6.3 driver or in
the interaction between System 7.5.3 and Silverlining 5.6.3. It might also
be a minor bug in the new Startup Disk control panel - which bears a
version number of 7.5.2 and is identified as coming from System 7.5 update
2.
I have saved the PRAM information files that Techtool 1.0.9
creates, one for each startup disk choice. The PRAM contents differ
considerably, depending on the chosen startup volume, but I have no clue
about just what the contents mean.
Has anyone else seen this particular situation? Is it causing any
problems with anyone's system?
For everyone's information, moving up to System 7.5.3 has cured
many problems on a friend's 6100 PPC system. He reports that Deck 2.5, a
special digital audio recording and production package, now boots and runs
without problems.
Thanks for all the help in the past. I hope that my situation is a
random one, caused by some obscure installation irregularity and not a
widespread occurance.
Please try the new Color control panel. Having text highlighted by
a background color change is a real pleasure. Watching a flash of color as
one 'clicks' a toolbar button of Netscape Navigator is a nice touch also.
The window color outline feature is 'interesting' but nowhere near as much
of an improvement.
Now if it is possible to have the Infomac digest emailed direct,
please add the method of subscribing to the digest instruction section. I
lost an email (and lots of other things) telling how to do this. The
information file for the digest is dated 1990 and only mentions
distribution to bbs services.
Many thanks.

Subject: TrueType font embedding in Acrobat

Does anyone have any experience of embedding TrueType fonts (*as* TrueType)
in Acrobat files using PDF Writer (version 2.0, part of the 2.1 release of
Acrobat Pro)?

I am creating an online book and am finding that I can't embed the standard
text font, Monotype Plantin ESQ ("Enhanced Screen Quality"). All the other
Plantin fonts - Bold Italic, Expert, whatever - embed correctly, but not
the basic text font. I'm getting the same problem with the freeware Zed
math symbol font. It happens in FrameMaker, Word 5.1 and Nisus, so I don't
think it's the application's fault.

Thanks in advance for any info or advice,
Graeme Forbes

If it's Apple's card, you can't run NT with the currently available set
of drivers. Likewise OS/2 and Linux. No way to do it; don't waste your
time trying. I don't know about the Reply cards.
