Subject: (Q) Mac LC microphone on a LC475

I recently upgraded my cpu from a old Mac LC to a Mac LC 475. I retained
the original screen, keyboard, mouse and microphone. The snag I have is
that the LC microphone does not appear to work with the LC 475. I have
checked that the LC 475 works with an ordinary mic which it does, although
the audio level seems low.

Is there a way to make the old Mac LC mic work with the LC 475 or is there
an alternative solution that gives as much gain and is as pleasing on the
eye?

Subject: (Q) Segmented long messages with Eudora Lite

I recently started to receive a number of digest type mails using Eudora
Lite. Previously I used MS-Mail (the shame of it) and the digest arrived as
a single mail message. With Eudora Lite, they appear to get segmented by
Eudora, which is an inconvenience. Is it possible to diable this
segmentation?

Also is it possible to turn off the Progress dialog in Eudora 1.5.3 in the
same way as it could be disabled (through the Switches dialog) in Eudora
1.4.3, if so how?

Subject: 7.5.2 update - IDE Drive support

Friends,
Apple has included a very useful new version of Drive Setup in the
7.5.2 update. This version of Drive Setup must be selected manually via a
custom install. It is in the Applications folder, along with a new version
of Disk First Aid and several other very useful programs.
Drive Setup 1.0.4 now supports initialization of internal IDE hard
drives on Mac models that use this technology. High level initialization
works just fine.
In order to use the drive testing feature and install the new
driver for IDE devices, you must choose to initialize - and this wipes out
your directory structure. Back up completely to a reliable storage device
first. Installing the new IDE driver is 'highly recommended'.
For those brave souls who want to experience low level drive
formatting, a very long process that scans all sectors on all tracks for
marginal areas and marks them unusable, Drive Setup 1.0.4 will do this
also. Look for the reinitialization options entry on one of the menus. Be
advised that this process can take several hours on larger IDE drives.
Drive Setup's partitioning feature works, but it does not allow
renaming of the new partitions during the process. Do this after the new
partitions have been set up and you have exited Drive Setup.
The testing feature scans for bad sectors quickly. On a 300
megabyte drive, the process may take only 15 minutes. Because no bad
sectors were found on my drive, I can't comment on the actions taken by
Drive Setup when it finds such areas.

Subject: 7.5.2 Update Comments

Friends,
The 7.5.2 update can install a new copy of MacTCP 2.0.6 on some
systems. It did this on my Performa 635. Please save all of your ip
settings before running this package.
The update adds major improvements to MacOS performance and seems
to be stable, although I have experienced problems with changing the
Startup Drive choice. Selecting a volume on an external SCSI drive caused
my system to reboot twice, finally loading from the selected volume, and
show ALL volumes on the external SCSI drive as selcted for bootup.
Selecting one of two volumes on the internal IDE hard drive and rebooting
worked fine, but I have not tried booting from the external SCSI drive
again.
There are a number of new control panels, extensions, and
applications in the 7.5.2 update that will not install automatically on
specific systems. Please read all of the documents added by the update.
Try a custom install after the easy install is done and take time to
examine all of the available new software. There are some very useful new
components and tools in this updating, including a new Disk First Aid and a
new Drive Setup.
I was one of the lucky individuals who downloaded the update files
>From Netscape's ftp server. All of those files arrived with strange or
missing Type and Creator information. File Buddy handled rebranding of
type and creator. Stuffit Expander was then able to expand those files
into diskette images. This was 'an interesting experience'.
Although the informational files included in the update are a step
in the right direction, it still puzzles me that some information is
omitted. I would expect an update to contain a list of all components,
identified by version number and creation date, with specific comments on
replacement of older versions of the same components. Automated 'easy
installs' are fine if each and every installation is guaranteed to be
flawless and error free - but we live in the real world, where things can
and do regularly happen that 'should never happen'.

Disc-to-Disk, from Optical Media International (OMI) . Fairly simple, does exactly what you're asking
for (save as Mac 'snd ') as well as AIFF, Windows WAV, QuickTime movie,
etc.

BTW, an idea for the actual performances/rehearsals: access the sound
files from a RAM disk rather than a hard disk for speedier playback
response to your double-click -- could be crucial! The CPU can start
feeding the sound data to the synth chips much faster if it's already in
RAM, so you and the audience don't end up waiting for the sound to come
as the seconds tick by...

Subject: [C] First impressions on 7.5.3

Greetings, fellow netters...

I'm one of the lucky few who have managed to connect to one of Apple's ftp
sites and download the latest system update, and I just wanted to post a
few impressions and a question or two.

Installation was uneventful on my PB 5300. As always, I used Disk First Aid
to check both my internal and external drives, and took the time to install
a fresh system folder using the 7.5.2 disk images, before installing the
update to 7.5.3. It takes a while to reinstall and reconfigure all the
extra extensions, control panels, fonts, keyboards, sounds and what-not
that I regularly use, but over the years I've found that installing on top
of the current system is problem-prone. Besides, it gives me a chance to do
some long-needed overall cleanup.

First impressions:

- an increase in speed; not a dramatic one, but still noticeable.
- the system seems more stable; I haven't had a single system crash since
the update.

(The PB still hangs if I run Eudora 2.1.4 from my settings file if
RamDoubler 1.6.1 is active, but that happened before and, technically, is
not a system crash. BTW, the temporary fix that I know of for this problem
is to start Eudora itself and, only then, open the settings file)

- the Finder does a faster job at copying files.

Problems/Questions:

- I couldn't get Open Transport to work with MacSLIP. This isn't a big deal
for me, though, because Apple made it easy to fall back to using MacTCP so,
for now, that's what I've settled with.

- translucent dragging doesn't seem to work; when I drag an icon, I still
get only its outline.

Well, that's it for now. If anybody has other comments, impressions or
tips, I'd love to read them.
Take care.

Subject: [Q] Mounting Mac volume over TCP/IP?

Hi,

I have been trying unsuccessfully to find a way to mount a Mac volume
(mine) over the internet (although it is within the same domain). I was
under the impression that this could be done with something such as
IP/Remote. However, IPR comes with no documentation. I did find something
about ARNS servers, but discovered this was for UNIX volumes.

So my question is... How can I mount a Mac volume (actually, two) from
another Mac over a TCP-IP network?

Please reply by e-mail and I'll summarize...

Thanks,

Something went through my hard drive late Saturday/early Sunday and wiped
out pretty much everything that wasn't running at the time. (The data
wasn't actually overwritten, though.) The applications that were 'busy'
are still there as well as a couple subsidiary files like my Normal

Could this have been a virus? A recent virus-checker found nothing. Has
anybody else had this problem?

The problem I am having is that my hierarchical menus
are not consistently appearing.

I have six aliases to forders in Apple Menu Items.

Two of them expand correctly, four of them don't.

I can't see any reason why.

I noticed that when I changed the names of the aliases, that
this effected which ones did and did not work.

I have tried numerous things to try to fix (reboot, remove all items
and replace one by one, run disk doctor).

Anyone have any ideas, other than going out and buying Now Utilities?

Thanks.

Subject: Apple Really Blew It This Time

You know, Apple shoulda been better prepared for the release of System 7.5
Update 2.0. Netscape maintains TWENTY ftp servers to satisfy the demand
for people wanting to download Navigator 2.0. Apple is still a much larger
company than Netscape, yet only four of their servers carry the system
update. Not that Apple has a shortage of server machines-- they made most
of the computers in their domain (Apple _is_, after all, a personal
computer manufacturer). Apple's just underestimated product demand
_again_. The same thinking that made PCI Power Macs a rarity at first now
clogs ftp.support.apple.com.

Certainly, Apple could have uploaded the update to the seeming half a
milion domains it has. always.apple.com, Apple's new feel-good web site
could have chipped in, as well as solutions.apple.com, home for Apple
Internet Servers. They could have even blown off the cobwebs from
ftp.apple.com, an old Mac IIci with A/UX and uploaded it there.

Then, Apple could have done the unthinkable-- They could have posted the
update to Info-Mac. Even if it were deleted after a week to reclaim the
20+ megabytes of disk space, in that time, it would have been available at
more than 30 sites, including bandwidth behemoths like mirror.apple.com
(_another_ Apple site?), mirrors.aol.com and the WWW HyperArchive.

Apple blew it big time-- Why haven't they learned by now that their new
products are going to cultivate a strangling demand?

[Actually, they aren't as out of as it as you might think. They did contact
us about distributing the update. Two things went wrong, however. First
was that there wasn't enough lead time. Second was that every single mirror
would have been required to sign a legal document. That second bit is just
not possible with the way info-mac is structured. Also, one might imagine that
some mirror admins wouldn't want to carry the update: their servers would
have taken an awful pounding. With enough lead time we could have worked
around these problems. We are now working with Apple so that both info-mac
and umich, and other archive sites might carry things like the update in the
future. -Gordon]

the internal disk acts somehow like a temp buffer --, but refuses to do its

Subject: Deleting files by single keypress and Finder not showing full
filenames

Hello Mac'ers,

Though I am not a Mac addict (I feel perfectly at ease with "IBM compatibles"
and DOS/Windows), I certainly appreciate MacOS' GUI, but I have a couple of
questions about the Finder:

1) Wouldn't it be much easier to be able to DELETE any file by simply pressing
a key? (eg ). Does anybody know of an extension, init, patch, add-on,
that can achieve this? (of course, leaving me the chance of backstepping in
case I press accidentally...)

2) I HATE not being able to see the complete name of files unless I press
-I. Since files can have names up to 32 characters (or 31?), why
isn't the finder showing me the *whole* name? I firmly WANT that! Again,
anybody out there has anything at hand to force the Finder into showing
file names in full?

Thanks to all for any suggestion.

Subject: Don't force quit Netscape 2.0.1

Dear Digest readers,
It appears Netscape 2.0.1 has a feature that is probably unwanted.
If you force quit (command-option-escape simultaneously) it due to
impatience, the next time it is reloaded,
the preferences file gets corrupted. As a result, you won't be able
to use that installation of Netscape 2.0.1 anymore. You have to
start fresh from Netscape 1.12, and setting up the preferences there,
then move up to Netscape 2.0, and finally Netscape 2.0.1 to make sure
that each installation the preferences stays OK. This is only if you
upgraded from 2.0 in the first place. So don't force quit it, or you
will be in for the adventure I had this past weekend.

This can be a real problem for people whose connections aren't always
crystal clear, and having Type 11 errors with their service providers.
I believe 2.0.1 is really just a beta, and not a real release due to
this serious feature/bug. I have avoided those type 11 errors for a
while now with Netscape, but if I had one, I'd better make sure I have
the original preferences file backed up from before the crash.

It is either the force quit that did it, or my changing the default
color values. What eventually happened was I had to "Accept" the
license agreement over and over again every time I reloaded Netscape
2.0.1, even though I saved the Options preferences.

So if you can afford it, don't upgrade from 2.0, until at least 2.0.2
gets released. Let's hope by that point Netscape doesn't have the
bug of the lost preference file from color changes or force quits.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,

I am having very frustrating problem using a PPP connection with
TCP/IP on a PPC based system. I am using FreePPP with OpenTransport

I had another program hang. After I rebooted, it would not work any
more. I get a failure to open port, or something like that from
Netscape and an error message from Fetch saying that the serial line
is in use. I have run Norton DiskDoctor, removed multiple
preferences folders etc without results. BTW FreePPP will call and
connect to my internet server.

As a sideline, I am using NowUtilites 3.0.1 and I am very
dissappointed in it. When running its conflict catching, it turns of
INITS that have been marked as required and flips grouped INTS to
conflicting INITS and vice versa.

the names of other systems within the domain, if I use the IP address.

If I try to use aliases or names of system in my domain, it can't find
them. Also, if I use IP addresses or names of systems outside
my domain it can't find them.

I've set up debug on the DNS server and can see the request come in

Subject: Menus hanging

Hi,

I've had a problem for a couple of months now on my system, as follows:

When I choose an item out of a menu in any application, about 1 in 5 times
it starts to blink slowly, but on the second blink or before, either the
application will quit unexpectedly or the computer will hang outright.

I have a Duo 210 12/500 with Duo Dock (250HD). I have a system folder on
each drive (Duo and Dock). This problem had only been occurring on the
PowerBook (Not docked) under 7.5.1, but after installing the 7.5.3 update,
it has happened a couple of times when I'm docked as well.

Has anyone else run across this problem and isolated the conflicting
extensions? (This is almost definitely an extension conflict). I am running
Now Utilities, and this may be a part of the problem, although they've
worked for me in the past.

Other observations: The problem happens most when the item being chosen is
in a submenu. Another, probably related, problem is that sometimes all
submenus disappear. Also, the frequency of the problem is much greater on
my PowerBook and the computer is more likely to hang completely (as opposed
to just the application) when I'm not docked.

them, I call Fujitsu, and they say they will not be available for 6 months,
and I call Sony, and they haven't heard of them. Are they available in the
UK??? I will be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks, if anyone knows of a
dealer where I can get hold of one please let me know.

Why advertise them in the UK if they are non existent! As an aside, the
service provided by Apple seems to be declining. My new PB5300 is prone to
crashes, despite Apples latest software! Is it just me?

Hi All,

Recently I have discovered a corrupted font on my Mac, it is MT Extra. For
the life of me I cannot remember which app this belongs to. I would greatly
appreciate any help anyone can give. Also, just what is it that corrupts
these guys anyhow?

Thank you to all who responded with such wonderful information and help, it
was very much appreciated. It turns out that MS Word 5.1 was the app I was
looking for and all is well and fixed now. As for what corrupts the font,
thank you to those that responded also, I am still smiling from some
responses, you know who you are, and I thank you for easing me through the
problem.

Take care,

Subject: Performa won't boot - another battery problem

Dear Michael Cook:

I read your note about your Perfoma475.

>>I have a Performa 475 running System 7.1P3. On Saturday, everything
>>seemed fine, and the Performa was working. It had been working great
>>until then. On Sunday, it wouldn't boot.

>>When the Performa is turned on, the chimes sound out clearly, and the
>>hard-drive starts clicking as usual. However, it stops a few seconds
>>later. There is no happy, sad, or any other Mac face on the screen.
>>Just a blank screen. I also couldn't boot with a floppy.

>>I've recently read about dead Performa batteries causing various
>>troubles. Could this be one of them? If so, what kind of battery
>>does it need, and where are good places to try to find a replacement?
>>Our Performa is 2.25+ years old.

Actually I also have a Perfoma475 runing greatly which is 2 years old,
but had the same problem. Fortunately, I fit it by changing the clock
battery which I bought at BestBuy. Have you try to chang the clock
battery? I found there is a another way to boot your Perfoma475 by
starting, turning down and restarting the computer within couple seconds
but I am not sure you will damage your files in the hard drive or not(I
try this way, it was OK). But anyhow, I do not suggest you to do this
way!

Usually the clock battery should be last7 years, but I don't think your
and my Perfoma475 being 7 years' old! The clock battery is from Hitarch
in my Perfoma475.

Good luck!

Subject: PRAM and a Slow, Sloooow 637CD!!

This is a little report on a problem I recently encountered which I offer
in hopes that if any of you should ever run into a similar problem it may
be of some help.

I was helping a friend update some of the software on his machine, a
Performa 637CD. Among other things, I installed Aaron 1.2 for him. But
Aaron's twisting, squiggly ZoomRects opened up in slow - and I mean *ultra*
slow - motion, like it felt that it was going to take all day to get some
of those windows open! Everything else felt and looked slow as well.

Later, I installed some utilities, TechTool and TattleTale, to probe around
a bit inside the machine. Lo and behold! TattleTale reported his machine
had a MC68040 CPU running at 6 MHz, rather than the nominal 33 MHz! Out of
curiosity, I then ran some benchmark/system comparisons and found that the
machine was Performa-ing at a level barely above that of an SE or a Plus.
It was even slower than IIci-level machines!

With the help of trusty TechTool (which clears all PRAM addresses, unlike
the keyboard command) I zapped his PRAM - *without* restoring the old PRAM
settings so the machine could restore the default settings from the stock
configuration map in ROM. And now - tah dah! - TattleTale reported that
his CPU was running at 33 MHz, Aaron's squigglies opened up on schedule
(today, not tomorrow) and everything in general (including the benchmarks)
ran at a level one would expect from this machine.

OK, now we know what the problem was. But the question we're stuck with is
- How did it get that way? That will probably remain something of a
mystery, although we can say that the data stored in PRAM is subject to
update by the system software, the Finder, application software, etc. and
if that update is interrupted for any reason, it can become corrupted.
We've probably all seen that at some time or other, although this is
certainly the first time _I've_ seen the system clock speed changed by
corrupted data in PRAM. Never even imagined that it could happen.

>>>Does anyone know where i can order system update 2.0 online or by phone
besides Apple? Preferably in Canada? As far as i can tell, the apple ftp
servers will be tied up for a few days and i'd rather have a disc instead
anyways.>>>Customers who do not have access to an online service or the
Internet can order the update on CD-ROM or floppies in the U.S. for a $13
shipping and handling fee. The number to call in the United States to
order the update is 1-800-293-6617, ext. 984. The number to call in
Canada to order the update is 1-800-361-6075. Localized versions of the
system update will be available to international customers in many
countries by the end of the second quarter of 1996.

Subject: System 7.5.3 & SAM

I recently updated my system to 7.5.3 using the system updater. When I
restarted my system SAM intercept Indicated a problem with virus
definitions. The bdialogue box indicated that the definitions wre not
in the system folder or invalid. I've downloaded and installed the
latest definitions and reinstalled SAM. However, it still doesn't run.
SAM intercept will not load and if I try to use SAM I will be informed
that the virus definitions are invalid.

Could anyone inform me of the nature of this problem and any possible
solutions.

Until I can work this out, I am using Disinfectant. it isn't causing
any problems.

Thanks.

Subject: System 7.5.3 (C)

Gang, I was really looking forward to System 7.5.3 as the great unifier.
Gee golly gosh. No more having three Norton disks for our 7200's, our
7100, and everything else (mixed bag of Q650, IIci, IIcx). Not quite.

I did the "universal" install today. It was depressing. I didn't get a
system that'd work on any Mac. I got a System file and an enabler that
worked with Macs that could handle 7.5.1 and another enabler that worked
with Macs that need 7.5.2 and a whole bunch of other useless stuff that
pretty much took over the free space on my HD.

This is really the dumbest thing Apple has done since enablers. And Apple
has done some pretty dumb things since then.

Want a thrill? System 7.5.3 with wonderful new Open Transport 1.1 will
still not run Eudora Light (1.5.4). Nor will it run LaserBridge. And if
you wipe OT's internet stuff, you cannot install MacTCP. Seems there is
an invisible file with that name in Control Panels. A document. With no
owner to speak of. Same game with Network. I had to go into my handy
dandy old Central Point "FileEdit" to see and wipe those two files. How
many of y'all can do that?

After flushing the "MacTCP" document from Control Panels, I could install
the real MacTCP CP and get Eudora working again. I suspect I'll have the
same luck with the "Network" document and get LaserBridge working again
after installing NSI 1.5.1 (Easy install first, then custom install the
bridge).

What I really wanted from this exercise was a System Tools floppy that
would boot any Mac I "own." Who ruddy cares what boots a particular Mac
>From its internal HD? Not a prayer, children. I haven't seen the 7.5.3
CD-ROM yet, but I don't expect anything more useful than what I've seen
so far.

I really used to like Apple.

What is Apple doing to us?

They announce a system update and tell us that we can download it from
various servers. However, they fail to tell us that these servers are
always too busy to establish a connection!!

How is one suppose to download from a site that is unreachable day or night?

Why don't they allow other servers to carry the system update?

I'm starting to understand why they have financial problems!

solved the problem and prevented a needless trip to my authorized apple

Info-Mac'ers,

An Apple technician told me today that "lot's of people" are using Win

this true? Can anyone confirm this? The last time I asked an Apple tech
about this (2 or 3 short months ago) I got a vague "we're thinking about

Many Thanks,
