It is very, VERY doubtful that the database in ClarisWorks will
suffice. FileMaker Pro is an excellent program with LOTS of features. OTOH
ClarisWorks is very lackluster and pales in comparison. You can check out
some reviews from Mac magazines for a list of features in either.
I just receive FileMaker Pro 3.0 and whether or not you need to
upgrade is a matter of your needs, but the fact that it is a viable option
makes me believe that ClarisWorks won't serve your needs.
Of course you currently have access to both so why not see if
ClarisWorks can do what you want.

Apple's web site indicates that these speakers [assuming that these are
part #M4475LL/B] have a subwoofer out jack.

Maybe that's what this is. How strange and sad that neither the manual nor
Apple's tech staff know the answer, however.

BTW, I didn't mean my remark about the manual to be a jab at the original

Does At Ease 2.0.3 log users' time and applications used? If it does I have
not been able to get it to work. I know 2.0 does because I have 2.0 on my
LCII and I print out the log of users, their time connected and the

Subject: [Q] Weird finder draging bug.

Hello all. I have been experiencing a bug lately (well, ever since
I got my real internet connection ) that is a bit anoying. Sometimes,
while I am connected to the internet and try to move a file or
folder in the finder, my machine will lock up. I ussually get
no error message, but last night I got a bomb (no dialog though).

This is not chronic enough to be a major problem, but it strikes just
when I get my confidence back up. The problem occured (apparently)
more often under system 7.5 but stillmore frequently under system 7.5 but still
occurs once in a while
under 7.5.1. Analyzing the system with Techtool v109 states
that the system is ok. It also seems to help that I recently
increased my RAM from 8 to 12 MB.

The problem seems to occur with newly downloaded files, specially
when I try to clean up the window or dram them to an application.

Any help/comments are appreciated.

I have a performa 637 CD, 12 MB RAM, Teleport Gold II modem.

I am trying my best to be able to connect my mac at home to our local mac

I am running Open Transport on a PM 9500, and have installed a copy of

Has anyone found a way to get ARNS to work with OT? Or does anyone else

If in fact the second thing here preceded the first, then there should be a
solution. Error -50 is a parameter error, that is, something you're asking
the Mac to work with doesn't fit into the range of objects it currently
knows about (yes, I know that's a very loose description;-)

The aliases from the IIcx will include numerical reference to that machine,
so that running them on the 7500 is problematic. Appleshare tries to be
pretty flexible, and it knows about your servers, so it will put them up
w/o really resolving the aliases--at least, I think it will go something
like this. But when you try to write new aliases to those volumes so
mounted, you're getting that -50 error, which in this context is
comprehensible.

I would say trash the aliases you made on the IIcx. Call Chooser, select
AppleShare, select and mount your server volumes. Now try Make Alias
again. I think you'll find it works now.

Though if my guesswork is off-target here, you've got a munged system or
HD, or a clashing extension. Just the usual suspects :-)

Subject: communication problems

Hi,
I have a few questions regarding Macs, Internet, Ethernet, Sun
and Silicon Graphics.
The problem we have here is:
We have one PowerMac 8100/100 with system 7.5.1, one PowerMac 8500/120,
two PowerMacs 7500/100, all with system 7.5.2. All of them working well
an communicating to each other by the ethernet port.
Physically connected to the same Hub (D-Link model d-1600) we have
two Silicon Graphics Indigo 2 and one Indy workstation (System=Irix 5.2)
and one Sun SparcStation 20 (System = Solaris 2.2). All communicationg to
each other and to the internet.

The problem is that the Macs do not communicate with the
workstations nor to the internet and vice versa. The Apple
representative told me he does not understand about Silicon Graphics and
Sun. The Silicon Graphics support people had the same answer about
macs. How can I solve this?

Thank you,
Wagner.

Subject: Default Screen Sizes

Greetings!

I wonder if someone could enlighten me on the question of 'default screen
sizes'
with various browsers. I am using a medium sized monitor NEC 3FGx, which allows
me a
rather wide view with Netscape MIEX or Mosaic.

Since I am supporting my own site

which is rather picture intensive, I am concerned how tables containing images
will
be seen by others. I have tried to keep text etc, to work with the browser
width
at
only about 75 to 80% of what I *could* use.

I haven't found a *default* setting in Netscape, the window click button seems
to be
somewhat inconsitent, and am quite puzzled by some admonitions on various lists
to
design the page to fit other people's screen.

The aspect ratio of all monitors would appear to be about the same, with
monitor
size only determining the size of the browser page and not its relative width.
Am I
wrong here?

I know that some people with Window machines, appear to see pages somewhat
differently, and much depends on the font size chosen by the individual user.
How
should I proceed to ensure that my page design fits?

Your comments are most welcome!

Subject: Filemaker/ClarisWorks

I have used FileMaker Pro 2.1 and ClarisWorks 4.0. Here's my observations on
the
database.

If you need to manage _really_ large databases (thousands of records) and
linking/lookup capability, then go with FileMaker. The new version (3.0) is
relational and is a great network tool.

If you are stand alone, work with hundreds of records, then go with
ClarisWorks.
The database can do some superb things. For instance, I have a database that I
use to keep track of my computer consulting/newsletter business. Because of the
flexibility of the new Reports function (which draws on stored searches,
layouts
and sorts) I can quickly pull up screens showing me the results of advertising,
the profit/expense figures for the business overall or of just the newsletter,
mailing labels for newsletter customers, purchases, computers owned by clients,
and more. It is MUCH faster than FileMaker because it is all held in RAM.
However, unless you have a lot of RAM, then you would be stuck if you had a
very
large database, which is the principal reason I would then give FileMaker Pro
the nod.
Plus, with ClarisWorks you have a fully-functional word processor if you need
to
do mail merges. Not to mention a darn good draw environment.

>I want to connect the 20-odd Macs in my computer lab (connected with
>Phonenet into a daisy-chain) to an Internet node that's going to be hooked
>up to Internet with a leased line. How do I go about it?

We've been using a GatorBox from Cayman Systems here to do that for years.
It's been very stable and has lots of other functions. In our case, it's a
gateway between the campus ethernet and a departmental LocalTalk network.
In brief, here's what it lets us do:

(1) All the localtalk Macs are on the Internet. Everything works just like
a straight ethernet connection, only slower. This is great for those people
who just want a POP mail connection to the Mac and not much else.

(2) All the printers on the LocalTalk side show up in the Choosers of Macs
on the ethernet side and vice versa. You can choose which printers appear.

(3) Any printer on the LocalTalk network can be advertised as a standard
lpq Unix style printer via the GatorBox so PC's and Unix machines can print
to it.

(4) It gives NFS to AFS file sharing so that Unix NFS volumes from the
ethernet can be mounted via the Chooser.

>need) and av card option.

The 52xx and 62xx series use the same logic board, so they're identical=
except that the 52xx series has the monitor built into the computer case. =
Variants within each line will differ in the set of software included, hard=
drive capacity, and MPEG and/or TV/Video System cards which are included in=
some models. 62xx series also vary in whether or not they include a monitor.

All 52xx series should have the same monitor, and it's probably the same=
tube as the separate 15-inch multi-scan monitor that's included with some=
of the 62xx series.

According to the spec sheets I have, the 5200CD and 5215CD differ in the=
hard drive (800Mb vs. 1Gb) and in the set of software included.

I was considering a 52xx or 62xx as my next Mac until I learned that the PPC=
603 is _slower_ than a 601. As a result, the 52xx and 62xx with a 75MHz=
603 is about the same speed as the original bottom-end 6100 with a 60MHz=
601 processor. The 7200, in contrast, has a 601 cpu at either 75MHz or=
90MHz, _and_ includes the new-and-improved 680x0 emulator so that it can=
run old 680x0 programs significantly faster than the 52xx/62xx.

Other differences between the 52xx/62xx and 7200:

7200 has 4 DIMM slots; the 52xx/62xx has 2 72-pin SIMM slots.

7200 VRAM can be expanded to 2Mb (75MHz version) or 4Mb (90MHz), versus the=
52xx/62xx's fixed size of 1Mb. This allows higher resolutions & more color=
s.

7200 has 3 PCI slots. 52xx/62xx has 1 PDS slot, 1 comm slot, and 1 Video sl=
ot.

PCI is fairly new to the Mac, so it may be several months before TV/Video=
and AV cards are available for the 7200.

7200 also has Ethernet networking built in, and doesn't include any software=
other than MacOS and eWorld.

A.

Before you buy one of this models, you'd better consult with someboby that
have
already used these models. I bought two Performa 5200CD (12 Mg Ram) and it
really sucks. It crashed frequently and there is problem with loading ClipArt
picture with Mic. PowerPoint. I am using Mic. Office 6.0 and it takes about
1:15
minutes to open Excel. Now I am using Ram Doubler to speed up the process. In
addition, Macintosh has sent me a disk to check my hard drive. It is mentioned
that one of every 1000 computers has problem with their hard drives and it is
needed to be replaced.

No, it won't. The Plus's ROMs are not compatible with the high-density
drive. The *only* way I ever heard of to add an HD drive to a Plus was
to purchase an external unit made by a company called Applied
Engineering. This box contained its own built-in ROMs as well as

itself is now defunct (anyone know for sure?) so I don't even know

invest more in the drive than the computer is probably worth;)).

Well, yes and no: it works LIKE a regular modem, but cannot communicate

manufacturers make 'em too), but they're very pricey (=B1$800) and I haven't
seen any that go faster than 14.4kbps.

You'd think this would be a good-selling item.

Believe me, though, once you go ISDN, you won't ever want to use a POTS

I know why you're asking, a clean install of the system does take time.
But--after making a few other assumptions--that's probably the fix...

The main assumption is that the aliases, or applets you've got in the
Startup Items folder _aren't_ broken. Do try replacing them all from
originals anyway (floppies, in the case of applets, Make Alias on the
aliased applications in the case of the aliases). But it is a reasonable
assumption, since it's unlikely, though conceivable, that they all broke at
once.

Another assumption would be that you have not started running some new and
powerful extension just before this happened. In that case a clean install
of the system is merely going to put you back where you were. If you've
just begun running something called HD Quadrupler deinstall it--and
see if the problem goes away.

Yet another assumption is that your HD isn't munged in some way. Are your
disk drivers up to date? (Siverlining 5.6.6, Hard Disk Toolkit 1.8, occur
to one; if you've a system manager it's worth checking this point with
her.) Have you checked the drive with Disk First Aid or Norton 3.x
recently? A malfunctional drive can show up as a system problem quite
readily (which can be a nuisance when you've done a clean system install at
3 AM ;-)

Good luck with it, and tell us all how you get on!

I have 2 questions.

(1) Is it really true that these fonts are particularly legible on screen?

If the answer to (1) is yes, then

(2) What will happen if I try to use them in a pdf file? Will I lose the

Please respond if you have a view about (1), even if you don't about (2).

I think it's always better to connect with PPP first, then launch your
Internet application(s). I use FreePPP 1.0.5, and set it to "Disable Auto
Connect" anyway to prevent spurious connection attempts when I'm offline.
In other words, "it's not a bug, it's a feature."

I'll bet you still have Netscape configured to automatically connect to
the Netscape home page on launch; you could probably avoid the issue by
setting your Netscape prefs to display a blank page, or, as I do, an HTML
file on my hard disk that contains links to the URLs I visit daily.
Alternatively, if you're looking for one-button convenience, get PPPop
and tell it to launch Netscape as soon as the connection is established.

I've never used "Expresso", but...
You're a week late. Through last Friday CE Software was offering WebArranger
free. It is an AWESOME powerful PIM. If you want an easy search function, its
FIND function is very fast, and you can set a popup menu with any kind of quick
sort and search you like. Its taken over my life - the ToDo function is
excellent, the contact manager is excellent, alarms are excellent, the calendar
is excellent (not as many bells and whistles as some, but powerful sorting and
viewing options). And you can build as many other data types, note types, etc.
as you can imagine. I very, very strongly endorse it - an excellent program.
The only negative (nothing's perfect) is that it has a steep learning curve at
first - it took me an hour or so to figure out what was going on. But once I
understood the interface I kept discovering neat new features.

And I forgot to mention that it has great capabilities for cataloging and
tracking internet sites - its got some pretty powerful features on that side,
too (hence the name WEBarranger).

Like I said, CE was giving it away free thru last Friday. They may still
have some kind of evaluation copies available at
http://www.cesoft.com/
but if not, I think you can order it there for around 80 bucks - its worth
every penny.

Obligatory disclaimer: don't work for 'em, never have, noone in my family has,
etc. Just think this was the best freebie ever offered on the net.

Bill, it does sound like defective hardware, or at the least defective
drivers (my HDT is at version 1.8 now, though that's the full kit). But
one thing might be worth trying. Ground yourself, open up the PowerWave,
and gently remove the power and SCSI cables from the internal HD. Just
hold them for a moment and mutter a prayer. Now gently but firmly plug
them in again. In particular note that the SCSI cable is seated properly.

You'd be surprised, but this sometimes works (even w/o the prayer;-) It
does sound as if the problem is a flakey SCSI bus, and the cabling, inside
and out, is a vital part of this. Oh, and it's worth only using a good
quality external SCSI cable too. I'm sure you've checked the SCSI
connection on the Syquest--try swopping that cable for another after you've
pulled/reseated the internal drive cables; and then restart.

(One desparate night--I have lots of these--I fixed a problem like this by
swopping the _internal_ SCSI cable for another... and two weeks of woe went
away!)

With a bit of luck one of these steps will fix things. If not I think I'd
have the whole setup looked at by the dealer, as it might be a flakey SCSI
controller chip...

Good luck!

I have a DeskWriter 600 with a serial connection to a PPC 7200. I have

become just long strings of letters, some lines miss part of the dots
need to form the letters (not a bad cartridge as something prints, just
not the right something). It is not the printer nor the cable as I have
swapped both and still have the problem.

Subject: speed of ppp connection

I recently posted a query concerning correct init strings with my Global
Village Platinum because I was experiencing very slow throughput with
Netscape and Fetch. I was very pleased with all the helpful responses.
After some experimenting and thinking about my problem, I wondered, since
when I used kermit with Versaterm the speed was about right, whether the
problem was that my 1988 Mac II could not process the incoming
information fast enough. Sure enough. I changed the speed to 19.2 kb,
turned off compression and error correction, and I'm back to an
acceptable level.

I give Apple lots and lots of credit. This Mac II, which I purchased in
1988 with 5 meg ram, an 80 MB internal, is one heck of a machine to be
able to deal with 1996 computing in a satisfactory manner. What a pity
that Apple has done so poorly in the consumer market in comparison with
Windows based machines.
I won't dump it. When its days are done it will graze in a
serene pasture --- no trip to the glue factory (or its computer equivalent).

That day will inevitably come soon, especially with youngsters needing it.
Anybody have strong opinions comparing the Performa 6300CD vs PPC 7500
with equivalent configurations? I'd like to make the kind of choice
which will see me through another 8 (dreaming?) good computing years with
a great Mac.

Thanks.
