Subject: [*] Boogers 1.5.1c

Abstract:
Boogers 1.5.1b is a minor update to the classic game, Booger. Well,
classic as in, circa 1993. This is a game intended for *small*
children, and for people who last less than ten seconds in games like
Marathon. Boogers runs on ANY color Macintosh with at least 1 meg of
total RAM. Yes, really.

You move left and right and catch boogers being sneezed by a raving
looney. Eventually an automatic booger magnet appears and things get a
little more complicated. You can try to shoot it down, but the falling
missile might hit your booger-powered tank.

Gestalt Selectors List (GSL)

It lists all sorts of information about the Gestalt Manager, but mainly
about selectors and the meaning of the returned values.
The Gestalt Manager is part of the Apple Macintosh System Software to
enable programmers to determine the availability of certain software and
hardware.

Contributions (new info, remarks, etc.) for the list can be send to:
[email protected]

Beside a large number of new and changed selectors, these are the major
changes since the previous version:

***************************************************************************
An anonymous contributor provided the Gestalt! info for these upcoming
Macintosh computers:
Power Macintosh ??? (codenamed Elixer)
Power Macintosh 7200/120 ? (name unofficial, same type as 7200 with
'pclk' returning value for 120 mHz)
Power Macintosh 9500/150

News in MacWEEK provided some more Macintosh models to hunt for machine type
values.

My colleague Marcel Comello provided me with System 7.5.3 for the PCI
PowerMacs and using the Gestalt.Appl I found some new info.

An anonymous contributor found two more bits in a secret selector which
enables certain unofficial features of the Finder. It is now also known a
second secret Finder selector exists to disable features.

Includes information from the System 7.5 Update 2.0 /System 7.5.3 TechNote
which is included with the SU 2.0 Seed 11 distribution.

Subject: [*] MidiGraphy 1.1.0 - Mac MIDI Sequencer

Friends,
Attached is a world class midi music sequencer program from Mr.
Tontata of Japan (for the Macintosh, of course). MIDIGraphy 1.1.0, the
latest in a series of releases that started in 1993, offers features that
no other sequencer attempts to provide - as far as I know - and makes
elegant use of the Mac color graphic user interface. And it works. A midi
sequencer can play midi music files and can record incoming note
information from a midi equipped keyboard or other device that creates midi
message streams.
I have added a simpletext note covering email addresses for Mr.
Tontata and for his supporter in Japan, info on midi sites in Japan and
forthcoming changes in that part of our world. The note also contains a
modest explanation of setting up Apple's MIDI Manager to work with
MIDIGraphy. The documentation for MIDIGraphy is all in Japanese. Mr.
Tontata has given me permission to post his wonderful work at InfoMac. He
asks that the entire package, preferably in its cpt form, be posted if you
upload it to other archives.
Please archive this package in the appropriate InfoMac area. And
many thanks again for supporting us.

* What is it?

Skittles is an action/puzzle game for one or two players! You control
genetically altered Skittles which fall from the sky, trying to keep them
>From stacking up to the top of the screen.

The Skittles engineers have recently been experimenting with new
flavors and colors. One of the more psychopathic scientists decided to
alter the Skittles' formulas through genetic mutation. The first test batch
was produced, and a teeming, jiggly mass of coagulated, living Skittles
appeared. They quickly began to multiply and pile up into large groups. As
the scientists fled screaming from the building, a few clever minds noticed
that the Skittles were highly reactive. When four of the same type of
Skittle touched, they would instantly vaporize.

There's only one hope left for the Skittles plant, its workers, and
the small city that they inhabit. Vaporize the Skittles before they run
rampant and destroy everything in their path! You are the only hope left
before they crush the entire city.

Enjoy! *Stiles

Regarding your problem with Zip drives, I sense the panic in your message.

That's why I have to add the caveat that Zips are Hard Drives, which means
they WILL FAIL at one point or another.

They are great for BACKUP, which means the original had better be somewhere
else.

That's why it is a good idea NEVER to have your sole data on *any* kind of
removable, Zip included. What I usually follow is if I'm using a Zip for
offline storage, I make two copies. That way, if one Zip goes bad, I can
always resort to files I've copied to the other. It can get complex, but I
sleep a LOT better.

Subject: Changing the color of Word'

Can be done with a little judicious ResEditing. I think Tanya Engst wrote
this:

Changing the Color of Word's Paragraph Marks

--------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 5.0, 5.1, 6.0
--------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=======

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, you can change paragraph marks,
tabs, and spaces to any of the colors available in the Macintosh
system. This can make it much easier to see spaces and tabs for the
visually impaired.

Note: A simply procedure that will make the paragraph marks darker is to
switch to black-and-white monitor mode while working with Word. To switch
to black-and-white monitor mode, from the Apple main menu select Control
Panel and click Monitor. From the Monitor dialog choose Black and White.

The process of changing paragraph mark colors requires a calculator that
can convert decimal values to Hexadecimal and ResEdit, or a comparable
resource utility to change one of Word's resources.

First, the desired color must be determined. If you are willing to settle for
black skip to changing the resource

1. Choose Control Panel(s) from the Apple Menu.

2. Click on Color. (Double-click in System 7.x.)

3. Under Highlight Color choose Other. This will bring up the system
color wheel.

4. Choose a color from the color wheel. Write down the values for
Red, Green and Blue. With the calculator, convert these values
individually to their hexadecimal equivalent. Write down the
Hexadecimal values. (Note: the standard Calculator Desk Accessory
does not convert decimal to hexadecimal.)

5. Close the Control Panel (Control Panels in System 7).

Secondly, the values must be changed in Word's COLR resource:

1. Make a duplicate of Microsoft Word 5.0.

2. Launch ResEdit and open the copy of Microsoft Word.

3. Double-click on the COLR resource.

4. Double-click on 128.

5. Highlight the 3 sets of four digit numbers and replace these with
the calculated hexadecimal values. The values are currently set to
gray (0080 0080 0080). Black is 8000 8000 8000. Note: there are no spaces
necessary when
inputting the hexadecimal values.

6. Quit ResEdit and save changes to Microsoft Word 5.0.

7. Open Word 5.0 and the paragraph marks, spaces will appear in the
Untitled1 document.

MORE INFORMATION
================

This cannot be done with versions prior to 5.0 since the paragraph
marks were made into a resource in Word 5.0.

Sample Values:

Red: FFFF 0000 0000 (4 Fs and 8 zeros)
Green 0000 FFFF 0000 (4 zeros, 4 Fs, and 4 zeros)
Blue 0000 0000 FFFF (8 zeros and 4 Fs)

Subject: Engram Stop & Go - what happened?

Greetings,
At long last (2 years!) after getting Stop & Go I finally manage to find
and send off the registration to Engram. The registration returned saying
that their "Business Reply Permit" had cancelled from the post office
(meaning they either no longer are at that address with that permit number,
or are gone). Anybody know what is happened to them?

If they are indeed gone, it is a great loss. Their Stop & Go product was
having lots of trouble functioning on both my LC, and now my PowerMac.
Anybody know of a good replacement product?

Essentially what it did, was copy the entire contents of the RAM into a
hidden file on the hard disk just before the Mac shut down, and upon bootup
the Mac copied the file back into RAM. If it ever did work, it would be a
great timesaver, not to mention an energy saver because the sleep function
on a PowerMac still draws electricity. If the file was resident on the
hard disk, I could unplug my machine to keep power surges from coming
through, and then when I come home, reboot where I left off at the same
speed of waking a sleeping Mac. If somebody stil makes such a utility, and
it is a System 7.5.2 compatible and SCSI Manager 4.3 compatible, not to
mention PCI compatible, that would be great. Please let me know if such a
utility exists.

Thank you.

Subject: Ethernet-card address (A)

Hallo,

I saw a question about getting the hardware ethernetcard-
address. We had the same problem here.
Apple has a little application, the Apple LAN Utility.
With that you can read the address even if your Mac is not
connected to a network. Works fine !!
I am sure it will help you.

BTW. This comes from ftp.apple.... etc. I dont know the
exact location, but I searched a bit, and YES, there it was.
Apple has a VERY NICE Tech-Info-Lib-database, accessable via WWW
(NetScape), where you can search on (problem) keywords.
In this database I found a reference to this
Apple LAN Utility.
This TIL is at: http://www.info.apple.com/til.html
If you then look at Software Updates, US, Macintosh, you
will find this utility.

How Does Claris Support The PowerMac? Let me count the ways.

They offer an updater for ClarisDraw. If you download the updater, you learn

No problem. I called the 800 number. It turns out that 68K updates are free

I've tried using Easy View to read some of the listserv digests I receive
and I've had terrible results. It works great for Info-Mac and TidBITS, but
others (e.g. MACWAY) are lousy. I must not have it configured properly, but
can't for the life of me figure out how to get it right. The
"documentation" that comes with Easy View wasn't much help to me. Any and
all suggestions are welcome!

Well, looks like I jumped the gun a bit in my "helpful" answer to this
question. Only days after the clean install, the problem returned. So that
makes two people who are still vexed by this problem!

Guess I was a bit too anxious to start contributing...

I am considering buying a macintosh to do some web page
development and I was wondering if you think that 16 Mb RAM is
enough to use Photoshop with since i am not going to be editing
huge files?

Thanks,

Subject: problem with net install of system software

I was trying to make a zip disk with the system software install
files, in order to make an easy installation configuration for
all the systems around here.

I followed the procedure described by apple for making a
net install, such as putting all the installation disks
into a folder along with the installation program and script.
I did the same for system update 1.0.

Unfortunately it did not work, when I start the installation
of for instance of the update, the program starts asking to
put in the floppy 1 or so. I also downloaded the netinstall
version of the update, and this one works. When I compare
the netinstall version downloaded, with the version I created
myself I don't see any difference. Anybody has any Idea whats
hapening here?

thanks, Gerrit.

Subject: QK3, Power PCs, Photomatic, problems

I would like to hear from folks concerning their experiences with QuicKeys
(pref 3 and up) and Photomatic on the Power Mac. I was able to get OK to
run on a PowerMac a few weeks back, but have been unable to repeat the
experience; and Photomatic appears to deeply dislike the machine I was
installing on.

1. Anybody successfully get either or both to run? If so, could email me a
list of the extensions and CP's you have loaded as well as your system
version?

2. Anybody know for sure what the conflict (s) are?

Finally, I have also heard of system slowdowns on the Power Mac after
installing QK due to "retro-patching" of the system with non-native code.

This was offered as a reference by someone on the graphics-list, and may be
helpful if you are also looking at this set of challenges...

Any info appreciated. Please email direct to me and I'll summarize for the
list. This was also posted to the graphics-list.

Not an accelerator; you will need a video card. The only current model I
am aware of is the MIcron Xceed, and it may not even be currently
manufactured and/or marketed.

Last I saw them the cards were about $250-300.

A friend of mine has one of these up and running. I can certainly pass
questions on to him if no one else here meets this criteria.

There's a commercial product called "Nok Nok" that does this.
One of the ZiffNet utilities, "ShareDevil", also does this, I believe.
There's nothing one can change with ResEdit or whatever so far as I know
to enable this without one of the above.

Install AppleShare.
