Subject: [*] Demon 1.0b1 - Doom level editor

MacDeu has been renamed "Demon". This file should replace the file
"macdeu-53b9v4.hqx".

Demon is a Doom level editor. This is a beta version, and is not entirely
stable. However, it does work. You can make levels for doom. There are
still a few interface inconsistentcies left, but for the most part it works
correctly.

You can always get the newest version of this program at my home page:

Improvements for Demon version 1.0b1:
*Added support for multiple REAL mac windows
*Added two new config options: windowWidth and windowHeight. They let you
set the default size for windows.
*Added scroll bars instead of auto scroll
*Added real menus. They all work besides the Objects menu.
*Fixed second sidedef dialog
*Lindef draw mode will start drawing on a vertex if there is one under the
cursor.

This file updates DiskTracker updates DiskTracker 1.0.1 (fat) to 1.0.2
(fat). It requires that you already have DiskTracker 1.0.1 (fat). You can
also download the entire 1.0.2 package elsewhere on this archive.

Changes in version 1.0.2:
- Fixed memory management bug which caused crashes when dealing with large
numbers of large volumes.
- Arrow keys can now be used to select volumes in the "Scan Online Volumes"
dialog.
- Bug where file list item filter isn't remembered after chooseing "File
List Prefereneces" fixed.
- Disk scan error reporting improved (it now reports errors!).
- Currently selected file sort method is now underlined in column headers.
- Selection size indicator no longer becomes negative when large numbers of
large items are selected.
- Annoying and quite time consuming disk sorting while scanning has been
replaced with efficient sorting system.

Subject: [*] DiskTracker 1.0.2

DiskTracker is an extremely powerful and flexible disk cataloging and
management system. It combines a huge feature set with a really easy to
use Mac-like interface. With DiskTracker, you can quickly and easily
create a catalog of every file on every one of your floppy disks, hard
drives, CD-ROMs, optical drives, servers, or whatever. Naturally,
DiskTracker can read into StuffIt and Compact Pro archives and
self-expanding applications.

After scanning your disks, you can then search the catalog at unbelievable
speeds with the powerful searching facility (including multi-parameter and
duplicate file searching). You can easily create professional looking disk
labels with the built in disk labeling facility and label template
designer.

DiskTracker requires System 7.0 or later and at least 512K of available
memory.

Subject: [*] Internet Logger 1.5

Internet Logger is a utility application allows you to keep track of how
much time
you spend on your internet accounts. It requires System 7 or later. It can
also be used to track long distance telephone use or to track time spent on
client accounts. First, among many other potential uses, Internet Logger
will provide a convenient means to fully document your internet connections,
including:

* Tracking session times and cumulative use time by day and month.
* Ability to enter complex session rate structures and automatically
estimate session
and cumulative costs by day or month.
* Ability to count down time remaining on either prepaid hours or hours
charged at a
flate rate.
* Optional Log file documenting session and cumulative times and estimated
costs.
* Optionally compute session times by rounding up to the nearest minute.
Some online
services seem to compute times this way. You can check it yourself.
* Allows automatic connection via PPP, SLIP, or operation as a manual timer.
* Allows multiple timers with individual settings. You can keep track of
use of
multiple providers conveniently. Each can have it's own log file.
* Compatibility with Open Transport when used with FreePPP.

Internet Logger requires System 7.0 or later.

This release is a substantial upgrade with improved access and editing for
log files and many new interface customization options.

Thank you,
Eric Preston

Scott, although you don't give all the particulars of your
hardware/software, I suspect that the campus ARA server is not running the
Apple IP Gateway - but needs to be. This is necessary in order for TCP/IP
packets to be "wrapped" within ARA's AppleTalk packets.

Besides the ARA server, it sounds as though you are running File Sharing
on your own Mac at school. Unless you are also running something like
Timbuktu, during an ARA session the Eudora program, even when booted from
the copy on your school Mac, is actually running on your home machine, and
thus needs the services of the IP Gateway to find Internet servers
(including DNS's).

As far as I know, the IP Gateway is still an extra-cost program not
included with System software. I'm guessing, but perhaps the next version
of ARA, in conjunction with a stable version of Open Transport, will
eliminate the need for it altogether.

I don't think this is a NewsWatcher problem.

Some newsservers are set up to only serve connections from certain
domains. You may be in different domains when you log in from home
and from work. Or it could be a domain name problem. Or else I don't
know :-) Contact your server's (i.e. Vesta's) administrator for info

You can do what you want by clicking on the Even radio

Hey.

If only I were a programmer.

Tell me if this exists, s'il vous plait. Say I'm wandering around the
finder, and I want to Get Info on a particular file. Wouldn't it be neat
that, instead of selecting the file and going to the menu (or hitting
command-G) I could hit control while clicking on the icon, and the Get

Presumably, one could tinker with an extension that does this, and make
an executable Finder command happen with a button click. Would that not
be cool?

Let me know.

Subject: Bug Report and Solution

Bug in ClarisWorks 4.0CD and 4.04CD??

There seems to be a repeatable bug in the Mac version of both ClarisWorks
4.0CD and 4.04CD.

It appears that with some wordprocessor files, if one includes a footer,
the computer will crash when one tries to close the file.

The footer can be saved within the file and printed, but using the close
box will crash the computer immediately.

The computer will also crash if you click the close box before saving. (It
saves first and then crashes the computer.)

This bug is repeatable and interesting in that if you open the file that
was saved with the "corrupting footer", and THEN REMOVE the footer, the
file can be closed with no problem. PUT THE FOOTER BACK AND IT CRASHES THE
SYSTEM AGAIN WHEN THE CLOSE BOX IS USED.

What I don't understand is why it only seems to happen for some files (20%
to 30%). The files I'm working with were originally created in Microsoft
Works 2.x and I imported them very early this morning into ClarisWorks
4.04CD. Then the "fun" began as I tried to format them for my current
needs. The files are between 6 and 12 pages in times 12 font the footer is
times 9 bold.

I even tried a footer without typing anything in one of the "crashing
files" by just creating the footer. IT STILL CRASHED REPEATEDLY WITH NO
DATA IN IT. The file was just fine as soon as I removed the blank (no
spaces even) footer.

Interestingly, not all of the files I created crashed even with the footer
in place.

Also interesting, the files DO NOT CRASH THE COMPUTER if the extensions are
turned off by holding the shift key down at startup. However, if the
extension manager is used and then the computer is rebooted, it will still
crash.

Even more interesting, if the extensions folder is pulled out of the system
folder and the computer is rebooted, the machine will still crash when a
"corrupted" file with its footer is closed.

My computer is an 8500 with AppleVision 1710 moniter. The system has just
had a "clean install" done on it in the last 24 hours and all reloaded
software was carefully installed. Norton Utilities reports no problems and
I defragumented BEFORE loading ClarisWorks 4.0CD into it. I have stripped
all Claris products out of the machine and reloaded only ClarisWorks 4.0CD
and updated to ClarisWorks 4.04CD. I've stripped the program and reloaded
it five times

If this message gets to anyone knowledgeable enough to explain what is
going on, please let me know. I'd also like to know how to fix it or when
Claris will fix it; assuming that the 20 hours I've put into this so far
are not a "figment bug" of my imagination.

There used to be a great little patch in the Info-Mac archives that
added a slider to the Sharing control panel. It allowed one to manually
set the amount of CPU time dedicated to file sharing. This would be of
great use to me right now as I've just set up an old Mac to share a
couple of CD-ROMs, opticals, and a Syquest. My users love not having to
drag-'n-plug these devices but the performance leaves something to be
desired. It's not bad performance - but it could be better, especially
as this old machine is being dedicated to playing mini-server. Does
anyone have a copy they'd be willing to resubmit to the archives ?

I am wondering if it is possible to simply add an FPU into say,

probably cheaper and easier to do that replacing the CPU, since the

That's not the only way. Another company, Kennect Technology, located in
Los Gatos, CA, made an external floppy drive with an adaptor which
allowed a Plus to read/write and even format all kinds of formats.

But as with AE's solution: (1) it was not cheap and (2) the company

serial connection. We are using DW driver 7.2.5. We have printed with
background
printing turned on and turned off.

The problem doesn't seem to be tied to any particular application. We have
experienced it with Word 5.1a, FileMaker 2.1v3, and most of all, printing large
reports from our Ameritech Scholar (also known as Dynix) library system. We
have
purchased more than 30 DW 600 printers and all of them have this problem.

HP Tech Support says they have never heard of this problem before. Has anyone
else experienced anything like this? Any ideas for troubleshooting?

Microsoft up as the model to emulate in this reguard. The Word 56

want to loose customers.

Subject: LEDs for hard drives on PM-7100?

My little SE had a little green light that would flash whenever the hard
disk was being accessed, and I can't get used to the absence of one on
the PowerMac. Now, having peeked within, I know the hard drive has the
little connector pin @ front. Suppose I want to hook up such a light:
how do I go about obtaining one, and--in the event that someone has al-
ready done this on their own--where is the easiest place to mount one
and how does one most easily run the wires out of the CPU box?

(don't bother telling me about software such as CP's DriveLight: not
interested in a flickering decal on my screen, I want a LIGHT).

We've been having similar perplexing problems with several machines
here for months. So far I've found only one common thread--they all
had their hard disks optimized by Speed Doubler shortly before the
problems began. Backing up your files and reinitializing all your
hard disks is the next thing I would try. :(.

Also, I discovered something very interesting (and pretty weird
to my way of thinking). A few of these machines recently received
supplemental external APS hard drives. As you all know, APS always
includes a system folder on their drives so that they're bootable
out of the box. If the drive isn't going to be your boot drive, you
should get rid of this folder. Well, on one machine this folder had
not been erased, and the Mac was booting up *using pieces from both
system folders (on the internal and external drives)*. I discovered
this because when I trashed the system folder on the external drive
the computer would not boot, even though it had a perfectly sound-
looking blessed system folder on its own internal drive, and had `
been mounting the internal as the boot drive for weeks.

So, it might behoove you to check all those external drives to be
sure there's no system pieces floating about on them.

If you get any better responses explaining the random-freeze weirdness,
I'd be happy to hear them, as we still haven't totally eliminated it.
My thought is that it's probably due to corruption caused either by
optimization, or (at least in the one case) by duplicate system folders,
or both. I suspect that until we wipe every involved disk and start over
>From scratch, problems will persist.

BTW, what system are you using? The above machines are all using 7.1.2.
If you're using 7.5. or later, all bets are off--it freezes all the time
anyway.

The only limit is that imposed by your conscience. I assume that there is
no self-destruct to be disabled...but then again I've never used any
version of Netscape that long, since new versions appear every couple of
weeks!

Check out current prices on the PowerMac 7100/80-700-CD. This is IMHO
one of the best Mac deals in a long time. It's a 601 processor, comes
configured with 8MB RAM. I think you can get the whole ball of wax,
CPU, keyboard and a MultipleScan 15" monitor, for somewhere around
$1900, or maybe even less by now, leaving you $$$$ left over to add
the extra RAM you need.

I bought this package a few months ago, and it's one sweet machine.
Now, if it would just run something older than 7.5.1. . . ;).

fantastic price, but I hear it's considerably more buggy than the 8500.
Does anyone have any experience with these machines? Please let me know! :)

There is a small extension called StickyClick which does it:

Folk, I've previously been able to write Aladdin's Leonard Rosenthal by

don't recall his telling us of any new address. But memory is the second
thing to go. In any event, I tried to send him the following note. It didn't
work. I ask one of two responses. I've no pride. I'll take either.

Where is Leonard these days? What is the answer to my question?

Subject: task manager needed

hi,

i'm looking for a solid task manager--i don't need the
rolodex/phone/contact/calendar functions.

i need the following functions:
+ a to-do list with indents (outlining)
+ ability to run in the background without eating too much memory
+ ability to change fonts/colors on individual items
+ flexibility in list order and column names/sizes
+ gantt-type chart/timeline
+ reasonably priced

the closest thing i've found so far is in control. (if necessary,
i could also use one that only works on windows, like ecco). i'm
a tad worried about the memory it takes up. i do have 24MB, but i
tend to use memory-hogging apps (word, pagemaker, etc.).

any other ideas?

thanks in advance!

It happens sometimes for me too (7500, 32M RAM) without any Microsoft
products.

I'm pretty sure that I've tracked it down to having used several
memory intensive applications during a session, not necessarily
simultaneously. When it started to happen I tested the hard drives
and software each time but since there never was any problem that
obviously wasn't caused by something else (most tests reported no
problems) I stopped worrying. But it _is_ annoying.

I've seen this, I think: the times I ran across it, it was indeed caused
by some combination of Office, it's control panels and subsidiary
applications. When I saw it I was mystified, because invariably the
finder listed no applications running, meaning some invisible and
probably un-named application was causing the trouble. It was only by
tearing out chunks of office (control panel, et. al.) that I was able to
make it go away; since a subsequent re-install, things have been quiet...
