Info-Mac is evolving, and with that must come change.
No no, nothing drastic, we've just moved the ftp drop-box. It is the first
step in moving Info-Mac to its new home at MIT, a computer donated by
America OnLine. Here is the info:
Please send all uploads to the ftp site

Subject: [*] AlarmBook v2.0
Instructions:
AlarmBook v2.0 replaces AlarmBook 1.5 submitted over a year ago.
This is a demo of a commercially available version.
"AlarmBook v2.0 is an alarm utility for Macintosh and Power Macintosh
computers. It allows a user to configure periodic and date specific alarms.
These alarms can have visual messages, audio, and tasks to perform.
Version 2.0 is native for Power Macintosh and supports a task script
file which can direct AlarmBook to execute multiple commands at alarm
time. AlarmBook can be used to send messages and files to other AlarmBook
users on an AppleTalk network without a dedicated server. Works with
AfterDark 3.0."

Subject: [*] Eclipse 3.0.1 Installer
Keywords: SCREEN SAVER MONITOR DIM ECLIPSE LEAN MEAN POWERPC PICT JPEG
GIF MOVIE AMBROSIA
------------------
Flying toasters and exploding rabbits are fun for a while, but perhaps
you're getting a little tired of using a screen saver that takes up huge
amounts of disk space, devours memory, slows down your Macintosh, and
causes inexplicable crashes?
Or perhaps you're using one of the many unsupported, slightly buggy,
feature-starved shareware screen savers? If either is the case, we have
the screen saver for you.
Introducing Eclipse 3: a lean, mean, 100 percent PowerPC native screen
saving machine that works great on 68K Macs as well. To eliminate the
problem of Extension conflicts, we designed Eclipse 3 as an application
so that it retains the benefits of Extension-based screen savers while
avoiding their propensity to cause problems. After all, a screen saver is
supposed to save your screen, not crash your machine.
Unlike some other screen savers, Eclipse uses very little memory and
processor time to do its job. Thus, Eclipse will never slow down your
Macintosh. However, even with Eclipse's svelte form, it offers all of the
useful features you could ever want in a screen saver, presented in an
elegant and straight-forward user interface.
Moreover, Eclipse doesn't merely dim the screen; it displays the current
time floating on the screen, graphics (PICTs, JPEGs and GIFs) and
QuickTime movies from a folder full of choices. You can select the
graphics and movies to be displayed by dropping them into the Eclipse
Graphics folder. In addition, Eclipse offers such conveniences as
password protection, and you can customize its extensive feature set any
way you like.
With apologies to a certain brewer, our slogan is "Eclipse: Less filling,
saves great."

Subject: [*] InterSLIP Remote 1.2.1
Dear InterSLIP-Remote-users,
attached to this letter is InterSLIP Remote 1.2.1. It is mainly a
bug-fix-release. It hopefully fixes this stupid 68k-Preferences-dialog-bug
and some spelling mistakes in the documentation.
About InterSLIP Remote (excerpt from the documentation)
With InterSLIP Remote you can control InterSLIP. You still need InterSLIP;
InterSLIP Remote is just an addition.
InterSLIP Remote has four main features which InterSLIP Control and
InterSLIP Setup does not have: with InterSLIP Remote you can measure the
time you are connected to the Internet, it can redial (this feature can be
turned on or off) if the modem of your provider is busy, it keeps a
detailed log of all your connects/disconnects and connection times, and
last but nor least it is scriptable.

For those who don't know NET/Mac... NET/Mac is the application that
supports TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators
can use NET/Mac for their wireless TCP/IP network...
In this version of NET/Mac the following mods/features were implemented:
- Implemented 'deadlock breaker' of K5JB
- Make errormessages more helpful
- Enhance mailfile-handling for shared spool:mqueue folders
- Fix for 'smtp timer' command
- NET/Mac does NOT support the new Buckmaster CD-ROM's HAMCALL
database yet... I am trying to convince Buckmaster that I need
the new data-encryption-method, but as of yet they are not ready
to release a description of the encoding-algorithm...
The old CD-ROM's remain fully supported...
This version obsoletes all versions of info-mac/comm/radio-net-mac in
the Sumex-Aim.stanford.edu (and it's mirror-) archives.
The new NET/Mac has (hopefully) been uploaded to:
- oak.oakland.edu, to the directory /pub/hamradio/mac/digital
- ftp.ucsd.edu, to directory /hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming.
If it's not there (anymore), then look at /hamradio/packet/tcpip/mac.
- hamster.business.uwo.ca, to directory /pub/amsoft
- wa2zkd mirrors UCSD's incoming on his Landline BBS. Ham's w/o ftp
can call 716-544-1863 or 2645.
NET/Mac will be uploaded to PI1HVH.AMPR.ORG, directory public/mac.

Otiru is a game that uses Apple's Quickdraw3D. If you don't have

It runs only on PowerMacs.
In Otiru, you use the mouse to guide yourself around an arena suspended

bounce off. You are constantly falling, albeit slowly, and will stop when
you reach the arena floor. The idea is to keep bouncing off platforms,
getting as high as you can.
To really appreciate this game, I *highly* recommend using Quickdraw3D
hardware acceleration. Barring that, make the game window as small as you
can. See the Readme for more info.

Sokoban is a strategy game of pushing treasure chests through a maze.
The chests are so heavy that they can only be pushed, not pulled, and
you can only push one at a time. Thinking ahead (or liberal use of
"undo") is required for the harder levels.
Version 2.1 adds
- over 200 more levels
- the ability to choose your own keys to control the game
Other features are
- Color or monochrome graphics
- Able to undo 10,000 moves
- Can run in only 128K of memory
- Can make your own levels

This is the latest release of our Sword Dream II 3D Demo.
I think Alex (our graphics programmer) really did a great job. Please note
that the graphics are not final, yet. You'll notice that walking characters
have a black box around them and roofs don't fit well with walls. All of
this will be fixed by our main designer, Eugenio, in the next days - but it
isn't a code problem.
The final Sword Dream II release is still projected for year end.
The demo can (and should) be redistributed. Feel free to do so.
We didn't test this extensively on PowerPC. If you find problems, don't

Subject: (Q) Disk contents shrinking after backup and CopyDoubler problem
Here's a mystery. Yesterday I set up a Zip drive on one office computer and
backed up the hard drive of another computer across our AppleTalk network
onto a Zip disk by dragging, using CopyDoubler. The copies arrived smaller
than they left, but apparently intact. The original drive was 150 Megs, the
Zip drive 100. I thought at first the cause might be the smaller minimum
file size needed for the smaller disks, but even large files show about a
20 percent shrinkage.
I also ran into a quirk of CopyDoubler. When you view a remote disk across
the network you can see a folder on the disk labelled "Trash." When I try
to drag the entire hard disk image onto my zip drive backup Copy Doubler
reports that I don't have enough permission to copy the contents of the
trash and that only visible contents will be copied (there is nothing in
the trash). The catch is, that the same error message is issued for every
folder which follows Trash alphabetically: W-Z. If I don't try to copy this
Trash folder, all the succeeding folders copy fine. CopyDoubler is clearly
getting confused by the Trash folder. Anybody have any notions what the
problem is. This prevents me from doing a drag-and-drop incremental backup
without first deselecting the Trash Folder.

After struggling with a series of crashes recently I decided to buy
Conflict Catcher, only to discover that it can't help me because it
requires the crashes to be regular and reproducible and therefore testable.
Mine are random. In addition CC deals mainly with crashes that occur at
startup, and mine rarely do.
I'm not sorry to have CC because I'll probably find it useful the next time
I have the sort of problem it's designed for; but if you're tight for cash
it's not the first thing to reach for if your problems are irregular and
not regularly reproducible.

Subject: Saving money with competitive upgrades
It's always worth asking about upgrades when buying new software, even if
you think you may not qualify. I saved a substantial amount on FileMaker
Pro 3.0 because the Claris Works that came bundled with my Performa
qualified me for an upgrade. And Now Utilities qualified me for Conflict
Catcher. MacConnection was happy to read off an list of qualifying products
which was more extensive than I would have guessed; although they warned me
that the installers would be looking for the qualifying products on my hard
disk, which turned out to be untrue. I had removed Now Utilities because of
conflicts and CC installed without it just fine, and FMPro never asked for
any link to a qualifying product. I suppose some installers do this kind of
checking, and MacConnection issues the warning to be on the safe side.
You confirm ownership of the qualifying product by faxing the dealer the
title page of the manual--cheap enough for the money you save.
The moral is even if you think you are buying a new sort of software, you
may own something that qualifies you for an upgrade discount anyway. Just
ask.

With apologies to a certain brewer, our slogan is "Eclipse: Less filling,
saves great."

time you are connected to the Internet, it can redial (this feature can be
turned on or off) if the modem of your provider is busy, it keeps a
detailed log of all your connects/disconnects and connection times, and
last but nor least it is scriptable.

About the Keyboard Swapper INIT by Mattias Ellert
With this INIT installed, a change of the keyboard layout by typing
opt-cmd-space or cmd-space, or by using the keyboard menu, only affects
the current keyboard. If a key on a different keyboard is press, the INIT
automatically swaps to the script and keyboard layout last used by that
keyboard. The INIT also enables the keyboard menu on systems with only
one script installed.

Subject: [*] NET/Mac2.3.59

If you don't have
Quickdraw3D, it is available free from
.
It runs only on PowerMacs.
In Otiru, you use the mouse to guide yourself around an arena suspended
in space. Above the "floor" are a number of floating platforms that you

Subject: Conflict Catcher limitations

Just
ask.
