Subject: [*] Audio Clock Sounds v1, Stereo 16-bit

The "Audio Clock v1" sounds make an excellent addition to any Mac with
System 7.5 or above. Used with the "Date and Time" control panel that
comes standard with the Mac OS, these sounds enhance your computer by
making a sound play at 1/4 past, 1/2 past, 1/4 'Til, and at the top of
the hour. If you choose, you can even have it chime the same number of
times as the hour.

Audio Clock v1 contains five stereo sound files. They say "Top of the
Hour," "1/4 Past," "1/2 Past," "1/4 'Til," and there is also an
alternative "Chime." The voice is a deep, robotic/hi-tech type sounding
voice. The chime compliments the style of the rest of the sounds, as it
is a deep, techno-type bass gong sound that works nicely when chiming
repetitively.

Audio Clock v1 is available in both 16-bit and 8-bit, stereo formats. The
16-bit samples are at a 44kHz sample rate and are virtually CD quality
and work well if you have a nice audio set-up for your Mac. If you are
wishing to minimize memory usage, the 8-bit version is still a quality
set, but are not as clear as the 16-bit version. Either version can be
downloaded here or at the Clixsounds WWW site,
http://www.edmondsun.com/clix/.

Installation of the Audio Clock v1 sounds is very easy, and step-by-step
instructions are included for proper set-up. You must have System 7.5 or
above installed.

Recently, many users of TIA have had problems with Netcom. Since SLiRP
still works fine with Netcom, I have created an easy-to-use
Netcom/SLiRP/PPP Installer program for Macs which installs PPP, and the PPP
and MacTCP settings you will need to set up Netcom and PPP. The installer
also details the specific step-by-step instructions for installing SLiRP

Subject: [*] NetStripper v2.5.1 FAT

NetStripper is a small utility that converts Macintosh text files to DOS
text files, DOS and Unix text files to Macintosh text files and can strip
single carriage returns from a text file while changing all double carriage
returns to singles that are *not* deleted. The program operates with a
simple drag-and-drop interface (ie: just drop the files that need to be
processed on to its icon), using modifier keys held down while the program
starts to choose which translation mode is required.

Version 2.5.1 FAT (attached to this message) adds a secondary mode to the
CR-strip translation - instead of replacing double carriage returns with
single carriage returns, it leaves them intact while removing all single
carriage returns. The original CR-strip translation is still in place, and
a Preferences command is used to switch between them.

This version replaces all previous versions, and is a FAT binary.

Subject: [*] Rudolph 2.0

Rudolph is an automated merryxmas and merry2xmas virus fighter. It can detect
and disinfect stacks infected with the merryxmas virus. Further, it inoculates
stacks against ever being infected. Rudolph is a major improvement over other
anti-merryxmas stacks in the following ways:
1) automated execution and quitting (runs unattended in "Startup Items" or
"Shutdown Items")
2) inoculation of stacks - prevent infection before it happens!
3) an option for single-file checking, disinfection, and inoculation (and not
just an entire volume)
Rudolph was created by Jeff Inglis and Jim Rodda, of the Middlebury College
Language Schools.
The merryxmas and merry2xmas viruses are HyperCard-only viruses.

Single Number is a puzzle game for one player, specifically, one
who is familiar with puzzle books or with the games found in the
puzzle pages of weekly magazines.
In this program, mac shows puzzles which the player solves.

Numbers (1-9) are given in several cells in the 9x9 matrix. Decide
the rest according to the following restrictions: "Each number (1-9)
shoud appear only once in the 9 cells of each vertical line, horizontal
line, and 3x3 matrix surrounded by the thicker boundary."

1. SE or newer Macs !
2. System 7.0 or later. (This game has Balloon Help, is Apple Event savvy,
and is a power application [fat binary].) Requires courier font.
3. Memory requirement changes according to the monitor's color depth.
512KB is enough in B/W macs and 1MB in 8bit color. (Although this
program runs in 24bit color, it requires more memory and works solwer!

-Introduced a floating window, which helps the player to go back or
forward his input process, which is not available in book mode.
-Player can move or close the windows.
-Can make puzzle in background.
-Revert command does not initialize the log data. (This means that
this command is equal to the repeated "Take One Back" command.)
-Changed the appearance of window and fixed minor bugs.

Subject: (Q) File synchronization via ftp connection

I have 2 Power Macs between which I exchange files via ftp over a phone PPP
connection. On one I am running the new NetPresenz application and on the
other I run Fetch. What I would like to do is periodically synchronize
selected folders on the 2 machines. Unfortunately, the available
synchronization software that I know of only works if one can mount the disk
of one machine on the desktop of the other. Since I'm not running ARA, I
can't use this software. I was wondering whether anyone has/knows of an
AppleScript or application that would allow synchronization in my current
configuration.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

We upgraded a Performa 475 from a 68LC040 to a 68040 without any trouble,

>it's necessary--or even advisable--to upgrade FileMaker, i.e., whether the

>what else?

FileMaker Pro 3.0's relational features should be reason enough to
upgrade. Do you currently use lookups in FileMaker Pro to link database
information together? With a relational database, you will eliminate the
data duplication that lookups produce and be able to maintain data
consistency across multiple databases. Relational links are dynamic, so
when data changes in one location, it is automatically updated in the
other. FileMaker Pro is fully relational, supporting one to one, one to
many, and many to many relationships.

However, there are numerous other improvements in this new release. If
you have a Power Macintosh, FileMaker Pro is now fully PowerPC native.
If you are using System 7.5, FileMaker Pro now supports Drag and Drop (a
good reason to upgrade to System 7.5 if you have not already done so).
For network users, FileMaker Pro now has TCP/IP support. This also
allows for the sharing of FileMaker databases over the internet. Support
for larger files (up to 10 times larger) and the maximum number of open
files has been increased (50, up from 16).

The above are just a few of the enhancements. Overall, there are 40 new
features. Since you are a current user of FileMaker Pro, you can
purchase the upgrade for right around $100.

FileMaker Pro 3.0 will automatically convert your version 2.1 databases
to 3.0 format. It will even allow you to change your existing lookups to
relational links. FileMaker Pro will also convert any text file into a
FileMaker database automatically. This allows you to click on a
tab-delimitted file and have it open as a FileMaker database
automatically.

Go down to your local computer store and check it out. I guarantee you
will be impressed.

Subject: [Q]:Recovering from Recovery

The cure for hard disk recovery can sometimes be worse than the disease.

Last week a friend's hard disk died. No warnings, of course; it just
refused to mount. Not being totally clueless, she ran Norton and MacTools
on it; they deduced that the master directory block was fried. So she
sent it to me, on the grounds that I had enough hard disk real estate
to assay a recovery.

SCSI Evaluator confirmed that the disk had sprouted numerous bad blocks,
so I turned MacTools loose on the disk with orders to recover everything
that looked remotely like a file. MacTools worked. However, I now have
a problem...

I have a hard disk partition containing a single folder. The folder
contains over 5000 files. Just doing a "Get info" on it takes three hours,
and trying to open it in the finder causes an instant freeze.

The obvious solution is to shift the files out into smaller folders
(say, ten 500 file folders), or into archives, but none of the file browsers
I've tried are able to cope with the monster. Stuffit Deluxe is even less
happy with this folder than the Finder is.

I'm at my wits end. Anyone got any clues about how to split this big
directory up?

Subject: Another MS Word question

Greetings all,

Recent queries & discussions about Word 5.1 & 6 have reminded me of a
question I've been meaning to ask for a while now. After my recent upgrade
to 5.1a I am perfectly happy with my WP and have no desire to obtain or use
Word 6. However, I have a requirement to be able to read & modify Word 6
format files, which I receive on disk and as e-mail attachments.

I recall hearing something (way back when the evil nature of Word 6 for Mac
was first being exposed) about a utility to permit Word 5.1 users to open and
read Word 6 files. Where/how can this utility be obtained? Is it just a
read-only device, or does it permit Word 6 files to be edited and/or saved in
5.1 format?
TIA for you assistance.

The votes are in and are unanimous. The ClarisWorks database is functional &
not bad at all--especially if one's database needs are simple. However,
FileMaker has a number of advantages. The major pluses in FM are speed,

Everyone who responded had experience with both FileMaker & the ClarisWorks

Dear Digest readers,
I tried going to the Wisconson University FTP site to find a newer version

I use a Stylewriter 2200, and its drivers if that makes any difference.
Also, I do not use QuickDraw GX, because it crashes my machine.

Subject: Help - My Mac Freezes.

I have a Quadra 605 with 20 meg of RAM ( 40 meg with RamDoubler) and
four hard drives. My system folder is on my 180 meg hard drive, I
have a 240 meg hard drive for applications, a 350 meg hard drive for
documents and a 730 meg hard drive that I use for backup.

For some time this arrangement has worked nicely but about two months
ago I began having freezes for no apparent reason. I can usually
recover by restarting the computer. But the freezes seem to be
happening more often (sometimes 4 or 5 times a day).

I have tried all the conventional things:

I ran Norton Utilities and MacTools
I ran Disk First Aid
I rebuilt the desktops
I zapped the parameter ram (with TechTools)
I reformated my hard drives (with Silverlining)
I optimized my hard drives
I reinstalled fresh copies of my major software from the original
disks
I restarted with the shift key down to prevent extensions from loading
I ran Disinfectant (the latest version that I downloaded last week)
I did a clean system install

And after all that, the freezes continue. They come at various
times. Sometimes when I am opening a program. Sometimes in the middle
of a save or a calculation. Sometimes when the computer is idle and
no applications are open. Sometimes in the middle of a backup using
CP Backup (part of DiskTools).

Since I have eliminated all applications and extensions and control
panels from consideration, and since Norton Utilities and DiskTools do
not report any problems with my hard drives, I suspect the Mac itself
is the problem.

Question? Is there any possible software cause I have overlooked?
Could the problem be caused by the Mac itself? If so, where might the
problem be and what should I do next?

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Please respond by email to .

Thank you.

Ran Norton disk doctor -all files OK

I recently upgraded my RAM to 16MB, hoping that I no longer have to use RAM
doubler for Microsoft Excel (version 5.0a). But when I tried to use Excel
without RAM Doubler, I got a message saying that I don't have enough
memory. Why is this? I was able to use Excel when I was using RAM Doubler
with 8 MB of RAM. I'm currently using Performa 6115 CD.

I agree. Would that Apple had the same philosophy about their
operating systems.

Datebook Pro from Now Software has this feature. I like it, too.

I am looking for a program for a teacher who uses Window. She wants to
be able to pull down the menus on a Mac and have them stay down
without having to have the mouse button depressed.

Does anyone know the name of a program that does this?

TIA,

Eudora 1.3.1, Fetch 2.1, TurboGopher 1.08b3 and MacIP 4.02 (telnet/ftp)
will all work with System 6. We have them on a Mac Plus running 6.08 here.

There is even a Web browser called Samba that works under System 6 but it
is very old and limited (no pictures!) and will probably choke on the fancy
HTML in most web pages these days. I think it's filed as 'mac-www' or a
similar name in the info-mac archive.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Speech problem

I have a Performa 630CD, with ample memory and hard disk space. Ever since
I got it about 18 months ago there has been trouble with speech. Some apps
with speech capability work fine, and some have a voice (Marvin) which
drags along very slow and deep, and he sounds vaguely Hispanic, which may
be just the effect of his distorted speech. I can under stand him if the
written text is visible, but not very well otherwise. In a few programs
there is an adjustment for speed and pitch, but changes there do not help.
I understand that in some apps there is a choice of voices, but all I have
is dumbo Marvin.
To be more specific, here are the results of a quick survey I just made:

WORK OK
DISTORTED
Omar Shariff Bridge Eliza

Solitaire of Champions Simple Text
Hangman Guru(from Newer Technologies)
Encarta Tex-Edit+
Groliers MacWorld ezine

Anybody have any idea how I can eliminate this nuisance?

Hi everyone,

Does the Type III extension supplied with batteries for the Duos, which
is needed to upgrade for instance a Duo 230, has to be loaded everytime
the powerbook is booted? Or can it be trashed once the external charger
and the machine are upgraded?

Thanks for any insight.

Subject: Unknown Applications

Hello there!

Just a small technical glitch happening here...When shutting down or
restrarting my 7500, I occasionally and randomly get a dialog box which
states that shut down was aborted because 'application unknown' couldn't
quit.

I initially thought this had something to do with Microsoft Office, as it
began happening sometime around when I installed it. If it is, though,
it's independent of actually using any Microsoft product.

Maybe I'm just looking for excuses...or maybe the Microsoft conspiracy is
infecting all Macs, causing them to hallucinate about phantom applications.

Or maybe it's something different.

Any ideas?
