Subject: [*] Aaron's BeBox
Aaron's BeBox is another package from Under the Sun designed to turn your
Mac's interface into something resembling that of the BeBox. Installing and
using Aaron's BeBox won't give you a BeBox, of course, but it will enhance
your virtual landscape and give you a "teaser" of what the BeBox does look
like.
How this is achieved is by modifying your copy of "Aaron", the "Coplandizing"
extension written by Greg Landweber and Ed Voas.
When Aaron's BeBox is installed:
1. You'll get spiffy soft-blue folders, compared to the BeBox's beige-yellow
folders.
2. You'll also have disables the spinning Zoom rects Aaron gives you.
3. The WindowShade widget is displayed a bit more correctly.
4. Finally, it does away with embossed title bars.
Aaron's BeBox is a package that contains:
1. A patching application that modifies your copy of Aaron.
2. A ResEdit file with all the fun resources in it. This is included for
folks interested in seeing what the modifications will be before they
actually install Aaron's BeBox. Also, in case something goes wrong with the
patching application, you can use ResEdit to manually install the changes.
3. A Read Me with complete instructions how to use the patching application
as well as the ResEdit file.
Aaron's BeBox is "request-ware". If you have a spare copy of the Inside
Macintosh CD-ROM and you'd like to help a beginning programmer, please let me
know! You can reach me at the address found within this archive (or you can
email me). If you decide to give Aaron's BeBox to a friend or upload it to a
BBS, then please include this Read Me with it. If you are authoring a book
or CD-ROM and would like to include Aaron's BeBox on it, please contact me
and we can work something out. Thanks!

Clut Fade 1.3.1 Example Code
This is a demo of screen fading operations which can be used to make your
games more professional looking. Not only does the clut_fade library let
you fade to and from black, but it also provides routines to fade to and
>From a specific color or a specific clut. It also provides some control
over which monitors are faded. Demo application, library, and source
code are included.
fade_to_black function written by Jonas Englund, modified by Mark Womack
for multiple monitors.
fade_to_clut function written by Macneil Shonle.
Pascal version written by Christian Franz.
Clut Fade 1.0 was posted by Ken Long (AOL: KenLong, Internet:

Release notes for earlier versions are also included in this file.

This software is considered Public Domain. You are free to use it in any
manner you wish. You are free to upload it to your favorite online
service, but you must post it with the accompanying readme and
description files. If you use or appreciate it, please let us know!! We
all love to get email. See the addresses below.
This software is offered 'as is'. The authors are not responsible for any
damages caused by bugs or defects that might be lurking. But if it blows
up your monitor, please let us know. If you find any bugs, problems,
enhancements, please contact us.
What's New?
The only change for this version is the Pascal version written by
Christian Franz. This isn't a C library with pascal headers. This is
the REAL thing. A complete port of the C code into Pascal. So, you
Pascal users should be very happy and thank Christian for doing a great
job! His email address is listed in the ReadMe.
Because of the versions in different languages, the files have been
seperated into two folders. One folder for C and another for Pascal.
Other than that, the C source is the same as version 1.3.

Subject: [*] Cyclone II 1.0.1; shoot-em-up arcade game
Shareware: $14.95
High Risk Ventures, Inc., creators of PegLeg (recently inducted into
Macworld Magazine's Hall of Fame as the Best Shoot-em-up for 1995), is
proud to announce the latest addition to their Digitally Remastered
Classics (tm) series. Cyclone II is the long-awaited sequel to the first
game in this popular series.
Cyclone started with the classic video game Star Castle, and updated it for
the 90's, adding new weapons, shields, bonus points and challenge levels, as
well as state-of-the-art color graphics and sound. In Cyclone, an evil
enemy base sits in the middle of the screen, surrounded by three rotating
shield rings. The rings are segmented, and the individual segments can be
destroyed, allowing weapons to pass through to or from the enemy base when
holes in the three rings line up. The base also protects itself with a
never-ending supply of you-seeking guided mines. Your task is to use your
trusty FireHawk 6000 spaceship to blast through the enemy's defenses and
blow the base to smithereens.
Cyclone has received excellent reviews (four out of five mousesticks from
Inside Mac Games) and has gained widespread popularity. Cyclone II adds a
bunch of cool new stuff to the original. More powerups to aid your noble
quest for destruction. A new bonus level to challenge your skills and
savvy. Three difficulty levels (Boring, Fun and Frustrating) to make your
life easier or more exciting. Full color background starfield pictures to
soothe the senses. Four channels of digital sound. Power Macintosh native
code. And a volume control that goes to eleven, giving you that extra edge
when you need it most.
Cyclone II requires a Macintosh system capable of displaying 256 colors.
It runs well on any 68K Mac, from the original Mac II to the latest Performa,
and is accelerated for Power Macintosh. Cyclone II is a commercial-quality
product, offered as $14.95 shareware.
Enjoy!

Subject: [*] EPStoPICT 1.1
EPStoPICT is a Macintosh application from Art Age Software, the makers of the
award-winning application epsConverter. EPStoPICT can read any portable EPS
or PostScript file and convert it into a Macintosh PICT file, suitable for
editing with a Macintosh drawing application, or for viewing with any
application that supports standard PICT files.
EPStoPICT parses the actual PostScript code in the EPS file and translates it
into PICT data. Although this process takes longer than simply extracting a
PICT preview from the EPS file, there are several advantages to this
approach:
(1) Some EPS files do not have a PICT preview.
(2) Often the PICT preview is not an accurate representation of the EPS
file's true contents. It may be poorly rendered, or black and white only, for
example.
(3) When present, PICT previews are usually stored as low-resolution bitmaps.
This essentially prevents them from being scaled or edited.
EPStoPICT produces a vector PICT representation of the PostScript data, which
allows for better scaling (zooming in and out), and even a limited degree of
editing with several popular drawing applications.
EPStoPICT requires a Macintosh computer with a 68020 or later processor
(including PowerPC) running System 7.0 or later. EPStoPICT supports Balloon
Help and drag and drop operation from the Finder. Once registered, EPStoPICT
is accelerated for Power Macintosh computers.
To install EPStoPICT, simply double-click the EPStoPICT Installer icon, and
follow the on-screen instructions.
Pricing and registration details can be found in the package.

Subject: [*] New release of yorick for Info-Mac
Introduction to Yorick 1.2
-------------------------
Yorick is a tool for analyzing numerical data that is available under
unix as well as on the Macintosh. It has an interpreter that uses
a C-like language and can operate on entire arrays without
any need for do loops over the array indices. Yorick has a file I/O
package with the ability to conveniently read text files with
columns of numbers. The file I/O package reads a wide variety of binary
and text files and can easily be trained to read more, if the formatting
rules for the file are known. Yorick has a 2D graphics package that
includes polylines, contour plots, cell arrays, and filled mesh
plots. The NEW 3D graphics package provides surface plots, slicing
planes, and iso-surfaces.
Gist is a program that displays frames in binary CGM files written by
yorick and other applications (e.g. ATC GKS, IDL). gist is
particularly useful for making PICT files from a CGM file written by
a Unix version of yorick.
There is a mailing list with announcements about yorick, as well as questions
and answers to questions about using yorick. You can subscribe to the

Subject: [*] RandomNumberLib
UltraLibU -- A pseudo-random-number library for Macintosh platforms
This library is a new C/Assembly implementation of the Ultra PRNG developed
by Marsaglia, et al. (see leading reference in source). It is designed
primarily for Macintosh platforms and replaces an earlier (non-PPC)
library, by this author, that is currently available in a number of public
archives.
UltraLibU contains one low-level assembly routine, in a
conditional-compilation block, for MC68020 (and higher) or PowerPC
processors. (Note: Pure C source for this routine is already available in
the usual Internet archives.) The assembly syntax is that of Metrowerks'
CodeWarrior but adaptation to other compilers should be trivial.
The library contains 14 functions returning random numbers in various
formats, from Booleans to Gaussians, as well as ancillary functions to
initialize the PRNG and to save/restore its context (to reproduce a
sequence exactly).
This PRNG is HIGHLY RANDOM, even at the bit level, VERY FAST and has an
extremely long period (> 10^356).

Attached is a new version of RemoteMouse&Keys. This is a control panel
that allows one to use a keyboard and mouse over a network. I am calling
this the official 1.0 release, as it appears solid and has a cohesive set
of features now.
Besides some bug fixes, this adds these features:
- ability to use passwords on a connect;
- ability to shut the control panel and retain the connection;
- ability to shut down the computer (with the keyboard) with a connection
present and, upon reboot, have the connection automatically re-establish
itself (if no password was used, as this does not store passwords);
Have fun!

Subject: [Q] locking files on a sever
Hi,
I have tried to help my dad with a couple of problems but run out of ideas.
Does anyone know if you can config. a Mac server used by an office of
Architects
so that:
- when they open a file it will only save where it it was opened from.
- they can not move job files by acident i.e. drop them into the wrong folder.
- they have to o.k. re-naming files
They keep lossing files due to accedental mouse clicks and key presses when
things are left on the keyboard.
One idea I had was is possible to lock or put a warning on all files so that
when moving or saving files they have to o.k. an are you sure dialogue box.
I have tried locking files at sys. level but that does not allow you to save
the
file while working on it.
I also thought of MacPrefect but I think that will only lock folders and I do
not have a copy to look at.
Any help would be good.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Q] Performa won't boot - another battery problem; worse???
I have a Performa 475 running System 7.1P3. On Saturday, everything
seemed fine, and the Performa was working. It had been working great
until then. On Sunday, it wouldn't boot.
When the Performa is turned on, the chimes sound out clearly, and the
hard-drive starts clicking as usual. However, it stops a few seconds
later. There is no happy, sad, or any other Mac face on the screen.
Just a blank screen. I also couldn't boot with a floppy.
I've recently read about dead Performa batteries causing various
troubles. Could this be one of them? If so, what kind of battery
does it need, and where are good places to try to find a replacement?
Our Performa is 2.25+ years old.
If it isn't the battery, where should I start?
Thanks for suggestions,

Subject: A TCP/IP puzzle (I think)....
I've got a puzzler for all the TCP/IPers out there. We've got
a very ordinary ethernet with AppleTalk, IPX and TCP/IP services.
TCP/IP is the only protocol routed on/off the LAN via an ISDN
connection. I have a LC630 which I hope to use as a mail/FTP
server with MailShare and NetPresenz.
Details:
- POP and FTP clients on our LAN can successfully log onto MailShare
and/or NetPresenz. All handshaking, password stuff, navigation of
directories, etc. all work properly. However, when a file transfer
begins either with POP getting a message or FTP getting a file, the
transfer freezes after about 128 bytes of data. This happens with
both Mac and PC clients on the same LAN as the server.
- POP and FTP clients from remote LANs aren't affected.
- The System software on the LC630 is squeaky clean (formatted hard disk,
fresh install of 7.5, network software 1.5.1, and MacTCP 2.0.6.) Gateway
address, subnet mask, manual address all OK.
- File transfers with AppleShare work fine.
Any thoughts? Much thanks.

Subject: HELP!- Need a folder locking utility.
Hello all,
I'm hoping someone can help me out with a little challenge. I work within a
studio in which I share a 7500/100 with 6 other designers. All work we do
is left on the machine in our own folders. This raises a big problem in
regards to the security our files, since anyone can open up my folder and
go for a browse through the projects/files that I'm working on, even alter
and trash files at their own perusal. This would inturn cause *big*
problems around the studio. I don't mean to be paranoid, and I'm not
stating that the other designers would do such a thing however I want to
protect myself as it's highly competitive and "you never know".
What i really need to find is a utility that will allow me to lock my
folder when I leave the machine. By "lock" I mean to dissallow access to
the folder until a password is typed in, or something similar. I can't
really use the encryption option in stuffit since my folder is often around
the 250meg mark, and trying to compress it at the end of each session is
just pointless. Is there some other type of prog that can allow me to
protect the folder? A system extension or control panel that performs this
function would'nt be sufficient as dissabling either would give access to
the folder again. I have a feeling that there must be something out there,
it's just a matter of tracking the little baby down. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Subject: Multiprotocol online testing
Greetings all,
I'm involved in a project that will result in material being delivered
online via the web or in a stand-alone mode. While the content part looks
to be fairly straightforward, leveraging the testing system to support both
delivery modes looks like it is going to be interesting. I don't have full
specifications written yet, but in the short and sweet the system needs to
be able, from a central test/question bank to:
1) Generate stand-alone questions/tests in HyperCard/SuperCard that can be
shipped out on disk or delivered on a LAN.
2) Act as a CGI program to generate questions/tests for web delivery
(preferably generating HTML code on the fly).
3) Receive responses from either format, score the test, keep item analysis
data, and provide student feedback.
Of course, I'll need to develop easy to use user interfaces for
manipulating the test bank and data, but the main structure is the most
important thing at the moment.
I know there are some real hard spots in this, especially with things like
presenting questions and receiving responses over the web with any kind of
control, but I've seen some pretty interesting things done on some of the
"shopping" sites with keeping track of choices you've made. I also know
this is not something I'm going to write over a weekend, I have comitted to
a fairly long-term investment in development of this system.
I'd appreciate any references to web sites, research articles, or any other
resources that could be applied to this project, especially the web based
testing side of things (I've done a good deal of work on stand-alone/LAN
based test delivery some of which I think I can apply to this). Thanks in
advance for any help.

Subject: Need Font Help!
Hi All,
Recently I have discovered a corrupted font on my Mac, it is MT Extra. For
the life of me I cannot remember which app this belongs to. I would greatly
appreciate any help anyone can give. Also, just what is it that corrupts
these guys anyhow?
Many thanks in advance,

Subject: Photoshop and RAM
I have a Powermac 7100 with 16 megabytes physical RAM and RAM Doubler.
Photoshop runs OK on it, at least for editing small pictures.
RAM Doubler recognizes Photoshop, and knows to leave it alone. But the
doubled RAM is useful to have other apps for switching.

Subject: PowerWave and the Clobbered BTrees
No, not a punk group, but a plea for help:
I bought a PowerWave 604/132 about a month ago (yes, I seriously like it,
my only criticism so far is that the CD-ROM tray seems flimsey in
comparison to the Apple 600i) and the hard drive catalog is constantly
being corrupted, with incorrect numbers of files and other assorted errors.
So far Disk Doctor has been able to repair all the errors and I have not
lost any data in the crashes, which occur every 90 minutes or so.
I am not using RAMdoubler nor SpeedDoubler. I thought it might be Netscape
2.0, but I get clobbered BTrees even if I don't use Netscape.
I am rather suspicious of the FWB disk drivers and I also wonder whether
the fact that I am using MacTCP might have something to do with it. (I
couldn't figure out how to get online with Open Transport, so I added TCP
to the system file and pretended for online purposes that I still had 7.5.1
instead of 7.5.2)
I am running 32 megs of RAM, a 1 gig internal and an APS external 500 meg
hard drive, the latter with active termination and no unusual applications.
Disappointingly, Power Computing has not answered my email inquiries and I
have not been able to get through to their tech line as I never seem to
have more than 20 minutes to wait on hold.
I would certainly appreciate any suggestions as I am getting tired of
spending such a large percentage of my time with Disk Doctor.
Thanks, greatly, in advance...

Subject: se/30 needs HD
Hello all,
A couple of months ago, a number of you gentle folks helped me diagnose
"stiction" on the se/30 at work. They have finally agreed to buy a new HD,
and have asked me to order and install it for them.
Are there any HD's that I either should or should *not* buy? Does an se/30
require a "lesser" or special type of HD so that I don't fry anything
inside? What do I need to know or ask before making the purchase? I told
them that about $200US would buy enough for what we need. I will probably
make the purchase from one of the larger catalog companies.
I've installed hardware upgrades inside my P400, so I'm comfortable with
that. I know the basics, and that I need an anti-static strap and a case
cracker. I would really appreciate any other advise or tips that anyone can
share.
Please e-mail me directly, and I'll summarize for the group.
Thanks in advance,
Carolyn M Barry

Subject: where to order System Update 2.0 ?
Does anyone know where i can order system update 2.0 online or by phone
besides Apple? Preferably in Canada? As far as i can tell, the apple ftp
servers will be tied up for a few days and i'd rather have a disc instead
anyways.
Better yet, magazines like macworld or macuser should include a cdrom disc
with system update 2.0 with a future issue.
thanks for any help.
