This is the degaussing button. Pressing this button won't do any harm to
your monitor, and may even do some good.

I'll leave it to someone else to explain the specific technical details,
but what this basically does is recalibrate the monitor's magnetic
characteristics.

Here's an example. Put a fairly weak magnet close to your monitor [but not
for very long; just a second or two]. See how the screen got all
distorted? Degaussing can fix that sort of thing.

I've got no idea what that is. It's not mentioned in the speakers' manual?

Thanks to all who replied by mail to my query!

Alert readers will have spotted Joshua Colglazier's posting
on 6th February, placing the Code39barcode font in the
archive as /info-mac/font/ps/code-39-barcode.hqx; 14K

This font is superb, meets my requirements exactly, and you
can't beat the price!

If anyone succeeds in reaching the author, Rob Elliot, please
pass his new address to me.

Subject: [Q] Netscape 2.0 and MacPPP bug.

Greetings all. I downloaded Netscape 2.0 and have had a
weird problem that I hope some of you can shed some light
on. When I launch Netscape, the MacPPP 'connecting...'
window comes up, I hear my modem connect to my ISP but
(I hear my ISP's modem pick-up) but I do not hear the
screeching that indicates a connection is
being made, the connection then drops (I get the 'If you'd
like to make a call' message). If I connect directly
using the apple Internet dialer first, I can open Netscape
and use it w/o problems. I removed Netscape 2.0 and went back to
1.12 and everything works fine now.

I also experienced the same weird problem while trying to
conect from some other applicationa such as TurboGopher. I do not
think the problem is my ISP, since I got a 10 out of 10 connections
while dialing their number.

Any help is appreciated.

Subject: Another MS Word question

Greetings all,

Recent queries & discussions about Word 5.1 & 6 have reminded me of a question
I've been meaning to ask for a while now. After my recent upgrade to 5.1a I am
perfectly happy with my WP and have no desire to obtain or use Word 6. However,
I have a requirement to be able to read & modify Word 6 format files, which I
receive on disk and as e-mail attachments.

I recall hearing something (way back when the evil nature of Word 6 for Mac was
first being exposed) about a utility to permit Word 5.1 users to open and read
Word 6 files. Where/how can this utility be obtained? Is it just a read-only
device, or does it permit Word 6 files to be edited and/or saved in 5.1
format?
TIA for you assistance.

To which John Antolak replied:

>I hate to nitpick, but SCSI 0 is usually the internal drive, and SCSI 7 is
>reserved for the Mac CPU (at least on all of the Macs I've seen).

Mel was wrong; John was right. On all Macs with internal hard drives
the Mac is SCSI ID 7, the internal drive is SCSI ID 0. When there is
an internal CD-ROM drive it is usually SCSI ID 3.

Mel also wrote:

> To make the mac skip looking at ID 7 and go right to the highest

and also:

> So the solution to getting the mac to boot from an external volume is

That is incorrect. The mouse button down is a hold over since the
early Macs. The Mac looks first for a boot device in the internal
floppy drive; if it finds a bootable floppy it will boot off it
(unless another device was selected in the Startup Disk control
panel). However, if the mouse button is held down, the floppy will be
ejected even if it holds a valid system, and the Mac will proceed to
look for another boot device. (And you don't have to take my word for
this. Just take a bootable floppy and test this on any Mac.)

As Wayne C. Morris and Lawrence Rugolo have pointed out, the correct
procedure to bypass temporarily the internal drive is to hold down the
Command-Option-Shift-Delete combination at boot time. The Mac will
skip the internal hard drive (or the device set in the Startup Disk
control panel) and it will try the next device, starting with the
highest SCSI ID number.

Yikes! You guys are brutally correct. I must be sleepwalking these days.
Sigh...

I at least was correct in the priority order (just double-checked checked
that) in that the remaining scsci devices will be scanned in order from
highest ID (6 for an external device) on down. At least that's the way my
mac works and that's also what it says in my extremely old Jasmine guide to
scsi hard drives. :-) I think I should have made a point of reading the
later bit in the guide about using cmd-opt-shift-del before replying....

Subject: Can't make alias of network drives, error type -50

I cannot make alias of network drives on my 7500/100 running 7.5.2. Every
time I try, I get an error message saying something like cannot make alias
because of error type -50. This only happens to network drives. Local drives
are OK.

When opening an alias for network drives (aliases were made on a IIcx, which
was replaced recently by the 7500), I first got an error message saying cannot
find the drive. I clicked on the OK button then the drive appeared on the
desktop. This happens everytime I try to open an alias for network drives.

Anybody has a clue what could cause this? Thanx.

Just set the decimal separator in the Numbers control panel to comma. You
should be OK. Here's what happens:

Excel will pick up on this and react by doing just what you ask, i.e.
substituting semi-colons for commas in formulae. It will also give you a
very annoying reminder every time you start it to the effect that you
have been foolish enough to use the correct number formatting for the
Netherlands (and Botswana, and most of the non-Anglo-Saxon world...) :-)

FileMaker is able to use semi-colons as item separators anyway
(little-known fact). Just go ahead and use them (you _must_ use them if
you have the Numbers decimal separator set to comma).

Mea culpa. There was something I left out. In Word 5, if you have the
Symbol tool in the Word Commands folder, then cmd-opt-Q will invoke
it. But if the Symbol tool is not in the Word Commands folder when
Word is launched, then cmd-opt-Q will work as described (which is the way it
worked in Word 4).

Subject: Extension Conflict

I would like to clarify a message I posted several days ago. The message
stated:

>I have a PowerBook 5300c and just installed the latest system update to System
>7.5.2 and System Enabler 1.2.1. After this Word 6.0.1 started crashing
whenever
>Save As... was selected and frequently when a file was opened.
>
>I tracked the problem down to a conflict between the extension "Office 4.2x
>Update for Power Mac" and the new system software.[snip]

After some assistance from a source within Microsoft, it was determined that I
was using version 1.0 of the extension. Version 1.0.1 has been out for several
months and does not seem to have the problem. It does seem that the problem
with
version 1.0 is more severe under the updated System 7.5.2 than under un-updated
system.

It was also pointed out to me that there are also only two reasons to be using
the "Office 4.2x Update for Power Mac" extension. For the record, they are:

1) It prevents a possible crash in Word or Excel when using QuickDraw GX
version
1.0 through version 1.12. (Using version 1.13 is recommended -- you don't get
the crash in Word or Excel and it is much more stable).

2) It prevents a possible crash or Type 11 hang if both of the following
occur:
A) Using a PowerMac. (This is mostly exhibited on machines with 16 or less MB
of
RAM and VM being turned on, although it can happen with more RAM, RAM Doubler,
or VM off.)
B) Launching or quitting Word after the first time or launching another native
language program after quitting Word.

Right now Word seems stable on the PowerBook 5300c with 16 Mbytes RAM and
RAMDoubler without QuickDraw GX and without the extension.

Subject: Filemaker/ClarisWorks

Dear Info-Mac Info-Helpers,

I have been using FileMaker Pro 2.1v.3, which I had been planning to upgrade.
However my *very* new PowerWave came with ClarisWorks installed, which does
include a database program. I haven't had the time yet to explore the
ClarisWorks database (as some of you know, I've been away--working in a
non-Mac environment for almost a month).

I'd very much appreciate advice from those of you with experience &/or
knowledge of both the ClarisWorks database & FileMaker Pro 3.0 as to whether
it's necessary--or even advisable--to upgrade FileMaker, i.e., whether the
new ClarisWorks database will do essentially the same things as the new
FileMaker. If not, any differences you point out will help me make my
decision as, like many other FileMaker users, I don't need all its "bells &
whistles." I do know that FileMaker Pro 3.0 is a relational database--but
what else?

After my purchase of a new Mac, I need to be very careful of software
expenditures, or I'll wind up in the poorhouse. ;-)

Many TIA,
Toby Moore

Subject: HP & 16/600 & IP wierdness [Q]

Advice please:

We have suddenly discovered that several of our Apple LaserWriter 16/600's
have developed IP addresses (like catching the flu). At this site, on this
particular LAN, three or more of them have all adopted the same IP address
[XXX.YYY.193.21; where XXX.YYY.193 is one of the active IP networks at this
site].

Having multiple devices with the same IP address wasn't causing any
problems because all users print via AppleTalk --- until this last week. We
started trying to configure an HP LaserJet 4M+ to act as a printer for
some unix boxes. So we gave it an IP address --- XXX.YYY.193.21. But it
refused to work; keep reporting "Duplicate IP Address" problems.

Tracked the duplicates down the the LaserWriter 16/600s --- only, we don't
know why or when they picked up that address. I generally configure them
with both IP and IPX on, in case we do need it some day, but do not
actively use it at all. Testing seems to show that running the HP Printer
Configuration Utility (from a Mac) is what is turning it on int the 16/600s
--- which seems quite weird.

Anyone else seen this?
Anyone have any ideas what it's about?

Reply directly to me, please (avoid cross-listing nightmares).

The 52xx and 62xx series use the same logic board, so they're identical=
except that the 52xx series has the monitor built into the computer case. =
Variants within each line will differ in the set of software included, hard=
drive capacity, and MPEG and/or TV/Video System cards which are included in=
some models. 62xx series also vary in whether or not they include a monito=
r.

All 52xx series should have the same monitor, and it's probably the same=
tube as the separate 15-inch multi-scan monitor that's included with some=
of the 62xx series.

According to the spec sheets I have, the 5200CD and 5215CD differ in the=
hard drive (800Mb vs. 1Gb) and in the set of software included.

I was considering a 52xx or 62xx as my next Mac until I learned that the PPC=
603 is _slower_ than a 601. As a result, the 52xx and 62xx with a 75MHz=
603 is about the same speed as the original bottom-end 6100 with a 60MHz=
601 processor. The 7200, in contrast, has a 601 cpu at either 75MHz or=
90MHz, _and_ includes the new-and-improved 680x0 emulator so that it can=
run old 680x0 programs significantly faster than the 52xx/62xx.

Other differences between the 52xx/62xx and 7200:

7200 has 4 DIMM slots; the 52xx/62xx has 2 72-pin SIMM slots.

7200 VRAM can be expanded to 2Mb (75MHz version) or 4Mb (90MHz), versus the=
52xx/62xx's fixed size of 1Mb. This allows higher resolutions & more color=
s.

7200 has 3 PCI slots. 52xx/62xx has 1 PDS slot, 1 comm slot, and 1 Video sl=
ot.

PCI is fairly new to the Mac, so it may be several months before TV/Video=
and AV cards are available for the 7200.

7200 also has Ethernet networking built in, and doesn't include any software=
other than MacOS and eWorld.

Subject: LAT tool 1.3.2 and system 7.5.2

Greeting all.

A few days ago, I posted an enquiry regarding Versterm Pro
(v 5.0.4) and its incompatibility with system 7.5.2 (on the
new PCI macs, 8500 to be precise). Thanks to those that replied.

To overcome the problem, you need to get LAT tool v 1.3.2,
it works very well.

LAT tool can be obtained from DEC, it is available to registered
users of Versaterm Pro (DEC has an agreement with Symergy) and
users of Pathworks (from DEC).

Users of Versaterm should call Synergy at 1-610-779-0522, they will
refer
you to DEC.

Users of Pathworks may call DEC at 1-800-493-5111.

I am sorry I can not upload the update, but DEC requested that I do not
do
so, to please call them. Also, please do not request me to mail you a

Using a IISP and an 8500, the only way I could get it to work reliably
was to use an 'Active Terminator' purchased from APS Technologies.
All of my scanning problems immediately disappeared as soon as I
installed it.
Microtek tech support is a contradiction in terms. Trying to cantact
them is a most frustrating experience.

Subject: Modern Memory Manager (was: Type 1 Error)

I recently reported to this list a problem about AppleScript's Automated
Tasks and Type 1 errors. The problem was finally solved by doing a System
clean install and updating Apple Menu Options to version 1.0.2, as
suggested by many of the members that answered me. Following the same
suggestions, I turned Modern Memory Manager on. Results: type 11 error when
launching Apple Video Player and Photoshop 3.0 running out of RAM while
performing operations that never caused trouble before. I turned Modern
Memory Manager off, restarted my Mac and everything worked perfectly. I
knew that Modern Memory Manager could cause problems with old applications,
but I don't think Apple Video Player and Photoshop 3.0 (both PPC native)
can fit in this category. Could anybody please tell what's supposed to be
the use of Modern Memory Manager? Am I missing something if I leave it
permanently off? Has anybody experienced the same problems? Are they going
to be solved with System 7.5.3? I have a Performa 6300 with 16 Mb of RAM,
System 7.5.1.

I recently purchased the "Microsoft Academic Bundle" of Word 5.1a & Excel 4.0
>From Mac Sale International. On their web page
, they advertise it for $79.00, but that is the "cash discount"
price. I'm sure everyone on this forum has experienced or heard enough mail
order horror stories to know that you should _always_ use your credit card to
preserve your rights under the Fair Credit Act. Anyway, the actual price with
S&H came to just over $90.00 for both programs on 3.5" floppy with what appears
to be the identical type of manuals that came with the MS Office I have at
work.
It took about a week to arrive via UPS.

Just one caveat: I am very happy with my software purchase, but judging from
the
fine print in Mac Sale's ads in the back of MacWeek, MacWorld, etc., I would be
very reluctant to order a hardware product from this company. (Returns at
discretion of management/15% restocking fee.) Their number is (800) 729-7031.
Hope this information helps.

My PB520c is set to sleep "Never", but goes to sleep on its own. I
firmly believe that it is related to movement of the computer. APPL-SOS
suggested I do a clean install, but when I booted up with Disk Tools and
moved the computer, it went to sleep again, so I guess a clean install
won't serve any purpose!

I intend to run again with Disk Tools and see if it will go to sleep
as before and then try SOS again, but any suggestions or

Subject: PowerWave 120 SCSI problems

Dear infomaccers,
I have a new PowerWave 120 (system 7.5.2, PPC604, PCI bus) and I have one
problem that I have yet to overcome. I own a two year old SyQuest drive
(105 MB) which is giving me fits. It is causing problems with the computer
booting normally. Once in a while, the computer won't boot at all.
Sometimes I get the diskette symbol with the question mark. Sometimes I get
nothing. No Sad Mac face, no diskette symbol, no nothing. When it does
start booting normally, the HDT toolkit control panel icon takes a long
time (10 or more seconds) to show up during the 'march of icons'. When it
does show up, sometimes it shows the SCSI ID number (4) and sometimes not.
Usually if the machine does not boot on the first attempt, I can get it to
boot by hitting the restart button. Another symptom: I noticed that when I
have the drive plugged in to the computer and turned on (but with the
computer off), the little lite on the front of the drive flickers yellow.
It never did that with my Quadra. I never had any trouble with the drive
when I used it with my Quadra.
More facts, if they help you solve the problem. The version of HD toolkit
shown on the extension and control panel is 1.7.5. I'm not sure what
version of HD toolkit I had on the Quadra, but the drive came with HD
toolkit PE. The new computer also came with HD toolkit PE. I turn on my
drive (and other peripherals such as modem and printer) before I turn on my
computer. A readme file that came with the computer indicated that all SCSI
peripherals had to be powered on to avoid potential 'system errors' prior
to booting the computer. The SyQuest drive is set to ID #4. The drive has a
gray terminator plug in it. There are currently no other SCSI devices
attached. I do not have SCSI manager in my extensions folder. Should I?
Sometimes even if the machine boots normally, the Syquest drive will not
mount, either automatically or with HD toolkit prober.
I suspect this has something to do with drivers, but what to do next?
Any ideas? potential solutions?
TIA,
Bill

Didn't your monitor come with a manual? It's the degauss switch. Simply=
put, it degausses (or demagnetizes) the monitor. According to my manual,=
the main reason to use it is if the color is distorted on parts of the=
screen -- for example, a slightly bluish patch on what should be a solid=
red field. This is more likely if the monitor has been on a long time or=
has been moved while it was on.

Again, didn't you get an instruction booklet? It certainly ought to tell=

Subject: Using UK Mac in Denmark?

A friend of mine is about to buy her first Mac, a PowerMac 7200/75 or maybe
a Performa 5200CD or 6200CD.

She's moving to Copenhagen in March/April, and we've heard that prices are
much higher there than here in the UK (where after tax you'd pay just under
$1,500 for the 7200/75, 8/500meg, no CD, CPU only).

She's tempted to buy a UK Mac and take it to Denmark, but is concerned
there might be compatability problems. Will the power supply match? Will
she need a Danish version of the System software? What about lack of Danish
character keys? She's bilingual and will be producing Quark etc documents
in both languages.

Would it be a good idea to buy a UK Mac but a Danish keyboard?

If anyone's taken a Mac abroad and knows what the issues are, we'd be glad
to hear about it.

TIA.

Subject: Power Computing Corporation Sucks

Hi,
I made the mistake of ordering a PowerWave CPU and a Sony monitor directly
>From the Power Computing Corporation in Austin, TX. The CPU arrived two
weeks after I placed the order, but the monitor somehow got left off the
shipping list (even tho they charged my credit card for the whole thing). I
have now waited for 18 days for the monitor to arrive, having talked to a
dozen people at PPC during this time, including the guy who took my order
initially, people from sales and customer service, and the secretary to the
president who assured me that she would see to it that the monitor be sent at
highest priority. That was five days ago.

Has anyone else had similar problems with these Texas folks? Does anyone
have any suggestions as to how I might get them to send me the monitor?

Thanks for listening.

Hi Larry,

I'm truly surprised that you had *any* problem with PPC. My PowerWave arrived
sooner than expected, complete with the customization ordered. I, as well as
friends who have ordered from PPC, have been delighted with their service,
including tech support (no telephone trees & a real live knowledgable person
answers promptly). When I ordered, the rep told me the Sony monitor was out
of stock & suggested I might want to order it elsewhere, rather than wait. So
I ordered it from MacZone (same price), which did have it in stock. Perhaps
it is out of stock again/still. If so, you can cancel your order, get a
credit to your card, & order the Sony monitor elsewhere.

PPC ships via FedEx, & the problem may lie there. FedEx neither picks up nor
delivers on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays, & their hours seem limited. I
have had delayed deliveries from FedEx. Also, someone has to sign for receipt
of the monitor, & if no one is available to do so, the delivery person is
supposed to leave a form telling the recipient what to do to get delivery.
The form, in my case, is always stuck on the outside door (although there is
an interior door) where any breeze can blow it away--& has. PCC will have a
FedEx delivery number, if it has indeed sent your monitor, & you can call
FedEx to find the whereabouts of your monitor, if the problem is at the FedEx
end.

I do hope that by now you have recieved your much delayed monitor. When you
get your PowerWave up & running you'll love it!!

I have no connection with PCC, other than as an *extremely* satisfied
customer.

HTH,
Toby Moore
