Presenting EXERCISE LOG for the Macintosh (Hypercard).
Current version: 1.24a (15 February 1996).

By Maurits van der Veen.

General description follows feature/bug fix list.

This log is shareware! Shareware fee is $8.

General description
===================

Exercise Log is a Hypercard-based activities log that lets you store
information about each workout you do in an unlimited number of sports.
It offers an attractive and useful middle ground between paper-based logs
(in which you have to do all the tallying, etc. yourself) and spread-sheet
models (which tend to be too rigid for free-form information entry).

The log boasts many other features. A detailed (and printable) Help section
explains all options and features.

The log requires Hypercard 2.0 or above, and will run best in 2.1 or above
It uses the Courier, Geneva, Times and Palatino fonts,
and has been tested on most common setups.

MPW Technicolor is an easily-installed patch to MPW which
provides simple PowerMac-and-68k-native syntax coloring.

New in version 0.9.5:
* New and updated keyword sets: Perl, PPCAsm, SOM IDL,
and Java.
* Stability. Shouldn't cause crashes.
* Speed. Should be significantly faster than previous
releases.

This will probably be the last significant release of MPW
Technicolor in hack form.

MPW Technicolour 0.9 features:
* CodeWarrior-style keyword colorizing
* configurable, resource-based keyword sets
* Out-of-the-box support for:
- C
- C++
- Pascal
- Fortran
- Rez
- Inform
- Java

Scraps, the Wonder Diary and Scrapbook!
Version 1.0
Shareware fee requested = $19.95 (comparable products on market cost
$64.95 on up)

Greetings,
I am submitting this software as shareware to you. I own or have licenses
to distribute this software legally. It is compressed in Compact Pro.

What is Scraps?
Below is the press release we are issuing to MacUser, MacWorld, MacHome
Journal, and other magazines (as well as regular media magazines). While
it is rather long, it does give you an detailed explanation of our
product. Thanks very much!
----------
Imagine the year is 2099, and little Johnny is pestering his mom to look
at the family scrapbook and diary on the computer again. Moments later,
to Johnny's delight, Great-great Grandma and Grandpa spring to life in
video clips, audio messages, and photographs! It's all possible with
"Scraps, the Wonder Diary!" The newly released program lets a family or
individual create multimedia scrapbooks and diaries complete with color
or black & white photographs, audio such as voice messages and music,
text narration, even video clips, and store them all on CD-ROM to
be reminisced over decades later. Viewers using "Scraps" will see
'pages' filled with fond memories or family records of special events,
just like traditional scrapbooks and diaries -- minus the must and
mildew. A full range of features also comes with the inexpensive program,
including powerful searching capabilities which lets viewers quickly
search for any name or word entered; automatic sorting by date, spell
checking so Aunt Ezmeralda's name is always spelled right; automatic
save as you type; automatic start-up so you're reminded to write
something every day; and of course, password protection to keep
prying eyes out. And for those of you with embarrassing family members,
you can even hit a few keys and delete them forever from your diary!

If you highlight all 14 parts within Eudora and chose "Save As..." they will
be saved to your disk as a single file. Within the message there sound be
some line which mentions what format it's saved in, .hqx or .uu are the most
likely. StuffIt Expander may be able to decode the resulting file. If not,
try the programs "uuUndo" or "Base64".

SoundApp will play and convert .wav files to Mac sound files, snd resources,
and a couple other options, AIFF, I think.

Subject: [Q] AudioVision/GeoPort/MegaPhone

I have a problem getting my MegaPhone speakerphone software working with
my AudioVision 14 display after upgrading the ~AudioVision 1.0.2
extension to AppleVision 1.0.2. Please advise!

I have an Apple AudioVision 14" display attached to the high-density
monitor port on the motherboard of my Power Mac 8100/80AV 24/1G. (I also
have an Apple Multiple Scan 17 display attached to the standard monitor
port on the AV card). I have an Apple GeoPort Telecom Adapter attached to
the modem port. I run Express Modem 2.3.2 and MegaPhone 1.0.2 software,
which make the GeoPort and AudioVision work together to give me a
hands-free speakerphone.

Until yesterday I had an extension called ~AudioVision (version 1.0.2)
installed. _If_ it loaded correctly at startup time -- it sometimes did
not -- it added a divider and an "AudioVision options" menu item to the
popup menu in the Sound control panel (version 3.2 if memory serves).
Selecting this menu item displayed a pane with various options concerning
the behaviour of the display's built-in mike and speakers. Using these
options and with the "Sound In" options set to source: CD drive and
playthrough: on, MegaPhone would intelligently interrupt my audio CDs
whenever it was in speakerphone mode, switch the speaker's input source
to the phone line so I could hear my caller, and switch the "Sound In"
source to the display's built-in mike so I could be heard at the other
end of the phone line. At the end of the call, MegaPhone would correctly
reset everything and the CD would resume playing over the speakers. Such
coolness and so little hassle to set up -- only on the Mac!

Because of the problem with ~AudioVision often not loading correctly, I
looked around online and found AppleVision (as distinct from
AudioVision), also at rev 1.0.2. This was documented as being the latest
software for the AudioVision 14 display, optimised in some fashion for
System 7.5 and later. (I'm running 7.5.1). The same docs said that the
~AudioVision extension was not supported on my model and system. I
installed AppleVision 1.0.2, foolishly not backing up the ~AudioVision
extension -- I was so sure that I would never want to go back to it.
Well, of course there's a problem.

The old ~AudioVision extension was deleted by the AppleVision installer.
The extra items no longer appear in the Sound control panel. Instead,
there's now a control panel called AppleVision Setup. This correctly
identifies the display and offers a completely new, different and
apparently diminished set of configuration options for the AudioVision
14. And MegaPhone no longer switches the mike on automatically in
speakerphone mode! It does switch the speaker source to the phone line,
so I can hear the person on the other end of the line, but they can't
hear me! I have to manually open the Sound control panel and switch the
"Sound In" source to the display's built-in mike, make/answer the call,
then manually switch everything back -- completely impractical,
especially for answering calls. Help!

Does any have any experience using the Thrustmaster FCS joystick w/
Marathon 1 or 2? I purchased a Thrustmaster/Marathon 2 bundle from

Thrustmaster or even Bungie in solving the problem. The Thrustmaster
works great w/ programs like Dark Forces and Rebel Assault II that have

An extended warranty? For an Apple Macintosh? You may have trouble
_years_ down the line, but I think it'd be a cold day in hell when your Mac
gives you real hardware problems early enough in its long life to still be
covered by some warranty. Now if you were talking about a Packard Hell...

In my opinion, extended warranties are not worth the cost.

I've never bothered to buy extended warranties for the various Apple=
computers that I've owned. In over 12 years I've experienced only two=
Apple equipment failures. The first was an SE that died less than a week=
after purchase -- obviously still under warranty and fixed for free. The=
second was a 13" RGB monitor, out of warranty, but the problem turned out=
to be caused by a known defect and was repaired for free.

If these repairs hadn't been free, I'd still have paid a lot less for the=
repairs than I could have spent on extended warranties for all the Apple=
hardware I've owned. This also applies to all the VCRs, TV, stereos, etc.=
I've owned -- the cost of extended warranties would've been a lot more than=
I've ever spent on repairs.

There's a very good reason for this: Manufacturers don't want to lose=
money. If they calculate that for every 100 customers they'll have to make=
$10,000 worth of repairs during the extended warranty period, then they'll=
make damned sure that they collect _at least_ $10,000 altogether, or $100=
apiece, from those 100 customers for the extended warranties. A few of=
those customers may end up needing $1000 worth of repairs; most of them=
won't need any repairs at all.

Of course there is always the remote chance that your hardware may crash=
bigtime after the basic warranty expires, and may require a lot of $$$ to=
repair. You have to decide for yourself: How hard would a huge unexpected=
repair bill hurt you? Is it worthwhile to pay $200 a year for repairs you=
might never need, to protect your wallet from the remote possibility that=
you might need a lot more than $200 worth of repairs?

Command-Option-Shift-Delete. It will skip the internal hard drive and try the
external hard drives, starting with the highest SCSI ID number.

I just tried it myself; it skipped the internal drive and booted from my ZIP
disk just fine. Just turn on/restart your Mac, insert the ZIP disk, and hold
those four keys down until you see the smiling Mac icon.

I found the info in the Macintosh Reference manual that came with System 7;
there are a few pages about the scanning order it follows when looking for a
startup disk.

By default, the mac will look to scsi ID 7 (the internal drive) for a
startup volume. If that drive is not suitable, it then looks to ID 6, then
ID 5 and so on, with scsi ID 0 having the lowest priority.

To make the mac skip looking at ID 7 and go right to the highest priority
external drive hold the mouse button down during startup. Make sure the
SCSI ID of the ZIP drive ( or whatever startup device you want to use) is
set to a higher number (6 is sure thing) than any other bootable device on
the chain.

Christopher,

You almost have to be a contortionist or have three hands to do this, but you
press the combination of Command-Option-Shift-Delete keys while turning the
computer on. This skips over the internal drive to the next drive found with
a system folder on it.

ICeTEe that shipped with it added support for e-mail addresses.

Any support for /info-mac/ forms comes from a given digest-reader.

That's not going to help. =)

If you use NewsWatcher, which works independently of ICeTEe, get
NetSnagger by Ron Morehead . It uses Drag & Drop,
which *does* work with NewsWatcher.

If you use ICeTEe, or any recent CWASTE-based application, mail me at
. I'm about to release a free IC override
component which beefs up IC's URL parsing significantly. Indicate whether
you wish to be beta-tester, bundle the component with your application, or
simply wish to be notified when it's released.

If your favorite application does not support ICeTEe or IC at all, it can
be added in about 15 minutes of coding and testing time. Ask the author to
download the IC developer's kit. =)

Cheers,
Eric (co-author of the IC override component architecture)

Subject: Netscape vs. Inline GIFs

I've got Netscape 2.0.

I want to attach GIF files to my mail and have them appear inline (i.e.,
at the end of the message).

The images arrive with a strip of black across the bottom. Opening them
in PShop gives a (-039) "Unexpected End of File" error.

I've tried MPack and JPEGView as Helpers, and switched from "MIME" to
"Enable 8-bit" (and all combinations thereof).

(I've also looked through the five Net books I've got, and checked
Netscape's online help.)

Help? TIA!

Subject: New Extension Conflict

It gets worse:

I've a PowerMac 7200/90 with vanilla System 7.5.2. When I installed
'Office 4.2x Update for Power Mac', Excel 5 got rather upset! Virtually
all my dates came up as ####'s, as if the field width was too small.

Removing the Update restored proper operation.

I guess I'll have to live with the occasional Type 11 bomb...

Any ideas?

________________________________________________________________________
Forwarded message from Eric Schweitzer:
I tracked the problem down to a conflict between the extension "Office 4.2x
Update for Power Mac" and the new system software. (Don't ask how long this
took!) It seems that the new system software corrects the same problem that
Office Update does and they conflict. Everything seems to work fine if Office
Update is disabled.

My suspicion is that when System Update 2.0 is released (soon, I hope), it will
have the correction and the Office Update extension will not only not be
necessary, but will cause problems. Anyone know if this will be true?

Subject: Open Transport error

I installed the Open Transport 1.1 and found a big problem.

The settings for the new Control Panel seem OK, and I can dial, but I
cannot access anything (DNS errors).

If I revert to MacTCP after deleting the Open Transport files, I find that
MacTCP becomes invisible and the type changes to ????, then it will not
function. If I delete, and move in a backup copy and reboot, it too
becomes invisible. The short term fix is to make it visible and reset the
type. I can then reboot and get to the internet.

Then when I reboot, it becomes invisible again.

I have read that there are problems with Open Transport, that certain
types of programs will not work with it. Is there currently a way to get
it to work properly?

Looks like I will have to experiment with the OT settings in the interim.
I am using a 6100 operating under 7.5.1. and FreePPP 1.0.5.

Subject: PopChar

Since no one else has mentioned this, I'll bring it up. I was having
problems with PopChar quite a while ago, and via e-mail the author told me
that one thing PopChar 2.7.1 is _not_ compatible with is GX fonts (Hoefler
Text, Skia, etc.). PopChar simply locks up on those. I don't know about
System 7.5/Power Macs/whatever, but I do know about GX fonts. PopChar would
work fine with everything I threw at it but that.

By that time, though, I had selected Hoefler Text as my company font, and I
had to get rid of PopChar. I miss it terribly. I've tried Key Caps,
Character Chooser, and also the TypeTamer demo (which comes very close to
PopChar's functionality, and adds several other features), but nothing
compares to PopChar for simplicity and ease of use.

Gunther promised a commercial version which would address this problem, but
I haven't heard back from him, and I don't know if that commercial version
ever came about. A Lycos search revealed no news of it. Any advice out
there?

Get "DropPS" (free, from Adobe) or the "Apple LaserWriter Utility"
(comes with all Apple printers) or an equivalent of any other printer
supplier and - from within the application select "Download PS file".

After a few seconds your printer should spit out the result.

Best wishes, Christian.

Subject: Power Computing Corporation Sucks

Hi,
I made the mistake of ordering a PowerWave CPU and a Sony monitor directly
>From the Power Computing Corporation in Austin, TX. The CPU arrived two
weeks after I placed the order, but the monitor somehow got left off the
shipping list (even tho they charged my credit card for the whole thing).
I have now waited for 18 days for the monitor to arrive, having talked to
a dozen people at PPC during this time, including the guy who took my order
initially, people from sales and customer service, and the secretary to the
president who assured me that she would see to it that the monitor be sent
at highest priority. That was five days ago.

Has anyone else had similar problems with these Texas folks? Does anyone
have any suggestions as to how I might get them to send me the monitor?

Thanks for listening.

Subject: Slow Word startup on PB

When I first got my Duo 280, I noticed that Word would open very slowly,
i.e., the splash screen appears after lanuching the application, then it
would just sit there for minutes before the document window opens. I
re-installed Word, but that didn't help, so I basically forgot about it
until my wife started to complain about it.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? ClarisWorks opens
very fast, and even Microsoft Excel opens as fast as on a desktop Mac.
WordPerfect 3.5 has the same problem of slow startup, too.

When the Duo is plugged in, it is nominally a 33 MHz 68040 machine, so
why is it so slow on opening Word Processors?

I'm running System 7.5.1 with just the usual extensions.

Hi-
In order to give people who don't have FTP access their own web

a certain file library. Since this is all that the BBS would be used

cheap and does this please send E-Mail to [email protected] with

Thank you very much to Antonio Fernandez Martinez, Rick Zaccone, James F.
Palmer, Marc Elmlund, Javier Llavador and the rest of the people who sent
their comments about spanish spell checkers.

As almost all the posts suggested, the best choice for spell checking is
Excalibur 2.2, a freeware program available at
ftp://sol.eg.bucknell.edu/pub/mac/.

Although it's intended for use with LaTex documents, Excalibur is able to
spell check standard text documents. Also, it can check the clipboard
(great for e-mail messages!). Excalibur supports a wide range of languages
and has the ability to use custom dictionaries. It's fat binary and has
full balloon help support.

Excalibur is an invaluable spell checking tool. Despite being freeware,
it's a lot better than most commercial programs.

Enjoy it!

Perhaps this has been solved before (I'm catching up on the Digests), but I
had one of these errors (several, actually, and mainly type 2 and 3 errors)
that bugged the heck out of me for days. I reinstalled things, zapped
things, trashed things, etc. etc. etc., all to no avail. What it turned out
to be was a defective Chooser and/or StyleWriter driver. I deleted them
completely, replaced them with new versions, and the problem went away.
Hope this helps.
