Subject: [*] Adam's Eudora Plug-In 1.0.5 (as seen on TV!)
Howdy folks!
Enclosed is my Eudora Plug in (v1.0.5) which adds the following panels to
your Eudora Settings(from the Read-Me):
Color/Desktop: Let's you change some of the colors that Eudora uses and how
much of the Desktop you see.
X-Headers: Let's you add your own X-Headers (it's fun. Trust me!).
Misc. Settings: Changes the Send button text, default text strings and the size
that files are split at.
Stationery/Text: Change the stationery file name and tweak how text appears.
Ports and Protocols: For the real geeks among us, change how long it takes
before Eudora barfs on you, what port you use
or the protocols that you're using.
Attributions: Instead of "? wrote:", make it something snazzy and insert an
extra .
Date/Time: Change how Eudora displays the time and dates for messages
sent/received.
Connections: Tweak some minor settings for your connections.
Disk Space: Some settings for compacting and buffer size.
From: Change how the From: address reads (ie "Real Name " instead of
"user@host (Real Name)")
Logging: Change what is logged and what ain't, as well as the size of your
logging files.
Suppressed Headers: That's right, suppress the headers that bug you! Normally
done with ResEdit, now via Eudora!
If you like it, all I ask is some email telling me that you use it, and if you
don't, then tell me what you don't like and I'll see what I can do!
Thanks,
adam

Subject: [*] Arnold's Midi Player 2.5.1b
*** Arnold's Midi Player 2.5.1b ***
Shareware $10 or a nice postcard if you're a poor student.
A.M.P is an application that plays any MIDI file on the Macintosh itself or
on an external synthesizer. It is very fast because it doesn't need to
parse the whole MIDI file as true sequencers do (but it can also parse any
file very quickly if you want to have more control).
Just drag and drop a MIDI file on its icon or its window and the song is
playing! You can change controllers and programs, build song lists like a
junke-box... Moreover A.M.P. is MIDI Karaoke aware.
A.M.P. needs
- a Mac LC with system 7.0 (or better) and "Macintosh Drag and Drop"
extension (inclued in system 7.5). System 7.5 or better is recommanded.
- QuickTime 2 extensions or Apple MIDI Manager extensions or OMS extensions
or MIDIShare extensions
You can choose between two kinds of MIDI output:
- QuickTime Music (to play with the Mac internal sound circuit)
- Apple MIDI Manager / Opcode Open Music System / MIDIShare (to play on
real external MIDI devices on the Modem/Printer port).
What's new in 2.5.1b ?
- Multi-list Songs window
- Faster file parsing

Subject: [*] AutoBoot 1.4.5
AutoBoot version 1.4.5
Are you running a Web server, BBS, kiosk, file server or any other kind of
server ? Do you use a remote access package (Timbuktu, ARA, ...) or do you
use your Mac for receiving faxes ? Do you depend on your Mac being
available all the time ? Unfortunately, your Mac is not always as reliable
as it should be. Crashes and system freezes can make your life a horror.
Have a look at AutoBoot. AutoBoot is a Control Panel which will restart
your Macintosh after a System Error or a Freeze-Up has occurred. AutoBoot
ensures maximal availability of unattended Macs.
As many users can testify, AutoBoot can be a real life saver. No Mac server
should be without it !
AutoBoot is $20 shareware. Non commercial distribution unlimited.
Version 1.4.5 changes: this version is now compatible with PCI PowerMacs
and System 7.5.2. It is also more reliable on other PowerMacs.

Subject: [*] BugHuntLite 1.1
Welcome to BugHuntLite, the free memory protection library for PowerPC
developers using Metrowerks CodeWarrior.
BugHuntLite:
* validates reads and writes to memory - dropping into the debugger if an
illegal address is accessed;
* requires no source code changes (other then calling the initialisation
function);
* only validates memory operations performed by your program - if you ask the
OS to hose you, it will still oblige;
* is free - memory protection should be a right, not a privilege;
* is wildly incompatible with Virtual Memory (and probably RamDoubler);
* is written by a 'rogue' programmer, with no inside knowledge from
Metrowerks, Apple, etc.
* is only compatible with Metrowerks CW7 & CW8;
* only works with PowerPC code
This fixes a problem in BugHuntLite 0.9 & 1.0
Thanks.

Cryptographer is my first attempt at making a computer program. It's kind
of a goofy little thing. I hope you enjoy it. Cryptographer is completely
and totally free. How 'bout them potatos? The whole thing was created in
AppWare, which is a great environment for us beginners and has a great deal
of promise for anyone interested in programing. I made it because I am a
teacher and I am always trying to come up with projects that get kids to
use their brains. I figured it would be fun to make my own cryptograms and
see if my students could figure them out by looking for patterns.

Subject: [*] Floppy Catalogue 3.0
What is it?
As the name suggests, Floppy Catalogue keeps track of all the
files on floppies, CD's and other media. This is done by creating a
"catalog" document that contains the name, kind, size and modification
date of all the files found on one or more disks. This information is
displayed in a manner (almost) identical to the Finder's list views. This
way you can browse removable media without having to mount it. You can
also search for files using multiple criteria (like the Find File in
system 7.5) and save the search results as text files. In addition, you
can open files and launch applications directly from FloppyCatalog. Works
for Apple Share volumes too!
System Requirements: Floppy Catalogue requires system 7.1 and a 68020 or
better.
RAM 500K minimum and more if you archive big disks . If you want a native
PPC version I'll be glad to e-mail it to you, although it is not much
faster because of the emulated File Manager. My address is [email protected]

Subject: [*] Mac Manager Demo
This file is a Disk Copy 4.2 disk image of the Mac Manager Demo. Requires
System 7 or higher and will run on any Macintosh except a Plus or SE.
Mac Manager Demo is a full working version of Mac Manager Personal Edition
with the exceptions listed below. A complete Demo Manual is provided in
Word 5 format and should be printed for complete information.
* The demo only runs for one hour each day. At the end of the hour, the
demo automatically quits and returns to Finder. Other running applications
are unaffected.
* The demo does not use Mac Manager's disk protection features that
prevent users from booting with another system disk or holding down the
Shift key to bypass extensions.
* Each group is limited to five users and only six groups are allowed.
* The hard disk encryption option is not included.
* Operates under System 7.0 or higher.
* Network management tools (included with all site license versions) are
not included.
About Mac Manager
Mac Manager provides desktop security, a Copland style interface,
accountability, personal folder management with disk quota, e-mail, screen
saver with screen lock, and virus protection all in one package. Users are
limited to launching and using applications, documents, control panels,
and Apple Menu Items made available through customized setups. Users can
be restricted on Open and Save actions to a floppy disk, personal folder,
drop folders, open only folders, and public folders.
Mac Manager's interface totally emulates Finder. Users are provided many
of the features of Copland (System 8) while still running System 6 or
System 7. Users can set custom desktop styles such as 3-D, Hi-Tech, or
Kids, and can perform multiple simultaneous file-copy operations. Mac
Manager is easy to use and simple to set up using guided step-by-step on
screen instructions.

PhoneWatcher is a personal telephone manager for your Macintosh and modem.
With PhoneWatcher, you can track when your phone rings any caller ID
information, and make the computer alert you with sounds and visuals when

In order to use PhoneWatcher, you simply need an external modem. If you
want to use the features available with caller ID, you need a modem capable
of recognizing caller ID. PhoneWatcher has it's own built-in serial port
arbitrators, and is compatible with most other software that wants to use
the serial port (ZTerm, MacSLIP, etc.); PhoneWatcher only listens to the

Subject: [*] PrinterSwitch Release 1.0
PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to
easily select among many different printers when you print documents in
your applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.
PrinterSwitch appears right when you need it; when you select Print or
Page Setup from any program. No need to memorize hot key sequences! It
can also be activated by a convenient Control Strip Module.
PrinterSwitch complements Apple's new Desktop Printers because it allows
you to select different print devices even if your application won't let
you drag & drop documents onto a Desktop Printer.
It knows about LaserWriter 7 and 8 PPD files and makes sure to use the
proper PPD for each printer, eliminating a common source of Postscript
printing errors.
PrinterSwitch is shareware with a 14-day free trial period. Registration
is $14.00 for single user licenses; site and worldwide licenses are
available. Convenient registration via Kagi Shareware - pay with any
currency, credit cards, checks, etc. via mail, fax, or the internet.
Changes in Release 1.0:
* Added PrinterSwitch Control Strip Module.
* Added Register program
* Updated documentation
Version 1.0 supercedes all beta versions.

Subject: [*] Spelling Bee
Spelling Bee is a full color TALKING program designed to be a teaching or
study aide for any child needing help in spelling. It contains 3 modifiable
lists of 20 words each. The computer speaks the words and the child spells
them with the mouse. There are pitch and speed controls for the computers
voice. Positive reinforcement techniques are used to keep a child's
interest and develope confidence in his/her abilities. Lots of child pleasing
sounds keep them entertained as they learn how to spell the words on their
list(s) without even realizing it! Missed words are tracked for review.
I originally wrote this program for my two gradeschool boys. It worked so
well I decided to offer it to others. Believe it or not, it even improved my
youngest boys speech problems as he repeated the words spoken by the
computer.
Just try it and you'll agree it's well worth the $10.00 shareware fee.

Welcome to Starry Night! Starry Night is your ticket to solar
system tourism. Travel in both time and space; get a first
hand experience of the intricate and beautiful clockwork of
the heavens. You can see the stars and planets as they appear
>From your own backyard, from a country on the other side of
the world or from the Moon. You can watch as the Sun sets from
the surface of Mars. Perhaps you would like to take a trip to
Saturn, there, you may glide through its rings as it lumbers
by in its slow methodical orbit. Witness a total eclipse of
the Sun as seen from the Moon. Set time flowing at whatever
pace you wish. The only limit is your curiosity.
Note to users of earlier versions: This version includes Comet
Hyakutake and Comet Hale-Bopp and lets you add your own orbiting
objects to Starry Night's database. It also fixes a number of
bugs and adds a couple of other new features.

1. Unfortunately 8M is not enough for serious work on a PowerMac. IMHO
16M should be considered basic configuration; 24M for real work; 32M
minimum if you are going to do serious work in Photoshop.
2. 8M of RAM is not enough even to load all of Photoshop PPC, much less
for the OS _and_ Photoshop. A lot of stuff has to be swapped back and
forth between RAM and hard disk, hence the slowdown.
3. It's not clear in your post if you have 16M in total (8M RAM + 8M VM)
or 24M in total (8 + 16). If the latter, then this is an additional
cause for slowdown. The amount of VM should equal the amount of RAM, so
you should have 8M + 8M.
4. Apple VM is very poorly implemented (perhaps improvements in 7.5.3?).
Because it's very slow Adobe engineers wrote their own VM scheme for
Photoshop. So you shouldn't really use VM with Photoshop.
Basically, whichever way you turn, there's only one thing to do: get
more RAM (and don't thing about RAM Doubler: it won't help you).

Check out the Declaration of Independence of the United States of
America. You will find that one signature (the first, I believe) is
particularly striking- that of John Hancock. His name has come to be
used as a colloquialism for "signature", as in "put your John Hancock
here".
John Hancock is reported as stating that he would "make his signature
large so that the king could read it without his spectacles."
I can't find an image of it, but you can see a nice early print of the
Declaration at
(part of a Library of Congress exhibit).

JH stands for John Hancock, an American slang term that means signature.
(Like in: Put your John Hancock on this contract).
Particularly odd when you consider that Eudora is an Australian program,
I believe.
(Non-Americans: The reason that this came into the slang lingo is
because when one looks at our Declaration of Independence, one's

Subject: HELP!- Need a folder locking utility
There are several products that will do what you want (protect folders):
Cassady & Greene Access Managed Enviornment (AME), ASD Software FileGuard,
Magna Empower Pro, usrEZ UltraShield and Kent Marsh Folderbolt Pro. Price
range is $100 to $150. They all will allow you to protect folders, files
and more; you can set it up just for yourself or for several people, each
with their own set of security permissions. They're all comparable, but I
particularly like usrEZ and FileGuard (usrEZ has a few extras features like
encryption that FileGuard doesn't have; OTOH FileGuard is very easy to set
up and use). Empower is certainly worth consideration as well; good product
and reputation but I haven't had first hand experience with it. AME has
many features and probably more flexible than the others in setting up
users, providing each user with specific rights to specific folders, files
and so on but the interface is not as "pretty" as some of the others.
I'm not aware of any shareware programs that will do all of the things that
these products do. There is one called Hide Folders that will "hide" your
folder and "reveal" it if you type in the correct password. Personally, I
recommend that you stay away from shareware security programs. The ones
that I've seen do not work reliably; also, security and your work is *much*
too important to rely on a less fully-tested, professionally developed
program. If you find price of a commercial product to be too high, ask the
others who share your Mac to split the cost. It's a small price to pay to
protect your work; after all, how much do you think you would lose if
someone accidently or deliberately trashed all of your work and you did not
have back up?

MT Extra was probably installed by MS Word. It's a font with
mathematical symbols. MT stands for MathType, the program on which the
mathematical (equation) editors in Word and NisusWriter are based (they

Two old, quick questions which are befuddling me:
- can somebody remind me how to replace a Macintosh Portable (ancestor
of the Powerbook, 18 pounder!) lead-acid battery with a gel cell?
(I have searched multiple Web indices and can't find it there, but
am sure it was discussed here and perhaps on comp.sys.mac.portables
ca. 1993 --- believe it involves prying open a dead Apple battery
casing and substituting innards with a motorcycle battery or some such.)
- can somebody advise on current compiler settings for Think C to build
HyperCard XFCN/XCMD code resources? (A correspondent wants to update
my old "FreeText" indexer/browser programs, which were done under
Lightspeed/Think C 4.x or so ... we can provide detailed symptoms
and error msgs on request; seems that some #include header files
or essential Mac libraries have moved around or been removed, but
perhaps there's an obvious switch to set for backward compatibility?)

Subject: Universal system 7.5.3 hint for PCI macs
If you are trying to make a universal system 7.5.3
and you have a Mac which requires 7.5.2, here're
a few tips:
You have to start with system 7.5 (CD or floppies)
(not 7.5.1 or 7.5.2)
However, 7.5.2 macs will not let you get past the first step
of running the installer (you get a message saying that
the installer does not recognize this Mac, because its
a PCI mac, of course) unless you ...
Hold the option key down while launching the installer.
This lets you go crazy with the installer, but be sure to
create your universal system on a different disk (i.e
not your startup disk which has 7.5.2 on it) or else you
are screwed.
Then follow the instructions in the 7.5.3 updater, especially
the part where it says back up everything....

This is what I found out:
Officially you cannot order System Update 2.0 from Apple US if you're in
Canada. You have to order it from Claris Direct (Claris is the
distributor of all Apple software in Canada) at: 1-800-361-6075. The
price is about CDN$ 28 (including taxes and s&h) and theoretically you
should get it in about two weeks (though IMHO a month is more likely).

Thanks,
adam

* validates reads and writes to memory - dropping into the debugger if an
illegal address is accessed;
* requires no source code changes (other then calling the initialisation
function);
* only validates memory operations performed by your program - if you ask the
OS to hose you, it will still oblige;
* is free - memory protection should be a right, not a privilege;
* is wildly incompatible with Virtual Memory (and probably RamDoubler);
* is written by a 'rogue' programmer, with no inside knowledge from
Metrowerks, Apple, etc.
* is only compatible with Metrowerks CW7 & CW8;
* only works with PowerPC code
This fixes a problem in BugHuntLite 0.9 & 1.0
Thanks.

* Added Register program
* Updated documentation
Version 1.0 supercedes all beta versions.

for the Mac beginner or expert. Its a little bit of a download, but it's
completely worth it. Please, if you haven't already, try this magazine. I am
sure you will like it.

>From Webster's dictionary: John Han.cock n [John Hancock; fr. the

MT stands for MathType, the program on which the
mathematical (equation) editors in Word and NisusWriter are based (they
are really re-packaged earlier versions of MathType).

Subject: questions re Mac Portable battery & Think C XFCN compilation

Subject: Upgrading Quadra 800 to 8500
A friend (here in Japan) would like to get a kit to
upgrade a Quadra 800 to a Quadra 8500. He doesn't
want to have to ship everything to the US (he is
quite capable of doing the upgrade himself) and
also wants to avoid the prohibitive cost of
having someone else do it here in Japan.
Any suggestions please?

Does anybody know of any voice recognition software for a 68040
macintosh? I know there is one for PowerPC's but what about 68040? If
there is what comapny makes it and how do I get a hold of that company?

This is what I found out:
Officially you cannot order System Update 2.0 from Apple US if you're in
Canada. You have to order it from Claris Direct (Claris is the
distributor of all Apple software in Canada) at: 1-800-361-6075. The
price is about CDN$ 28 (including taxes and s&h) and theoretically you
should get it in about two weeks (though IMHO a month is more likely).
