Subject: [*] 1984 StartupScreen - From Apple's 1984 commercial

The 1984 StartupScreen is a a still clip taken from Apple's 1984 commercial,
which announced the very first Macintosh. The frame shown is a woman running
down a corridor carrying a sledgehammer, while being chased by some men
dressed in riot gear.

Unless you've seen the 1984 commercial, this startupscreen will probably not
appeal to you, since seeing the woman with the sledgehammer is pretty
symbolic.

The startupscreen is available in two formats, both found in this archive:

1. A StartupScreen file that you can drop into your System Folder,
2. And a ResEdit resource file that you can install into your System 7.5
Update file.

Installation with ResEdit lets you keep the startup progress bar, in case
you're wondering why anyone would rather use ResEdit to install the
startupscreen instead of using the simpler Startupscreen approach.
Instructions are given, by the way, on how to install with ResEdit.

This file is free, but is probably subject to copyright laws, since it is
taken from Apple's commercial.

Subject: [*] Airport IDs 1.2

Version 1.2 increases the database to over 2500 records and adds the
ability to search All Records, Domestic only, or International only.
Other miscellaneous changes have also been made as outlined in the Read Me
file.

Airport IDs is a neat little utility that allows you to search for
Airport locations by name or three-letter ID. It returns all records that
match your criteria (truncates list if over 32K characters). Registered
users can export/import the database to make modifications as they desire.

Thank you to users who have previously registered Airport IDs; you do not
need to register this new version. The registration cost is only $5 (free
for FedEx employees) so please register if you decide to keep this
program (a PC version is also in the works).

"The Bilestoad" is a strategic arcade game featuring hand-to-hand combat.
The original version was published in 1982 for the Apple II computer,
where it was quite popular. This is a pre-release demo of a completely
modernized and updated version for the Macintosh computer, by the
original author.

This version of The Bilestoad requires the following:

o A 256 color display.
o Enough free RAM to run a 4.5Meg application.
o System 7.

For additional information, see:
http://www.continuumsi.com/~marc/bilestoad.html
or send email to [email protected]

Changes from version 0.9c include:
o Fat binary.
o HTML format manual (read with Netscape or Microsloth Internet Explorer).
o Hidden menubar and cursor unless cursor is in menubar.
o View always centers around human in one-player game.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] Cyclone II 1.0.2; shoot-em-up space game

High Risk Ventures, Inc., creators of PegLeg (recently inducted into
Macworld Magazine's Hall of Fame as the Best Shoot-em-up for 1995), is
proud to announce the latest addition to their Digitally Remastered
Classics (tm) series. Cyclone II is the long-awaited sequel to the first
game in this popular series.

Cyclone started with the classic video game Star Castle, and updated it for
the 90's, adding new weapons, shields, bonus points and challenge levels, as
well as state-of-the-art color graphics and sound. In Cyclone, an evil
enemy base sits in the middle of the screen, surrounded by three rotating
shield rings. The rings are segmented, and the individual segments can be
destroyed, allowing weapons to pass through to or from the enemy base when
holes in the three rings line up. The base also protects itself with a
never-ending supply of you-seeking guided mines. Your task is to use your
trusty FireHawk 6000 spaceship to blast through the enemy's defenses and
blow the base to smithereens.

Cyclone has received excellent reviews (four out of five mousesticks from
Inside Mac Games) and has gained widespread popularity. Cyclone II adds a
bunch of cool new stuff to the original. More powerups to aid your noble
quest for destruction. A new bonus level to challenge your skills and
savvy. Three difficulty levels (Boring, Fun and Frustrating) to make your
life easier or more exciting. Full color background starfield pictures to
soothe the senses. Four channels of digital sound. Power Macintosh native
code. And a volume control that goes to eleven, giving you that extra edge
when you need it most.

Cyclone II requires a Macintosh system capable of displaying 256 colors.
It runs well on any 68K Mac, from the original Mac II to the latest Performa,
and is accelerated for Power Macintosh. Cyclone II is a commercial-quality
product, offered as $14.95 shareware.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] Emailer Sound Replacer v3 (Stereo, 16 & 8-bit)

The "Email Sound Replacer v3" is a utility that automatically replaces
your boring stock sounds that play when your electronic messages have
been retrieved. Version 3 contains a very futuristic style sound that
has a dark, steamy, echoing chamber of bass and hollow echos as a
robotic, somewhat neutral gender voice says "You have new electronic
messages." The sound is of highest quality and is in stereo, making it
sound great on any system.

The Email Sound Replacer v3 is available for both Claris Emailer v1.0v3
and Eudora. Each version is available in both 8 and 16-bit stereo and
can be downloaded here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at
http://www.edmondsun.com/clix/ .

The replacer works by allowing you to drop your emailer on top of it.
The replacer then replaces the sound resources automatically. You need
no extra software. For best results, apply the relacement with
extensions off. Further instructions are included with the file.

Subject: [*] Fonts Manager 1.5.9

Fonts Manager(tm) is functionally similar to the System 7.5.x Extensions
Manager. It allows the importing, viewing, enabling, and disabling of font
suitcases in 'Sets' and supports Balloon help. Unlike other utilities, such
as Suitcase(tm) and Master Juggler(tm), it works on ALL Macs with System 7.5
or later, without interfering with the normal operation of your computer.
Have over 500 testimonials from customers with PCI-based PowerMacs running
System 7.5.2 that have switched to Fonts Manager to get their businesses back
'Up & Running'. Also, have over 400 from users of older Macs, who just can't
stand to use Suitcase any longer, and have instead switched to Fonts Manager.

NEW: ATM fonts now recognized properly (and left alone).

Supports the following options: a Help menu, Balloon Help throughout, IMPORT
fonts from folders/disks other than the Fonts folder, Export 'Sets' feature
for update to newer version, automatic installation, set replacement,
alphabetical font lists, Preferences menu for broad customization including
adding an alias of the Fonts folder to the Apple Menu, adjustable color
settings in most windows, indefinite registration period, international MacOS
support (US, Bulgarian, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian,
Kanji, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and
Turkish in this version), and multiple licensing options.

Subject: [*] FreeTP v1.0.0 submission

It allows two Macintosh users to exchange files via the Internet (or any
other TCP connection) without any extra conversions or encoding in one
simple step.

It is designed to allow normal users to transfer files to one another
easily by saying without using an external FTP server or e-mail
attachments, providing both users are running FreeTP (in the wishes to have
direct modem-like file transfers for the Internet...save on your phone
bills).

It is small (approx 100k), easy to use, fast, and PowerMac native. The
installer contains both 68k and PowerMac native versions and will install
the correct one.

FreeTP is freeware. Please read the README after installing for more
information and legal disclaimers.

Most people will probably use this application as a general HTML

Subject: [*] MacNanny 1.0

When our children were young, it seemed that we could recall the day,
maybe the hour and minute of each event of their lives. As experienced
parents, my wife and I have found that those events have tended to blur
as each child has grown older. Parenting becomes more complex and even
simple things like going to a movie on Saturday night is a major
production. Have you ever tried to find the phone number of a movie
theater for the baby sitter as you were rushing out of the door?

MacNanny is the family child care information center that tries to make
life easier so parents can enjoy life and have an occasional night to
themselves.

MacNanny will maintain

that important list of babysitters
a record of emergency contacts
a record of each child
a record of pets
a list of your favorite destinations, addresses and phone numbers

Finally, MacNanny will print that important report to put on the
refrigerator for the babysitter.

MacNanny is shareware ($15). This version has limited features until you
register.

Subject: [*] Memory Measure 1.5

Memory Measure is a stack that will test your memory using 13 different tests.
When the testing is done, a rating between 0 and 100 will be given to you,
where
100 is best and 0 is worst. The average is 55 points with an accuracy +/- 5
points.

The tests test your ability to remember codes, patterns, poems, letters and
numbers. In addition, your perceptive mind is tested, you must separate a
set of
symbols from other symbols and remember locations.

12 of the 13 tests are random. This version adds a test and fixes a bug.

Skittles is an action/puzzle game for one or two players! You control
genetically altered Skittles which fall from the sky, trying to keep them
>From stacking up to the top of the screen.

The Skittles engineers have recently been experimenting with new flavors
and colors. One of the more psychopathic scientists decided to alter the
Skittles' formulas through genetic mutation. The first test batch was
produced, and a teeming, jiggly mass of coagulated, living Skittles appeared.
They quickly began to multiply and pile up into large groups. As the
scientists fled screaming from the building, a few clever minds noticed that
the Skittles were highly reactive. When four of the same type of Skittle
touched, they would instantly vaporize.

There's only one hope left for the Skittles plant, its workers, and the
small city that they inhabit. Vaporize the Skittles before they run rampant
and destroy everything in their path! You are the only hope left before they
crush the entire city.

Skittles is a complex action/puzzle game that took over 18 months in
development. Feel free to pass around and enjoy this shareware version!

Subject: [*] Sleeper 2.0.3

Here is another minor revision to Sleeper. Version 2.0.3 fixes
compatibility problems on older monochrome Macintoshes that were not tested
with version 2.0.2. Users with a MacPlus, SE, or SE/30 should upgrade.
Sleeper 2.0.3 should replace any older versions in the archives.

Sleeper is a control panel for desktop Macintoshes and Power Macintoshes
that dims the screen, powers down Energy Star compliant monitors, and spins
down disk drives after periods of inactivity. In addition to working well
on the desktop, Sleeper is well suited for unattended operations. For file
servers, ftp and http hosts, and unattended telephony such as fax and BBS
systems, Sleeper will wake the drives up when they are needed and put them
to sleep when they are idle. Sleeper is easily configurable; it provides
hotkey control for on-demand activation of its sleep features, and separate
delay settings for screen dimming, monitor power down, and disk sleep.

Sleeper will work on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher, including
System 7.5.3, and will spin down both IDE and SCSI hard drives. The screen
saver feature requires a color-capable Macintosh, and Energy Star monitor
support requires an Energy Star compliant Macintosh (any Mac on which
Apple's Energy Saver control panel works) and an Energy Star capable
monitor. Sleeper is both 680x0 and PowerPC compatible. It supports SCSI
Manager 4.3 in native mode on all machines and requires only 25K of memory
when operating.

Sleeper may be included on the Info-Mac and UMich CD-ROMs.

UltraFind treats your Mac or network as an information-rich file and text
searchable database.

Very powerful and flexible, it provides options for finding every conceivable
type of Macintosh file (you can just choose file types from pop-up menus)
and features an extremely fast text search which includes it's own built-in
Thesaurus, allowing you to not only find documents containing words you are
looking for, but also any documents with related words or topics.
Text search results are scored in order of relevance and displayed as
HyperText linked to a built-in Data Reader, which allows you to read
documents found -and copy text out- without opening any application.

Whether you're looking for the latest version of a document, searching
abstracts, articles or email messages, filtering technical papers,
searching for images, artwork, programs or fonts on the network,
UltraFind can locate the exact information you need in seconds and give
you immediate access to it.

You can customise it with powerful repetitive search Routines, perform
single or batch file functions on files found, view files in heirarchical
order, pathway listing, text contents or the normal Finder interface
(you can switch view modes by just pressing your SpaceBar)

It supports AppleScript and Drag&Drop, displays detailed file information,
and if your Mac is on a network, UltraFind will also search PC servers, IBM
mainframes, VMS and UNIX hosts (including Sun sparc stations and Crays),
all from your desktop.

Subject: [*] YA-Base64 version 1.2.0

Yet Another Base64 Decoder version 1.2.0 is a simple droplet designed to
decode MIME Base64 encoded as well as uuencoded files that are dropped upon
it. It assumes that all segments of the original MIME or uuencoded document
have been concatenated into the file being decoded, and that the segments
are in order. It will optionally attempt to recursively decode files until
no further Base64 decoding or uudecoding is possible.

This is intended primarily as a helper application for Yet Another
NewsWatcher. It is not a general purpose MIME document decoder. It is not
even a general purpose Base64 decoder. Neither is it a fast or smart
uudecoder. However, it does handle most usenet Base64 and uuencoded
binaries fairly well, and it can deal with multiple attached files.

It requires, but does not test for, System 7 or later.

Version 1.2.0 adds support for uudecoding files and recursive decoding. It
also solves the problem present in previous versions of ignoring new open
file events when another file is currently being decoded.

Subject: Info-Mac Digest V14 #60

Speaking of other OS's...I always wanted to learn and play in the land
of Amiga, and now there's a functional Amiga emulator (UAE)! Unfortun-
ately, it is not as simple as SoftWindows...

1) Unlike SoftWindows, it doesn't come with the primary system software
built in. Due to lack of licensing agreements, UAE doesn't include the
system ROMs, which the user has to acquire as a ROM.image (this much I
have managed thanks to cooperation between would-be Amiga-emulating Mac
users), or the equivalent of system + finder, called Workbench. The
Workbench file is something real-box Amiga users have to load from disk,
although presumably said disk is probably included in the purchase of
an Amiga, much as system 7 accompanies your purchase of a new Mac. Well,
....OK, 1st hassles first...

2) If I wanted a legal copy of system 7 fresh from Apple, I have no prob-
lem figuring out how to get one. But getting a copy of Workbench from
Commodore-Amiga? They are sort of extinct. Some German company bought the
license but I don't even know who they are; and if you think CompUSA is a
bit slender in its Mac offerings, try asking where you can get a copy of the
Workbench OS for the Amiga??? But let's pretend I have no problems getting
a shinkwrapped and manual-accompanied copy of Workbench X.X...

3) We are able to use SoftWindows gracefully due to the fact that the
SuperDrive can read PC-formatted diskettes. Ain't that nice? Want a new
Windoze program to load into your make-believe C: drive? No problem; the
SuperDrive makes an excellent A: drive. But remember (some of you do) to
the days of the 800K floppy and disk incompatibility? Well, Amigas put
880K on the same size floppy. And, unlike Apple, I don't think they opted
for industry-standard 1.44 MB when they went hi-density. So nothing but an
Amiga can read the Amiga disks upon which Workbench and other software will
come to me, even if I somehow end up on the mailing list of a previously
unknown mail-order company such as AmigaWarehouse. I think I am dependent
on disk-images. I think that means I need the helpful cooperation of Amiga
owners who will let me get them to buy my software with my money and make
disk-images for me. I suspect this will all be easier if they happen also
to be Mac users as well. Anyone on this list fit description above and feel
sufficiently sympathetic?

I am able to connect and communicate with the same server using Lotus Notes

The key to this probably hinges on the fact that the COM ports on the Mac

maximum port speed is also, I believe 19200. I have been told that is

Subject: MenuFonts by Dubl-Click Software

Greetings all Font Collectors,

Those of us who have become addicted to the ease of font management with
MenuFonts by Dubl-Click Software have been concerned about its compatability
with OS 7.5.3 & PCI Macs. I spoke to MenuFonts tech support today & was told
the following:

-- MenuFonts 4.2 & 4.5 *may* conflict with OS 7.5.3 &/or PCI Macs (mixed
reports from users). If you have one of these versions, tech support suggests
you might try it with 7.5.3, but if your Mac crashes, check to see whether
MenuFonts conflicts &, if so, remove it.
-- A MenuFonts update that *will* effectively function with 7.5.3 & PCI Macs
is in the works. There is no firm availablility date, but mid-April seems a
possibility.
-- Whether or not you already have MenuFonts 4.2 or 4.5, don't buy or upgrade
yet. Wait for the new compatible update.
-- When released, the new update will be available for downloading on
Dubl-Click's Web site & the AOL Dubl-Click forum &
can be ordered from the usual Mac cats & directly from Dubl-Click. The
MenuFonts update may be available on Info-Mac.
-- I'll be posting notice of the availability of the new MenuFonts update
when it's online.
-- MenuFonts 4.2 & 4.5 continue to be compatible with OS 7.5 & OS 7.5.1. Both
versions are also compatible with Suitcase.

As many of us do, I have an enormous collection of fonts &, for several
years, have relied on the combined efforts of MenuFonts & Suitcase to
organize & manage them--but especially MenuFonts. With MenuFonts available,
for the time being, only on my faithful Mac IIci, my poor 9500 won't get
quite the workout it has been looking forward to %-( . If my 9500 begins to
feel neglected & goes into a depression, I shall be turning to this list for
the name of a good Mac-shrink ;-) .

Yours in fontmania,
Toby

PageMaker publications are composed of stories which are independent of
each other. Most likely you imported the Word documents separately
instead of appending them all together. (This can be remedied if you
really want.) PageMaker is checking the publication story-by-story, in
the order in which they were placed (not necessarily physical order or
the order in which they are now).

You can instruct PageMaker to check all stories or only the current
story. You can also do partial checks by selecting the text you want to
chack in the story editor and choosing "Selected Text" in the spell
check window.

I tried this and replicated your problem ONLY IF there is no space
before the em dash after the exclamation pont. I can't explain this but
adding a space cures both the getting stuck and the capitalization
problem.

What is it's name I searched and searched in the recent dir etc. but I
can't find it.

cheers!

Are there any "How to use MACs" video tapes in existance? I see a lot
of these for DOS, Windows and Window 95 platforms but none for the
MAC.

Help Please :-)

My email is [email protected]

Thanks!

Subject: What's the Skinny on SoftWin 3/95?

MacWarehouse tossed me a new catalog inviting me to drop another kilobuck
to upgrade SoftWindows 2.0 to SW 3.0, or, better yet, SoftWindows95.

Oddly, I haven't heard a peep about these newborn puppies, not even from
the Apple press releases and Guy Kawasaki's EvangeList :-)

Anyone know (besides the obvious--that they are optimized for the running
of Windoze95) what these packages have to offer that SW-2 doesn't got?
(I have to confess that I use SW 1.0 for 85% of all my necessary slum-
mings into that particular OS-world; it runs acceptably fast even with
RAM Doubler, and way respectably fast if I take the time to turn RD off,
and with really rare exception I haven't needed the 3/486 instruction set
altho' I'm glad I can boot it when needed).

Subject: Wintel Alternative: Mactel?

I once (not long ago) happened to be on a commuter train in a major met-
ropolitan area and happened to end up sharing a seat with a central Apple
system software Code-o-crat who, off the record, mentioned the following
tidbits--

Copland is on-schedule and we're gonna like it, in a nutshell;

If they can get Apple to go along with it, they definitely can and think
they should release Copland for the Pentium. Copland, of course, is
poised on a hardware abstraction layer. He said to me that the notion
that its hardware-independence still leaves it dependent on the PowerPC
is strictly marketing conservatism; it is genuinely hardware-independent
by nature and can be ported to other CPU's much as WindowsNT has been,
and the opinion of the codemongers is that they oughta go head to head
with the much klutzier WindowsNT on all relevant platforms, not just the
PowerPC (CHRP) platform. The worry is that Apple will be worried that if
Copland will run on Pentium / PentiumPro boxes, this will endanger the suc-
cess of the CHRP / PPCP / whatever-its-called platform, although the
PowerPC architecture still is better poised for the future.

On the other end of things, being independent of the PowerPC chip means
that Copland could be ported to the fastest RISC chips available. I am
wondering how many graphics shops would buy a Mac-compatible equipped with
one of those way-fast Alpha chips that have only seen Unix as an OS so far.
Of course, if those folks at Exponential push the
PowerPC-compatible envelope fast and far enough, it may not matter :-)
